Surprised there wasn't a thread for his death. I'm sad he's gone, he had a long life and left a mark on the world few could even dream of. RIP BB King

So what exactly does a barebones metal sound consist of?

My (tube) amp only does distortion, so which pedals should I be looking at?

Metal is pretty straightforward to get a good sound for. Basically I'd recommend just looking into getting a good distortion pedal if your amp doesn't have adequate distortion, a chorus pedal for cleans and some lead parts, a wah pedal or whammy pedal depending on what style of metal you play, and maybe a compression/noise filter pedal depending on how bad the feedback is when you're playing.

That's basically it. You don't even really need all that stuff though. It also never hurts to have a reverb and delay pedal since there are a lot of songs that use those effects, but they're not that common in modern metal. Depending on your preferred metal sub-genre, you may find some effects are more useful than others.

Definitely look into getting a Tube Screamer if you like crunchy tone. I personally just use a DI Pod interface and get pretty solid tones with enough tweaking and post prod EQ. If you have money to spend and want to play stuff live you can't go wrong with an AxeFx. A lot of purists aren't fans of the whole processing side of guitar work these days but if you want to duplicate the tone of your recordings then DI is the only way to go.

Before investing in any pedals though see what you can get out of your EQ knobs. You'd be surprised just how much tone you can get with the right amount of scooping and boosting to certain frequencies.

Also for the love of everything that's awesome and nerdy in the universe do NOT scoop your mids to nothing. I find that tone to be incredibly boring and overdone, and your sound will completely disappear once you start playing in a band anyway. Imo it's much better to have a more crunchy, midrange-y sound (which is where a pedal like a tubescreamer comes in handy actually).

http://pickroar.com/1003/the-tone-stack-explained-in-english-for-humans/

don't scoop your mids without understanding what it actually does.

the knobs are not just volume controls for that particular frequency band. This article explains it fairly well.

Pretty basic stuff but this video actually helped me immensely. It can be helpful to get back to basics once in a while.

I perceive this thread more of an instrument appreciation thread, and so here I am posting my "rig".

Besides, a violin is much sexier than a guitar, at least for me (/jump into flame repellent suit )

There are many pieces to showcase the luscious yet powerful tone of a violin, such as this one by Sarasate:

Carmen Fantasia is amazing and that is an amazing performance

I love the violin (more than the guitar)
But why would you post it here
Clearly labeled Guitar Thread :V

Maybe you can start your own Violin thread instead~

Also it's really hard to practice 2 instruments, I've been practicing violin a lot more, and been neglecting my poor guitar
It just seems hard to find time to do both :/

Also is there like any practice regiment I could do for guitar?

Like when I practice violin, I start off with scales and etudes, then work on pieces
With guitar I usually just practice tabs
I guess there is scale exercises I should work on huh

@JSH
Yeah about the thread...well it seems rather difficult these days to find guys who interested in traditional instruments, thus I put posted a pic of my violin in here. Also, I think the little troll in me wanted some TL members to check out some violin instead of guitar, but you are right that I should post something guitar related, so I hope you guys enjoy this one:

As for practicing, I don't know much about guitar works, but I would think it should be relatively easy to find suitable books to learn scales&fingering, etudes, and then even "normal" melodic pieces with progression in difficulty. Naturally, this implies that you train yourself in classical guitar pieces (at least at start) to make sure you develop a good dextrerity and agility in those fingers.

Idk how many people in here have done this, but does anyone know about travelling with a guitar? I'm going abroad to Granada, Spain for a semester and I don't wanna be away from my guitars for that long (as in probably no guitar playing without them). When I was studying in Buenos Aires I was only there for a month, but the itch was super strong and I had no place to rent or even try any quality guitars out (they had some shitty off-brand guitars in random shops that sold clothing as a prop. Any ideas? I could bring my own guitar, but my rents aren't so hot on that idea.
User was warned for too many mimes.

You can easily do something like that with guitar. For example, start off with playing chromatic scales up and down the strings, then moving up one step (so, for example, 1-2-3-4 on the low e string, then the a string, and so on, then when you get to the high e string move to 2-3-4-5, get back up, start over); you can also alter your fingering to play 4-3-2-1, using legato, etc. Then practice some scale or arpeggio you already know, or you want to improve on, in different positions, then start playing licks, solos or songs. That's a pretty good way to warm up before practicing actual music.

I brought my Gibson SG, which i bought in the US, back to Europe in 2008; they just let me carry on the hard case on the plane thankfully. I would 100% check with the company you're going to be flying with if they let you do that though, if you can't i'd even consider buying a second ticket over letting anyone else handle one of my guitars.

If you don't want to annoy anyone where you will live you can just buy a tiny 1-5 watt amp, or even an amp with a headphone output like a Blackstar; i recently got one of those tiny Marshalls because i'm spending most of my days working at an observatory and i figured bringing an 80-watt Marshall might have been a touch overkill >.>

I know what you're talking about with the itch to play. A few years ago i travelled in India for 6 weeks with a friend after graduating high school, and i ended up buying a tiny mini-guitar (it's about as big as a ukulele, but it's tuned to standard and has 6 strings) for like 40 euros because i just missed playing too much. It's kind of a piece of shit instrument, but it really saved me :D
