THE RAZER ACADEMY IS BORN - AN ALL NEW COMPETITIVE GAMING LEARNING PLATFORM
Razer launches its new e-Sports and pro-gaming educational platform, driven by some of the world’s most popular e-Sports personalities
Carlsbad, Calif. – March 15th, 2012 – Razer™, one of the world’s pioneering supporters of e-Sports, champions an all new e-Sports learning platform aimed at every gamer from casual and competitive amateurs to pro-gamers, driven by some of the world’s most experienced and celebrated gaming personalities.
The Razer Academy, an online platform still currently in its beta phase, is designed to provide an interactive, in-depth and enjoyable learning experience for e-Sports fans, will provide gaming shows, guides, game analysis, commentary, articles, interviews and documentaries, brought to you by some of the most famed individuals in e-Sports history.
The Academy contributors will include:
Abdulatif “Latif” Alhmili – Streetfighter champion Bachir “Athene” Boumaaza – world famous gamer and YouTuber Toby “TobiWanKenobi” Dawson – professional Defense of the Ancients commentator Ben “MrBitter” Nichol – professional StarCraft II commentator Martin “AngeL” Olsen – professional Defense of the Ancients player Protato Monster – League of Legends YouTube channel John “Swifty” Pyle – World of Warcraft legend Rachel “Seltzer” Quirico – e-Sports journalist and gamer Stuart “TosspoT” Saw – professional commentator Kendall “arCtiC" Smith – professional console gamer Leigh “Deman” Smith – professional commentator Kevin “RotterdaM” van der Kooi – professional StarCraft II commentator Alexei “Cypher” Yanushevsky – Quake professional
Supplementing this all-star lineup of e-Sports personalities will be the elite members of Team Razer – hundreds of professional gamers with huge competitive gaming experience, who will lend their knowledge and expertise to the Razer Academy project as guests on shows, commentaries and guides.
Ranging from match analysis and commentary in StarCraft II and League of Legends to live e-Sports gaming shows and guides to hone and develop your game, the Razer Academy will be situated on a brand new online portal where you can pick and choose those games and e-Sports stars you wish to follow.
“Unlike some other sports where professionals use tricked-out equipment made expressly for them, pro gamers use the very same hardware off-the-shelf that is readily available to you. Have you ever wondered what they use, why they use a certain type or style of mouse, keyboard, headset or surface? Razer Academy will strive to educate and demystify the why and how of gaming hardware. The Razer Academy aims to quench your thirst for e-Sports, providing a platform to not only improve and develop your game, but to make it your true passion,” said Robert “RazerGuy” Krakoff, co-creator of the first gaming mouse and President, Razer USA. “The star contributors to the Academy are legends in their own right and, drawing on their experience and talent, will provide some truly mouth-watering content to help you become a pro-gaming baller too.”
About Razer: Razer has been a pioneering supporter of e-Sports since its conception. It is in our blood and we are driven to further the culture of professional gaming in all that we do. A lot of these guys will be facilitators that have shoutcasting experience working with various members of Team Razer and inviting them on shows to bring this content. There will be additional Team Razer pros (likes of Mouz, Empire, Liquid, etc.) doing their own stuff on this, as well.

This is a confusing announcement. It sounds like a combination of match analysis as well as product hawking but passing it off as a legitimate tech show. Why would the "Razer Academy" bother looking at the new Steelseries mouse or Logitech headset? If anything they'd look at it and downplay it's strengths and emphasize their weaknesses.
The match analysis things do sound cool though, although I'm not sure why you have people like Latif or Cypher there since the focus is on Starcraft 2 and LoL.
As much as I prefer Mr Bitter and Rotterdam to many other SC2 casters... Can't really say this show seems very credible or serious. Bunch of console gamers and "youtube profiles" famous through WoW and other non-relevant games.

This sounds good though.
while i kind of get your point with the youtubers, i find it ignorant of u to look at console games and other games as "non-relevant" games. Starcraft 2 isnt the only game on the planet that people compete in, seems like you know nothing of other esports games, yet you say they are "non-relevant". (btw isnt it irrelevant? i think it is, but im not sure, im not english ^^)
hmm, im curious, not fully convinced yet, depends on what figures that comes out of the other teams. I like that you have Latif, he's pretty good, would be awesome if u could get one of the japanese fighting game gods on tho :D (Daigo, Mago, Tokido, sako? and i dunno.. iirc) or like jwong :D
Athene and Swifty? Really? Swifty wasn't even one of the best WoW players and Athene is a joke. Most of the other personalities I've never even heard of. Was very excited for this announcement but having people like this on board has completely killed my interest.
Sorry Rotter, you're awesome but I'm not sifting through the trash for you.
Those of you who have been playing for years can be assured that I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve that will interest even the most hardened duelers out there too.
In SC2 terms, what level of players are they looking for?
I think they're looking for very high-level players that could become pro-gamers if they had extra support and didn't need to worry about living/ practice conditions. Just giving them that extra little nudge in hopes that the "almost pro-gamers" could get picked up by an actual pro-team with the help of Razer.

So how do the contributors factor in?
Like if you're a a DotA player, you only practice with AngeL? And who are the teammates? Or if you're a mid-GM SC2 player?
Or is it just about giving them an environment where their living conditions are taken care of? That might be interesting.

Well that's what my confusion is. If they want to make great SC2 players even better (so that they get picked up by pro-teams), then they're going to need to be trained by pro-gamers. And this list of contributors has none. The list has a bunch of interesting personalities from various e-sports genres... but I don't see how any of them are going to make a high master or GM player even more polished into a pro SC2 player. Maybe it's less content-based and more work ethic/ other stuff based... or maybe there are actual SC2 pro-gamers being called in to help, and they just haven't been announced yet (hopefully this).
I'm looking forward to seeing more updates and elaboration though

To me it seems that the main point is that pro players get paid to post content which ideally other users want to view. Conveniently all the content is posted on the razer site, which generates a lot of exposure for them and thus makes the thing worthwile. It will also cause eyecancer if used over a long period of time
This looks more like entertainment than teaching to me, neither Athene nor Swifty were or are top WoW players and while Rotterdam and MrBitter certainly are very good casters, they're not top SC2 players either.
Not sure what you guys are confused about....obviously they are only giving broad guidelines right now but it's a "learning platform" intend to produce "gaming shows, guides, game analysis, commentary, articles, interviews and documentaries." It will be hosted by the named individuals but it will be them working with all of Team Razer, which is many different pro teams including Liquid. So it's entertainment content and guides/analysis for specific games. It's pretty open ended and seems to me to have a lot of potential, I'm interested to see it fully fleshed out though.

There is more to come. In various games. As it says it's a beta program. We'll be announcing more and more pros to take part in this over the weeks and months to come.
Trying cover all games (whether considered irrelevant by some or not). Shoutcasters and entertainer are one place to start and they will be working with professional players of Team Razer and some Team Razer players will have their own thing.
This is just a starting lineup. Also you can let us know what other games/personalities you'd like to see there under academy @ razerzone.com.

Eh, I'm just a bitter WoW elitist (kind of a paradox, actually) and that statement was pretty poorly concieved
Athene and Swifty were nothing compared to players like Reckful, Hydra, Hoodrych, Sodah, not to mention the Korean WoW players
The only WoW players I know of in SC2 are Nadagast and Masq

I would like to see actual player, not personalities. Because right now i dont know, those people are known, but are they actually good player who wish to be progamer in their own game? Or is this a kind of reality show, with know personilities in it?

Not much, he just hosted a tournament by himself and with few other progamers in WoW. They raised more than 20 000 dollars for charity. That's more than some of your precious StarCraft 2 tournament price pools.

Heh, what's a paradox about "WoW elitist" is that you've decided to put Reckful, Hydra, Hoodrych, and Sodah at the top of your "best" players list when they've only won a competition due to 3v3 composition and the wonderful RNG system that has plagued WoW. There honestly isn't such a thing as a "top-tier" WoW player due to the previously mentioned, but the list you gave is not better then Athene or Swifty.
From a business stand point, Athene and Swifty are, bar none, the best choice for something like this and certainly will be an excellent source of information in terms of PvP strategy, creative use of in-game mechanics, and overall knowledge of WoW.
On topic: I look forward to seeing where this goes! I give major props to Team Razer for launching this initiative and look forward to seeing an increase of the overall skill of the player base in various games (because I really, really don't like having to play with bad players).
edit:
I'd actually look forward to some Rotterdam WC3 commentary. I've been getting that itch lately to binge on some WC3.

Uh, which is far and away better than anything Athene or Swifty have ever done in competitive play? As far as I can tell they don't even get invited/qualify for high-end tournaments.
There are WoW players that are just a cut above the rest. Swifty and Athene are not a part of that category.

It shows exactly how little you know about the rules regarding prize money work with WoW events (or at least how they used to -- I'll give you a hint: there was a MAJOR incentive for non US players to not compete.). I'm sorry that you started playing during WoTLK and missed out on what Athene and Swifty did before the game became completely casual. In fact, because of Swifty, my favorite item, the Skull of Impending Doom, was nerfed because you could use the bleed to break CC and was changed from a linear damage debuff (suited for low level players) to scaling with your maximum amount of HP.
I'm not saying they are the best; however, if you really think WoW PvP is a display of skill and not an invest of time, matrix and a little bit of luck, then you're sad. Athene and Swifty have played far longer then the vast majority of players and the extent of their knowledge of all the various facets of the game show it. They are promoters of E-Sports, have proven able to captivate a large audience, and are well spoken (yes, Athene is well spoken ... or at least in the sense they can both articulate their thoughts in a manner that most would understand without having to ask further questions).
I'm always happy to see initiatives such as this one in esports. I am among those that are confused about what exactly TheRazerAcademy will be but, it seems that Razer has several directions they are considering with this "beta."
The greatest questions are what community produces the greatest ROI and will therefore be recipients of the most content? With that in mind, SC2 content like Mr. Bitter mentions in his announcement =awesome [training house for unsigned players to become pro]. Please pledge to continue this so I can justify the sudden increase in time I spend on B.net now! :D
Also, with announcements of announcements it seems polite to be self-aware. The vagueness of this post and the lack of firm timeframes for new info are very frustrating and I want to be excited, not perplexed.
Good luck and thankyou Razer for all you do for all esports!

I started playing at the start of TBC but keep flinging your shit I guess. And don't sit there and act like players like Rekrul weren't at the top until WotLK.
At the very highest level WoW PvP has almost nothing to do with time played because everyone who competes there puts in the minimum requisite to have the best gear, so you can just drop that argument. Swifty and Athene have never competed on the level of players like Rekrul, Hoodrych or Hydra -- on the ladder or in tournaments. And I dare you to find some evidence that they have. They got invited because they've got fan followings; not because they're particularly good at the game, and that feels cheap to me.
Actually, Athene has been apart of Razer for some time. If you watch videos on Razer's YouTube channel, he is often doing coverage of game events and what not.
Cypher is out of their league. btw why no Liquid players ? for all of you complaining about no good WoW players. The thing is its Razers Academy. They cant put there players sponsored by Steelseries. thats why no Rapha EDIT: Athene is not there for teaching ppl playing WoW but for science stuff
Sounds good and all, but there aren't any elite gamers there, mostly e - celebrities, you tubers and whatnot :x ? ? ? ?
For an academy to be good you need in depth pro analysis by someone who's walked the path.
Rottie was "walking the path" in WC3 and was heavily involved with DeMuslim in the beta and still takes games off any pro in PvP xD
But yeh Rottie is a big celeb in the WC3 world and is probably EUs top 1/2 caster. I still have no clue what this is supposed to do but thats my opinion xD
Only interesting thing here is TosspoT being on the list. I'll be interested to see what he does for them and if its a success. Sooner this guy gets back into shoutcasting the sooner people have just another casters whos on-par with 2gd, djwheat and others like these in terms of there history. He was one of the professional originals and I'm happy he's still about. Not many people who can pick up any game and cast it successfully.

So sad they picked LoL along SC2 I would have prefer QL or DotA2 but whatever...let's see where this goes because it just got very blurry for me i don't understand the point of this project anymore T_T
I would love to take this seriously, but so far it seems like just another way to get people to buy Razer gear.

How does this relate to an academy context? if i want to learn what pros use and why i could just Google it. are you guys trying to make this a real Academy where people can actually improve their skills? or just a place with cool videos featuring pro players using and praising their Razer gear?
Don't Really think you can take this as a serious learning platform for sc2 or BW ... The lineup consists mostly of Personalities that arent real Pro-Gamers
To be fair, if you are a Master player in sc2 you have exactly the same game knowledge (if not more) than most casters...
Jesus thats quite the collection of people. Tobi, Swifty, Athene, And many sc2 guys as well. They are pulling out all the stops for this. I really wonder if something cool will come to fruition. Its not easy to assemble all these guys together.

Will they actually be getting together tho? To me it just seems like the announcement of some kind of youtube channel where some of the 'personalities' interview/show games of some of the sponsored players.
Seems cool, and I'd love to watch but no RTS progamers :/ no BW or SC2... kinda sucks. I'll be looking forward to watching some stuff though to see what it's all about.

This was answered just a couple of posts below Endymion's original message.
When I saw Latif, I actually defied gravity and performed C. Viper's Ultra 1; Burst Time, and flew through the air in a series of amazing burning kicks.
Now i'm kind of dizzy.
But aside from that, he's one of my favorites in the SSFIV:AE atm, right up there with Tokido and Fuudo.

According to Mr. Bitter this is supposed to be a place to allow players to get "as good as they are willing to be." With the majority of the people involved not being from a StarCraft background, or being a commentator for StarCraft, it doesn't *sound* to be "that" helpful. Yes yes, I know there will be BW, SC2, and WC3 pros participating, but they won't be there all the time. It'll just have to be a wait and see sort of thing.
Also, no need to get hostile and bitchy about other people.
From a communications point of view this seems to be a bad start. It doesn't seem clear enough what they are going to do. Plus: Too many people involved imho (feels like Slipknot Oo)..
Even though: I wish you guys all the best! Love razer and hope you gonna suceed!
Not much up yet since it just started, other than a Dota2 vid. If everything else follows that (in being educational) this could be a very interesting thing.

And as mentioned before we'll be adding a couple of StarCraft II pros very soon.
Each of the shows/shoutcaster will have their separate thing, so if you're interested in a certain game/personality, you can just ignore that.
As for the casters, they will be back up by professionals of Team Razer that will be featured on their shows, as well.

They have Athene in their lineup. I can't imagine they are taking it very seriously either.
This is sorta a dumb question, but wouldn't it b better to have players rather that commentators for stuff like this? Don't get me wrong, bitter and rotter and seltzer are awesome and i luv their content, but they don't seem to fit the role for me. Even analytical commentators prolly won't fit in imo

What's wrong with Seltzer casting? It should be interesting ^^ and she's so pretty
I honestly can't really tell what it is. Are they teaching you about hardware? How to play? Seems like the details are a little vague. Always happy to see sponsors offering more though. Thanks Razer.

To be fair, if you are a Master player in sc2 you have exactly the same game knowledge (if not more) than most casters...

From that I can infer that sure you're nowhere near masters
I'm so excited about this, Thanks to Razer and MrBitter and everyone involved! Also, Tobi being apart of this is 10/10, one of the most exciting casters, will be a pleasure to watch this.

Yeah, not to mention he never even did anything on the tournament level. Most of the wow players that went to MLG or blizzcon were infinitely better than swifty. and then you have the actual WoW legends like noxn or innate or looped, or orangemarmalade who basically soloed teams.
