- ardberg supernova and alligator (really peaty, supernova is more refined with more complex flavors, alligator is little bit more rough) - bowmore tempest (very fruity, awesome citron flavors) - smokehead 12 and 18 year old (both very smoky as the name suggests, 18y is more refined with a broader taste palate, 12y more rough) - suntory yamazaki 18y and hakushu 12y (awesome japanese whisky, yamazaki is smokey yet sweet and in my opinion one of the best whiskys to try if you want to experience some of the more refined whiskys. hakushu has a very unique "forest"/grass taste that is hard to describe but unlike anything i've ever tasted in other whiskys)

And to the guy who said 40 Creek > Crown: you're 100% right. I really can't stress enough how smooth and easy 40 Creek Confederation Oak is. ![]() Get some.

The Yamazaki is also very good, though, and you can get the 12y for as cheap as $35, bringing it pretty much into the "casual drinking" price range :-D Unfortunately the Hakushu is only sold in Japan (or so I was told at the airport). The Taiwanese Kavalan brand of whiskys are also quite nice, though very young. In general, Asian people are pretty serious about their whisky, so give them a try if you get the chance! For mixing Old Fashioneds and other cocktails, I tend to prefer bourbons such as Maker's Mark.

Anyway. I wanted to let you all know about this perfect "little" hotel in Switzerland, St.Moritz. http://www.waldhaus-am-see.ch/Hotel/tabid/38/language/en-US/Default.aspx Its something like....the best/most expansive 3star hotel in swis. They have a bar with 3000 different whiskies on offer and there are at least a thousand more in the vaults! ![]() And this is just a single room, there is a lot more ![]()

![]() My favorites are from Speyside and Highlands. I buy those when not feeling experimental: Balvenie 12Y Double Wood (Bought this one pretty often. Currently got a bottle of Balvenie 12Y Signature, finished in Sherry and 2x Bourbon casks, which is good also) Glenmorangie 12Y with some finish (Quinta Ruban, Lasanta, Nectar d'Or... don't like the standard 12Y too much, don't know why exactly) Glenlivet 12Y (Taste reminds me of the sweet smell of pipe smoke. Other fills are fine, too) Although tasting them quite often, I don't like the peaty/Islay ones too much (Laga, Laph, Bruich, etc.). Maybe I still have to find the right one for me there. @jdseemoreglass: Great, now I instantly want to try bitter chocolate with some whisky. This combination never occurred to me, but my taste-predictor tells me its awesome! PS: Very little experience with them, but canadian and irish whiskys generally seemed fine, too. Also interested in some of the japanese brands. I know some of the original scotch distilleries were bought by japanese firms. This probably explains why the japanese brands are considered to be much like single malts?

You can get the Hakushu outside of Japan (altough it seems to be harder these days because of all the testing for contaminated foods leaving Japan) on Online stores like http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2922.aspx or very good equipped Whisky stores. If you haven't already you should definitely check out the 18y old Yamazaki it's definitely worth the additional price!
