Yes but that name wouldn't fit in this General forum yet should belong in the Broodwar forum. So you must go there if you want to answer that one !

little bit of useless knowledge about Clerks..

in the scene where Randal is ordering all the porno flicks in front of the woman and her little girl:

The guy who played Randal wouldn't do the scene with the little girl present. So they filmed them seperately and dubbed his voice over the scenes with the woman.

however the woman wanted her reactions to be "natural", so she insisted someone else read the lines out loud while she was "acting"

1. American History X
2. Primal Fear
3. Lord of the Rings (all movies I'll just take them as 1)
4. The Matrix (same)
5. Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels
6. The Big Lebowski
7. Memento
8. Requiem for a Dream
9. American Beauty
10.Shawshank Redemption

there's many other good movies that could make it to the bottom of my top 10, and my top 10 changes every day, but still it's quite an accurate list.

(I have not seen Godfather, even though I got the trilogy on DVD . always looking up against that 9 hour-sit)

of course special mention to movies such as Boondock Saints, Vanilla Sky, The Game, Minority Report, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Fight Club, Good Will Hunting, Rounders, Shrek, Ice Age, Finding Nemo, The Usual Suspects, Life of David Gale & more but they don't make it (by a small margin)

Also I have to admit I'm not much of a mafia / war movie fan so I do recognize there's some really good movies in the genre that I like but just not *that* much.

offtopic but a guy on an OGN commercial just said he has invented a hoverboard a la back to the future 2

he says the steering is not perfected. It does hover however, and you can move around. from the footage of the guy using it you can zip around pretty good. it uses "the magnetic field generated by the earth!"

looks neat

When I'm "In The Zone" I make ALOT, and I mean ALOT of money.
And once I get "in the zone" I don't leave it until I take a break from poker.
When I needed the money for my new computer(5500), I made it in 7 days, and the first 3 days I had less than 200 dollars profit a day, and the 4th day I didn't make that much either. It's cause I got in the zone the 5th day!

Yay StoneR has gotten himself some taste not naming movies you expect from everyone. That's really positive. Doesn't look the same as my list would but I really give credits to his own taste!

ok, i have trouble making a definite list because i can't really say what "top" is...

first of all, i haven't watched a lot of "classic" or so called "must-see" movies, so i'm probably missing out many things.
also, i think there is a difference between an "artful" movie or a movie which is simply entertaining, charming. example: amelie. i really enjoyed that film but i wouldn't say it's a masterful work of art. opposite: mulholland drive. beautiful aesthetics in every aspect but quite exhausting to watch (considering all those negative vibes).

but whatever, here are some movies i consider to be the best i've watched (overall criteria):

space odyssee 2001
seven samurai
chinatown
apocalypse now
clockwork orange

there are a lot of movies which i also find very interesting and good but i think those five stand out somehow (in my list).

i dont think gattaca is uknown just not among the favorites maybe... the concepts and assumptions of the future in that flick seem so much more possible than anything else i've ever watched.

especially since the genome has been completely mapped out and now we are mapping protiens. what this means is that they will be able to make people immune to any type of sickness, replace limbs, add additional human/animal physical/mental aspects to people ( like a new arm or the sight of a hawk ).

The True True Top 10 Movie List !

1. Forrest Gump
2. Rushmore
3. Good Will Hunting
4. Rounders
5. Donnie Darko
6. Office Space (I'll go ahead and make sure you get another copy of that memo, mmmkay)
7. Meet The Parents (What if I was in the military, and I was a Bombadeer? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb-bomb b-bomb-bomb bomb bomb bomb)
8. Monty Python's The Holy Grail (The Black Knight always triumphs! Have at you!)
9. Fight Club
10. American Beauty

No film will ever truly top Forrest Gump. It is absolute perfection in the filmmaking world. It's so good that personal opinion shouldn't even enter into it... people who don't really like it should still be able to see that it's better than any other movie they've ever seen.

I've remembered one movie that impressed me a lot first time I saw it: CUBE

I like that film very much but many of my friends think that is a piece of shit

there really can't be a best list since all the movies have been percieved by a unique human being with his/her own taste and emotion. this bears more on what movie is favored than the quality of the film.

the best list is what you like best.

yea

though I do have the feeling a ton of these list are based on certain movies because the person who made it has only seen very few movies, so that certainly qualifies as a 'bad' list. even in their eyes, in a couple years from now.

I think "Gigli" is the best movie ever. Lopez and Affleck's onscreen chemistry and whitty writing (Gobble gobble) redefine cinematic standards. The only film that comes even close is the amazing "Glitter," which is fueled by the AMAZING performance of Mariah Carey.

I enjoyed Gigli. I think I had about 50 mental orgasms during it all, and the interaction with the retarded character was so incredibly stupid and poorly done that I couldn't stop laughing.

Hearing Jennifer Lopez talk about her pussy while she did yoga was just amazing.

Hmmpff a movie top 10 is very hard to make for me but here goes:

1: Terminator 2 and 1 (this pick is very easy for me)
2: Boondock Saints (Almost cried when "the funny man" died, so sad)
3: The Godfather (1 & 2, maybe 3)
4: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (i love this movie, best western ^^)
5: Lord Of The Rings (Especially 2&3, 1 was awesome too ofcourse.)
6: Forrest Gump
7: The Matrix (1 ofcourse)
8: American History X
9: Saving Private Ryan
10: Kill Bill 1, Snatch, Requiem for a Dream, Trainspotting, The Rock, Ali G, Freddy Got Fingered, Quest for the Holy Grail etc...

From 2 until 9 took me a long ass time thinking :O.

At least I am glad, that nobody mentiones The Godfather. It doesn't deserve to be the #1 at IMDB. Well, it does, because it's majority's opinion but IMHO it was not that good.

Attention.

I edited my old post but I doubt many will notice as people who already read this thread probably won't look back to older pages.

Anyway, I said of some list to be the best yet listed.

Of course I meant the one _I_ find fits my likings the best. I thought that was the common way to read it.
I only put it in that way cause someone (If i didn't misread) had talked bad about that list just ahead of my post. If I wanted the same message to go through without that post having been done I would've spent more time to make the sentence make a bit more sense I guess.

The Godfather
The Shawshank Redemption
Star Wars
Schindler's List
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Indiana Jones, I'm waiting for the 4th episode, it will be out in the middle of 2005, if everything goes to plan, which i doubt

Jurassic Park (only the first part), brought a revolution to the moviemaking with his CGI-efects, so i think i deserves to be mentioned

The Matrix (also only the first one) - the same as Jurassic Park

The Lion King - the best animated film ever, forget about Shrek, Monsters Inc, Nemo, etc.

LOTR - ok, the movie is very good, a little bit too flashy i think, but this movie doesnt have a plot,it just a good making of the Talken's book, and have anyone thought what will be the effect, if someone as good in making such movie adaptation of books as Richard Jackson make an adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" (which i think will be done), i think that the effect will be astonishingly good

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Scarface, I havent seen so much cocaine in any other movie

Not in my top ten, but its a must see : Interstate 60

Pulp Fiction
Boondock saints
Butterfly effect
Snatch
Scarface
Clockwork orange
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
51st state
A beautiful mind
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

just a few of my favourite, in no particular order except that I find pulp fiction the most entertaining movie ever

There are many other great movies, too hard to make a real top 1-10 =)

btw I find many old movies that are considered 'classic' quite sleep inducing, although I can often see why they're highly rated =P

Fuck, how did i leave out The Godfather, seven, life of david gale and gladiator.

I remember making a huge thread just like this a while back and talking about some of these movies I just thought were verrrrry overrated.

American Beauty (didnt like)
Requiem for a dream

And what's with SWAT being on peoples list. This movie had the most far fetched plot ive seen in a while. Some guy who is rich tells people watching the news broadcats he'll give them all kinds of money if they break him out. Then u've got gangs and people risking their lives going to war with the police all based on some guy who they have no idea what his credibility is about. I thought this movie was alright for entertainment purposes but definitely shuldnt be on a top movies list.

There's a lot of films I know are brilliant (schindlers list, donnie darko, citizen kane etc), but haven't seen, so I am just posting the films I like best and can watch many many times...

In no order:

Dr Strangelove
Pulp Fiction
Forrest Gump
Delicatessen (spelling?)
Brazil
LOTR: FOTR/ROTK
Star Wars: the Empire strikes back
Midnight Run (an unheralded classic comedy)
Blade Runner
Final Fantasy: the spirits within (I know it's crap, but still really enjoyed it)

If I could have an 11th, it would be Airplane.

Someone want to do a top 10 books thread? Or has that been done/ BW players don't read?

Life of David Gale
Gladiator
Braveheart
Seven
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Red Dragon
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Empire Strikes Back

And on a tangent, why does a movie have to be out for over a year before people will start talking about what a universally good movie it was?

I liked Spiderman 2 a lot.

Edit: Forgot to mention I already did my top 10 list, I was just naming another 10 movies that weren't on my list that were also really good !

If I recall correctly the visual aspect (some very neat special effects) of snatch and the funnier characters were what I liked better about it. Brat Pitt as that pikey is just too damn funny

For the avid pokers players, Shade is a good movie to watch. It is different from Rounders in that it feature people more like Worm. It's a poker movie about hustlers, and though the tricks involved seem very impossible, there are people out there that can actually do them, as it shows in the beginning and end of the movie. Enjoy

Saw Equilibrium last night, omg what a fucked up movie. The plot is like a weak rip-off from 1984 (the book) and the fighting scenes, LOL. 1 guy with no body armor and 2 hand guns shooting like 30 (bodyarmored) people with automatic machine guns by moving in funny ballet poses ://
the whole idea of the movie is totally unrealistic too.

it's not about the fighting scenes, the thoughts behind everything are pretty impressive. desocialization of society, accepting war as a part of humanity, emotion conquerring peace, etc.

it's not about the action at all, but these days sometimes you have to make a movie so that you'll actually get some views. this is one of the ways. same goes for the matrix where they used a very popular concept to draw attention to themselves with matrix 1, then using this attention to project their actual message in matrix 2 and 3 (whether you liked them or not - you watched them)

yes sometimes people will wonder why i liked a movie that was just poorly produced and directed with bad acting like The One and the final fantasy movie. i really liked both of those movies but the majority of the people i have spoken with about them really thought they were boring. i liked them because of the abstract concepts. what i really liked about final fantasy was the theorie on death that was presented.

i think the confliction here is definitely based on how much value the actual concept, idea, and message of a movie hold for you compared to other aspects of the film ( such as production, special effects, atmosphere, directing, acting ).

what were the actual messages in matrix 2 and 3? i figured the first flick was really just to get people thinking about whether truth is more important than their everyday lives and how the possibility of a controled simulation like that could easily be true. i could almost say that i dont think its too far off from what may be the truth, minus all the computers and earth and machines and people that were involved in it. the 2nd and 3rd one seemed to me to be more of a developement of the story.

it's too much to explain. if you wanna know there's plenty to find about it on the internet. but it's ALOT of work to get through. goes from jesus to world after world after world to mythic gods (and their names), double and tripple meanings worked into the names and characters, and much more. kinda cool if you like it but some people just wanna relax and lay back, watch a movie and not think, so yea then matrix 2 and 3 weren't so nice.

I'm not the biggest expert on the Matrix trilogy (cause it takes so much effort), but I've read enough to know there's alot more to it than most people think

the whole idea of the movie is totally unrealistic too.

it's not about the fighting scenes, the thoughts behind everything are pretty impressive. desocialization of society, accepting war as a part of humanity, emotion conquerring peace, etc.

it's not about the action at all, but these days sometimes you have to make a movie so that you'll actually get some views. this is one of the ways. same goes for the matrix where they used a very popular concept to draw attention to themselves with matrix 1, then using this attention to project their actual message in matrix 2 and 3 (whether you liked them or not - you watched them)

Better to steal something good then make something bad. I mean take the Matrix. If you have seen Ghost in the Shell well doesn't it make you think, "hmmm they've stolen some ideas there?". And if you read a lot of SF most aspects of both movies would ring a bell cause there are a lot of SF writers who write about post apocalyptic societies, AI and virtual excistence. Anyways it doesn't make the movie worse i think. I would like to see more movie makers steal cool concepts out of books. Maybe there would be less of those shit movies out there.

Yep but that leaves the plot being a weak ripoff, and the movie being quite boring. It was all a bit too unrealistic to interest me, but it could be me.. : O

True, but there already is a movie about 1984 (1984), and I think it's also hard to enjoy a movie of which you've already seen the plot if it offers nothing but an interesting story. My biggest problem with this movie was that it wasn't realistic in any way though : o

If you think 'omg this is bs this couldn't possibly ever happen in real life' (this only counts if a future earth is the setting, so no SF or Fantasy), then it becomes pretty hard to appreciate what you see.

you have to see every movie within the boundaries it creates

it made perfect sense the way they put it. not compared to the way our world may be as it is today, but what movie holds its own with that criterium? spiderman? matrix?

i don't like that excuse so much.. if the movie is unrealistic within it's own boundaries, then yes I agree it can ruin a whole movie, but that's not the case here.
