So far there've been far more questions than answers as to how a young Asian man managed to board an Air Canada flight to Vancouver expertly disguised as an elderly Caucasian man.
Authorities have yet to identify the man, who has claimed refugee status and has been detained pending a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board.
Former transportation minister John Baird has said the incident is of "deep concern" and that there will be a "full investigation."
Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick confirmed Canada Boarder Service Agency officials met the man when he arrived on Oct. 29 aboard flight AC018.
"It should be noted that there are multiple identity checks before departure at the Hong Kong international airport, including Chinese government-run Hong Kong passport control, which Hong Kong-originating passengers must undergo," he said, refusing to elaborate on what measures Air Canada staff are supposed to take.
A spokesman for the current transport minister, Chuck Strahl, said airlines are required to verify the identity of all passengers who appear to be 18 years old or older as per Identity Screening Regulations, which were updated as recently as this fall.
"That means air carriers are supposed to look at a passenger's face to determine if they appear to be over 18, and if so, compare their physical appearance with their travel documents," John Babcock said.
It's not clear whether these procedures were followed in this case.
According to a confidential CBSA intelligence report dated Nov. 1 and obtained by CNN, a "possible impostor" was identified by Air Canada Corporate Security after a seemingly elderly man was spotted with "younger looking hands."
"During the flight the subject attended the washroom and emerged an Asian male that appeared to be in his early 20s," the alert said.
The confidential alert which, according to CBSA, will never be officially released, also contained three photos of the man. The first shows a thin, 20-something Asian man in a button-down striped shirt and a shaggy haircut, his eyes obscured.
The second shows him in a silicone old-man mask, which covers his chest and shoulders. An official's hand can be seen in the photo lifting a corner of the mask, which is draped over his shirt.
In the last photo, the mask is tucked into his shirt and he's wearing his full disguise, which includes a cardigan, glasses and a hat.
Border services officers met the man at the gate in Vancouver and escorted him off the aircraft and through the primary inspection line, where he made a claim for refugee protection, the alert said.
The man originally claimed to have only one piece of luggage, but the border officers found two more. One bag contained personal clothing, a second contained a pair of gloves and a third contained a "disguise kit," including a silicone-type head and neck mask of an elderly Caucasian male, a brown leather cap, glasses and a thin brown cardigan.
The alert said the man donned the disguise for border officers, even mimicking the movements of an elderly person, and admitted he boarded the flight with the disguise on and removed it several hours later.
The alert said it is believed the man swapped boarding passes with a U.S. citizen passenger who was born in 1955, but it is unclear why he did so.
In addition to the boarding card, the man also provided an Aeroplan card — issued by Air Canada's frequent flyer program — as identification when he boarded in Hong Kong. Neither boarding nor Aeroplan cards reflect dates of birth.
The man's name and home country have not been released, but CBSA officials referred to him as a "foreign national."
CBSA officials would only say that they "intercepted and detained" a traveller "attempting to enter Canada under false pretences."
"Transport Canada is aware of the incident and is investigating whether the Identity Screening Regulations were respected," the agency said.

I'm pretty sure they read further down in the article that he had gloves with some of his luggage, maybe he opted not to wear them because it would draw attention.
this is really awesome! That disguise is really good he can go to clubs techno rave and still look young, perhaps he gets some fine 20year old gals to pleasure him

While I find it absolutely hilarious that he got caught because of taking off the mask in the air plane washroom + younger hands, I cannot dismiss the mask itself. Looks very very well made.

So the danger of a bomb depends on the color of your skin? kk.
No . . . but your odds of getting searched might.
I used to be a rare Asian frequently flying through a small airport in northern Louisiana. Each time I went through, I was randomly chosen to be searched. The odds of being searched are almost surely dependent on skin color.

He asked for asylum I believe? Still amazing of course.
Wow SO good! Only flaws perhaps is that the face is a little too rough looking. Idk about others but someone that looks so roughed up like that would draw my attention. If the wrinkles were slightly less profound, the mouth/jaw/skin slightly less unsymmetrical, and the eye lids opened up a bit... (especially the eye lids, they're almost closed!).
And yeah he must have been like suffocating under there. Hence the bathroom thing probably. Hmm may be he's a South Koren persecuted because his starcraft skills were too good and he would dominate the likes of Flash and Jaedong too hard! haha Well this dude must have been really smart or really rich to have gotten so far. Assuming he is smart, he probably took of the mask not just because of uncomfortableness... I don't think he would be stupid enough to do that, people would notice; hey how come this young asian guy is sitting here instead of that old guy? (correct me if im wrong, im not sure but from what i got from the article he took the mask off and came out an asian? or did he mean to perhaps take the mask off just for a breather and put it back on before leaving the bathroom?)
Either way seems like he's getting what he aimed for!
I imagine the conversation with the stewardess went something like this:
"I'm not really an old white man, I'm a young asian man." "OMG" "Well actually, I'm not really a young asian man, I'm a horse." "OMG" "Actually, I'm not really a horse, I'm a broom." *plop*
Maybe its publicity stunt for mission impossible 4 XD. Anyhow, this is quite cool, tho, i think that mask might be not so convincing up close. I suppose no one made eye contact at all. Normal for complete strangers i suppose.
I can definitely picture someone with that disguise to be able to communicate without actually talking. As a grumpy old man, you can basically let out grunts and utilize annoyed body gestures to dismiss people around you. It would be so much harder to get away with it if you were wearing a mask of an old and friendly looking white guy.

Plastic face doesn't set off metal detectors or bomb sniffing dogs. I'm just curious how he got the passport that works that's what's concerning about this.
The problem with that disguise is... you can't help but stare at it. Even if it was a real old man he looks so frail and just downright old you just automatically watch every move he makes for fear he might injure himself just by walking. Which is probably what happened when he went to go to the washroom. As good as his disguise was, it just brought more attention to himself.
I've taken many airplane flights and sometimes I don't even remember the face of the person who was sitting beside me. But when you look exceptionally different like this guy did, you remember.

Negative. I'm a fairly ordinary looking white Aussie and for about 5 consecutive flights I've been randomly picked for a random bomb test.

EDIT: It says in this article! that the asian guy swapped passports with a 55 year old American man, I think
I think the fact that the asian man claimed refuge is probably significant. Either he REALLY wants to get away from something, or he's delirious (not as likely, judging from how elaborate this was). If it's the former, I find it only fair that they do an investigation on the purpose before administering any punishment.

you know, if you really want to disguise yourself this professionally, there has to be something fishy going on. so its good theres atleast an investigation
I'm sure there's a problem with lying to customs and immigration. Not to mention breach of contract with the airline, and stuff like using someone else's passport to identify yourself (what's that? fraud?).
Haha wow... if he would've just taken a breather in the bathroom then put it back on he could've got away with it. That is, had no one noticed his hands or whatever.
Also, the part where he claimed refuge got me thinking that he probably had people coming after him overseas.
reminds me of johnny knoxville from jackass when he does the old man suit bit. it was in jackass 2 and 3d. if you haven't seen it go so it jackass 3d was really funny xd!
Wow such a weird disguise to choose lol, did he have a passport with a picture that looked like that or something? Definitely should have just kept the mask on for the whole journey lol. Either way, under the Asian mask I assume he's wearing this:

How many white guys have blown up commercial jetliners?
Arabs look more white than Asian. Many can pass of as Southern European (Italians/Spanish/Greeks/etc).
And on this note, all those people are generally searched as well. I went on many international trips via the U.S with my soccer team, and my coach was spanish, and in his late 50's. (from uruguay originally) He got searched at every airport, and in I believe it was Denver, we almost missed the flight because of the search. Like really, if a coach of a team with matching jackets gets searched so often, single young men must get it even worse. (Non-white) These trips were between 2005-2007, so no it wasn't a month after 9-11 or anything.
This story was all over the news in hong kong, they state the man is Chinese. Interesting how he can get away with it, apparantly now hes seeking for the canadian government to protect him and is also claiming he should be given benefits. I will try to find a source..

Laughed out loud at this comment, you have it backwards, I'm afraid
