Standard = Metric.
Don't be too American when the rest of the logical and scientific world has already standardized measurement.

I really hope you're over exaggerating, or you're from a very warm part of the world and never seen 0 degree centigrade weather

Either you're joking or you accidentally set your country to Canada when you really live in Romania

The temperature in Romania can easily vary from +40 to -20 during the year....i dont get something here...

I'm pretty sure that SI/Metric measurements are considered "Standard" and not US/Imperial measurements. But seeing as this thread was made by an american the ignorance is understandable.

Pretty sure you didn't read the thread or maybe you think saying the same thing 10 times over in this thread is contributing.
Although you did defeat your own pretty sure, if awknolwge that the OP is from the US where metric isn't standard, so to the OP metric isn't standard so you saying that it is would be ignoring the OP's perspective, which i guess makes you pretentious. Perhaps next you'll say that the various forms of chinese is the standard lanauge as more people speak it, when you say standard it depends, standard isn't a bad term to use to discribe US units which are basically US units(US customary units), they are not exactly the same as imperial units so they aren't imperial as if you read the thread you would know that imperial was standardized after the US broke off from the empire.

I guess feeling self important doesn't even warrant looking at the last page of the thread.

Metric makes so much more sense, sub-system of milli-, centi-, deci-, etc. are universal regardless if its in meters, liters, grams. etc. Never really understood why Imperial System likes conversions based on multiples of 2/4.

I am an architect assistant from London,
As such, I am used to being able to imagine imperial (yes, imperial, not standard) and here we tend to use miles (mph etc) rather than kilometers (other than when dealing with physics, or distance in general in an acedemic light).

However, in the building/architectural/engineering/manufacturing trade, and therefor in all physical entities, "mm" is quoted and always used.
As some one who can imagine and use both, i feel that metric is the easier, more reliable and above all more logical method.

Assuming he is not a dog, then he wouldn't die at 103. He would be sick though.

Imperial system makes absolutely no sense if you use decimal system for numbers and since even UK and US does use decimal numerical system, their system of measurements is inferior in practical use. If they started to use numerical system with base 6/12 then ok, it would make sense.

Non-metric systems come from ancient times when decimal system was far from common and 0 was not known/used.

I've been using metric all my life in Australia, I buy drinks in the millilitres, we measure distances in metres and kilometres. I find it amusing that you do not call the 'International System of Units' standard. I'm currently studying physics and I was under the assumption that SI units are used as convention by all physicists, but I'm kind of curious if that still holds for the American physicists.

I fear the outcomes of Imperial units becoming standard:

The advantages with the "standard" system are only there because you've gotten used to them you'd be arguing the exact opposite way if you were raised with the metric system. It is way easier to do calcuations in metric which is a clear advantage.

Whatever is easier/more familiar for a given product or purpose at the time.

100 yards.
16 oz.
2 liters
20lbs.
1 kilo
5 feet 9 inches
1 gallon
1 teaspoon
32 degrees F
20 decibels

Bla bla bla... And yes, I live in the USA. I don't really get the argument over switching everything to metric. As long as you're familiar with the system and an inch is always an inch, who cares? It's like currency... if you need to, just do the conversion afterward. As for the issue of calculation, I really don't get what's so much easier about metric. Are calculations like 12x2 that difficult? Is metric more sensible and consistent? Probably. Is it any easier? Same shit to me...

I'm American so I use the standard/imperial system, and I'm inclined to believe most of my people do the same.

It should be "Do you use standard or imperial" heh.

Of course I use metric, there are no advantages to imperial besides familiarity to Americans.

This thread, it always annoys me with the 'imperial is standard' title.

It was harder to teach you to get to the point where it became second nature. With that time, you could have been learning/memorizing other things.
It's just inefficient to have an unnecessarily convoluted system for these things.

Does being old make it untrue? If most of the world uses it, it's standard.

It is true though. More people use metric, it is the standard.

If you're going to refer to imperial as "standard" then specify "U.S. standard".

Or maybe, you know, request the thread title to be changed so people stop bringing this up?

I don't get this argument either. You learn all this stuff as a child so it takes no time at all for it to become second nature. Do you really think the fact that 12 inches = 1 foot is what's holding the American education system back? Really... unless you start getting into really obscure measurements (ie. furlongs and jiggers), nobody has trouble with this stuff at all.

Pros of Imperial system
- Tends to be divisible by 3 and 4 more often
- Fahrenheit has smaller units so less messing with decimals

Pros of Metric system
- It makes sense.
