I'm 99% sure it's not carpal tunnel as I've been playing nearly every day for 2 years on the same desk, same posture, same keyboard position, etc.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Try and be concious of where your wrist is wresting when playing, might be on the edge of your desk or something.

Last week the arm rest on my chair fell off and I haven't put it back on as I don't have the tools to re-attach it. The arm rest raises my elbow by about 2-3 inches which could make the difference. I'll re-attach it and see if the problem goes away.

You are compressing your ulnar nerve. Which innervates the finger distribution you are referring to This commonly occurs at the elbow or near the wrist. Somehow you need to readjust, use a pad, etc... to avoid compressing your nerve in this way.

http://www.ehow.com/how_5199086_relieve-fingers-left-hand-right.html had an issue before with half of my hand falling asleep and becoming numb, turns out there was some compression on my ulnar nerve, that i got from playing a ton, while putting pressure on a certain area of my arm (just resting my arm).

I think because my arm rest wasn't on the chair, I was resting that exact part of my arm on the metal of the chair. I just reattached the arm rest, so the nerve shouldn't be pinched anymore if that was indeed the problem. I'll try those exercises also to see if it helps.

Edit: However, it does usually affect the thumb-side of the hand rather than the pinky side.

This is most likely the reason. The "sleeping" sensation is almost always because of pressure on a nerve. A few spots to be careful of are just above the tip of your elbow (towards your shoulder) and the side of your wrist where the tendons can be seen. Edit: and yes, there are other more serious possibilities, but this is by far the likeliest and the easiest to rule out.

This highlights where my hand is numb.(Ulnar nerve) ![]() The highlighted area below would be from carpal tunnel. ![]()

There is no pain whatsoever but it is extremely annoying and makes my play much slower. Only my middle finger, ring finger and pinkie and the side of my hand is falling asleep. Thumb, index finger and the rest of my hand is fine. I'm 99% sure it's not carpal tunnel as I've been playing nearly every day for 2 years on the same desk, same posture, same keyboard position, etc. Has this happened to anyone else? Sounds like you got cubital tunnel syndrome, I get that sometimes. Unlike carpal tunnel syndrome which is accompanied by tingling in the thumb, index, middle finger and part of the ring finger, cubital tunnel syndrome is accompanied by tingling in the ring and pinky finger, and the side of the hand closest to your pinky finger. Cubital tunnel syndrome happens when the ulnar nerve is pinched by the cubital tunnel, which is located by your elbows. This can happen for many reasons. Leaning a lot on your elbows can do it. Banging your elbow on a hard surface. Bending your elbow a lot. Sleeping with your arms bent, they should be straight. Earlier this year I accidentally banged both of my elbows at work, and for the next month I suffered so much pain in my hands. Things like playing Starcraft 2 and driving became extremely painful. I began sleeping with my arms straight and the pain and numbness started subsiding and eventually my hands were back to normal. And that wasn't the first time that happened to me. When I was younger I hit my elbows on my headboard while waking up, and for about a month I wasn't able to play video games. So my advice is to not lean on your elbows and try to keep your arms straight while sleeping.
