I have a question: During the primaries for both Democrats and Republicans why are some states restricted to enrolled members and others open to all? And what proportion are restricted vs open? Just wondering after reading that NH will be democrats, republicans and independants compared to Iowa.

Simply put, different states have different rules for how they do their primaries.

Without a Romney sweep or a win from another candidate, it seems Republicans haven't settled for Romney yet. At the same time, there aren't any more back-up candidates that can put up the money to make it through the other primaries without a convincing showing from Iowa. Maybe if Santorum had more money, or Paul had a decisive victory, things would be different, but it's not looking competitive in the long run.

Santorum?! That guys a complete non-factor in the long run.. The scrutiny he will receive over the next few weeks will be unprecedented, and for good reason (eek). Plus, after were out of the bible thumping midwest his little "family value" fringe experiment will be over.

pretty impressive for Ron Paul to end up with 21 % despite all the negative campaings against him. Romney is bad, but thank god Santorum didn't win lol.

Man im so jealous of how American actually takes notice and votes in Elections and takes note of goverment issues...England is so so different, you almost have to force people to vote and its crazy.

Presidential election in America is nearly or is as big news as OUR own general election is. I have heard about the Iowa vote for the past week on news stations in England its crazy. When i was in America and our OWN general election was on, it was on 0 news stations in America (was in florida at the time) and when we asked the Americans about our Election they just said we dont really know its going on or /care its going on (they werent being rude just honest)...Crazy really xD

So close in the votes aswell, be very interesting year of voting i think. Good luck America!

Does it even matter that Romney is 1st or Santorum in 2nd ? That should totally be considered a complete tie . Dunno why people are glad Santorum didn't win , as far as I'm conerned he is top1 along with Romney by official results .

Yet out of a state of 3 million people, only about 120.000 people participated in this particular primary. A higher percentage of Europeans (on average) vote in their general election then they do in America. I'm not so sure they're better off in the US.

Uhh... You seriously should read up about the american voting act/system. It's really horrible... You have to "register yourself" to vote? WTF?
You vote during a normal weekday? WTF?
These primaries atm are also basically not "true" elections, the media just blow them up like crazy.

I'm from Switzerland and we got ourself some extreme right wing politicians as well. But the lack of decency of some of this candidates and the extreme religiousness is kinda worrying. I sure hope people like Bachmann/Perry/Santorum won't reach such influence in our country..

Well I am from Canada, and it is interesting how the most mild mannered, least opinionated candidate won in Iowa. This is reflective of the mindset of Republicans in the US, they all think like Rick Santorum, but they know their party can not win with an extremist at the helm.

So they will probably elect mr. corporate interests with a kind smile, Mitt Romney.

Personally, I would LOVE to see Ron Paul win the presidential election because of his no non sense approach to the questions people ask him.
