Sadly, if some of our angry Eastern European friends would visit over on this end, they'd be bound to run into some of that at some point as well. But that's completely different. We just don't know. /facepalm

I don't understand why anyone from Romania, Bulgaria and so on stay in their countries if they are so plagued by some ethnic groups and corruption. Is it impossible to leave if you have a decent education? Just leave the lechers to leech from themselves. That would be an endearing sight. It would also be a better immigration to the west than we currently have.

Because some pepole don't just see their countries as a place to live and earn money, some pepole love their countries, their cultures, family and friends, the history of their pepole etc etc.

Dunno, about others, but there much more things different than money and work for which I`m attached to my country. Bulgarians live here for thousands of years and cant imagine myself leaving it, because of the gypsies.

afaik its already happening, many young people i know actually willing to leave... but its not so easy to leave behind the country you grown up, leaving all your family, friends etc... speaking only for myself here, but until hungary doesnt fall completely ill be here for the last minute trying to make it better... running away isnt a solution. and in other countrys you will be... well... threated like an immigrant. years have to pass until you climb up the ladder and will actually be seen equal to other countrys natives. at least this is the case with hungarians i spoke with coming home from the UK. maybe its sentiment but i will rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

Gypsies talking (in finnish) The newspaper: Satakunnan Kansa 2.9.2007
Rough translation: The woman thinks blending in society, going to school and work is threatening the whole gypsy culture. The gypsy guy on left suggested that and got a lot of hate from other gypsies.

However, when I came to YOUR country (the Netherlands), I realized that it is your government that is preventing me to work freely, makes me have a residence permit, etc. etc. Comeon, I am from the freaking EU, why should I go through all this as a guy from Spain, for example, doesn't have to go through such hassle only to be allowed to stay in the country and work?
I will tell you why: because there is some prejudice towards Bulgarians and Romanians even in the ever so tolerant Dutch. Because, contrary to what is believed in this topic, that Bulgarians/Romanians are racist towards their gypsy population, western European countries DEPORTED the gypsies they had and also deny free entrance/work of people from the countries from which the gypsies originate. How hypocritical is that?
We are the racist, but we allow them to work, we allow them to go to school, we give them social benefits, flats, free electricity, social integration programs and the such, while for us, who are rightful members of the EU, it is hard to even go to Holland and find a job there. Luckily for me, I finished my university education in the Netherlands and managed to easily find a job in programming, but some other people are not that lucky. AND THE SOLE REASON those restrictions apply is because of the ignorance of western governments who don't want to do anything with gypsies (yes, I said it), but fail to realize that Bulgarians/Romanians are not necessarily gypsies. The hypocrisy in this thread is overwhelming. If you deny, explain to me what is that:
http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/how-to-prepare/upon-arrival/residence-permit/ind-registration-for-eu-citizens/procedure-for-bulgarians-and-romanians
And this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11020429
Western countries are 10 times more racist than Bulgarians and Romanians who might say some harsh words toward their gypsies, might have tension with them but at least they LIVE with them, while western countries DEPORT them.
Pretty insulting.

As an American who is proud of my nation's long internal struggle against racism and intolerance, and one who is deeply skeptical of cultural explanations for people's behavior, I have the following questions.
How many people in this thread have actually been directly stolen from by a Romani person? What was stolen? When? How did you know they were Romani?
And I'm also curious, how many Romani people do you know personally?

It's a question of wether or not it's a lost cause yet, or not.

And I'm also curious, how many Romani people do you know personally? I have lived 18 years of my life in Bulgaria, in Plovdiv. I know many Romani people, let's say over 100. I have had my shoes stolen (while I was still in them) when I was young and my wallet in a bus. I have seen maybe 10+ times how old men and women are robbed by gypsies in buses or on the streets. I have seen their children beg on the street almost every day, trying to rob tourists in the main street. I have seen the places they live in.

You're right, it's bullshit. Western European Government's aren't blind, they know that any bad publicity from immigration is going to hurt them down the line. There is a large number of people who want to believe all immigrants want to steal benefits and if you give them any ammunition at all then they'll fuck you over in the next election. On the other side there are even more people who will give them shit if they say "no gypsies, everyone else is fine". The solution they've come up with is to ban Romanians and Bulgarians which is sufficiently broad that it doesn't look aimed at any one section of the population. You guys are collateral damage and it's shit.

if every of us had a direct problem with these people i guess they would have had their ass kicked long time ago, i mean, if they directly steal from everyone in the country, it wouldn't take long before people took actions, we aren't that tolerant either. but pretty much everyone knows someone in his family that did have a direct problem, for me, my uncle got his car almost stolen from one of these guys, how did he know ? well, people have eyes, when, some years ago. if you talk about less direct problems, pretty much every time there are these people somewhere and you stay long enough, there will be a problem with someone, just because starring at them is considered a lack of respect (why should we respect them anyway, they are useless for our society). i used to know 1 guy that moved to my village, his father got in jail and him and his mother tried to go away from him and these people and he was not supposed to find them because they were in danger, the kid had pretty much huge lack of social skills, looked like a model kid at times and complete scum at other times, you could tell his moral had been damaged already hopefully he isn't completly lost.

Being raised to be cautious and avoid bad areas and parks alone, I only lost about 2-3 bikes when i was young. I cant guarantee they were stolen by gypsies, I suspect they only stole 1 bike from me, the others... well who knows. I have been assaulted about 5+ times for being white however. I count to this even the smaller assaults, but 2 times I have been beaten up by a group of 6+ gypsies cause I was alone and they just can. They express their hatred and racism (calling us white swine etc.) loudly, without any repercussions. They even mock us, latest example would be I saw a guy who was obviously walking to work being shouted at from a window something like "yeah go and work so we can live our lives on your money haha"
However one thing that has not really been well established is that, besides what you may think from reading this thread, we rarely express our hatred towards them directly at them, we only speak this among friends and in anger because if we were to say the same thing they do openly, it would very likely have some consequences.
Bear in mind that here in Czech Republic gypsies are a very small minority, compared to the other countries we have nothing to complain about, but even in these numbers they have managed to turn everyone against them.

Its not hard to leave the country, bus tickets and even plane tickets are cheap, the problem is most of our studies here are not recognized by other countries, for example an account or lawyer here cant practice in other country cause they have a totally different system. This applies mostly to all high payed and high responsability jobs so most of the people who leave Romania or Bulgaria work as cleaners, sell at fast foods, construction and other kind of lol jobs, even if they have a good training in their home countries. So we would have to study again in the country we go and not everyone speaks and writes good other languages. Most of the good payed jobs that we can have in the west are in the healthcare system, but not all of us are medics and such.

ive been robbed 3 times. its easy to recognize them as they have dark skin color and speak with strong accent. all the 3 times i happened on the train. old trains was very dangerous at that time, but there was no other way to travel to school. now there is new trains which have camera in it with security guards, so at least public safety improved in the past years...
1, i had to trade my heaphones to a useless sim card. its hard to not agree with them it is a good trade when 6 of them standing around you with no other people in sight. 2, i was sitting next to the door, was just smashed in the head from behind and got my pockets emptied. i had 10$ and a half pack of cigarettes. 3, i was traveled in an empty car (the whole train was empty, it was pretty late) when a guy sitted front of me in a position where hes knees framed mine. first he said i give him my mp3 player as a gift. than he took out the sim card from my cellphone as a gift too (in case if i get off the train wont be able to call the police immediately). than he took out the card holder from my pockets, taking out the personal ID card and address certifiate and started to ask if i have a mother and a father, do i love them etc... you go figure.
id say the 3rd one was by far the most serious as the guy was clearly on some drug, huge black pupils, sweating, speaking incoherently sometimes... i learned to handle gypsys pretty well, to say the least most of them not really intelligent so its easy to make them leave satisfied with very little value been lost without suffering any harm, however with this guy it was very different. he was completely unpredictable and was impossible to tell what will happen in the next minute.
i know one family who lived a decent life despite selling amphetamine. i was a friend with their son until they moved. idk if they still selling it, they were building a house in an other town at that time.
i know at least 50-100 of them but not very well. they either "prominent figures" of the town, or used to came to the casino where few of my good friends used to work. they didnt made any trouble as it was clear for them they will face retaliation by the casino owner (who closely connected to the police). however it wasnt hard to figure out what theyre up to being there every day until dawn and coming back in early-afternoon, oftenly losing amount 5-6x time the minwage on one occasion. they also oftenly bragged about crimes they committed and such... it was easy for the casino however, to bleed them out of their money but they was definitely the more intelligent ones from their kind as they moved from small-time crime committing to big-time, hence the reason they got the amount they brought there. there was several rumours circulating by policeman who also was returning guests, which of them did what in the past (like a guy sitting in jail for 5 year killing an old woman upon a robbery and just been released), but i will not go into detail, as i dont have clear information on that...

I'm just gonna assume you're american ok ? You see when people have been in the same place for 2500 years (and not 230 years of history the way you have there) they kind of care about that land.

I'm not claiming western countries are less racist (I'm not from the NL). You have to understand that NL/Finland rejected Bulgaria/Romania from the Schengen Area just because of your difficulties with corruption/crime ethnic difficulties and what not. Free travel from your countries could have a negative impact on other Schengen countries. I'm not blaming you or anyone else who is not responsible for this, its just damage control and something you have to deal with (and apparently succeeded in).
I don't see the problem in deporting anyone as long as they are illegal settlers.

Around 800 000 young Bulgarians have emigrated to other countries since 1990. The current population of Bulgaria is around 6.5mil people. You were saying?
