This is crazy to me, being a twin myself I can't even imagine if this had happened to me. Apparently the twins Abigail and Brittany Hensel both control half of their body. Think about the coordination that takes. I know my brother and I my understand each other more than most people (because we've always been together) but still. They Hensel twins also differ in the fact that they are known to have two of certain organs such as the heart.

Yeah because this is totally the first and most important issue when growing up.

On a serious note though, I hope that it doesn't subject them to a life of bullying and abuse. I also hope that they will have a way of moving easily seeing as they control half of the body each :S
I have two younger brothers that are twins, there's always a special bond between multiples but those conjoined take it to a whole other level. I'll have to keep an eye out for the eventual documentary.
I think the difference here is that they share organs. As far as I know, most conjoined twins have two sets of organs, they're just attached at some point. These boys share everything but their head and brains...making them more like a two-headed person.
Very cool, I hope they survive. I'm not sure anything like this is precedented.

Finding a partner should be possible, I'm sure of that, the problem would be if one of them was gay and the other wasn't.

Jesus isn't pronounces the same in Brazil or in any Latin country, and it's pretty common... I don't know why that is the first thing that popped out at you.
I feel pretty sorry for this kid/s, and also shouldn't you at least add a spoiler tag to the picture, I was horrified when I saw it, and maybe some people will have nightmares about it.
I imagine they share control and sensory perception of the nervous system. Will be interesting to see how much conflict there is between the two minds sharing one body.
This might seem a little gauche but this WC2 quote just seemed too appropriate to pass up:

2 heads means 2 brains which means 2 different people.
Since when did this community go so far downhill? Every one of you poking fun at these two babies deserves to have one of your own children be born in a similar fashion. Grow the fuck up, this is sad and I hope they're going to live a healthy life.

Goddamn. There's just too much to this.
I feel terrible about stuff like this. Nothing in life is worse than being born with a struggle, a defect, an impediment; something you didn't do, and you can't control happening to you. My condolences.
This is some very sad shit, however I am very curious as to the body controlling aspect of it. Also im wondering what the chances of something like this happening again are.

the other questions...well...dunno.
Harder questions: What if one is a good catholic boy and the other likes to fap? If both can control their body parts, what happens if they both ask nice but one is secretly evil and does bad things and pretends it wasn't him? What happens if one of them pounds shots while the other takes hits? Will the blood circulation make them drunk and high? If one of them has self confidence problems and can't get a hard on in bed, is it okay to let the other head see because he has a fine conscious and can get hard easily from a nude woman?
im wondering about in the work force how they will be earning their income. would be kinda kool to take hourly breaks at a desk job so one can go on facebook/ read ect while the other works. or both working at the same desk and getting double income.

You must not know how twins are formed. The genes have nothing to do with it. They didn't grow an extra head, the egg tried to split but only got a small part of the way.

To what extent did the duplication occur? Is it limited to double central nervous system, or is there also a duplication of peripheral and autonomic nerves?
Given that there is one heart, and presumably a normal number of other organs such as liver, kidneys, etc, to what extent does each brain contribute to control over the autonomic nervous system? For example, which brain detects and regulates homoestatic functions such as temperature and hunger control? Assuming there are two functional hypothalamuses but only one body, what happens if they receive conflicting sensory inputs, thereby off-setting vital functions such as circulation or blood pressure?

Actually genes could have something to do with it in theory (maybe it's not the case in this particular story though). For example, take a look at craniofacial development. Dysfunction of sox6,9,10, Shh, Wnts, FGF, TGFb and other genetic programs results in craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate, craniosyntosis...
It seems reasonable that perhaps a very particular set misregulations of gene expression at various crucial developmental points (such as neuralation) could result in a developmental malformation with a phenotype similar to this, in theory.

The article says there are two brains, and two spinal cords. Given that, we can assume there are two central nervous systems. If that's true, then there are probably two primary motor cortices -- one in each brain cortex. When you want to move, you elicit activity at your primary motor region (and other regions). A neuronal ensemble corresponding to a desired movement fires and conveys a complex signal down your spinal cord. These motor neurons synapse to peripheral motor neurons that are located in your spinal cord.
So up to this point BOTH heads can enable and command movement. But what we don't know is which CNS neurons synapse to which PNS neurons. Knowing this would allow us to know which limbs receive inputs from which brain! It's interesting actually, because what if both primary motor cortices feed inputs to the same peripheral nerves, thereby endowing the limb in question with responsiveness to both brains? Does one brain "dominate" the other due to stronger synapsing? Does post-developmental plasticity occur, perhaps shaving off the connections from one brain? Do both brains remain equally able to command all parts of the body? Seems like there's a lot of cool stuff to find out about this girls

I've got identical twin cousins and identical twin nieces. They're still not the same, physically or mentally. You can tell them apart fairly easily.
For example, one of my nieces has a birthmark where the other doesn't. Her ears stick out a bit less. She's a lot more introverted as opposed to the other one. Her likes & dislikes are different. She's already lighter because she doesn't like sugary stuff or meat as much as the other too. The list goes on.
When these babies are put into a stressful condition that elicits fear or anything of the like, and BOTH brains send nerve impulses to the adrenal gland, would their body overload in epinephrine and spike up their heartrate so much that they could die?
I mean, they are making their body go through twice the amount of adrenaline than one of us. Shouldn't that be a very concerning part of discussions on whether they would survive or not?

A properly functioning endocrine system should have negative feedback loops to stop the excess of any hormone so I don't think that this would be a problem but obviously this is a very special case so you can't be sure.
Tho it was stated before and its kinda cruel the picture does make an old wow and wc player like myself think of "ogre" when i first see it. Other then that gl to them to making it to maturity, would be kinda annoying to live like that but if you get used to it as a kid it might to seems so for all i know.
Edit: thinking about it, if they have 1 set of organs, will the lungs/heart be "strong" enough to support both brains ?
What state was it that ruled siamese twins cannot be put in jail due to one of the twins actions? Italy? I find that fascinating. Hopefuly they can reach maturity.

Is it confirmed by DNA that they are both female? Yes, I know that there is only one set of genitals, but before a person was a conjoined twin. The second twin died early on (very early on) and was not present at birth, but a second set of DNA was in the system.
Now for the semi-trolling question. Wouldn't it be interesting if one could control the whole body, but the other was only able to bite the controller's ear?

Yeah because this is totally the first and most important issue when growing up.
There is an occurance of this already in Minnesota. I am friends with a girl who knows the twins who have the same defect, and are like 20 something now.. I forget their names, there was a documentary on them, asking questions that would answer a lot of what people are wondering about his baby.

this kind of thing can happen to a single person too. if the mother has twins very early in the pregnancy and the two sets of cells fuse, they can create a person with two sets of DNA (one organ will have one type of DNA and another organ might have different DNA). more often than not, conjoined twins like this is the consequence (if not miscarriage).

They need to be same gender, cause they are from the same egg. non identical twins are from 2 different eggs.
Twins can either be monozygotic ("identical"), meaning that they develop from one zygote that splits and forms two embryos, or dizygotic ("fraternal") because they develop from two separate eggs that are fertilized by two separate sperm.
Am I the only one thinking about how high they could get their APM with the right coordination? Two brains > one brain. I wonder if both heads have the ability to breathe and eat?
On a serious note, I have a severe concern that one set of vital organs will not be able to support two fully functional heads (brains). Our brain uses a ton of resources, and one heart trying to pump enough blood up there seems like it will be overworked :/

I find the question about breathing very intriguing. Their single set of lungs will acquire twice as much oxygen, assuming they both breathe at the same rate as a single individual, correct? They could be an excellent cyclist if they are able to coordinate their legs and balance appropriately.
Also, how the hell did the mothers give birth to children with two heads, before the days of the c-section? Babies are born with "soft spots" so the mothers can accommodate the birthing process. I can't imagine pushing out two heads at once being a very pleasant process. Yikes.
EDIT: I've thought more about the breathing aspect. I'm guessing their lungs will have the same capacity as a normal set, and thus they will both breathe half as much as a single individual. They will probably have to coordinate the inhale-exhale process, though.
I wonder when they age, if there Testosterone production is doubled after strenuous exercise. I doubt the have a genetic problem with that hormone promoter.

I am torn on this, the perspective of understanding the ins and outs of their body is extremely exciting, but on the other hand I feel very sorry for them. Also, atheism is spreading very fast in Brazil, at least most of the people I know from college ( Computer Science) and childhood friends are atheists/agnostics, possibly because I've always thought little of believers since I was very young and kept myself far from them, don't really care, but still, I fail to see how religious people would feel like treating them badly, if anything they would be kinder to them? Our main religion is catholicism, not the spartan's politheism.

Breathing is more about pumping air with lungs than opening your mouth.
So if one breathes, he's commanding the lungs to expand and take in air. If the other does the same thing, he's just commanding the lungs to do what they are already doing.
Now here's the funky part: To be able to speak or sing, your lungs have to compress to push out the air and create sound. What happens if one of them breathes in while the other tries to speak?
What I'm concerned about is the supplying of air. The lungs are designed to feed 1 body and 1 head, not 1 body and 2 heads. Same goes with the heart and perhaps other organs. If your brain is low on oxygen it cannot function properly.
So now my question is, will their lungs adapt and evolve to retrieve more oxygen from air or will they have trouble concentrating for their whole life?
Sharing 1 heart, at least one of them will die in development, almost guaranteed- Abigail and Brittany Hensen were able to develop normally because they have separate organs, for the most part.
As far as breathing, the Hensens have normal involuntary control of a single diaphragm controlling 2 sets of lungs, so these new babies will probably have no problem breathing together with just 1 set of lungs. Concerning oxygen supply, normal breaths for people take up 5% of your lung capacity (see tidal volume), so that wouldn't be an issue. As long as blood supply is fine to the heads, oxygen supply would be too.
Off topic, I also am a horrible person for laughing at the funny pics thread joke. Sigh.
i think they would be similar to the hensels if they survive. I find it doubtful that they would have duplicate nervous systems radiating from each spine. Its probably more likely that they each control their half of the body.

This makes me sad . I know people can try to make them enjoy life, but...the reality is its probably going to be very harsh and difficult.
This is one case where I think abortions should be considered, if the future life of the baby is going to be torturous...just abort early and have another baby. It think it should be pretty apparent that something has gone wrong while the fetus is still developing, or perhaps before. I mean its right to have sympathy for people born this way, and do the best to ensure they live a good life, but if it can be avoided why not? One child's life is always the loss of a chance at life for another potential child, in terms of the "unborn" it all seems equivalent to me.

I actually thought about this for a long time and I have no idea what would happen as one would have the guilty mind and guilty act but the other would only have the guilty act, so they couldn't really punish him if he was considered a different person. I think it would be really interesting on how a country would handle this.

That is a very good question, If one has control over one arm, and commits murder with that arm, then you could charge that person with a crime, but you could not punish the person by sending them to jail. I suppose how they would get around the punishment is by considering the other twin an acomplice or something. This type of law is a mystery. Let's just hope neither of them are murderers.

The brain uses up a LOT of blood and energy. Thinking ain't easy. My personal guess is that the heart will be forced to grow to sustain the two heads, and they'll probably end up dying due to heart failure sometime between 30 and 60 (I really don't have any evidence to support any claims, they could very well end up living to 90). They'll definitely have to eat more than the average person of their weight, and probably consume more iron as well, but I don't think it'll kill them before birth. The real issue in my eyes is the dual spines. I'm not sure that they'll work together extremely well, and that could cause some severe back pains.
Aside from the medical aspects, a serious concern with them is how they'll learn to deal with being two people sharing one body. It's not common, so they won't be able to seek empathetic support on the issue. Instead, they'll have to figure it all out themselves. The issue of muscle control is rather serious as well. If only one of them has control, the other will likely end up rather miserable. If they share control, or split the body half and half, there could be very serious issues with coordination. Does anyone happen to know how the other pair of twins with this condition ended up sharing their body? I'm rather eager to know.
Well, at the very least, they should be able to make a decent amount of money on books and documentaries about their lives. Always look on the bright side, right?

Simple they would alternate one week in jail and then the next free. Seriously though it would get weird like what if one of them got a passport. Legally they would be two entities but only one entity IRL.
I am not sure if anyone knows this but one of the Hensel twins has gotten married, so if they do end up alright, they can still be successful. I just hope they can get past their early age, with their health complications.
I was just reading about some other twins in india, which many people believe to be the reincarnation of the multi limbed god or something. I'll try find it.

I would be more inclined to believe this if they actually had two bodies. But since the only duplicate "limbs" are their heads, and the only duplicate "organs" are their brains, there might just be enough blood and oxygen to go around it seems to me. On a related note the article says something about one of them having respiratory problems. I wonder if this is because of the awkward way they would have to breathe, similar to the awkward way other conjoined twins have to walk. Surely if each brain is functional, it would have an instinct to breath through its own mouth, but that means you have two heads filling and decompressing the same lungs. But are both babies actually connected to the same lungs and stomach through duel pathways? It all seems very strange.

I've honestly wondered how that would work. Since they only have one female genitalia, would they both experience simultaneous orgasms? Hard to have intimate private times...
I don't quite see how this is humane to let them live. They are never going to have a life outside of hospitals most likely, will never have a meaningful relationship with another person aside from family and they will never have any privacy from the other twin.
It just feels wrong to me to make them live this life.

What makes you say this? How do you know that their body won't be able to support them? Did you even look into the hensel twins? They are perfectly happy human beings.
yeah this is weird.. hmm, i couldnt actually live with myself if i was one of them, but thats probably because i have weak mentality =.= i wish these 2 the best ^_^
It all depends if they get along or not. I wonder how they control their body, do they both control the entire body and it's a just a question of which of them has the first though of doing something and then reacts or do they have control over one half each of the body lol.
It's inspiring to me that the Hensel twins are able to lead such a normal life. Really gives me hope for the good side of humanity. From what i can tell, the only real difference here is that the Hensel twins have an extra heart/lungs set, so I don't think it's too crazy to hope that they'll be able to survive. Modern medicine can do some pretty amazing stuff.

Surprised I don't see enough people protesting this, instead they are just asking stupid questions.
This is a fucking disgrace. These people do not have the right to force these two lives to live in hell like this because of selfish wants. There should have been an abortion. I will feel so bad if they live past 2 years. No one should have to go through that.
It's a tragedy, I know, but at this point the children's lives demand more rights than the parents. Shit happens.
I really hope they live a long and happy life together, but as an older brother, it immediately called to mind "stop hitting yourself". Especially if they both had some control over their entire body. Immature, I know, but still, imagine how annoying it would be to have your own fist punch your face out of nowhere.

So you're saying that they should die? I think it's better if they have a choice in the matter. There's quite a few siamese twins that live out life. Not normally obviously, but they aren't in the depths of despair because of their condition or anything.

Are you really using the irresponsibility of the mother as justification for this? Rhetoric question by the way.
Also to add to your ignorance, I said, should have been an abortion. I wasn't questioning why there wasn't one.
I would be extremely interested to see the circulatory system for the baby. Having only one heart leads to the assumption that they have extra bood vessels including the carotid artery. I would like to know If they have 2 aortas or just extra branches from 1 aorta. This is a very interesting case! Unfortunately, as strong as the heart is, it's not meant to pump enough blood to supply a whole second brain. It would put a lot of strain on the heart I think. This is why a lot of babies with congenital defects like these often experience heart complications. Poor little thing I wish it all the best.

I guess if you want to play around with semantics you claim that you weren't question why there wasn't one. I'm not using the "ignorance of the mother to justify this" because it doesn't need to be justified. For the record I am pro choice not pro life but I don't see a reason for these two to have been aborted if their mother wanted to keep them. You have this awful mindset that their life is going to only be pain when you really can't predict such a thing now. No one is saying they are going to have an easy of wonderful life but you don't have to assume that they will have an awful one either.

Did they not know this or did they just choose not to abort or fix it (if possible) while they're still an embryo or did they not choose to ultrasound at all so they didn't know this was coming? (if the latter, wow that must be a nightmare xD)
I hope they can live as normal a life as possible =/

Interesting though the one with the slightly more tilted head must be jealous xD haha seems like they like each other (or is that just the vid trying to make us think that)
At least they don't hate each other. And that's strange, they both have their own set of organs o.o good thing their body has enough space.

I agree that it is kinda fucked up, but people make the best of their lives
The mother makes a good point in this video, from the moment that abortion is not an option, imagine what their lives would have been if they had been separated, living with half a body and stuff, plus it wasnt even sure they would survive. They seem to live a kinda normal life (or as much as it is possible given their condition).
Dunno, at me it looks better than living you life in a wheelchair with half a body, not being able to do anything.

Agree, think of how dangerous separating them would be, no matter how much you want it. You are literally cutting someone in half, and hoping the bleeding stops! How would it? And they only have their own set of organs waste up... one of them wouldn't have genitalia and like they said, they only have 1 bladder. Perhaps they were a bit misleading about them not wanting to separate -- it seems like it was impossible to separate.
Anyway it seems like they're not having that bad of a time lol. They work together really well. I guess when you're born that way, and especially because you experience all the same things, you are alike in many ways and it is much more different a life than what most of us may imagine: 2 random people sharing 1 body.

Ah ok good. Cus here in the USA if someone were named Jesus, or even Emanuel, he or she would attract even more attention especially if it's a pair of twins with 1 body xD
Btw what happens to the other half of the 100,000 pregnancies? Do the embryos/fetuses just die in the womb?
I wonder if this whole thing could've been avoided with proper check-ups, I mean usually you can spot if there is something wrong with the fetus kinda early. Then again Brazil being quite catholic country, guess abortion wouldn't have been an option in any case..
It really is a shame though.they wont live a normal life, it will probably be short, painful, filled with medical procedures and they'll be unable to do things many normal people can do.

Abortion isnt the only option. Early operations could seperate the two very early. i cant see why catholics would object to that. Then again, religion can make people into idiots.
Speculation: The mother was probably in a small village somewhere without access to proper medical services. The NHS really does do a good job.

they have only one set of organs so seperating them post birth is impossible, let alone before birth.
