Okay, now I think I just have to get that whisky somehow. I've long wanted to try Japanese whiskys and that description sounds delicious. I just wonder how ordering stuff online works with Finnish laws.
Another thing I should try soon is some good single malt matured in a sherry cask.

No particular favourites, mood, availability and my pocket rule the choice, but Irish for a blended brew and Scottish for a single malt is my general rule. Drink it neat as a splendidly mellowing winter warmer.

I always have a bottle of glenfiddich 12yrs for guests and a bottle of dalwhinnie 15yrs for myself :D

I prefer a swig of Jack to start the night off right. Jack and Ginger, Jack and coke or just Jack! Gentleman's Jack is quite tasty too and for my old band's 2nd birthday, 4 of us put down a liter in 2 hours of practice. Needless to say our motto of "Drink until we sound good" held true

It looks like you prefer the double distilled, smoked Scotch whisky. Try Connemara Cask strength, out of the Cooley Distillery. It's triple distilled, so it's much smoother than the scotch variety, though it still has the peated flavor you find in your Scotch whisky's. The Cask strength Connemara has won quite a few awards, as well.

To be honest, just about everything out of the Cooley distillery is tearing up the judging contests world-wide.
Whiskey legend Jim Murray, who wrote The Whiskey Bible, has said that Tyrconnell Madeira finish is one of his all time favorites... Though, of course, Connemara cask strength was praised quite highly as well.
If you don't have it, you should definitely pick up his book.

The bees knees of sherry finishes!

I almost only drink scotch. I usually drink Glenfiddich 18y as it's in my opinion the best value for 80$.
I am currently interested in trying Japanese whiskies, if anyone has any recommendation, welcome !

Thanks, gotta keep that in mind. I was also thinking of buying Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength.
Oh and apparently the Hakushu 12 y.o. is available in the liquour stores here so I gotta buy some when I get money.

Caol Ila 12 Yamazaki 18 Hibiki 12 (Kinda pricy, but a surprisingly good blend) Laphroaig 18 Laphroaig Quarter Cask Lagavulin 16 Macallan Cask Strength

i'm surprised more people haven't mentioned japanese whiskies! as mentioned before, the suntory yamazaki is amazing. the 12 year is quite affordable, but the 18 year is divine. but i really love nikka whisky even more. the nikka miyagikyo single malt is faaaaaaantastic. it's so soft and smooth... i've only had the 12 year, but there's a 15 that i'm going to (eventually) get my hands on. i tried another local whisky, the akashi white oak 5 year which was pretty decent.
the suntory yamazaki distillery is actually pretty close to where i live, and i did a tour of the facilities a while back. if anyone ever comes to the kyoto area, put this distillery on your list of things to do. it's free, and you get free whisky at the end of the tour!
|
by the way, question about bourbons. how is the wild turkey rare breed? worth the price, or should i just stick to the 101 proof stuff? anyone ever drink rye, like old overholt? can you recommend any other ryes?

There's a few problems with Japanese whiskies from a westerner's point of view. They're really expensive and it's hard to get a lot of information on them due to the language barrier. In addition they don't have yet such a well established reputation here. They do very well in whisky tastings and experts know they're good, but an average buyer is probably much more familiar with Scottish, Irish or American whiskeys.

For me I mainly drink Rye Whiskey. Crown is my main man, and especially the new Crown Royal Black.
When I first tried the new Black, I was blown away. The flavour hit me, and at first I got black licorice, then I tried again, and I just got even more flavours. I've been really digging it, and it's easily my favourite to drink, especially with Nestea or Arnold Palmers'.
I do a party every May Long called "Texas Mickey May Long" where I spend $100 on a Texas Mickey (100 Litres (Mickey is a Canadian term for a 375 mL bottle of any hard liquor)) Invite a bunch of friends over, and charge them 10 dollars and they can drink from the bottle for the rest of the night.
I haven't drink much Scotch, never really appealed to me, but I tried Johnnie Walker Black at a friend's house, and I really digged it.

i love all whisky, and whenever i get drunk its off good old jack daniels, crown royal or canadian club "cc". I got alot of scotch whiskys in my house, including an unopened johnny walker blue label as well as an almost empty gold label lol.

Also a nice scoth whisky that I had recently is Highland Park single malt, it was very nice. Also someone mentioned 40 creek whisky, one of my all time favourites, but i think its only sold in Canada so bummer for the rest of you.lol

for all those looking for recommendations on japanese whisky i can highly recommend the following:
- suntory yamazaki 10, 12 and 18y old (the 18y old is by far the best in my opinion but also a bit more expensive, notes: raisins, dark chocolate, smoke (not peat!) ) - suntory hakushu 12y and 18y old (i personally prefer the 12 year olds "fresher" more unique taste, notes: "forest"/grass very unique) - suntory yamazaki puncheon (has a very unique orange flavor) - hanyu noh 21y old (quite expensive and might not be everyones taste (very strong sherry taste) but i love it! sadly the distillery has been closed so it might not be as easy the get one of these) - suntory hibiki 17y old (really nice well balanced blend, but a bit costly. comes in a really beautiful bottle
i've also had some nikka whiskys (12y old was among them, i think) but none of the ones i had really had that special something that makes them unique (maybe i've had the wrong ones)

edit: wow reading this thread, I'm surprised to see Japanese whiskeys being so popular outside of Japan!
Nice to see Hakushu being mentioned so many times, it's definitely very interesting, and I actually plan to buy a bottle very soon.
I'm actually going to a whiskey bar on Friday, and they supposedly stock very rare whiskeys from all over the world, costs about 2000 JPY per 1.5 oz, but it should be really fun times.
There's also a store pretty close to where I live that has a very nice collection of whiskeys, but super overpriced though, being inside Isetan and all...
Green Spot is another very nice Irish whiskey imo.
====
I recent got into Japanese whiskey and they are very good
I recently bought three bottles: Yoichi (12), Yamazaki (10) and Taketsuru (12)
+ Show Spoiler + Yoichi has this hint of burnt flavour to it, which is quite interesting
Yamazaki is super smooth
Taketsuru tastes somewhat similar to Jack which is somewhat rugged and harsh
I think I prefer Taketsuru on most days.

On Johnie Walker. I consider myself a pretty heavy Johnie drinker. I don't think I've ever lived in a place without at least one bottle of black label. From time to time, I've had my fair sips of Green, Gold and Blue, my overall impression is that, it's a decent drop, but it's overrated/overpriced.
For the price of Gold and especially Blue, you can get far better tasting whiskeys... obviously based on my personal preference.

think last time i paid like 33€ for my bottle rare breed which is pretty cheap (afair the blasda and lagavulin12 were both ~65€, paid ~166 for all three together.). for that price its def worth buying. plus it got quite some power (108.2 proof in the current edition)so you really get alot of nice sweet warm taste for your money.imho the rare breed is one of the best bang/buck bourbons out there together with makers mark(which is just dirt cheap).

could you elaborate on the yamazaki 18? interested in that one for quite a while but the pricetag kept me from buying it so far...
also what would be your favorite bang/buck japanese whisky?
|
thanks for the reply! as for the yamazaki 18, it's pretty darn complex. it's got tastes of dried fruit - especially cherries and raisins. hints of vanilla. very soft and long finish. it's quite nice, but expensive. i just tried a tasting while at the distillery (much cheaper than buying a bottle of the stuff). but believe, if i could afford it, it would be mine. it'd be good for a special occasion. as far as the best "bang for your buck" japanese whiskey, i think you get quite a good value from the yamazaki 12 year.
