Hey, I like Drake, and even I think you're being quite rude here. Take a step back and look at all the aggression and rage with which you've responded to other people - it's the attitude which people have problems with. Chill out a bit, man. Also, just because other people are BM doesn't mean you get to be BM back at them, unless you're five. +1 for Yes Best pianist I've heard without a doubt, expression, clarity, power and ease all in one package: Martha Argerich.

It is beautiful Bobby Mcferrin clip More Bobby Mcferrin Watched the first clip. Not really on topic but WOW anyways. Bobby McFerrin unfortunately only ever gets remembered for "don't worry be happy" which he knocked off in like an hour just goofing around and somehow became a hit.

I play that song at my own shows, when I used to play shows a lot. It is so amazing. Could you try to explain what is so amazing about the song? I've tried searching around to see if this is an acoustic version or something, but apparently it's the original. To my uninitiated ears, this sounds just like something that someone would play at a campfire after they'd finished playing wonderwall : standard D-A-G chord scheme that's used in about 10.000 other songs(see: this), generic strumming and some lyrics about coming home. What am I missing? As for favorites: can I name a duo? Ludwig van Beethoven and Wilhelm Kempff - brilliant composer and master pianist. I don't think I've ever heard someone who interprets his music so perfectly: all the right feeling at the right places, nearly silent when it needs to be and powerful when appropriate. As for Beethoven, while many people will only know him for his 5th symphony (and most of the time only the six opening chords...), what I love most about his work is his piano sonatas. There's a sense of bittersweet drama and emotion in there that is unmatched by any other composers I've heard so far. I believe many people will be pretty familiar with his Moonlight sonata, first movement. What many people don't know is that that sonata has three parts;) The 'famous' one is just the first. Here's the third, showcasing exactly why I think Kempff is so brilliant. Yes, there are a few mistakes in there, probably attributable to old age. However, the feeling put into this rendition is unlike any others I've seen, where the pianist seems to want to race through it and set a time record. This man is playing a piece that is almost a constant stream of notes and manages to make it sound quiet, threatening and calm at times. Simply amazing. I'll probably post something more contemporary when I think about it (and manage to decide between a few alternatives;)).

I'm actually surprised no one mentioned Les Claypool from Primus yet. Guess there's not many bass players around ![]() Then there's all talent on Candyrat records. You pretty much just have to search for Candyrat on youtube and click a random video to get to listen to some amazing musicians. Two of my personal favourites are

Possibly the greatest guitarist to ever live, that no one knows about. The man could play piano as well as his guitar. He died in his early 40's because of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, which made him hardly able to walk, yet he could play guitar like no ones business. my favorite solo right here, hes in his really early 20's, and never heard anyone even come close to this. and apprently Billy Gibbons of ZZTop literally fell out of his chair when he saw Shawn play for the first time, said it in some guitar magazine. and some my favorite songs and now his piano skills + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48B6QEr6crU&feature=related

The RZA is the leader of the Wu Tang Clan, he's the head of the Wu with his cousin, the GZA. In 1993 RZA produce the entire album, Enter the wu tang 36 chambers wich became one of the greatest hip hop album of all time. But things just got started, in 1994-1995 he produce Gza's first album and Raekwon's first album wich they are both also considered some of the best hip hop album of all time. in 1994-95, rza produce tons of albums(he produced solo album to all 9 wu tang members (duh, exept U GOD)and to alot of affilliates, the wu tang killa beez)hes just a master on the sampling machine. he did music for movies also, kill bill - blade and shits peace

I have found maybe 2 people ever who agree with me on this one so w/e. Did not know this. Van Morrison I have no problem believeing this about but - Django Reinhardt? No improvisation? Even in the Paris Hot Club period? 'Cause Stephane Grappelli was definitely an improviser. Edit: from wikipedia: Maybe that's what you're thinking of. I'm pretty sure Django was an improviser. Yeah that Wiki entry may be true, though it's unlikely any of those improvisation sessions ever made it onto a proper LP release. The next sentence says his assistant noted it down, so I suppose we can assume he would later revisit them later. But in that sense, all musicians are improvisers. When you talk about improvisation in musical releases, you think of somebody who gets into the studio not knowing what he/she is going to do. In guitar improv, I think Taku Sugimoto, Derek Bailey and Masayuki Takayanagi are the more known names. Check them out, quite different to the clear structure found in Django's music.

But not surprising since TL is a SC forum not a music forum. True, the meaning of "best" relies entirely on how you define "musician". One could argue that someone with great songwriting skills is a great musician, even if their playing is shit. You could also argue that Yngwie Malmsteen is the undisputed best because he can shred like nobody's business, even though his writing is mostly your standard neo-classical metal fare. I'd guess the total package is most meaningful. As for how this thread is interpreted, note the OP says: "If you have to pick one band/artist to listen to for the rest of your life.." Of course that could somehow throw off the answer given as well - I love porcupine tree but if I listened to them non-stop I'd probably be clinically depressed by now. Now that I think about it, picking an artist/band instead of a song/piece seems backwards. That just seems to encourage fanboyism about one band/artist instead of it being about the music. There are quite a few songs that are absolutely brilliant, yet the rest of the artists work is utter shit or mediocre at best.
