After reading different forums and this thread I bought Asus Xonar DG for its price, dolby feature and the build in amp. Was this a good choice? I can spend more on a sound card such as Asus Essence ST or on dac+amp combo, but not sure if it is worth it. Or should I have bought a cmss-3d card instead to get the most out of positional audio (i started to get a bit confused when reading about cmss-3d vs dolby etc.) CS:Go is the fps of choice for the moment if it matters, though this may change in the future For starters, it's a closed headphone, so positional audio is going to be inferior to certain decent open cans like the AD700 for example, but it doesn't mean it's going to be absolutely terrible. I'm not sure about cmss-3d vs dolby, but the general consensus (which isn't necessarily correct) is that generally creative's algorithms are better for games, but dolby's can make movies more enjoyable. The Xonar DG is fine for your purpose, you could try a cheap creative card to see if it's better/more preferable if you really care, but the AD700 would be a much larger improvement. Personally I'd just be happy with what I had, it's good enough if you're not on a signed team etc. Also a general question, for headphone simulated surround sound it doesn't really matter if card is 5.1 or 7.1 right? Correct. 7.1 cards have extra output ports for 7.1 speakers, the algorithms for the headphone output are generally the same. The coiled cable seems a bit heavy, but a super minor thing. Anyone know how these compare to the AD700? The m-50's have a small soundstage, even for a closed headphone, which means if you're ultra competitive at fps games you might be disappointed. The ad-700's have a huge soundstage, and are quite restrained in the lower frequencies, which makes them ideal for this purpose. As far as general usage though, the m50's isolate somewhat (the ad700's don't), don't leak sound (the ad700's do), and have a fairly balanced output, albeit focused on the lows/highs, which can make the mids seem repressed. Personally, I love this presentation for music, and as a result of this I always eq the mid frequencies down (in a 'v' shape) when switching to my IEM's. Basically, I'd take the m50's over the ad700's myself for anything but fps games ![]()

My jack port is slowly dying (making cracklings, I know it does not come from the heaphones), but I have jack headphones that I really like (Sennheiser HD449) so I don't want to just replace them with usb headphones which could sound worse to me. So I have to buy a good external USB soundcard in order to be able to connect my headphones to my computer through USB. Which one would you recommend ? I heard that some external soundcards are absolutely terrible so it seems to be an important choice. By the way, is the difference between "amplifier" and "external usb soundard" the fact that the amplifier is connected to a jack port and the sound card to an usb port, or am I completely off ? I hope you an help, thank you ! One option which I would recommend is to get a USB DAC and then an amp to plug into it. I use the behringer UCA-202 DAC, ($30) and an objective 2 amplifier ($60-200 depending on if you build or buy, where you buy, type of enclosure, etc). That DAC is the best 'bang for your buck' and provides great quality as long as you don't use the headphone port on it, and instead use the line outputs (see: http://nwavguy.blogspot.ca/2011/02/behringer-uca202-review.html for review on this DAC). As for the amp, you can find a number of cheaper amps than the O2, there's a lot of ways to go here. Just read some reviews and pick one that fits the sound you'd like--people seem to generally like the FiiO brand amps quite a bit. You'll just need an RCA - 3.5mm cable to plug the amp into the DAC. Then you're good to go!

Anyone know how these compare to the AD700? they are totally different headphones; the M50's are closed so they have better bass and noise isolation. AD700 are open, meaning they leak sound, but the soundstage is amazing and the higher range is better than the M50's, however at the cost of ALOT of bass.

It made sounds terrible (like mono in one ear), weapon shots would echo etc. Regular stereo sound positioning was just as good if not clearer. Don't recommend sound cards for this purpose at all.

The distance from my head to the headphone jack is probably 4-5 feet which is slightly longer than the coil at rest, would the force of the slightly extended cable be noticeable? I'd just get the straight cable but the long cord (3m long) seems like an big inconvenience anywhere except at my computer. If you plan on travelling casually with the M50 at all, the coiled cable is really your only choice. The straight cable can be used if you're okay with wrapping it, but it's very bulky. In general, you want a short cable, because then you can attach a quality extension cable if you need the extra length, which is impossible for long cables. I don't believe in cable sound quality though. Even more preferable is non-proprietary de-attachable cables, but that's only with modding for the M50.

Also, I know very little about DACs and amps, but I am willing to spend the money to make sure I get the most out of my headphones.

These are gonna be purely for music listening, and I listen to a very wide variety of music, so I really want a headset that is a neutral as possible. I've been reading about various AKG models after being recommended by a friend, but I've noticed that a lot of people seem to think the lows aren't all that great with AKGs, and that's a no good for me. I don't really mind whether they are closed or open, does TL have any suggestions? Also, I know very little about DACs and amps, but I am willing to spend the money to make sure I get the most out of my headphones. Dont buy something you never listened to. Everyone have a different taste when it comes to sound. Go to a local shop and bring your favorite music on a cd and buy the ones you fancy the most. Best tip you will ever get. AKG headphones have good bass. It's just not extended as most cheap headphones are these days. There's a slight cold sound to them because of this. The highs and the mids are excellent. I'm EQ my 701s to make them a little warmer and fun sounding. When i listen to jazz or aucustic i always turn the EQ off for obvious reasons.

I also have a modded 669, with the elastic headband extracted from a Pioneer SE-M390, and the more comfortable ear pads of the aforementioned 668B. I must say I am more satisfied with the 662, with the shorter cable mod it is more suited for commute than the 669. More comfortable headband and ear pads, even accounting for the mods on the 669. Better isolation and better bass on vehicles, and easier to drive 2x32 ohm headphones than 2x56 ohm ones.

I want to buy new earbuds (I get static noise from my Apple earbuds and that drives me nuts). I use them for gaming/listening to music. I guess I use earbuds 90% of the time I'm on my PC. I don't have speakers and I don't want to use my big ass headset all the time, because I feel that it's uncomfortable after 2-3 hour long gaming sessions. I don't really know what I should look for so I wanted to ask you guys if you can recommend something nice. Budget is 80€ max. Thank you in advance! ~Kunkle
