Thats what I get when I'm high up but in my balls rofl. I got that watching this video. I don't know why or if its just me... NERVOUS BALLS SYNDROME!!! Needs more wind sound though, as climbing that is super extra freaky with wind... Those poles look so flimsy too... And then your bag falls on top of your head. i would at least expect them to have some kind of guard around any climbing spot like you usually see in those sorts of towers (just a metal fence thing that goes around the ladders, so you could fall back against it if you ever lost your grip. still pretty scary, but not quite as ridiculous).

Absolutely horrifying, but I would expect that this guy would be paid among the most of those in that kind of work. People are generally well-compensated for doing the extremely dangerous shit. And I don't really think they have parachutes on. The helper guy had a harness on but I didn't see anything that resembled a parachute. Would I try to do this for a million bucks? Maybe, but I would definitely be taking the slow way of reattaching my safety line every few steps. I'm just not that confident in myself.

Sorry, I like dangerous things, generally. But even being in iraq or afghanistan is safer then walking across streets statistically. Its not necessarily fair that your life premiums go up when you get deployed since it isn't even more dangerous statistically, but these guys sometimes cannot get life insurance.

Damn you better get some fuckin hazard pay for that shit. You'd think that there'd be some kind of safety thing. Maybe a ratchet system that could go all the way up to the top and wouldn't impede you much. I could do that job with like a reasonable safety system, but as is...no way.

First off I want to thank everyone for the great response I got on the video “Stairway to Heaven”, it was really much more than I could have hoped for. Now, having said that I am also very sorry that I could not keep the video up for you to share with your friends and family. I truly am sorry, I can see from the comments how popular it was and that’s why I want to explain what happened. The footage of the climb came from a friend of mine that does this type of work, I have know him for several years and he has helped me many times in the past. Recently he gave me this video he shot on one of his jobs. I showed him the edited video and he approved it and I put it up on TheOnLineEngineer.Org and You Tube over the weekend. On Monday he was getting calls from colleagues telling him that they were concerned about what the video showed. His world is a very small one, and you don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you! Some facility owners are pretty uptight about liability and such and may not hire him if they think he does not take safety seriously. So he asked me to take it down, and I did. That was Monday morning (Sep 13, 2010). Today (Sep 15) he told me it was up on You Tube, by the time I looked at it it had over 77,000 views. It was on more than a dozen websites. The chance that someone important would see it was increasing rapidly. So the video most of you saw was one that had been ripped off from my website before I took it down. I wrote asking the guy who put it up to take it down but got no response so I contacted You Tube. Once again I am sorry about pulling the video, I know that every time I looked at it my legs got weak, there’s no way I could do that type of work. AND THATS MY POINT – I need this guy who made the video, we plan to do more of them, but it won’t happen if he can’t get work because he’s been black listed by the industry. He’s also my friend and I don’t want to see him get hurt because of some video I put up on the internet. We have had two offers to broadcast this video, a request to submit it to a film festival in France, over 118,000 views on You Tube. This was all much more than we had ever planned for or thought would happen. AS SOON AS WE CAN WE WILL HAVE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT TOWER CLIMBING, in the mean time please be patient. And once again thank you for all the comments. Russ

Also a parachute is probably out of the question. You'd just blow back into the tower and carrying extra weight would probably significantly increase your chance of death (how much does a parachute weight). For OSHA regulations it's probably safer to free climb. I wouldn't be surprised if the threat of lightning storms is the riskiest part of the job (well for anyone qualified to take the job in the first place).

Weither you fall down 100 feet or 1500 really doesnt make that much of a difference any more you should have reached terminal velocity in any case. And even if you fall you still have a minuscule chance to survive after all if you take a position of maximal air friction during your fall and land on something relatively flexible ... like the top of a car for example ![]() Anyway i think most people who do freeclimbing aren't gonna be scared by this, in both cases you fall (and in all likelyhood die) if you slip the only difference is that in one case you get paid and in the other you dont. Then again a lot of people say that you have to be kinda crazy to do freeclimbing anyway. ![]() Definitely was intersting to watch though.

Oh and its not a daily basis job, unless you're a tower climbing contractor of course. I climb a tower maybe once every 4-5 month to change a light beacon(so planes don't go crash into your towers), most of the time you're going to be inside the plant fixing/operating or doing maintenance on the transmitters themselve. Towers require little to no maintenance, its basically just a big metal rod(in most case).

What I'm wondering is how those types of towers are constructed near the top. How do they get the steel up to that height to attach it to that tower? Even cranes have limits...

Also the way down is alot harder. On the way up you have better vision, and on the way down you can't always see your next step, you have to "feel" it. When searching around I expected to find some page where it said they where paid millions and millions a year, but they are paid basically fuck all. Working an average 9 hours a day it seems ( on different radio towers) sometimes way higher. And these huuuge towers, they cannot climb unless the weathers tell them to go ahead. Thats one of the security aspects that is put most weight on. As I mentioned earlier, my friend's acquaintance, who only has to climb towers ~500ft (most towers appear to be 300ft) makes at least 30$/hour. Considering these particular guys climb 17k I'd imagine significantly higher pay for them.

The guy doing push ups in that other video was even more insane although he had a back pack on so I suspect he had some kind of base jumping parashute in it? Would that be possible in such a small bag? If you want to see so scary freeclimbing go search for Alain Robert or Human Spiderman. But why isn't the tower built with one of those safety tracks where you just attach a special hook to it and then just move it up and down, with no loss of speed? btw, 1$/hour is the poverty line limit if I recall right. It's really not that uncommon, even in some developed countries (the general price of things is much lower though)

(of course there are a lot of people employed off-the-books that earn much less).

if he was really that scared he would always be connected to the tower and unhook/rehook so he always would have some protection. if they only get paid 12-30 dollars an hour, wouldnt it make sense for them to take as much time as possible to make the hours anyway and be as safe as possible? i bet this is one of those things that once you do it, you think to yourself "oh this wasnt that bad at all". There are some scarier jobs out there tbh.

Trad climbs have a rack that's over 50 pounds and harder to carry imo. these towers were meant for climbing, so there are plenty of hand and foot holds. I'd be more scared of forgetting an important tool than the climb, which after the first couple climbs, would be unnerving.

It's a myth that you die while falling, it's possible to die from a heart attack like hackmed said but you don't ever go so fast your neck breaks or something. I've had a minute and a half of free-fall from 12,000 feet, which is much more than enough time to hit terminal velocity, and I survived no problem.

The top climber has 2 hooks attached to him, at he climbs, he always puts one hook into a hole. The guy under him always takes his hook out and climsb himself. Both of them are atached to one another. So if at any time one of them falls, they are secured to eachother and they are straped to something, so they will be safe. If you just start this sort of job, that's probably what you will be doing for quite some time until you get desensitized to the fear of heights. Then it's just boring old world with one hell of a view.

I feel like the pseudo-ladder up the red antennae is particularly unsafe. It has small circular protuberances on the sides of the handlebars in order for the safety clip to catch on them, but they're so thin and flimsy looking I can just imagine wind and body weight generating enough force to make the safety clip snap them. EDIT: Erroneous usage.

Maybe he just parachute down. Would be 2x scarier climbing down since a miss step means shit. I don't think he can parachute down. The height is small it would be like jumping with an umbrella from the roof of a house also the parachute could get stuck on the tower... I bet a chimp would solo that for a couple of bananas. xD

QQ, that's a nice pair o' balls he has there. I think that with proper video editing you could scare the shit out of people by editing in a slip and a free fall. :p Edit, the video apparently scared some people really hard which is interesting. This video didn't do that to me (sure I got a little nervous) but I remember actually getting really disturbed in kill bill when the she's buried in a coffin underground. Phobia is interesting. ^_^

I used to do tower construction and putting up ellis shores on the edge of a 56 story tower would make my legs shake. Harness or not, the first 3 or 4 times is scary as hell. Eventually you come to realize that a 56 story fall is the same as a 5 story fall and you don't even trip. Cool vid

The fatality rate for cell phone tower workers is currently 183.6 deaths per 100,000 workers, making it more dangerous than other risky jobs such as ranching, fishing, logging, and ironworking. Five tower workers died during one 12-day span earlier this year alone. 18 tower workers died on the job in 2006. An investigation into the rise in fatalities in this industry has yet to trace the increase to any specific cause.
