You definitely dont want to bend with your nails, but imo that's a fine exercise for a beginner. I always do that bend with my ring finger though.

Well there's pros and cons.

The good thing about using the ring finger (like most people normally do) is that you can fret the e string with your pinky, so you can play stuff like (i hope this makes sense)

e|-----------8---------8---------------
b|---8b10----8b10----10r8--5----

The good thing about using the pinky is that you can use more fingers to help you if you aren't strong enough to do it with just a couple

yeah i just tried it your way and it makes just as much sense. that guy in the video either has rock hard pinkie or super light strings :D tnx buddy

acutally i dont know if i'd use my pinkie to fret that 8 e , you can use your ring finger just as well after the bend? but something to think about

The idea is that you keep the bent note in place while you play another note on top of it (it's super common in rock and blues), so you either use ring/pinky or middle/ring

what would you suggest i "learn" next?

am i supposed to take some popular chords like C Major (and like 30 more??) and learn them and the exact scale behind them?

like learning the (full fretboard) pattern for the pentatonic scale but for each popular chord?

Well the pentatonic boxes are the same for every key, you just move them about. If you are comfortable with a minor then yeah, move them around and learn the different keys well.

I'd also recommend learning to play the major pentatonic scale (same patterns, different notes you want to accent basically).

There are many different ways to keep learning, but I'd say there are two important next steps for note knowledge.

Notice that there are really only 2 ways to play the pentatonic pattern. (if you don't count the semitone shift for the b string). Notice how to apply that pentatonic pattern anywhere on the neck using the same key, say A for minor pentatonic or C for major pentatonic. It's crazy once you see it but all those weird shapes are really just one of two options repeating all over the neck.

This part I put second because it's worth doing, but you should spend more time on songs and chords and melodies over this. Memorize all the different shapes for the pentatonic scales. (major or minor is fine, they're actually the same notes just with different emphasis like Teotia said. It is useful to have them both down.) This takes a long time and make sure you practice them correctly every time! Don't spend all your time doing this, just work on one for a few minutes when you start to practice then go to another.

-

It's good to keep learning mechanics and scales, but never underestimate the importance of learning songs. Having a good vocabulary of melodies and chord movements will serve you very well. You can always analyze these melodies if you want to get into fretboard stuff or music theory.

You can always try to play the melody in another place on the fretboard.

in nihils video below he makes the stretch at the low end of the common pentatonic pattern without having to lift his fingers off to make the stretch. this is totally impossible for me unless i sit down and acrobat the guitar (i play standing up).

is this something i should try to work on over the next few years or do a lot of people not make the stretch and instead get fast without it?

tnx

Eventually your fingers can stretch and cover more frets, it just comes with time.

it seems like something that wont happen unless i train it (very very gradually over years) so i was kinda asking if i should be bothering to do that. because theres literally no point me trying to make that stretch in normal practice coz im nowhere near it. so im just seeing what people say in general about it

thanks

btw i got Amplitube working and holy shit it sounds incredible i cudnt believe it

i cant get Reaper to output my guitar sound as i play it tho , tried everything, waiting for them to enable my posting at the forum to get help :@ if i can get it working ill post a vid

this is what im looking at with spazzing 4th finger from stretching

Well you can play that note on the A string if you can't hit it on the lower E, lots of famous people do that

I've moved into a small bedroom and I don't have room for my large amp. I've been playing around with guitar rig pro and I'm pretty much sold on using it instead of my amp.

I'm looking for a usb interface that is small and cheap. I want it to have headphone out as well as line out. Obviously it needs a guitar in. Ideally it would work on mac and pc well without annoying driver issues when I'm not using it.

I was looking at this Peavy XPORT. Any other success stories or suggestions?

I use a Scarlett Solo and it's pretty nice. More expensive than the xport I guess.

I originally got it as a better dac/amp that had an input option in case I wanted to record anything, as I've done electronic production as a hobby for a while but never really recorded anything. For that purpose it sounds way better than the like audiophile-recommended stuff I tried before. My dad had an electric guitar back in a closet but I never tried it as there was no amp, but since I got the interface I've been playing it through there and it seems to work well and sounds fine to my ears. But I didn't shop specifically for that purpose and I've never played an electric otherwise so I don't know how it compares to a guitar amp or any other interfaces.

I have had some bluescreen crashes that seem to be related to the drivers as well on win7, but no real annoying driver issues once I got it installed. I think I had to install it twice for it to work.
all's fair in love and melodies
