From http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/01/25/yo-quiero-isolated-oat-product/
Where's the beef? According to a class action lawsuit filed by the Beasley Allen law firm out of Montgomery, Alabama, it's certainly not in Taco Bell's "taco meat filling."
The "seasoned ground beef" contains less than 35 percent beef - the other 65 percent of the meat-like mixture is: water, isolated oat product, salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, oats (wheat), soy lecithin, sugar, spices, maltodextrin, soybean oil (anti-dusting agent), garlic powder, autolyzed yeast extract, citric acid, caramel color, cocoa powder (processed with alkali), silicon dioxide (anti-caking agent), natural flavors, yeast, modified corn starch, natural smoke flavor, salt, sodium phosphate, less than 2% of beef broth, potassium phosphate and potassium lactate.
Whew, did you get all that? Oh, there's also caramel color and natural smoke flavor added.
Taco bell was my favorite fast food and the beef grilled stuff burrito is amazing. I think I will only be getting chicken products from them now as the lawsuit contends that the chicken and carne asada have been tested and are what they are claimed to be.
No wonder their meat tastes so good though, it's all salty and sugary.

What do you have against oats?
|
its tilting how companies always find ways to sell u less meat. Like its common practice to fill chicken with salt and flood it with water so u pay water at meat prize. Just gotta nitpick ur meat better I guess.
|
Nobody who has eaten Taco Bell's beef thinks that it's real beef. I mean come on, it's the grossest thing on the menu by a landslide.
Bean Burritos all the way.

I just hope carl's jr is like that because I seriously love the beef there more than any other place. I'm going to look into it.

Some of the articles have really cleaver titles "Taco Bell Accused of Not 'Meat'ing Standards." "Lawsuit Claims That Taco Bell's Meat Is Indeed a Mystery" "Taco Bell 'beef': mostly not beef"

Is that a problem? I mean, when I make tacos they aren't 100% beef, they're probably 90% beef and 10% filler. I realize the ratio is off here, but the top ingredients are still food. Oats, water, chili, tomato, garlic, etc.
I don't eat there often, but I guess I just don't see the issue.

In unrelated news, the USDA requires beef taco filling to be at least 40% meat to satisfy requirements.

hmm... yeah i never expected the beef to be truly mostly beef. i mean i still ate it because it tasted good, but i didn't expect it to be all beef. if i want cheap nasty but tasty fast mexican food, ill get my taco bell. if i want real stuff, ill go elsewhere or make it myself.
but at least it's confirmed.

I fully expect a product labeled "beef" to be at least like 51% beef.

A guy about ten years ago who worked at Taco Bell told me the boxes of beef actually said "Beef flavored oat product" or something on them. But I was never able to verify this and thought he was making stuff up. Guess not.
Does it really matter, though? Did you really eat Taco Bell because you thought you were getting beef or did you eat it because it tasted fairly good and is dirt cheap? Surely you're not upset that the quality of Taco Bell product isn't quite what you thought it was.

Its the fact that many stupid assumptions like this are so common that is the cause for so many lawyers and silly class-action lawsuits like this one in the US

Well I think the lawsuit is kinda pointless, but I think it might force taco bell to put up a little asterik that says "beef contains XX% beef product. More details upon request" on their menu and commercials somewhere.

No, I did think that what I was getting was at least like 80% beef though. I do understand why their prices are so cheap now. I will still go there probably, but will get my chicken burrito instead, even though that grilled stuff burrito is truly amazing.

oddly enough this makes me feel slightly healthier about eating at Taco Bell.

This is why you shouldn't eat Americanized fake ethnic food. With few exceptions, it's usually gross. I liked that comment about the little chihuahua, though.

They should eliminate the beef altogether and sell them as vegetarian.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm laughing out loud at the OP for saying he's going to eat the product with the most meat, as if oats are some how horrible to be eating (when you couldn't even tell before).

Its an issue of false advertising I believe, personally I also don't eat Taco Bell very often, and when I do I knew along time ago the beef wasn't 100% beef. Basically all fast food places use some kind of filler in their meats, and as far as fillers go the one Taco Bell is using is actually not horrendous for ones health unlike some of the other ones. So as I already stated I think the lawsuits are because people are being told they get 100% beef and they aren't (but I haven't seen '100% Beef' on a sign at a Taco Bell), and has little to do with health issues as a result of the beef.
|
The actual "beef" is probably the nastiest bits of the cow that they can scrounge up anyways.
|
Starfries is right Taco bell uses grade D beef Grade E is whats in dog food
So its the cheapest beef they can legally sell you, and its only 35% of what it could be.

I'm with Chill here. I mean, when I eat Chef Boyardee, I fully expect it to be anything but beef. If you're already a Taco Bell eater, this shouldn't change anything for you. Did you really think you were paying 69cents for a taco with 80% beef in it? I suppose it is a little sketchy from a legal standpoint though.
|
Who cares, it still tastes good. I will definitely continue to eat Taco Bell as it is delicious!
|
I sort of mimic Chill's impression that it's all still food anyway, so I'm cool with it if it's true. Mainly because Taco Bell tacos are my favorite food to eat at anytime, and they're pretty damn cheap.
Also it looks like Taco Bell is challenging the lawsuit, rejecting the claims. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110125/ap_on_bi_ge/us_taco_bell_lawsuit
I suppose it'll be interesting to follow, but I'm definitely going to continue eating at Taco Bell regardless. In fact, I think I might go down the street for a late night snack before the GSL starts. :D
Edit: The lawyer suing apparently has never even eaten at Taco Bell, or so he told a CNN reporter while she was on the phone with him. (eating a taco from Taco Bell at the same time lol!)

Yeah pretty much all processed foods in North America are buffered with genetically modified "Roundup-Ready" zombie soy. Just read the ingredients label on anything in your local grocery store; everything has soy. If it doesn't say "organic" its most certainly GMO. Best to avoid it, buy organic.

Also, the extra stuff is pretty much what they put in Boca burgers. But the main ingredients are still beef and water. And the USDA regs are irrelevant; those are regulations for butchers, not for prepared restaurant food. Obviously you don't want your raw ground beef to have added water (per USDA regs), but it's kind of a necessity when making taco meat. Stupid lawsuit is stupid.

Honestly the beef consists of maybe 30% of the entire taco or less. They really skimp on it to maximize profits. It tastes good, is made of food, and isn't going to kill you if you have 1-2 tacos.
Chipotle is way overpriced IMO. Again the meat is 30-40% of the taco/burrito what have you. They put rice in their food to fill you up to make you think you got your money's worth.

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Taco Bell. I was really hungry the first time I ever ate there and the food tasted fantastic which set a high expectation that the restaurant has never been able to fulfill on subsequent visits. Some menu items are good, some are really bad. I guess you can't argue that it isn't cheap. I eat there every now and then.

I hate chipotle for the fact that its not gourmet food enough like other mexican restaurants yet the price isn't fast food price either. Its the worst combination of both.
