OK, so I just pulled a search on the teamliquid website (and google for that matter) and couldn't find any results on Chinese vocabulary items for Starcraft 2. I Really WanT to learn starcraft 2 related vocabulary because if my friends ask about it Here, then I like to fill them in on What I like to do.
Right now I am in Taiwan, I know, they use different vocabulary and different accents from mainlanders. I can read over ONE thousand common characters in simplified script and my traditional script reading skills are developing quickly. If you think I have made mistakes in translations, then please, by all means correct it. I would also prefer to know the more colloquial, more popular, words that you call these items.
FORENOTE: google TRANSLATE iS NOT A RELIABLE TRANSLATION SOURCE.
There's quite a few terms I need to know, I had no clue I would be working on this for this long...

the vocab is the same, it's just that one is simplified and one is traditional chinese. you can get most of the official translated names over the tw battlenet here: http://tw.battle.net/sc2/zh/game/unit/
for workers, they tend to use 農民 instead, and it means farmers/peasants.

Are Zerglings really called "Puppies" and Ultralisks "Big Elephants"?

Yes they are, go watch a couple of mandarin streams and you'll find out for yourself.

I am Chinese, so I am going to translate the first couple for you, for the units you can get them from the website. And people in mainland China call them differently from people from Taiwan for some units. :D
1) Non-Starcraft items that are related to SC2: "Stream" or "streaming" - 直播 "Xsplit" "Owned" "Replay" - 錄像 "Live for the Swarm!" - 為蟲族而生 "Ragequit" - don't think there is a term for that
2)Starcraft Items I need to know: Ladder - 天梯 Campaign - 戰役 Custom game - 自定遊戲 "Tower Defense" game - 塔防遊戲 "Observer Mode" - not sure if there is one for that "Detectors" - 反隱單位 Hallucinations - 幻象 (maybe) "engagement" - 交戰 "build (a structure)" - 造 Lift off (a Terran structure) - 飛起 Units: - 單位 Structures: - 建築 Mineral Fields - 晶礦 Vespene geysers - 氣礦 TurN (a structure in to something.( Ex: "Turning a Command Center Into an Orbital Command.)). - 升級 (it means upgrade, but it is an upgrade) Make (a building or a unit) - 造 Morph (a building or a unit) - 造 Unit compositions: - 兵種搭配 Macro: - 運營 Micro: - 微操

yes.
in China Marauders are called 光头 (bald head). Which is the best imo

Templars are called lightning 闪电 because you know you use them to storm and nothing else.
Zealots are called XX because the XX sound they make when they attack in BW

I think most Chinese commentators like to call anything that adds population limit "房子" (houses). This include supply depots, overlords, etc.

For the unit names, as officially defined by Blizzard:
http://www.battlenet.com.cn/sc2/zh/game/unit/
I think it also defines all the other stuff too, maybe except for upgrade/tech buildings but most of the time gamers just refer to them by their hotkey anyway, so VC is Twilight Council and VA is Armory.
Also my personal favourite name for Marauders is 城管 :D
|
I dont speak chinese and only speak Japanese and when I look at the characters youve suggested for drone I think theyre wrong. 農民 is farmer and some other word is proboably better!

Alright, so I stepped out for a while and I want to say thanks guys. I'm a foreigner, not a "banana" who is learning these terms.

I didn't know people use the term banana seriously I've only ever heard ABC used.

btw barracks is BB factory is VF Starport is VS
just continuing the trend
4 BG 实在是太强了
Or。。。
TvP啊。。。我还不如给他来个真善美。 TvP....Time for me to 1/1/1
The 真善美 is a real punchline character, it came from the cult religion in China which the government kind of stomped on. and they had a punchline in their propaganda which was 真善美 and we SC2 players refer to 1/1/1 as 真善美 because it's evil like the cult.

In every language it can change the complete meaning of a unit and some words cant be translated into another language.
If you watch TLO stream (german) sometimes its very funny to see the names of each unit. For example the Drones: 工蜂 is very funny. I cant read fully chinese but the first means "work" and the second I cant read it but the first part it means for insects... so their perception a drone is just a working kind of insect...
also another point is.. some words it just cant be translated into another language... It just sounds awkard. There are some examples like flashlight - lighter - torch... I saw a debate once between yankee and an ozzy about that...
This isnt a sc2 problem but a common interlanguistic (is this the right word?, english isnt my native lang) problem
Oh "cheese" cant be translated... because we have cheese, the yellow food. cheese, sc2 and cheese(head), calling dutch people like Ive just called americans a yankee . Also the otherway around... BaiGui... means foreigner/whiteghost... or HeiGui...(very rascist)

It is more of a social reference than just the game reference, making it all the more funnier for those of us forced to suffer China's oppressive regime.
@ILOVEWAR
蜂 means bee or hornet or similar, more or less a flying insect. Cheese/All-in is sometimes referred to by commentators as “放大招”,literally "use ultimate (skill/ability)".

工蜂 means drone in chinese. nothing weird about it.

Studying in China at the moment. Although I only know a few SC2 words in Mandarin, I noticed a few common colloquial ones were missing (funny ones too):
Mutalist - 飞龙 (flying dragons) Archon - 白球 (white orb) Banelings - 爆虫 (exploding bugs)
Also, as some people already noted, most buildings can be referred to by their hotkeys (BG = gateway, etc.), but there are some other ways to refer to them too:
Supply depots (and pylons and overlords) - 房子 (houses) Starport (sometimes stargates) - 飞机场 (airport) Spire - 飞龙塔 (mutalisk tower) Bunker (and spines) - 地堡 (i guess it basically means bunker) Turrets (and spores) - 防控 (anti-air)
Some famous players:
Boxer - 包哥 (I think... anyhow, it's a phonetic translation. But it also sounds like you're referring to an older brother with the last name of 包) MKP - 山包 (shortened from "山寨BoxeR" = "fake/knockoff BoxeR") FruitDealer - 水果贩子 (umm... a guy who sells fruit. who da thunk it.)
Well, that's all I can think of right now. I hope this (my first post) was helpful. If I think of any more, I'll post them. Also, some people post replays with Mandarin commentary on youku.com, so that's pretty helpful if your 听力 is good enough.
P.S. Marauders as 城管? That's absolutely hilarious. I can see the meme now: 城管太OP了!
