About this masterpiece of marketing you can't even get any information concerning frequency range, quite funny for that amount of money. Frequency range or frequency response? Of course I'd rather see more published information, but it's uncommon for anybody to publish frequency response data. Frequency range (e.g.16Hz - 26 kHz) is quite obviously useless without any information about relative amplitudes at all those frequencies in whatever it is they want to quote for the range, and that's generally what most list. You are right of course, but they should publish frequency response. I'm with NwAvGuy on this. Not sure if you're familiar with his blog: Again, if a manufacture can’t provide detailed specs, think twice. They probably either never even properly tested their product (as with the NuForce uDAC-2), or if they did, they’re embarrassed to share the results. Source: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/gain-and-headphone-ampsdacs.html Although there he is referring to Amps and DACs. In my opinion there is a lot of confirmation bias with high-end audio, in particular at the very high-end (like with cables... holy shit). The NuForce uDAC-2 reference refers to this: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/nuforce-udac-2-drama.html

There's still plenty of alternatives with those criteria. On January 07 2012 06:42 decafchicken wrote: Pads on my m50s are starting to crack, any recommendations for replacements? I know there's plenty of M50 owners here, so since I have no good idea, I'm bumping this for you. There should be a lot of aftermarket alternatives, which may fit differently and perhaps change the sound somewhat, but what looks like the original pads are readily available: http://www.amazon.com/Technica-Replacement-ATH-M50-ATH-M50S-Headphones/dp/B006NH8768 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ATHM50EarPad

Now what is the scoop on those audio technicas? General consensus is that they have a similar sound signature to the DT770s (their mids are a little more present, their bass is just a little rolled off on the end), they isolate just a little worse than the DTs. They're a little bit easier to drive. They're actually quite similar headphones. The big differences I can see: M50s are smaller = more portability compared to the big ass DTs. M50s have pleather ear pads = more uncomfortable in the long term versus the velours on the DTs. Speaking of the m50 pads...mine are starting to crack. Any suggestions on good replacements? Look at this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/414574/velour-felt-pads-for-ath-m50/60#post_6005157 Apparently the Beyer DT250 velours fit on the M50. There's pictures and everything of how to install it. Now, I don't know if it would change the sound signature or anything, but my guess would be that because the M50s already sound quite similar to the DT770s and the DT250 velours use the same material as the DT770 velours, it shouldn't have that big of an impact. I'm sure that thread will have people who did the change and can comment on the difference. I'd totally pursue velours because I'm now spoiled and cannot wear pleather, otherwise get more stock pads (bleh).

Cool video: + Show Spoiler + I think the only time cables really make a difference is when it's like a microphone or a guitar cable, as the signal from a microphone or pickup is very low, so any interference makes a big difference. They are also often in situations where there could be a lot of interference, which is why microphones used "balanced" cables.

The Shure 440 pads seem to fit as well as the 840, but those are a bit loose. My pads are starting to feel quite dry and I've only had them for 5 months =(

But nowadays I dont use headphones at all because of tinnitus and I would not recommend using headphones if possible. One of the biggest reasons for me getting it was the long hours of headphones... No, I'd bet it was the long hours of excessive volume. I don't know why people keep listening at excessive volumes when you can actually train your brain to listen to non-hearing damaging levels.

It makes no difference whether the speaker is next to your ear or 200m away, it's the volume that reaches your ear that counts. That is not true. "In loudspeaker reproduction, sounds must travel several feet before reaching the listener's ears. By the time they arrive, a portion of the high frequencies have been absorbed by the air. Low frequencies are not absorbed as much, but they are more felt through bone conduction than actually heard. With headphones, the ears hear all frequencies without any attenuation, because the transducers are literally pressed against them. Thus, when listening to headphones at the same effective volume level as loudspeakers, headphones may still transmit louder high frequencies that are more likely to cause hearing damage." http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/articles/hearing_art.htm
