Making the CGI cinematics for W3/SC2 takes months...years for a mere few minutes. To do a whole movie, they would need a full building's worth of animators and more specifically, machine-power to do all the rendering.
Remember how much computer power was used to render the animations of the transformers movies? It was a whole floor of computer power in god knows what building for a mere bunch of frames when optimus "transforms". It can be done but it's very resource-demading.
CGI experts, please correct me and enlighten us

The movie is live-action. It won't require the work of full CGI.

A movie, (or several) spanning Arthus' slow descent from spoiled prince to crazy undead madman would be fantastic. His relationship with Jaina, Uther, his father, going nuts and slaughtering that whole town, etc. There's a lot of potential for great storytelling there.
I hate what they did with WoW in general, (and even the latter half of wc3 honestly)
Orcs aren't evil, just misguided/possessed? What? LAME. They're ORCS. You know, smash everything, kill everyone, pillage everywhere, etc! And I'm almost scared this is what they're doing with the Zerg in sc2... T_T;
I'd also be thrilled with a movie set in WC1 or 2. Just humans vs orcs, fighting off a massive invasion or crossing over into the dark portal. Could be an awesome war movie.

Well, that was part of their lore way before WC3 though

My hope is that the movie tells a story post-wow and serves as a catalyst for warcraft 4. Fuck wow, give me a good steampunk/fantasy themed RTS.

Or rather WC3 is where they reinterpreted Orcs. WC2, they were still the evil Orcs that I much prefer. Honestly, I'd prefer a WC1 or WC2 movie. Especially because you could deal with the fall of Medivh, the (retcon) plottings of Guldan and probably use Sir Lothar as the main character. In any of the campaigns though, it would be difficult to portray the length of time and the number of battles. You'd have to find a story thread that would touch a couple key battles and imply the rest.

Warcraft lore died with WoW, I was really hopin' the movie would center around the first two wars, or maybe wc3 events..anything else will be really shifty ;o

yeah somewhere it was said that the WoW: Lich King trailer took 8 months to make. That's just 2 minutes. Imagine now 2 hours. 40 years? :D

I'd argue with that. The first original WoW has opened the lore even more. There were many amazing stories there: Onyxia at SW, Ancient Gods & Ragnaros, the Silithids. But after that one: yeah, it kinda got weird. Outland was ok but not great.
BTW: It was an official Blizzard statement that the movie is going to be covering events before wow. And wow was 10 years after the wc3. If I'd spend some time I'd find that official post by blizz, but I'm kinda lazy. Know that info is legit and there's gonna be no late-wow shinnanigans! Only early lol.

can anyone please explain to me how WoW ruined warcraft lore? O.o

Someone else can go into specifics if they want. The jist of it is, they retconned a lot of stuff in WoW. Their reasoning was that continuing the story was more important than canonical accuracy.

A film version of WC3, oh my god this will be glorious if done well.

Well besides completely fucking over the entire eredar race history, they've also killed off virtually every important villian from the earlier games.

Actually there was some talks for Raimi to direct a live action Warcraft movie a few years ago and it was supposed to come around this year. But the project died. If you check the 1st coment to that article it was made 4 years ago...
The movie is in development hell right now so there isn't any specific plans to release, no director, no plot, no cast and no release date.
edit - You should change the OP because the content is misleading.

actually it was the official blue-post by blizz and there was an interview with Sam Raimi, who said that he actually started playing wow after they have made a deal. He said that he had a couple of projects to take care of first and then the Warcraft project will begin. ( I guess he was talking about Spartacus and Possession)

I hate this thread, there is no news or anything related to make this thread worthy, we already have a Warcraft movie thread.
Some crappy link to a site that says 2011 is well, crap. It's not a viable source. Far as I know, the movie isn't scheduled for a while (3 years).

The lore is shaped around mmo gameplay. They make changes and new twists to fit whatever the game needs, instead of having the game tie into a story already fleshed out. I won't go into details, but it's pretty obvious.

This. Orcs in WC2 were badass, in wc3 and WoW they are just wussies....
And yeah Warcraft lore is officially dead. Still I really thought Gul'dan was so badass, my favorite char in the lore
