I wouldn't say the greatest, but by far the most underrated musician I've heard: Soulostar.

He makes chill, Epik High/Nujabes-inspired beats. Some of his work is truly inspirational.

Django Reinhardt or Van Morrison, while great musicians, aren't improvisers. It's like John Fahey, a lot of people tend to think their works are improvisations but it's all composed.

Mark Knopfler. 100%. Got to see him live once and it was the best show I've ever seen (and I've seen some good shows too). I have found maybe 2 people ever who agree with me on this one so w/e.

Did not know this. Van Morrison I have no problem believeing this about but - Django Reinhardt? No improvisation? Even in the Paris Hot Club period? 'Cause Stephane Grappelli was definitely an improviser.

Edit: from wikipedia:
Reinhardt's problems were compounded by the fact that the Nazis also officially disapproved of jazz. Reinhardt became interested in other musical directions, attempting to write a Mass for the Gypsies and Symphony (since he could not write music, he would perform improvisations to be notated by an assistant). His modernist piece Rhythm Futur was intended to be acceptably unjazzlike.

Maybe that's what you're thinking of. I'm pretty sure Django was an improviser.

if you could only choose 1 artist/band in the world you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?

Try reading past the title next time.

Ha. I did read past the title too. Guess I was too excited to post a musician. Shame on me.

Pity, though. Individual musicians would have made this thread at least somewhat unique. There's a gazillion of these for bands.

ha yeah i definitely should have thought of that when i made it
it would be really unique to see just 1 artist.
none the less the fact i make people choose only 1 for their whole lives still keeps it interesting, you see nothing but quality music in this thread AND i believe it's a great intro for others to get out of their box and into different genres. there is bit more leverage into giving other music a try when someone can say, this is the only person i chose over everyone else so there's definitely some reason as to why they're good or why you should give them a chance.
none the less that shouldn't stop you from posting your 1 musician/ artist instead of a band.

definitely doesn't exclude you. i would give your music a try if you whole heartedly believed he was the best you've heard. i've been there where i've felt no one understood my music or would even give it a chance so i know how that feels.

If I were to choose one musician, I'd pick a classical pianist by the name of Gyorgy Cziffra. Unbelievable technique, phrasing, and improvisation. Here's a godly improvisation of the William Tell overture:

lol at the Youtube comments. Never seen a unanimous HOLY SHIT piano video than this one.

Also +1 to Godspeed You Black Emperor as well. I couldn't pick just one artist or band, maybe from each genre of music. But that isn't the point of this thread.

yeah i was about to change it but, this is interesting the way it's going making people rank 1 over all other genres. i'll definitely make a separate thread later on when this one dies out about the best 1 in each of their favorite genres cause i have alot of other artist i feel are definitely the best in their own genre and need mentioning!

Thank you so much for remaining of Nujabes, how did he ever get off my playlist. Sad to hear he's dead.

To add to the the thread, Jon Schmidt deserve a mention for his innovative piano style.

For me, it has to be Devin Townsend. He has so much fucking talent it's disgusting, the things he can do with his voice and his guitar is nothing short of godly. Whatever sound you like, that man can put out. From heavy metal to kick back relaxing watching the scenery type of music, he does it all. I would like anyone who enjoys good music to please at least try out some Devy.

Not only is his music great, but his songs have very very deep meaning, that I'm sure a lot of you could relate to. Some of it is literally amazing...

His songs have literally changed my life in many ways as he's completely shown me a different perspective on how to view things.

One of the best things, is that he is a completely down to earth man.

I am going to post videos some videos displaying his talent

He also has a heavy metal banned "Strapping Young Lad" or SYL for short.

A very close second would be Eyedea & Abilities for me.

someone else posted this artist earlier but the first song was about crack in a girl's ass lol, none the less regarding of content, he has great flow. crisp and clear in delivery, reminds me of a explicit lupe that's a bit clearer.
