Screen savers are fun, artistical and a sign of creativiness. Thats why people use it around the world and to save screens too. Screen savers exist because back in the old days screens couldnt show a static picture for an extended period of time without leaving a mark on it.
So to avoid making a mark people out there started to invent screen savers which basically all they do is making a static screen into a screen that changes without any input from the user.
Today though i think screens can show static screens without taking permanent damage, but screen savers are still here because people developped them into art.
Its art and its great!
Here for example is my screeny what is yours?
The earth revovles around and show all the major cities and how big they are in inhabitants - AWESOME! And i have the clock there too - so tight haha
My screen turns off automatically after a while. saves energy and what's the point on having fancy screen saver anyways becouse it's supposed to run where you're not on computer. :O

The point of screensavers is to constantly refresh your screen so images doesn't "burn in".
If by turn off you mean completely shuts power to the screen then that's a good thing albeit unnecessary(screen uses up minimal energy anyway), however if it remains powered but the screen just goes black, you're risking burn ins.
Not my current screensaver (solid black), but here's one I used for a few years:
Modern monitors don't actually need screensavers. Old CRTs had a problem with burn-in, but you'll never get them today. Screensavers are just for fun now.
