I'm trying to learn some German but I forget the words easily because I almost never use it.
Please post some good music in German. It can be sung by anyone, of any genre from metal to traditional folk to soul. Preferably not club-pop. Also, It doesn't have to be slow. Most importantly, please post music you like so that I'll enjoy it and keep listening!
The only one I know of so far is Rammstein with something about snow white and the 7 dwarfs in the music video, forgot the title.
Edit:
What I don't want is club-pop which is the top10 hits like Baby Baby or Akon's new stuff or Black Eyed Peas new stuff. It's not exactly what we would call pop a few years ago. Pop in general bores me but I still like a few so please keep posting what you enjoy!
I'd prefer a good song that I don't understand at all over one that I don't enjoy.
Generally what I like is something with musical content. I don't know how else to explain it but repeating a phrase 20 times in 3 minutes (like in club-pop) with autotune is NOT content. Just like 4 pooling every game. But don't worry about it too much. Please post what you enjoy if it isn't club-pop.
Does anyone know any of and bands that do "House MD-ey" music? The slow rock/soul type.
(electro) oliver koletzki has some songs with german text..., same for jeans team...
(Hip-hop/rap) i hate most of it but understandable and good german from: fantastische vier, blumentopf, schnabel, deichkind (they are pretty sarcastic), absolute beginner
(folk) if you get drunk in german speaking countries, you should know some udo jürgens (especially "griechischer wein") :D
that's about all that comes to my mind now, there is a lot more, but i most of the time hate german lyrics because it is mostly just bad written lyrics...
basically you can listen to anything from Reinhardt Mey. He speaks a clear and easy to understand german with only a few things that are hard to understand for foreigners.
When you want to learn more about german rythm, rhymes and metaphors then you should listen to Bodo Wartke and Max Raabe
Oh god what are people gonna think looking at this thread T_T
Most of the German music I listen to has English lyrics so I dont know any good German music except for the really successful acts. These are some good songs though
And once we have taken the steps of mainstream music, you might look out for some german metal/folk metal bands like "Subway to Sally", "Die apokalyptischen Reiter" or "Abrogation", because they obviously use some different kind of (sophisticated) vocabulary, or on the Punk Rock side "Die Toten Hosen"
Well, if u want to, you can hang around on my ts3 if you need a injection german :D, we talk about alot of stuff (in german), not only game related - just pm if your r interested in
Or just listen to one of the millions songs of "Die Ärzte", they should be perfect for your purpose. They have pretty much the most diverse lyrics(and on top of that they are even good :p) from any German band and have many nice songs. They are a mix of Punk/Rock/Pop.
if you like rock/punk hear "die ärzte" there were already some songs from them.
if you prefer hip hop, try "dendemann" he is on of the few good german hip hop artists, but not really popular. as a non nativ speaker his lyrics may be hard to understand, because of the intelectual requirement. his style is sometimes pretty funny, like in this video:
Please analyze the song that Meantime posted and tell me what he had, I never really understood. Also, all the stuff from Erhardt is pretty funny, but he is more of a comedian.
I know music is always a matter of taste, but this song makes me ashamed to have "Germany" standing next to my nickname. Seriously, this is pathetic :/.
Something totally unrelated: And One - Strafbomber.
Sport freunde stiller '54, '74, '90, 2006. Awesome German song, i heard it the first time in 2006 during WM ofcourse when i was dirving through Germany to Austria. Nice song i love Germans
Nice to see a lot of the "Hamburger Schule" in here. Hamburg best german city for Hip Hop and Alternative/Indie music. Great fan of Grand Hotel van Cleef and their artists. Let's see if this thread lives on, so far it's mostly germans posting.
It represents our culture very well: meaningful lyrics, well-composed melody and rhythm, and it offers a very critical view about an important everyday topic of life, not only here in Germany.
I know music is always a matter of taste, but this song makes me ashamed to have "Germany" standing next to my nickname. Seriously, this is pathetic :/.

I hope this isn't anybody's taste (certainly not mine! - maybe other people like it?), but harshly disliking it is just a patehtic way of profiling oneself

this song is quite bad for representing German music. It's a Naziband. I am pretty ashamed for my fellowcitizens that listen to that kind of music. I hope that this video will get removed.
If you're looking for some hip hop, I strongly recommend to check out "Die fantastischen Vier" aka Fanta, "Fettes Brot", and of course, above all, "Seeed". Last one highly recommended. And yes, it's 3 e's.
Rap exactly ain't my thing, but if you wanna get a glimpse of what is listened to (aka if you're not disgusted by mainstream bullshit, cause you just wanna learn German) go listen to "Bushido" or "Sido". I recommend the latter, don't rly like both tho.
Rock is problematic, cause we had one great band which seems to be afk since quite a long time, all the members doing solo projects or just spending the money they made. Beautiful and hilarious songwriting, extremely catchy, you might strongly identify with the lyrics if you are under 20. I'm talking about "Die Ärzte" of course (don't miss the 2 dots on top of the A, if you don't have them on your keyboard, copy it from here). You can rly listen to anything by them.
The first band I think is funny (knorkator, though Kinderlied is a little different than their usual), and the second genuinely good (Blumfeld). I didn't see music from either of them posted so here goes.
I'm also a student of German, and I'd recommend Blumfeld as a good band for listening experience. They generally speak pretty clearly and the lyrics are more interesting than "DU. DU HAST... etc"
As everyone posts youtube videos, I just post some bands ..
Die Ärzte (german) Die Akokalyptischen Reiter (german and english songs) Knorkator (german) Falco (english and german) Ton, Steine, Scherben (german) In Extremo (german, english, latin, old high german)
There should be a restriction of 1-2 suggestions per poster/post to maintain diversity and clarity, but unfortunately it's all clocked up already, so it's probably too late.
I am not sure if music really is helpful. In my opinion german only works somewhat good in music, but most of the time you have to sing text in a totally different way. This is one of the reasons why most lyrics are so awful. I would recommend literatur, but of course the really interesting stuff is also very difficult.
Music works fine. You'll find many people wanting to learn german mainly because of music they like if you've been around last.fm for long enough. I highly doubt that the majority of suggestions in this thread is music those people actually like to listen to as was asked in the OP. Too many people just post something they think of as "possibly helpful", while others in turn just clock the thread up with stuff... when we should be looking for enjoyable music to keep a person engaged and listening, and for some diversity so that there are higher chances of getting something the OP likes.
This thread looks to be the opposite of exemplary to me tbh, but maybe it's just me.

Oh, wow. Did you even listen to the song? You certainly didn't understand the meaning.
The singer isn't even german, by the way, he's iranian iirc. And One like provocation, but they're certainly not a nazi band. Do some research.

I did, other songs of this band like this one
are clearly not only to provocate.
I've been listening to And One for years, I've seen them live several times. Trust me, they are very, very far from being nazi or even right-wing oriented (just as I am - so don't worry, I'm not voting NPD). Their fanbase is overwhelmingly politically neutral or left-ish (industrial/gothic scene).
There are so many interviews with Steve (the singer) were he's asked about the more controversial songs and he's either bothered by the thousandth time he's questioned about his political orientation, or he just laughs at it. There's another side to national pride than just skinheads and nazis, please realize that - and that's just what that song plays with.
You say it's "clearly" not to provocate; I ask you where you take the certainty from to say it's "clear". It's not. Feel free to visit And One at one of their live shows, have a chat with Steve (I did) and you'll see that your interpretation is wrong.

Yes okay, they are not a Naziband, but you have to agree that "Steine sind Steine" doesn't sound like that.
And my german statement was a quote, I had no time to translate it. Sorry.

They have been mentioned several times already but... Die Ärzte. Their music is amazing, especially if you understand the lyrics - it may take some effort if you aren't fluent in German, but it's so worth it.
Also, Farin Urlaub. A friend of mine showed me his "Dusche" several years ago... I'm hooked for good.

I think the problem is that most of us (Germans) also listen to english bands. And the OP wasnt very specific what kind of music he likes (I also do have problems with categorizing songs into genres^^).
funny, if the music posted here is the average German music the ppl listen to, then i know why i don't listen to German music at all. (except for some electronic music with no or English lyrics)
the only German singer I could recommend is Reinald Grebe, because he is funny as hell.

I don't listen to this. In fact at first I hated this song/dude, but after a while I realized he is trolling. Thats why I kinda like him (but still don't listen to him, alot of people do though).
Bump! And updated OP with some explanations about my taste.
Some of them were a bit disco-like or pop like as in too radio friendly, which weren't to my liking but it's ok (as in I don't hate it) because sometimes I like several songs of that genre, but generally, not really.
I appreciate everybody's efforts to post. So far what stands out to me is Knorkator and Udo Jürgen. I really like those.
I'd really like to contribute to something but the closest I have is an Austrian band who does really folky and eccentric (I would think) stuff whose better stuff aren't in German although they do have several ones in German.
OP please read this if youre serious about the topic. people dont understand you want to learn a language. you need bands that actually mastered the language and speak it out as it is supposed to be!!! makes sense - you dont listen to 50cent if you want to learn english, right?
first is Blumfeld he sings very slowly and understandable. no accent and no slang. if you can bare with the music, which is not easy at first, this is perfect. also this is the root of alternitive german music. a bit of culture is always good
also i recommend Tocotronic. they build very strong on blumfeld. the earlier stuff may be a bit hard to understand but this for example is perfect:
this is proper german. most oft this thread is not. either listen to bands like those mentioned above or let it be and watch german movies. seriously.

Later he turns around and the sign says "schnauze". What does it mean here?
Schnauze = Snout Here it is used as an abbreviation to "Halt deine Schnauze (geschlossen)" which is "Keep you Snout shut". Imho an appropriate translation would be "Shut your hole(s)".
The side your showing means applause, and the other side means the same as when you tell someone "Shut", after already having having told them to be quiet.
Also, Keep it coming guys, this is a great thread for me to rediscover meine Heimatmusik. Its been like 6 years since I was there.
Die Ärzte (so far) has quite a common sound (to me) but this particular video with the lyrics stood out to me (although the grammar is confusing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDwRR4xtnGo
What do you find confusing about the grammar? There is also a chinese version of this song out there :D
"Guck Dieter an" would be said if you would like stand near Dieter and you should watch Dieter right now. But if he is not present not saying "dir den" would be weird. I guess people would get the meaning, but it just wouldn't sound right.
The verb is färben, which means to dye. German grammar is confusing and often times lacks logic, but I think music is helping alot. :D
On February 25 2011 09:31 Rflcrx wrote: What do you find confusing about the grammar? There is also a chinese version of this song out there :D
Ah it's the German grammar I found confusing. "Guck dir den Dieter an" Why "dir" and "den"? I would expect "Guck Dieter an"
"Musst du die denn färben?" Is the verb denn färben? I don't understand this too.
the article here is used to soften the language. " Guck Dieter an" is basically an order and hardly used in a conversation between parent and child. So when you say " guck dir den Dieter an" you soften the language. But those are smal details that are hard to get when you are not a native german. So you dont have to worry when you say " guck dieter an" as a foreigner.
" Musst du die denn färben"
färben is the verb meaning to dye the "denn" comes because it's a question.
basically it's an attempt at forcing a "no" answer from the person you ask that question. "Denn" always indicates that the person asking is not agreeing with what he sees.

Also, "dir den" (or something similar in other circumstances) is used to emphazise something "considerable" about this person.
In this song "dir den" means that Dieter is a positive example and the other one should try to become like him. Just saying "Guck Dieter an" would mean that you should look at him "right now" because maybe he's doing something worth watchin at this exact moment. I'm not sure if there exists anything similar in English.
Playing since 1992, they moved from hardcore music towards dark ambient and jazz experiments. Their sound is floating somewhere in between the tranquility of simple, jazzy swing and haunting atmosphere of gloomy ambient or even black metal. For me, 'Black Earth' and 'Dolores' albums are magna cartas of modern music:

As a follower of the German Industrial scene for the last 15 years or so, im astonished these guys didnt come up in this thread yet (granted most of their music is in english) they headline some of the biggest outdoor music festivals in Germany.
More German music maybe a bit more obscure, but well known in the industrial scene
This is a Slovenian group but they sing in German alot
Edit: hmmm.. i feel dumb, so you dont use the embed link youtube gives you?
Frittenbude - Mindestens in 1000 Jahrn: Gotta say that it's their best song by far, I'm not that much into their other tracks. But this one is on my favorite lists ever since I heard it (Isenseven always has great music btw and quite a few German artists, too):
Zombie Nation: Great German electro music. Internationally known for Kernkraft 400 (search for it if you don't recognize the name, you definitly know the melody). I think his other tracks are rather underestimated, this is one of my favorites:

I was not quite satisfied with the explanations given so i hope i can clear this up more. Grammaticly this small sentence is really not that easy. "dir" is the Dativ of the personal pronoun "du". As you probably know a Dativ is used for indirect objects like in "Ich schreibe Klaus einen Brief" - "i write a letter to Klaus". In this case "Ich", the acting person, is the subject ( Nominativ), "Brief" (in this case with the non determining article "ein"(Akkusativ. "einen")) is the direct object ( Akkusativ-Objekt) and "Klaus" is the indirect object. Direct and indirect is meant in relation to the verb. Analogous is the sentence " Ich schreibe dir einen Brief" meaning " I write a letter to you" with the "dir" beeing the indirect object (Dativ Objekt).
The problem with your sentence is that "gucken"(ever wondered where "to look" came from? ) normally doesn't require or even allows for an indirect object. It is hard to precisely describe how the dir acts here but it can perhabs be translated semi accurately."guck dir Dieter an" - "have a look at Dieter ( with an implied invitation to process the informatio you get by looking)".
The determined article "der" ( or in this case its Akkusativ "den") is not really proper German (you should not use it with personal names) but it's commonly used to emphasise the specificness ( sorry for that word^^) of that person. So if a parent in the context of the song tells his child "guck dir den Dieter an" it wants his child to have a look at Dieters merits in comparison to his own failiures ( that's the processing part).
Coming back to the use of "dir" as an indirect object for "gucken" you could loosely say that allthough a person can always only look for himself in this case it's emphasised that the looking person himself is involved in the process of looking. Meaning it invites the person to not only point his eyes at Dieter but also take in the Information. So the use of the indirect object furthers the involvement of the subject if that makes any sense to you.
I can't explain why the "denn" in "Musst du die denn färben?" has the function that it does. It's a rethorical question and the function of the "denn" is, as explained earlier in this thread, to convey disapproval. I dont know how to translate it literally but "Do you really have to dye them?" said with an disapproving voice carries the meaning okish. Usually "denn" is a Konjunktion that ushers in an explaining sentence.
The Chinese version of Junge is so funny hahahaha I respect him for learning the language but I can't help but to laugh at the pronunciation. Much of the meaning and subtleties are lost too.
an amazing song from my favourite artist Prinz Pi. it s german rap, but with a very high literal level, he doesnt swear even one time and he speaks not too fast so i guess this song is beside from its great content a good song to hear some clear german

I even translate they lyrics since they are quite good: Weltuntergangskommando - Orkan über Frankfurt (Frankfurt = city with the banking center of germany, comparable to wall street in the US) translated: downfall squad - hurricane above Frankfurt
They stand like a stone in the surge so proud and self-righteous And no storm on earth could do harm to them they decide upon good and bad and their words are meant to last forever and pride nibbles on their podium and the fear in their eyes behind sunglasses we have seen it.
chorus I just want to be a hurricane above Frankfurt for once One which contorts the toupees And roams around the houses just for pure delight and which crushes a little.
Lost every ideal, forgetten what friendship means got lost in the garden of winners chosen the wrong way their words were words without a future and pride nibbles on their podium and the fear in their eyes behind sunglasses we have seen it.

when the farmer came home he wanted to have something to eat Oh Lieschen fix me some millet, baked potato and bacon and when the farmer sat and ate something moved in the bedroom Oh lovely wife what is that noise? Somethings moving in the bedroom Oh lovely husband it's the wind moving the kitchencupboards The farmer said: I want to see it myself, want to go into the chamber And when the farmer entered the chamber, the priest pulled up his trunks Oi priest what are you doing in my house, I'll throw you out right away The priest said: what I am doing, your wife cant do the confession yet So the farmer took a piece of wood and hit the priest until he screams the Priest screamed: oh scare, oh horror and held his ass outside the window The people came from close and far thinking they are seeing the morning star Tis was not the morning star it was the priests ass face This shall happen to every priest who goes to someone elses women and the moral of the story never trust the priests ass face

I get offended for the Germans when people say they've never had any good musicians.
The lyrics as a whole may be confusing for non native german speakers (and even for native ones ), but still great for learning words/phrases. Aside from that he just makes really beautiful music.

Since I am of the strong conviction that Peter Heppner has not been mentioned enough in this thread (only twice if I am not mistaken) I'm gonna go ahead and post some more yt links to songs where he participated.
The first one is maybe not perfectly well suited to learn german, since the text is rather poetic, but they speak very clearly:
(Goethes Erben & P. Heppner - Glasgarten (The song is a rather poetic description of a garden made of glass plants.))
The second one may be better since the sentences have more of a real meaning to them:
(P. Heppner - Alleinesein (A song about the feeling of being alone (= Alleinesein) for a time and being happy about it, because it means you can do all the things you usually has to put aside for your partner.) )
The third song I would recommend is a song which is about german history and german identity:
(Paul van Dyk & P. Heppner - Wir sind Wir)
In all of these songs the main singer is Peter Heppner who has a very characteristic voice. One of my favorite german artists.
Karneval Songs not everybody likes it but if you are interested in Germany and German culture you should visit cologne when its Karneval + Show Spoiler +
Since you were talking about House-MD-ey music, I think you'd quite enjoy this one (he also has a hilariously German name):
He tells a story with his song as well. I think it would be quite nice for trying to learn German. The lyrics do repeat but the story continues through changing bits of the lyrics and telling quite an interesting character development.
Maybe some German Neofolk? A bit cheesy at times, but I think it fits nicely to the tone of our language
In my opinion, Forseti was the best german Neofolk-"group". Sadly the artist doesn't continue his project anymore.
If you happen to like them, you can also try out Sonne Hagal, Dies Natalis and maybe Darkwood. Non German Bands: Sol Invictus (!), Of the wand and the moon, Hagalaz Runedance.
