That said, I'll chime in with my favorite, though I wouldn't go calling them the best. Tool. Love tool got to see them live earlier this year absolutely amazing, Lateralus live is really something. For me thought it would have to be Australian prog rockers Karnivool. Seen these guys live multiple times and they never fail to disappoint, Drew's guitar is always tight and Kenny's Voice is always top notch!

if you could only choose 1 artist/band in the world you could listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be? I want to congratulate the OP on masterfully implementing the question about our favorite musician, because it encourages not only picking the artist whose one song or album we like, but really dive into the depths of the artist's discography. This thread has many good answers, so many great artists in here, I've actually spent the last hour just clicking random videos in the thread. I am going to suggest the chameleon, David Bowie. Remember, this is one artist for the rest of your life, that's a long time, hopefully. So I am going with a great artist that spans probably more genres and styles than most other artists, he has a huge collection of songs, so there's less risk of running dry than if picking a newer artist who simply doesn't have the same long history. Changes - Old school Glam Rock Heroes - a bit of an 80's song, but really just a great overall song. Rebel Rebel - an awesome rock and roll song. Golden Years - because disco is awesome too Let's dance - post disco, because bowie can. Little Wonder - Some industrial rock This could go on and on... Just to mention some ridiculously famous and good songs I've not linked Space Oddity The Man Who Sold The World Life On Mars Ashes To Ashes Hello Spaceboy Diamond Dogs Sorrow Ziggy Stardust Starman Oh! You Pretty Things Sound And Vision Song For Bob Dylan Under Pressure etc etc etc. And that's just his "hits". If you explore the depths of his albums you realize how much stuff is on them that is really, really good. Truly one of the musical geniuses of our times, I think David Bowie is a worthy contender for the most complete and interesting discography by one artist.

+ Show Spoiler [Elementary school] + Michael Jackson. Simple and easy rhythms, and simply great pop music. + Show Spoiler [age 13-14] + Enter the beginning of the angsty teen years, enter metal. Also started discovering techno, but Metallica were always my favorites at that age. + Show Spoiler [age 15-19] + Techno was nice and all, but then I discovered Simon "The Hallucinogenius" Posford. Finally someone who took electronic music to some place that moved me, body and mind. Beyond Hallucinogen for psytrance, his works as Shpongle, Celtic Cross and Younger Brother opened me to the wonderful world of non-mainstream electronic music. + Show Spoiler [age 20-24] + And at this point, I discovered the "out there" electronica. There is thinking outside the box, and then there is smashing it with baseball bats. Aphex Twin used a chainsaw. His music ranges from silly and slightly bonky to deep mental breakdowns... in what I consider some of the boldest music ever made, he is the first electronic musician to put his soul on a plate in the chilling "...I Care Because You Do". + Show Spoiler [age 25+] + After many years of my tastes wondering all over the place, I ended up with Dark Side of the Moon as my favorite album. Not a very original choice, sure. But it is the best album ever, in any genre, hands down, as far as I'm concerned. Edit: + Show Spoiler [Favorite all time piece of music] +

You'll probably know him for composing almost everything in Hayao Miyazaki's films, so I'll post some of his other works.

One could argue that someone with great songwriting skills is a great musician, even if their playing is shit. You could also argue that Yngwie Malmsteen is the undisputed best because he can shred like nobody's business, even though his writing is mostly your standard neo-classical metal fare. I'd guess the total package is most meaningful. As for how this thread is interpreted, note the OP says: "If you have to pick one band/artist to listen to for the rest of your life.." Of course that could somehow throw off the answer given as well - I love porcupine tree but if I listened to them non-stop I'd probably be clinically depressed by now. Now that I think about it, picking an artist/band instead of a song/piece seems backwards. That just seems to encourage fanboyism about one band/artist instead of it being about the music. There are quite a few songs that are absolutely brilliant, yet the rest of the artists work is utter shit or mediocre at best. lol if we are arguing "great songwriting skills" then it would be moronic to suggest anyone other than Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mahler, etc.

Now i think about it i need to add Kanye West. He got the time, the money and the artists to create a My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and he did deliver. The first chorus of the album made me jizz in my pants ![]()

We're not arguing songwriting or instrument playing skill, we're picking which artist's complete works we'd like to have with us stranded for life on a deserted island. It has nothing to do with ability, and everything to do with preference. It's the best way of presenting the question, but you're being an asshole and belittling people's opinions. Please stop it, you're not even arguing what the thread is a bout.
