I've had a fender acoustic electric for a few months but finally started practicing religiously two weeks ago. Have armour pads on my fingers now so playing comes down to practice and strength. I'm having such a blast. Really need to work on plucking individual strings, though. Chords I've got down within a song if I practice it for a few hours, but calling out a chord and getting my fingers there fast needs work, too.

It takes quite a bit of time, but once you get the muscle memory down you really just start excelling and new chords become beyond easy to learn. Keep up with playing!

I've been playing for 16 years now. I started with rock and blues, moved to metal (Pantera!) and jazz in college. I was in an indie rock band for about 2 years up till about a year and a half ago. Now I pretty much only play acoustic, in support of songwriting. Actually, I probably shouldn't even be posting in this thread as it seems to be directed toward the louder stuff.
Make more anything.

I actually like playing acoustic way more than electric. Sounds more pure to me, even though it's harder to sound clean.

Even those that play the louder stuff probably(if they don't, they should!) dabble in the acoustic stuff as well. Playing acoustic guitar to even just learn your chords/scales makes it so so much easier to play electric!

I didn't get my first acoustic till i had played electric for 8 months(ive now played 10.5 months) and lately i play it more than my electrics, it really exposed how weak my fingers were haha so much fun getting through a new pain hurdle.

I own an Epiphone Sheraton II (an ES-335 based model). I played Dot's and Casino's, but this one stood out in sound and handling. I'm taking lessons to learn the jazz basics, and this Epi (hooked up to a Fender SuperChampXD) is amazing for that.

I also own a Taylor Big Baby acoustic. Every time I play it I'm amazed by the amount of sound that comes from such a slender guitar. Martin may be the better acoustic brand overall, but I'm a Taylor fan for life

And while I'm at it, let me sneak this one in:

If you ever have the chance to pick up a cheap banjo, by all means do! Its simplicity really changed my perception of music. I don't play it a lot these days, but it's mindless fun

I can't believe that many people like Taylor's over Martins... The Martin is a much better guitar, in my opinion, but between the big 3 acoustics it comes down to what sound you prefer. Taylor's are Bright. Martin's are full. Gibson's are deep. Generally speaking or course.

Five people is hardly an accurate statistical sample - but it is interesting to note that Taylors outsold Martins last year in the US. IMO Martins sound too country for my liking - perfect for bluegrass players but who the hell plays bluegrass unless they're over 50 these days. To me a Taylor meets the bright end and the bass player can meet the low end. With a Martin you've got no treble if you want it in a song.

I'm actually more surprised at the number of people who prefer Gibson over Fender... I don't agree with everything Ed Roman wrote, in fact I probably disagree with most of his writings, but this piece is definitely accurate:

I play bluegrass and I'm 25...

I'm not surprised that Taylors sold more last year. But being popular doesn't mean better. Taylors are much better for girls and the bright tone makes average players sound better than they are.

My favorite acoustic is my Gibson SJ-200 and I believe that Gibson acoustics are some of the best sounding instruments in the world and they would sell like crazy if they made one that was less than $2,000.

Updated setup:

Picked up some new gear over the last while; Been playing around with a trey anastasio and zappa inspired stuff recently (working mostly on improv though)

guitars:
fender custom shop strat (I can't remember the exact model )
yamaha fg 150 red label ('69)

amp/cabs:
Mesa/Boogie Mark III blue stripe
Bugera 212v-bk (I spent all my money on the blue stripe and leslie )
Leslie 145 (from 1969, I managed to pick this up for only ~500 cause the guy thought the amp was broken [it wasn't])

effects/pedals:
1983 ibanez ts-9 (I managed to pick this up for ~60 on craigslist, the guy had no idea what he had :D)
early 90s dunlop crybaby
Boss sd-1 that I modded with the 808 mod (not mine, but here is mod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pwNQ2qmEgA)
Boss ch1
Boss RC20xl

I'm not surprised that Gibsons sold the third most last year. But being third most popular doesn't mean better. Gibsons are much better for grandpas and the [x] tone makes elderly players sound better than they are.
