KEEP NEGATIVE OPINIONS OUT OF THIS, THIS IS A THREAD ABOUT THE TALENT IN DIVERSITY, NOT ABOUT WHY THIS PERSON IS BAD OR NOT, PLEASE RESPECT OUR DIFFERENCES IN TASTE AND AS ALWAYS CONTRIBUTE
ok guys i love music. the word love is probably not even good enough to describe my passion for it. i know there are many taste out there, but i was wondering, if you could only choose 1 artist/band in the world you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be? and list at your top 3 favorite songs or youtube videos from that artist as a sample to their genius.
i introduce to you none other than, the weeknd.
a fairly young artist based out in Toronto at the age of 21 years and was founded by none other than drake himself. but the thing is, drake didn't partner with him for the fact he saw talent, drake put him under his wing so drake himself can draw inspiration and learn from him which is what amazes me with this guy's talent. still unsigned and underground with only 2 mixtapes. you will rarely ever find an artist who instead of tries to form their music around the current styles that exist, push their own new genre. the music is generally a new kind. an alternative rock induced rnb with an underlying theme of sexuality. my type of music is based by how "real" it is or how i can relate to the artist's dilemma within the music, and i have to admit, this person personifies that perfectly.
so here are 3 of my favorite songs by him and i have to admit one of them was playing when i got laid so cheers to the weeknd.
High For This (As seen on entourage season 8 promo)
The Zone
Wicked Games
all my favorite artist's till this day, most of their music generally had to "sink-in" before i fell in love with it, but the moment i heard the weeknd, it was love at first sight. after hearing it, i could literally not listen to anything else that i considered "good" in the past. so i'd like to allow anyone else to share these amazing artists that, may or may not be heard by the general public so we can see the diversity in this thing we call music and the talent behind it. remember 1 artist/band only and probably the one you would consider the best out of everyone you'd listen to / the rest of your life
lmfao i agree. i've never ever wanted to spend money on a CD no matter who's it was cause i could always download it, but for the weeknd i'd pay him literally for his new mixtape to come out earlier, echoes of silence. OVOXO
Ludovico Einaudi for me easily. I never have been that into classical music or piano in general. But his expression and immense amounts of passion that he conveys though his music just baffles me.

good job my friend i've never listened to classical either and the closest i've come to piano was japanese, more so along the lines of final fantasy but this i can definitely appreciate. i got goosebumps from it within the first minute. love it at 2:06
if you haven't heard japanese piano from final fantasy orchestrated you definitely want to check it out because i'd say it comes really close to this and is the thing that gives me goosbumps the most in piano.
(this is a remake of it by fans, sounds exactly the same) and i'll admit i cried to this
please guys put your favorite song or 2-3 songs with youtube links so we can easily figure out why you like the artist and the reason why they're good. its hard for me to look up people and decide if i like them or not by clicking on a random song that may or may not be a good representation of their best.
nice! i've actually heard about IU i think it was on one of the GSL pre opening music and saw her videos. she's a good alternative to me listening to BoA most of my teen years lol

Holy shit. Unlike a thread i will not name, this one is actually all good stuff lol
And i'm going to have to go with the obligatory..... Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
I'll only post one song since it's 22 minutes long. But it's worth it. You'll want to skip to where the song "starts" but please don't. It's an experience.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78D00dYOBrM Probably one of Alex's best solo's. Very musical with an awesome gradual build in intensity. Not to mention Geddy's sick bass solo at 3:29 xD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukz_T9HFLJU Incredible sound, with one of the wackiest solo's I've ever heard. The 5/4 time signature just flows too seamlessly, it's inhuman.

first off, i honestly don't give a fuck since the guy i named isn't drake. and second, this is a thread i made about music sharing and contribution which you already knew, is based on opinion. if you have nothing to contribute at the end of the day except support the opinion of a troll, STFU. how i happen to rationalize why someone is talented or not, is up to me to believe but does not encompass all artists. if this was true the weeknd would be making millions, which he doesn't. so who the fuck are you to come into this thread, not contribute shit, and think you have a valued opinion?

Nujabes is a pretty good hip-hop producer, but he is in no way the best. The best producer is undisputably DJ Premier.
Well, music debates will be music debates.
I think Nujabes and DJ Premier aren't very comparable (I haven't exactly listened to a lot of DJ Premier's stuff fyi). They're both hip-hop producers in a general sense but influence different subgenres. When people think of Nujabes, the related artists that pop up are people like Uyama Hiroto, Nomak, j-hip hop and related, versus DJ Premier's more 'western' connections.

This is a hard one...it would most likely be The Mountain Goats. John Darnielle is one of the best flat-out songwriters I have ever heard. each song is a wonderful story in itself. Here is not the best example, but a song that I will always listen to:
Nobuo Uematsu. No other music can make me feel how his makes me feel. Although I wasn't a sheltered - in the basement nerd all day kid, I played (still play) a lot of fucking Final Fantasy (and other sick SNES, PS2 games), and it just punches me in the heart with nostalgia and peace of mind. wrong yet again. i have never in this thread out rightly attacked someone based on their differences and preference in taste of music. i love how you can twist the scenario around. in fact i have only openly respected everyone's contribution in music whether or not i may be a fan. and i also love how you can somehow paint someone as guilty of BM because they defended their own opinion or their own taste in music for that matter. you need to look at what's truly "mature" and grow up. cause bashing someone for a certain type of music "makes a whole lotta sense" you truly are the authority on what's good and what's not.

well that wasn't the ONLY all encompassing reason to why he's good but one of the testimony more or less. there's a million ways to rationalize why someone's good or successful and that was the first one that came to mind. now obviously i have to put a idiot warning on that since by no means does it 100% justifies his success nor to the sole reason why he's good just to clear that up. and i don't mean that no one else is good, if they're not making money. hope that helps. i don't want to be getting responses like "well soulja boy makes millions, he's good by your logic" responses lolol.
keep up the good work guys, i'm giving everyone's music a listen/try without pre-judgements. i definitly want to expand the horizon of my taste from my little old preferences of japanese/rnb/hip hop genre/rock
Yes is amazing, I was thinking about posting them too. But, since you already did that, I'll post a nice 2nd option. For all the Jazz lovers out there, may I present, Jamie Cullum.
Next, an original, that for the most part sticks to his Jazz roots
And finally, Jazz mixed with a bit of dance-type music. It really shows how he's able to move seamlessly through different genres without making it seem weird. He's also done covers of such varied artists as Rihanna, The White Stripes, and Jimi Hendrix successfully, giving each song his own style.
Lots of good bands/musicians have been named in here. Honestly though, my absolute favorite musician right now is Childish Gambino. Not only are his beats sick, but his lyrics are easily the best that I've ever heard.

I totally agree. It's my absolute favorite for about last two years and i can't see how it can change in near future. Every piece of music he works on is masterpiece. And he is still rather young (about 40) and don't have bad behaviors. I can see he will dominate for maybe 10-20 years more on the scene. He is the last bonjwa in music (Starcraft analogy ).
Django Reinhardt or Van Morrison, while great musicians, aren't improvisers. It's like John Fahey, a lot of people tend to think their works are improvisations but it's all composed.

Did not know this. Van Morrison I have no problem believeing this about but - Django Reinhardt? No improvisation? Even in the Paris Hot Club period? 'Cause Stephane Grappelli was definitely an improviser.
Edit: from wikipedia:
Reinhardt's problems were compounded by the fact that the Nazis also officially disapproved of jazz. Reinhardt became interested in other musical directions, attempting to write a Mass for the Gypsies and Symphony (since he could not write music, he would perform improvisations to be notated by an assistant). His modernist piece Rhythm Futur was intended to be acceptably unjazzlike.
Maybe that's what you're thinking of. I'm pretty sure Django was an improviser.

Ha. I did read past the title too. Guess I was too excited to post a musician. Shame on me.
Pity, though. Individual musicians would have made this thread at least somewhat unique. There's a gazillion of these for bands.
ha yeah i definitely should have thought of that when i made it it would be really unique to see just 1 artist. none the less the fact i make people choose only 1 for their whole lives still keeps it interesting, you see nothing but quality music in this thread AND i believe it's a great intro for others to get out of their box and into different genres. there is bit more leverage into giving other music a try when someone can say, this is the only person i chose over everyone else so there's definitely some reason as to why they're good or why you should give them a chance. none the less that shouldn't stop you from posting your 1 musician/ artist instead of a band.

definitely doesn't exclude you. i would give your music a try if you whole heartedly believed he was the best you've heard. i've been there where i've felt no one understood my music or would even give it a chance so i know how that feels.
If I were to choose one musician, I'd pick a classical pianist by the name of Gyorgy Cziffra. Unbelievable technique, phrasing, and improvisation. Here's a godly improvisation of the William Tell overture:
lol at the Youtube comments. Never seen a unanimous HOLY SHIT piano video than this one.

yeah i was about to change it but, this is interesting the way it's going making people rank 1 over all other genres. i'll definitely make a separate thread later on when this one dies out about the best 1 in each of their favorite genres cause i have alot of other artist i feel are definitely the best in their own genre and need mentioning!

For me, it has to be Devin Townsend. He has so much fucking talent it's disgusting, the things he can do with his voice and his guitar is nothing short of godly. Whatever sound you like, that man can put out. From heavy metal to kick back relaxing watching the scenery type of music, he does it all. I would like anyone who enjoys good music to please at least try out some Devy.
Not only is his music great, but his songs have very very deep meaning, that I'm sure a lot of you could relate to. Some of it is literally amazing...
His songs have literally changed my life in many ways as he's completely shown me a different perspective on how to view things.
One of the best things, is that he is a completely down to earth man.
I am going to post videos some videos displaying his talent
someone else posted this artist earlier but the first song was about crack in a girl's ass lol, none the less regarding of content, he has great flow. crisp and clear in delivery, reminds me of a explicit lupe that's a bit clearer.

well that's your opinion so you can stay out of this thread. last i checked he's making millions producing music i think that's talent.
first of all this thread is based on opinion, its not a drake fanclub thread. its a thread about musicians. if he doesnt think drake is talented, then who the fuck are you to tell him his opinion is wrong? last time i checked, you dont have to make millions to be talented, and you dont have to be talented to make millions.
first off, i honestly don't give a fuck since the guy i named isn't drake. and second, this is a thread i made about music sharing and contribution which you already knew, is based on opinion. if you have nothing to contribute at the end of the day except support the opinion of a troll, STFU. how i happen to rationalize why someone is talented or not, is up to me to believe but does not encompass all artists. if this was true the weeknd would be making millions, which he doesn't. so who the fuck are you to come into this thread, not contribute shit, and think you have a valued opinion?
In a world where facts are irrelevant, Either all opinions are valuable or none are.
QFT
Stop telling him this is an opinion thread if you don't even respect his opinion, OP.
Also, take it to PMs if you're not contributing to the thread. OP, you need to manner up. Drake is awful, so what.
trolls keep feeding trolls love it. you come at me with BM and you expect me to to be GM? lol what fucking world do you live in? let me make it clear for you, this thread is not about who you hate or who you don't think is talented, cause i can go into any music thread and read that bull shit. this is a thread about who you think is good and why. leave your negative opinions out of it. i guess it's asking too much of people to just contribute, respect our differences in taste and leave out the negativity.
honestly, youve been more BM than anyone else in the thread. you told some to gtfo because he didnt agree with you, and youve been a dick to several other people in the thread. there are trolls in every thread, and if youre so adamant about every single one that pops up, and you get pissed off so easily, then youre better off not even making a thread until you can handle it in a mature manner. "i guess it's asking too much of people to just contribute, respect our differences in taste and leave out the negativity" you say to the posters who dont like what you like? makes a whole lotta sense. and for the record, the musician i love listening to is Buckethead.
wrong yet again. i have never in this thread out rightly attacked someone based on their differences and preference in taste of music. i love how you can twist the scenario around. in fact i have only openly respected everyone's contribution in music whether or not i may be a fan. and i also love how you can somehow paint someone as guilty of BM because they defended their own opinion or their own taste in music for that matter. you need to look at what's truly "mature" and grow up. cause bashing someone for a certain type of music "makes a whole lotta sense" you truly are the authority on what's good and what's not.
Hey, I like Drake, and even I think you're being quite rude here. Take a step back and look at all the aggression and rage with which you've responded to other people - it's the attitude which people have problems with. Chill out a bit, man. Also, just because other people are BM doesn't mean you get to be BM back at them, unless you're five.
+1 for Yes
Best pianist I've heard without a doubt, expression, clarity, power and ease all in one package: Martha Argerich.
another one i honestly can't stop listening to by the weeknd. he switches his style into rapping with pitch shifts keeping true to this XO or xtasy and oxy overdose. further more it's about initiating a gang bang with a girl lmfao.

Could you try to explain what is so amazing about the song? I've tried searching around to see if this is an acoustic version or something, but apparently it's the original.
To my uninitiated ears, this sounds just like something that someone would play at a campfire after they'd finished playing wonderwall : standard D-A-G chord scheme that's used in about 10.000 other songs(see: this), generic strumming and some lyrics about coming home.
What am I missing?
As for favorites: can I name a duo? Ludwig van Beethoven and Wilhelm Kempff - brilliant composer and master pianist. I don't think I've ever heard someone who interprets his music so perfectly: all the right feeling at the right places, nearly silent when it needs to be and powerful when appropriate.
As for Beethoven, while many people will only know him for his 5th symphony (and most of the time only the six opening chords...), what I love most about his work is his piano sonatas. There's a sense of bittersweet drama and emotion in there that is unmatched by any other composers I've heard so far.
I believe many people will be pretty familiar with his Moonlight sonata, first movement.
What many people don't know is that that sonata has three parts;) The 'famous' one is just the first. Here's the third, showcasing exactly why I think Kempff is so brilliant. Yes, there are a few mistakes in there, probably attributable to old age. However, the feeling put into this rendition is unlike any others I've seen, where the pianist seems to want to race through it and set a time record. This man is playing a piece that is almost a constant stream of notes and manages to make it sound quiet, threatening and calm at times. Simply amazing.
I'll probably post something more contemporary when I think about it (and manage to decide between a few alternatives;)).
It's between this and the Cowboy Bebop(Yoko Kanno) OST for me right now. My favourite artist usually changes every month though, but i always go back to listening the old ones.
Buckethead will forever hold a special place in my heart. I feel he's one of the more well rounded guitarists alive today and most probably the most productive.
I'm actually surprised no one mentioned Les Claypool from Primus yet. Guess there's not many bass players around In my mind he's one of the most technically skilled and innovative base players.
Then there's all talent on Candyrat records. You pretty much just have to search for Candyrat on youtube and click a random video to get to listen to some amazing musicians. Two of my personal favourites are
Shawn Lane Possibly the greatest guitarist to ever live, that no one knows about. The man could play piano as well as his guitar. He died in his early 40's because of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, which made him hardly able to walk, yet he could play guitar like no ones business.
my favorite solo right here, hes in his really early 20's, and never heard anyone even come close to this. and apprently Billy Gibbons of ZZTop literally fell out of his chair when he saw Shawn play for the first time, said it in some guitar magazine.
My favourite group of all time is the Wu Tang, but espacially the RZA The RZA is the leader of the Wu Tang Clan, he's the head of the Wu with his cousin, the GZA. In 1993 RZA produce the entire album, Enter the wu tang 36 chambers wich became one of the greatest hip hop album of all time. But things just got started, in 1994-1995 he produce Gza's first album and Raekwon's first album wich they are both also considered some of the best hip hop album of all time. in 1994-95, rza produce tons of albums(he produced solo album to all 9 wu tang members (duh, exept U GOD)and to alot of affilliates, the wu tang killa beez)hes just a master on the sampling machine. he did music for movies also, kill bill - blade and shits

the music isn't anything special, its nice enough and suits the song perfectly but its not the point really. in the lyrics i would say i think "The most remarkable thing about coming home to you is the feeling of being in motion again: its the most extraordinary thing in the world" is one my favourite romantic lines ever written. basically though its just a love story written near perfectly love->losing love->boy goes and does something stupid (runs of somewhere in the middle of nowhere with an old gun)->redemption but written so simply yet hinting at wider detail that its really relateable for anyone who's done something stupid for love. one day i'm going to write a blog about the mountain goats on TL i think
Emil Gilels I think performs the most beautiful Beethoven. All Beethoven Piano sonata fans should have this - Last Piano Sonatas performed by Pollini.. Pollini really brings out the Modern touch, as I think Beethoven originally wanted and was moving his music towards.

Did not know this. Van Morrison I have no problem believeing this about but - Django Reinhardt? No improvisation? Even in the Paris Hot Club period? 'Cause Stephane Grappelli was definitely an improviser.
Yeah that Wiki entry may be true, though it's unlikely any of those improvisation sessions ever made it onto a proper LP release. The next sentence says his assistant noted it down, so I suppose we can assume he would later revisit them later. But in that sense, all musicians are improvisers. When you talk about improvisation in musical releases, you think of somebody who gets into the studio not knowing what he/she is going to do. In guitar improv, I think Taku Sugimoto, Derek Bailey and Masayuki Takayanagi are the more known names. Check them out, quite different to the clear structure found in Django's music.

True, the meaning of "best" relies entirely on how you define "musician". One could argue that someone with great songwriting skills is a great musician, even if their playing is shit. You could also argue that Yngwie Malmsteen is the undisputed best because he can shred like nobody's business, even though his writing is mostly your standard neo-classical metal fare.
I'd guess the total package is most meaningful.

Of course that could somehow throw off the answer given as well - I love porcupine tree but if I listened to them non-stop I'd probably be clinically depressed by now.
Now that I think about it, picking an artist/band instead of a song/piece seems backwards. That just seems to encourage fanboyism about one band/artist instead of it being about the music. There are quite a few songs that are absolutely brilliant, yet the rest of the artists work is utter shit or mediocre at best.

Love tool got to see them live earlier this year absolutely amazing, Lateralus live is really something. For me thought it would have to be Australian prog rockers Karnivool.
Seen these guys live multiple times and they never fail to disappoint, Drew's guitar is always tight and Kenny's Voice is always top notch!
I have so many favorites that I could never name only one, but I've been listening to a lot of Les Claypool lately so I'll throw him out there as one of my favs.
Hard to say,,, hmm,, gonna go with Joe Satriani. Your whole family could die before the show and you would still feel happy as shit after a live concert. No massive ego, he is all about the experience..
if you could only choose 1 artist/band in the world you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?
I want to congratulate the OP on masterfully implementing the question about our favorite musician, because it encourages not only picking the artist whose one song or album we like, but really dive into the depths of the artist's discography.
This thread has many good answers, so many great artists in here, I've actually spent the last hour just clicking random videos in the thread.
I am going to suggest the chameleon, David Bowie.
Remember, this is one artist for the rest of your life, that's a long time, hopefully. So I am going with a great artist that spans probably more genres and styles than most other artists, he has a huge collection of songs, so there's less risk of running dry than if picking a newer artist who simply doesn't have the same long history.
Changes - Old school Glam Rock
Heroes - a bit of an 80's song, but really just a great overall song.
Rebel Rebel - an awesome rock and roll song.
Golden Years - because disco is awesome too
Let's dance - post disco, because bowie can.
Little Wonder - Some industrial rock
This could go on and on... Just to mention some ridiculously famous and good songs I've not linked
Space Oddity The Man Who Sold The World Life On Mars Ashes To Ashes Hello Spaceboy Diamond Dogs Sorrow Ziggy Stardust Starman Oh! You Pretty Things Sound And Vision Song For Bob Dylan Under Pressure
etc etc etc.
And that's just his "hits". If you explore the depths of his albums you realize how much stuff is on them that is really, really good.
Truly one of the musical geniuses of our times, I think David Bowie is a worthy contender for the most complete and interesting discography by one artist.
Enter the beginning of the angsty teen years, enter metal. Also started discovering techno, but Metallica were always my favorites at that age. + Show Spoiler [age 15-19] +
Techno was nice and all, but then I discovered Simon "The Hallucinogenius" Posford. Finally someone who took electronic music to some place that moved me, body and mind. Beyond Hallucinogen for psytrance, his works as Shpongle, Celtic Cross and Younger Brother opened me to the wonderful world of non-mainstream electronic music. + Show Spoiler [age 20-24] +
And at this point, I discovered the "out there" electronica. There is thinking outside the box, and then there is smashing it with baseball bats. Aphex Twin used a chainsaw. His music ranges from silly and slightly bonky to deep mental breakdowns... in what I consider some of the boldest music ever made, he is the first electronic musician to put his soul on a plate in the chilling "...I Care Because You Do". + Show Spoiler [age 25+] +
After many years of my tastes wondering all over the place, I ended up with Dark Side of the Moon as my favorite album. Not a very original choice, sure. But it is the best album ever, in any genre, hands down, as far as I'm concerned.

lol if we are arguing "great songwriting skills" then it would be moronic to suggest anyone other than Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mahler, etc.
Now i think about it i need to add Kanye West. He got the time, the money and the artists to create a My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and he did deliver. The first chorus of the album made me jizz in my pants

No one is arguing that, the question is perfectly clear in the OP. We're not arguing songwriting or instrument playing skill, we're picking which artist's complete works we'd like to have with us stranded for life on a deserted island. It has nothing to do with ability, and everything to do with preference.
It's the best way of presenting the question, but you're being an asshole and belittling people's opinions.
Please stop it, you're not even arguing what the thread is a bout.
I'd have to divide into different genres. For my favorites...
Indie/Alternative - Elliot Smith. You probably either love it or hate it. My favorite quote about elliot smith was written on his memorial wall, reading: "It was never so much music as medicine".
1) The Biggest Lie 2) St. Ides Heaven 3) Coming up Roses
Folk - As an Artist, I don't think you can make a case for anyone but Bob Dylan (maybe Neil Young, but I think Dylan is clearly better). His song writing was just immaculate. As a Performing artist, however, Bob Dylan is fucking awful. I HATE bob dylan's voice but love his music. As a total package, I really enjoy mumford and sons.
1) I shall be released 2) Tangled Up In Blue 3) Like a Rolling Stone
Punk/Hardcore: Ramones. I wanted to say Rise Against, but there is not better Punk Band than the Ramones. The Clash was close, but the ramones are just...the ramones.
1) Bonzo goes to Bithburg 2) I wanna be sedated 3) Sheena is a Punk rocker
Rock/Pop - Red Hot Chili Peppers. I know some people hate them with a passion, but RHCP is just so much a part of our generation. From the days of the cock sock to the more modern band, they've given us so much. Remember when Under the Bridge first hit? Scar Tissue, Californication, Otherside? All iconic songs. Even the lesser known songs made a significant impact. Roller Coaster (of lulz) Snow, Higher Ground. Just a great band.
1) Snow ((Hey Oh) 2) Can't Stop 3) Scar Tissue
ALL TIME: Stevie Motherfucking Wonder. No explanation needed
1) Livin' for the city 2) I just called to say I love you 3) Signed Sealed Delivered
is this about artists seen live or just heard? ill do both!
LIVE: Chris Cornell - (lead singer of Soundgarden/Audioslave) he did an acoustic concert in my city, was phenominal! John Fogerty - (lead singer of CCR) he did a Canada tour years back, was an amazing concert to just see a legend like that up on stage!! Hilltop Hoods - awesome aussie hiphop
best artists to name a couple who i've heard over the years Buddy Holly, Travelling Willburry's, Stevie Ray Vaughan, lead singer the Alice In Chains (the one that died) Andrea bocceli. and Eminem
I'm a bass player, so that huuuugely influences what I like/listen to/appreciate.
The most impressed I've ever been by a musician is Victor Wooten, without a shadow of a doubt. The man can make a bass sing, and I'd be honoured to even have 10% of the talent he has.
But when it comes to music and what I actually listen to, two different bassists compete for the top spot for me:
Flea, who could make energetic bass fit into a power ballad. He makes RHCP what they are. I struggled to pick a single song to sum him up, but I do like this one:
This song was the first I spent a considerable amount of time learning to play, and I doubt I'll ever forget how to play it.
And finally I've got to give a shout to Les Claypool for being creative. His music (along with that of his former band, Primus) is intensely weird and is something of an acquired taste, but I love it.
Im not gonna post links cause its kind of blatant arrogant self promotion, but if id give a serious answer to the question asked in the OP id say the only music i could listen to if i only got to pick one artist for the rest of my life would be me. No one else makes music that sounds exactly the way i want to. Its the least probable scenario where id be tired of the music.
Edit: If i was forced to pick someone else, it would probably be Gabriel & Dresden, but i dont know if it would last for the rest of my life

This performance makes it seem that he would rather have been a guitar player, with the sweep picking and all;) Could have gotten a 7-string or one of these to still get some low-end punch, perhaps? Nice playing, although like I said, I doubt the bass is really the instrument of choice for a solo like that. Even with his technique, half the swept notes disappear into plucking noise.

Not much to explain here. His live performances are better then the CD's and he shows amazing and touching guitar play without just trying to play fast.

Explain what the definition of what agood musician is. I want to stay away from negatively commenting on some of the artists posted here, so I think I will just stay away from this topic from now.
If i had to pick only 1 band to listen to for the rest of my life i would pick Metallica. But In Flames is my best band. So a good musician would be Anders Fridén, vocalist in the band.

Victor came from a very musical family (Futureman is one of his brothers) and started playing the bass really early (was playing in front of audiences at like 5 or 6 years old). The reason his style is so unique has to do with growing up in a home full of musicians, none of whom played bass as their main instrument. Victor's style is a mix of watching/playing with other musicians play other instruments so you have elements of guitar, percussion, and a lot of keyboard/piano 'sounds' coming out of a instrument that was usually reserved for pounding the root and holding the groove.
To add my musician to the mix:
Mike Patton.
The guy has been involved with so many musical projects that span so many genres, even if you hate some of his stuff, you will probably love something else he did that same year. He is involved in almost every aspect of the projects he works on: writing/singing/producing/playing instruments.
Here are some of my favorite tracks from a couple of his projects:
I have to say Varg Vikernes of Burzum. I don't think raw technical skill or writing good riffs or something is a good measure of musical talent. I personally am really impressed when I listen to Burzum. Even though it doesn't generally have epic kick ass melodies (quite the opposite), but it sounds so hypnotic and awesome and takes me 15-30 minutes to stop having a massive brainfuck. Though it requires a certain type of mental state to work properly + Show Spoiler +
I am a big fan of the weeknd as well. I don't know if I can narrow it down to one person so easily but for me the first person who comes to my mind whenever I hear a question like this is...
Seriously the sickest guitar player..such a cool relaxed style combined with intense speed, please do yourself a favor and listen to this entire song...the end will blow your mind it seriously sounds likd there is 3 people playing the guitar at once.
Anything made by either Hiatus is amazing, coupled with the voice of Shura it's amazing, they've done a few collabs, this is the best imo

I'll say Shoji Meguro, but it's more like ambiant sound, tho a big amount of his songs can be heard but still haha. I'd say Poets Of the Fall, they're dudes who never lost and won't ever lost their head with money, and meh, I met Marko, you can't know that he is an artist if you never listened :
Lift(Esp for the clip)
Illusion&Dream, one of the very firsts one I heard(well, I knew the band with Max Payne 2 haha)
Desire : Not the best song of the band, but I have a big story behind it, so that's why it's my favorite I think.
I'm really surprised no one's mentioned Miles Davis.
Especially how the OP defines the musician as someone "you could listen to for the rest of your life", Miles Davis has such a broad spectrum of styles, and his compositions, improvisation, and overall feel to the music are all brilliant. Not only that, but he had a great ear for picking talented musicians. His bands were always top-notch players who are also some of my favorite musicians: John Mclaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and plenty more.
there's plenty of great and amazing musicians out there. i have eclectic taste. but the most influential and most favourite group of musicians in MY life would be the beatles. everyone's heard the popular songs like yesterday and hey jude like i have, but when beatles rockband came out, i was instantly smitten by the less unheard of songs and delved deeper into the world of beatles. the songs are sweet, sometimes naive, but calming.
Nujabes.. has officially done it for me <3 his music just somewhat perfect for my tastes. Maynard James Kennan, damn I love his vocals~ seriously his voice has this seductive calmness to it.
I can't just not list any Korean musicians here! Gummy and Zia just make me drool and it's one of the many artists I listen to, to relax.
The lack of Dire Straits in here is disturbing - I'd better correct it!
First off one of my favorite tracks, but not a very well known one.
Then there's a THIS one... Yea, it's a live version, it kicks the studio versions butt.
As a finisher, another live track
Personally, I've loved Dire Straits ever since I first heard them, and I'll hopefully continue to do so for a long time. Been fortunate enough to catch Knopfler live 3 times here in Denmark as well, though I dislike the way he've turned recently with his music, I would've preferred him to turn into the oldest Dire Straits style, the "let's tell a story and throw in some guitar/bass/drum" style.

Oh shit thank you for posting this lol a friend sent me some Shpongle tracks a while ago and I just fell in love. Do you have any other recommendations that are similar?
I agree with most of these posts (except Skrillex, which is not bad but doesnt belong here, succesful troll is succesful =)), especially Poets of the Fall is amazing, go Finland go!!
Id like to add one mr. Noel Gallagher to the list. Just listen to his fresh new album! Genius stuff. Though half of the songs are written like 10 years ago..but thats beside the point =)
Are we meaning only one musician? If so, Ray Manzarek was easily one of the most widely skilled musical savants of time. Or anyone from Rush, as Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are pretty much the masters of their instruments.
If we mean just favorite, and include singers? Either 2pac or Jim Morrison.

well that's your opinion so you can stay out of this thread. last i checked he's making millions producing music i think that's talent.
first of all this thread is based on opinion, its not a drake fanclub thread. its a thread about musicians. if he doesnt think drake is talented, then who the fuck are you to tell him his opinion is wrong? last time i checked, you dont have to make millions to be talented, and you dont have to be talented to make millions.
first off, i honestly don't give a fuck since the guy i named isn't drake. and second, this is a thread i made about music sharing and contribution which you already knew, is based on opinion. if you have nothing to contribute at the end of the day except support the opinion of a troll, STFU. how i happen to rationalize why someone is talented or not, is up to me to believe but does not encompass all artists. if this was true the weeknd would be making millions, which he doesn't. so who the fuck are you to come into this thread, not contribute shit, and think you have a valued opinion?
In a world where facts are irrelevant, Either all opinions are valuable or none are.
I'm kidding of course. The whole "it's just an opinion" point of view of laughable. Is Science just an opinion? It could easily be spun that way (by idiots).

I'm currently deciding whether I want to say Petrucci or Michael Romeo (Symphony X). Petrucci's playing is crazy clean, but his writing has been a bit shite for some years. His work from Images and Words is fantastic and really melodic, brilliance on Scenes, yet from there on out he seemed to have discovered that you can play the same scales, preferably chromatic, *really* fast and call it a solo.
Romeo, while a bit less clean, has managed to shake that aspect of soloing and just play stuff that you don't expect him to do. His solos and melodies seem to 'jump around' a lot more than the linear-ish Petrucci riffs. Also, Romeo seems to be doing more stuff and adding more details when he's just playing rhythm.
I realize of course that solos are not what define a guitarist/musician, but in their relative styles of music, they play quite a large part.

Gonna close this tab before I barf.
Don't compare Django to Van Morrison dude. Django could improvise like a mofo. He did compose a lot of work but there is just absolutely no way someone with an understanding of jazz at that level would not know how to improvise.
Also Hermeto Pascoal. Brazilian Jazz Fusion and he plays a ridiculous amount of instruments masterfully.
Emily Haines - Bottom Of The World I have to go with Emily Haines.A voice I can't get enough of.The nice smoothness, the sweetness of the calming voice. Some people who claim to have met her say that she is rather arrogant or something along those lines but I love her voice nevertheless.
(Hi TL, long time lurker here, unburrowing for this thread)
I'm thoroughly surprised nobody truly mentioned Richard D. James, commonly known as Aphex Twin. Nobody puts the technological humanity in perspective so much as he does. He crafts his patches as though he's a master pianist, but using electronics instead of acoustics. It might be easy to dismiss him as gimmicky or slightly insane due to the high-energy compositions in Drukqs and Come to Daddy, but the man knows exactly what he's doing. Aphex Twin is a musical mastermind molded in modern chaos.
unique soundscapes
relentless techno
beautiful basement dwelling
mind/machine
I'm inclined to mention Brian Eno as well, whose music is fantastical and even more diverse than Aphex Twin's, but doesn't appeal to my technological craving.
Every time a thread like this pops up, I always respond with the same name. I know, I'm sorry, but she is too perfect: Nana Mizuki.
Such beautiful music and then she can sing songs like these too
this is actually a pretty poor performance from her as it was the end of a 12 week tour.
I love everything about this woman: her voice fluctuations, songs, personality, enthusiasm, live performances which I still have not yet had the honor of seeing...she is a goddess of music.
Buckethead. Without a doubt the greatest guitarist to ever play. Makes the guitar sound like so much more than just an instrument, makes it sound like his life is coming out of the music he plays.
I keep seeing Tommy Emmanuel and it's really funny to me considering I have met him but never realised that he was famous haha. A girl in my highschool class was his niece and he came in one day and talked to us in a music lesson and I was always sorta confused why he was there :/ Found out like a year or 2 after but never looked up any of his stuff. It's really good :D

I'll go with Adam Green on this on, hes just so damn funny, ive been to one of his concerts, and his music has something you just cant comprehend, and i keep asking what he is trying to say with his strange lyrics..
I dont know that I'd say he's my favorite musician of all time, but the favorite I have had the pleasure of seing live (Jose Gonzalez is a close second).
IN MY OPINION (very sad that this has to be mentioned to avoid people flaming what you think), Jason Mraz is one of the greatest musicians that I know. Whenever he performs live, it is so obvious how passionate he is of what he does.
Not only that, I really admire his personality and philosophies. World would be a much better place with more people like him.
