Amazing watch, I would shit it in the elevator ride. You need some huge balls and alot of guts to do it. Also wonder how much these guys work out and how often they are called out to do this stuff ? Also wtf are they paid ? I would want some insane sums to do that.

Hahaha I just looked at my hands as I read this and they are visibly covered in sweat.

Also does anyone get this weird feelings in their balls when they are really high up and not really secure? Take your finger and put it between your eyes so you get that weird sensation. Thats what I get when I'm high up but in my balls rofl. I got that watching this video. I don't know why or if its just me... NERVOUS BALLS SYNDROME!!!

Needs more wind sound though, as climbing that is super extra freaky with wind...

Those poles look so flimsy too... I can imagine someone getting stuck 1/2 way up in the fetal position crying and having to have a helicopter rescue them rofl...

You'd probably get impaled by one of the steps so your intestines would be pulled out slowly until you run out of "rope" and then all your guts pulled out while you are still conscious and aware while freezing until you eventually splat on the ground a minute later.

And then your bag falls on top of your head.

Edit:
But your largest wrench fell out of the bag and smashes you in the nuts a second later but about a second after that your second largest wrench shatters your spinal cord so you can feel both even though you are in two pieces.

You know, in the beginning when he's inside the tower climbing ladders I just went "eh, that's not so bad", but then when he goes on the outside I changed my mind. Good thing they have on safety helmets, that should come in handy.
I'm going to sleep, let me get some of that carpet.

Being up there would be my own personal hell. I just can't imagine being so confident that your hand won't slip or a gust of wind won't come that you'd stake your life on it. These freeclimbers must have some sort of essential fear trigger missing from their brains.

I thought to myself "ok, here is where he's going to clip on and safely do his work" five or six times before they finally got to the top. I've got a cold sweat going just from watching that, I hope they get paid really well.

what the hellllllllllllllll

i would at least expect them to have some kind of guard around any climbing spot like you usually see in those sorts of towers (just a metal fence thing that goes around the ladders, so you could fall back against it if you ever lost your grip. still pretty scary, but not quite as ridiculous).

I would do it if I didn't have to haul a 30lb bag, that makes it more work, and a lot more dangerous. There's definitely more dangerous jobs than this though, for instance high-rise construction workers or professional american football/boxing players.

No. No way. Even the slightest slip or gust of wind to blow the bag would result in you falling 1600+ feet. No. -MAYBE- with a parachute and I knew how to use it, but doubt it.

blown something, bulb, wiring, cables, something coulda gotten bent or something, plus after every storm if the tower gets hit I'm pretty sure they would send somebody up to make sure everything is still OK.

But ya, hands are sweaty, fuckthatshit im going to go have a smoke

I was just mindblown rather than having any chills. I could imagine myself doing that but you'd have to be pretty confident and not worry too much about dying. The more you are afraid the bigger chance of you actually slipping since you're concentrating on what might happen instead of just fucking climbing.

It's so cool how high it was really. Would be a great achievement to do. I don't think I'd ever take that big a risk though.

I'm still curious how the hell did they build that thing so tall and skinny. it's not like they can build it on it's side and just tilt it up to the right position.

How do you even recruit someone for this job?
"Wanted: Someone who will ride an elevator 1600 feet into the air, and then climb a ladder, unassisted, 168 feet to repair carrying a 30 pound bag dangling from you."

Seriously, who would sign up for this/train for this?

The thing that scares me the most isn't the climb up, it's the climb down. Climbing up you can latch on a safety at intervals. You got no such safety climbing down. And to have to look down the entire time as you're doing it? That's just crazy. I agree with what one of the other guys said. Climb up and Base Jump down.

God damn. You could strap a duffel bag with a million dollars in cash to the top of that tower, and I would not climb up to get it. No way.

The tower is held up by a bunch of steel cords pulling on each other that have a LOT of tension--there was some show on the History Channel where a single one snapped and the whole tower snapped really really really fast.

These guys have BALLS of STEEL. Imagine how much it must cost for their insurance

The worst part isnt the climbing, the worst part is when he´s up there O_O

Also, a part of me wants to see a video of someone falling from up there. Or, more like, I want to see a video of them dropping a camera attached to a dummy from up there. That would be really freaky!

yawn... so the guy works on top of a tower. Guess what, so did two million and one guy before him. It doesn't matter if you fall from 50, 100, 500 or 2000 feet, you are dead anyway. Man, even I have worked at a "deadly height".Just watch your step and stay alert. Sure, it's dangerous but it's not a huge deal. Many slaters and scaffolders deal with the danger of falling to their deaths every day.

I think I wouldn't be able to climb that as fast as that guy did.
But I think I could do it if it meant I would be set for life. It's not that dangerous if you think about it, you just need to take it slow and be very careful.
But then again if it's really windy it might be a different story.

anyways- this video seems to be popping up on a bunch of forums and i am deathly afraid of heights, but for some reason i like that feeling at the same time... this video feels like a mental rollercoaster i couldnt look away and i couldnt close it for the life of me.

I just thought of a great freshman initiation.

Imagine if the worker's boss told him, that light bulb you installed yesterday was 100 watt, not an energy saving fluorescent. Go back and do it right.

uh that job is way better than being a secretary
secretary is a scarier job than climbing a tower

this guy gets laid
secretaries don't get laid

they definitely need to make that batman device so he can just shoot up to the top of the tower instead of climbing

Must be a pain in the ass to take a piss when you're up there. He's probably wearing layers since it's a higher elevation, plus all the gear, and having to aim away from your partner while dangling from a thin piece of metal. Goddamn.

Oh yeah. Having to climb that high is pretty scary too.

my granddad used to climb old pine trees just to put up bird houses on em. Now given that 200 ft-ish pine trees arent quiet as tall as this tower, its still not something your average guy would do.

I was finding myself going "oh!" and "ahh!" every time he would take a step for the later parts.

Absolutely horrifying, but I would expect that this guy would be paid among the most of those in that kind of work. People are generally well-compensated for doing the extremely dangerous shit.

And I don't really think they have parachutes on. The helper guy had a harness on but I didn't see anything that resembled a parachute.

Would I try to do this for a million bucks? Maybe, but I would definitely be taking the slow way of reattaching my safety line every few steps. I'm just not that confident in myself.

Didn't look that scary man... he can harness himself on at any point and if he wanted to could be secured almost the entire way up. Just because it's higher than other towers doesn't mean it's scarier, you're still gonna die if you fall from one half as high haha.

Pretty cool job he has haha. I would do it!

I work on electrical lines. Second week on the job i had to climb an 80 foot pole to do some work.
Sometimes we do work on transmision towers that reach up to 150 ft.

Nowhere near what this guy is climbing though looks fun!

of course it's scarier if it's a higher tower. it's not necessarily the fear of the death, rather the sheer height and exposure

the wind and sway at that height must be the most terrifying aspect..

I would never do that job, not because I am scared of heights and it is fucking tall (i've jumped out of planes before, i love rappelling and bungee jumping. I'm scared of roller coasters, and ladders), but because it is the job with the highest deaths per 1000.

Sorry, I like dangerous things, generally. But even being in iraq or afghanistan is safer then walking across streets statistically. Its not necessarily fair that your life premiums go up when you get deployed since it isn't even more dangerous statistically, but these guys sometimes cannot get life insurance.

At the end, the guy looks down and you can see his climbing partner. He doesn't appear to have on a parachute, but a harness instead.

Correct. The bottom guy is always latched. The top guy is harnessed to his partner. If either falls they're secured. Same applies on the way down. Either way, if one falls it's going to messy though, lol.

They FREE CLIMB it?

Damn you better get some fuckin hazard pay for that shit.

You'd think that there'd be some kind of safety thing. Maybe a ratchet system that could go all the way up to the top and wouldn't impede you much. I could do that job with like a reasonable safety system, but as is...no way.

The site that originally created this video has taken it down. It seems to imply the reason is because the guy who filmed it is scared of losing employment because of the dangerous way he climbs.

First off I want to thank everyone for the great response I got on the video “Stairway to Heaven”, it was really much more than I could have hoped for. Now, having said that I am also very sorry that I could not keep the video up for you to share with your friends and family. I truly am sorry, I can see from the comments how popular it was and that’s why I want to explain what happened.
The footage of the climb came from a friend of mine that does this type of work, I have know him for several years and he has helped me many times in the past. Recently he gave me this video he shot on one of his jobs. I showed him the edited video and he approved it and I put it up on TheOnLineEngineer.Org and You Tube over the weekend. On Monday he was getting calls from colleagues telling him that they were concerned about what the video showed. His world is a very small one, and you don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you! Some facility owners are pretty uptight about liability and such and may not hire him if they think he does not take safety seriously.
So he asked me to take it down, and I did. That was Monday morning (Sep 13, 2010). Today (Sep 15) he told me it was up on You Tube, by the time I looked at it it had over 77,000 views. It was on more than a dozen websites. The chance that someone important would see it was increasing rapidly. So the video most of you saw was one that had been ripped off from my website before I took it down. I wrote asking the guy who put it up to take it down but got no response so I contacted You Tube.
Once again I am sorry about pulling the video, I know that every time I looked at it my legs got weak, there’s no way I could do that type of work. AND THATS MY POINT – I need this guy who made the video, we plan to do more of them, but it won’t happen if he can’t get work because he’s been black listed by the industry. He’s also my friend and I don’t want to see him get hurt because of some video I put up on the internet.
We have had two offers to broadcast this video, a request to submit it to a film festival in France, over 118,000 views on You Tube. This was all much more than we had ever planned for or thought would happen.
AS SOON AS WE CAN WE WILL HAVE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT TOWER CLIMBING, in the mean time please be patient.
And once again thank you for all the comments.
Russ

Can't imagine it being much scarier than a lot of jobs where you have to be really high: roller coaster inspectors, bridge maintenance guys.

I'm sure you get used to it. And then after that the pay's all good :D

There's probably a fair bit of sway in the tower so it's not the same as being up on something else. The Dubai tower (tallest in the world) has a 4 foot sway at the top for example.

Also a parachute is probably out of the question. You'd just blow back into the tower and carrying extra weight would probably significantly increase your chance of death (how much does a parachute weight).

For OSHA regulations it's probably safer to free climb. I wouldn't be surprised if the threat of lightning storms is the riskiest part of the job (well for anyone qualified to take the job in the first place).

I don't think a parachute would help much because it would get caught on the tower...

Also that video looks really scary XD

I must be cracked in the head because I want to try that for fun. Must take a lot of strength and endurance to climb almost 2000 feet!

Well just see it this way, this is no more dangerous than difficult antenna-work on a 10 story building.
Weither you fall down 100 feet or 1500 really doesnt make that much of a difference any more you should have reached terminal velocity in any case.
And even if you fall you still have a minuscule chance to survive after all if you take a position of maximal air friction during your fall and land on something relatively flexible ... like the top of a car for example
Anyway i think most people who do freeclimbing aren't gonna be scared by this, in both cases you fall (and in all likelyhood die) if you slip the only difference is that in one case you get paid and in the other you dont.
Then again a lot of people say that you have to be kinda crazy to do freeclimbing anyway.
Definitely was intersting to watch though.

He only climbs 160. The other 1500 is in an elevator.

Wow people are saying they wouldn't do this for a million dollars, or even more?! That's a lot of money. I'm pretty sure I would do it...or at least try. I know, I know...I say that now, but I'd definitely give it a shot. I'd probably wimp out and climb down after the first step

It is pretty scary, but I think I would at least try if someone offered me a million to go up and back down...

The thing that would bother me is the wind. It seems like it would be really strong up there, wouldn't it? Crazy :o

My brain would explode at that height. How do you train to do that? How long do most people keep doing that for a living? It seems like you could only do it so many times before your hand slips up once. Then you dead boy, you dead.

Gawd, that is frickin scary! Wow...that guy had better be paid an obscene amount of money to do the job he does, because this is one of those jobs that definitely justifies a massive paycheck. :S

Even for millions of dollars, I don't think I can do that. I don't think I'm psychologically capable of climbing that thing without a lifeline, and even then, I'm not sure if I could.

Like everyone else, my palms are sweating just watching it >_<. I mean seriously, one hand slips and you could die :S.

What he means is that you die from shock before you fall to your death. That only happens if you know you're going to die. Doing it as an activity is completely different and you know you can pull the chute and live.

When it comes to sports awesome sorta negates scary.
This kind of leisure job that takes forever to finish at ridiculous altitude and bare minimum of special training is for those with balls of steel.
I betcha even an experienced mountain climber would need to bolster himself when he gets to the top of that antenna.

Holy shit that is scary as hell. I get uneasy looking straight down on the second floor of a mall (I'm a pussy, I know lol). But damn........what if one of those handles got rusty or loose? I mean that tower is reallyyyyyyy high up, so the weather must affect it somehow. What if he were to climb that one day and something snapped. Ahhh just thinking about it gives me chills.

At about 1800 feet, parachutes are a waste. They wouldnt bother giving them the liberty of sporting that kind of gear, plus it adds weight.

While I was watching the video, I kept thinking to myself, "How much money would they have to pay me each time I climbed this thing?" At first I was like, ok, maybe for $5k, but then I'm like, hell no, it has to be at least $10k. Which got me thinking, how much would you climb it for each time?

That doesn't really matter. After a certain height if you fall you die anyways.

I don't know, for this guy, this job probably beats being a cubicle jockey day in and day out. People that do this are probably the same guys you knew who were doing insane tree climbs when we were kids. And yeah it probably pays pretty well too. Tradeoffs. Also, imagine how eventually boring this would become if you were climbing say 3 a day. Just becomes mind over matter.

that being said I could not do this lol

and thats probably 5.13d at least on the second one

The tower climb is actually extremely safe for anyone with any climbing experience, it would probably be rated 5.6 max. Once you have some basic climbing strength there's no way you could fall off of it.

It is pretty scary, but I think I would at least try if someone offered me a million to go up and back down...

The thing that would bother me is the wind. It seems like it would be really strong up there, wouldn't it? Crazy :o

I don't think money matters here, the normal human with fear of heights is not capable of doing this, unless you are some kind of silly climber or without natural fear for height.

In history, during poor economic times people have fought over jobs more dangerous than that for much less money (like climbing down a rock face, lighting dynamite, and climbing back up before it blows).

Seems weird to see a video like that TODAY though.

My heart was pumping hard and I was like "are you f'n kidding me?" repeatedly when the dude started the free climbing. At the middle of the video I realised how my hands had sweated during the thrilling moments. I really rarely sweat when I'm sitting. Wow .

I mean, I've done some moderately high climbing (maybe 100 feet) while wearing a harness before, and I didn't have to hook and unhook my gear every few feet. There was just a catching mechanism next to me so if I fell, a gear would lock and I would stop moving. I don't think the technology is that sophisticated, but I can understand why it may not be practical for these guys to use it.

Seriously? Can't they think of a system that involves a safety line to the top? Shouldn't be too hard to run a cable with a few hooks to the top and back down again...

They don't even have parachutes? I mean it probably wouldn't be the best spot to use one, and more to carry, but still a greater chance of survival than without anything...
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

It would slow down the process and they do get tired of having to remove hooks after each interval. And not to mention who carries a parachute at 1800 Feet?

I dunno, don't wanna sound like a wannabe tough guy, but I think I could (psychically, not physically) do that. The climb down would be worse, but going up... after the first fifty or so meters, it's all the same (for me at least).

I do this for a living (Transmission Technologist) and I have to say that this guy is crazy, going up that high free climbing while theres a storm approaching. Like the guy said, theres no quick way down, and if Thunder's going to hit around the area, its going to hit those towers.

Oh and its not a daily basis job, unless you're a tower climbing contractor of course. I climb a tower maybe once every 4-5 month to change a light beacon(so planes don't go crash into your towers), most of the time you're going to be inside the plant fixing/operating or doing maintenance on the transmitters themselve. Towers require little to no maintenance, its basically just a big metal rod(in most case).

Tower overwhelming...

Not sure which would be harder, the climb up or the climb down. If I actually made it to the top and had to get down again, I'd be shaking quite hard. Wow.

I would guess that going down is a lot harder since you actually have to look down the whole time.

What I'm wondering is how those types of towers are constructed near the top. How do they get the steel up to that height to attach it to that tower? Even cranes have limits...

Searched around some, and indeed the pay when you start doing that kind of work is between 15 and 20 dollars an hour. Distugsting pay really. Also the way down is alot harder. On the way up you have better vision, and on the way down you can't always see your next step, you have to "feel" it. When searching around I expected to find some page where it said they where paid millions and millions a year, but they are paid basically fuck all. Working an average 9 hours a day it seems ( on different radio towers) sometimes way higher. And these huuuge towers, they cannot climb unless the weathers tell them to go ahead. Thats one of the security aspects that is put most weight on.

As I mentioned earlier, my friend's acquaintance, who only has to climb towers ~500ft (most towers appear to be 300ft) makes at least 30$/hour. Considering these particular guys climb 17k I'd imagine significantly higher pay for them.

The guy doing push ups in that other video was even more insane although he had a back pack on so I suspect he had some kind of base jumping parashute in it? Would that be possible in such a small bag?

If you want to see so scary freeclimbing go search for Alain Robert or Human Spiderman.

But why isn't the tower built with one of those safety tracks where you just attach a special hook to it and then just move it up and down, with no loss of speed?

btw, 1$/hour is the poverty line limit if I recall right.

Yeah, here they can pay you like 300-350 dollars a month for working 8 hours 5 days a week.. that would be like 2-3 dollars an hour, and that´s the normal salary for a non-qualified job. (of course there are a lot of people employed off-the-books that earn much less).

Surely you need the right mindset to do such a crazy job.

Reminds me of the story of Mohawk indians which have been hired to build high bridges and skyscrapers during the 20th century.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohawk_nation#Mohawk_skyscraper_builders

Mohwaks had the reputation to deal perfectly with dangerous situations like crazy heights.

i bet it isnt clearly as dangerous or scary as it looks. you get a very different perspective when you are actually there. When you only see them use the hook every once in a while it makes you think that the wind isnt really that bad. the guy in the video doesnt look like hes shitting bricks so either its not that bad or he makes it look easy as hell.

if he was really that scared he would always be connected to the tower and unhook/rehook so he always would have some protection. if they only get paid 12-30 dollars an hour, wouldnt it make sense for them to take as much time as possible to make the hours anyway and be as safe as possible?

i bet this is one of those things that once you do it, you think to yourself "oh this wasnt that bad at all". There are some scarier jobs out there tbh.

Oh, ya, their six gajillion mile climb with no safety lines and a 30 pound toolbag strapped to them is probably no big deal, I'm sure you'd ace it first try with no help.

i bet it isnt clearly as dangerous or scary as it looks. you get a very different perspective when you are actually there.

Oh, ya, their six gajillion mile climb with no safety lines and a 30 pound toolbag strapped to them is probably no big deal, I'm sure you'd ace it first try with no help.

its only 178 ft climb and part of it is on a ladder. 30 pounds of gear is nothing too. Trad climbs have a rack that's over 50 pounds and harder to carry imo. these towers were meant for climbing, so there are plenty of hand and foot holds. I'd be more scared of forgetting an important tool than the climb, which after the first couple climbs, would be unnerving.

ya if you forget something you need to climb the whole thing down again :D

The only thing i find scary, that there are really few spots where you can secure yourself.

That appears to be a job for unique people who have no fear of heights. Of course they would have to have climbing experience and all the skill sets required to physically perform such a feat without becoming tired, which would increase their chances of making a mistake, but it seems the mental barrier is the more serious one. Quite frankly, these people seem to be both brave and unusual :3
Perhaps there is a universal, absolute truth. Perhaps it justifies every question. But that's beyond the reach of these small hands.

that was very scary, though these guys are of course used to it now. The first time must be unbelievable.

But I always feel climbing up is much easier (and secure) than going down. To see that would scare the living shit out of me.

I'd probably be able to do this, just for the adrenaline rush. Though I'd take plenty of safety precautions first, and wouldn't do "free climbing," like they did. But I'd definitely want to climb all the way to the top just to be able to brag about that I had done it. Not everyone gets to climb a 1800 foot long tower.

For the FUN !? And on top of that you get some money.

Btw in the video it's said that they "freeclimb" (without safety precautions) with the explanation that it would slow them down immensely if they had to hook and unhook themselves all the time.

Well obviously, he was talking about dying DURING the actual fall, not when you hit the ground....

It's a myth that you die while falling, it's possible to die from a heart attack like hackmed said but you don't ever go so fast your neck breaks or something. I've had a minute and a half of free-fall from 12,000 feet, which is much more than enough time to hit terminal velocity, and I survived no problem.

I have done something similar to this in a job I had... albeit not that tall, only 140 feet up; although, I didn't attach safety lines every several feet, I didn't clip on until I got to the top.

You get used to it after a while... you have to be very deliberate but it becomes normal and doesn't scare you.

A ladder is a ladder.

A lot of those foot holds on that thing aren't even straight. You have to factor in the winds and other things up that high. It's just not the same thing.

with 2 people you can do it safely. It's probably what he did after years of experience and after a while he probably just said 'fuck it, being safe is too slow and started free climbing".

The top climber has 2 hooks attached to him, at he climbs, he always puts one hook into a hole. The guy under him always takes his hook out and climsb himself. Both of them are atached to one another. So if at any time one of them falls, they are secured to eachother and they are straped to something, so they will be safe. If you just start this sort of job, that's probably what you will be doing for quite some time until you get desensitized to the fear of heights. Then it's just boring old world with one hell of a view.

Even if I were to somehow be able to make it up, I would refuse to climb down and have to jump and parachute. I think the climb down would be even scarier. At least going up, you can see the next step to grab/hook. Insane job, I could never do that.

They were climbing the way rock climbers climb mountains, One guy hooks the other guy climbs, then the higher guy hooks and the other guy climbs. No more dangerous than big cliff climbers. in fact probably easier to climb! but still absolutaly crazy. =D

I thought he was done when he first climbed the tower, but no...

He just goes and climbs the pole to the TOP TOP of the tower, without those safety clips everywhere.

I would bet that he makes a fair amount and he probably doesn't have to go up there that often. Probably just a few times a month at the most. I freaked out just watching the video though, my palms are sweaty and my legs feel weak lol.

I was literally whimpering, gasping, and tearing up while watching that. I can't count how many times I thought, "Wtf he's actually climbing onto this next part?" The man must have balls of steel.

I feel like the pseudo-ladder up the red antennae is particularly unsafe. It has small circular protuberances on the sides of the handlebars in order for the safety clip to catch on them, but they're so thin and flimsy looking I can just imagine wind and body weight generating enough force to make the safety clip snap them.

EDIT: Erroneous usage.

I don't think he can parachute down. The height is small it would be like jumping with an umbrella from the roof of a house also the parachute could get stuck on the tower...

I bet a chimp would solo that for a couple of bananas. xD

After what I've heard, you'd at least lose the bet on the money part. I read somewhere that those guys don't make more than 35k in the first year of work. Later they get more, but it seems like a normal job is the better option

1763 feet? At that altitude the wind can be about x1.5 or x2 as fast as on the ground. So yeah on a windy day that can probably be a significant threat. You can get like 20 knots of wind on windy days which is something like 36 km/h? On the ground. I'm guessing (roughly ofc) that up there wind speed can get up to 50 or 60 km/h. Idk what that is in mph.

QQ, that's a nice pair o' balls he has there.

I think that with proper video editing you could scare the shit out of people by editing in a slip and a free fall. :p

Edit, the video apparently scared some people really hard which is interesting. This video didn't do that to me (sure I got a little nervous) but I remember actually getting really disturbed in kill bill when the she's buried in a coffin underground. Phobia is interesting. ^_^

I used to do rock climbing, but this stuff is way safer, as long as nothing breaks, you are fine. Wind or lightning can be minimized by good planning and you are actually supposed to be able to climb up there, as opposed to mountains and rocks That means that you never have to risk and you are always touching the structure with 3 limbs, which is the safe way to climb.

Ehhh my palms got sweaty just watching that but it really doesn't look much harder than climbing a ladder or doing some shuffling on a ledge....only it's a lot higher up. So if the height doesn't really scare you and you're physically fit don't think it should be much of a problem.

But man, those handrungs look really flimsy. The movie doesn't show what they actually fix though. Imagine getting all the way up there, then accidentally dropping your pliers or your wrench or something LOL!

LOL. They likely have multiple pairs of everything for that same reason. Assuming your pliers you just dropped didn't F up some dish down below you.

I have a fear of heights so I had to force myself to watch that whole thing. I was groaning half the time and going. OH JESUS NO. NO WAY.

Except the guy climbing the tower wasnt free solo climbing. He was climbing with a partner, each hooking in while the other climbed. Way easier to climb than a 5.10... besides 5.1 is like a gentle slope.... LOL

It looks scary at first but a few times in you get used to it.

I used to do tower construction and putting up ellis shores on the edge of a 56 story tower would make my legs shake. Harness or not, the first 3 or 4 times is scary as hell.

Eventually you come to realize that a 56 story fall is the same as a 5 story fall and you don't even trip.

It's the same for bomb technician and many other jobs. Nothing special here.

Good point actually. In fact bomb disposal is way crazier than this.

It's just that this is visually impressive.

I wager the risks involved in some other jobs such as bomb disposal are much higher but they are invisible so you wouldn't be sweating just watching it. Funny how that works.

I've actually never ever read a story about someone plummeting to their deaths from a tower. You'd of thought something that "shocking" would be good news ?

Cell Phone Tower Worker: Deadliest Job in America
Jul 8, 2008 7:02:29 PM

According to a story in this week's RCR Wireless News, the deadliest job in America is constructing, upgrading, and repairing cell phone towers (which can be hundreds of feet tall). The fatality rate for cell phone tower workers is currently 183.6 deaths per 100,000 workers, making it more dangerous than other risky jobs such as ranching, fishing, logging, and ironworking.

Five tower workers died during one 12-day span earlier this year alone. 18 tower workers died on the job in 2006. An investigation into the rise in fatalities in this industry has yet to trace the increase to any specific cause.

Looked like the guy below had a parachute, so doesn't seem as unsafe.

Could be wrong though.

That source is from a Personal Injury Lawyer's website and when you click on the link to the 'article' it just takes you to the Yahoo news home page. More reputable sources do not specifically discuss this as one of the most dangerous jobs. Fishing, logging, and airline pilots are occupations with more than 50/100,000 being killed on the job.

Edit: This is still pants-shittingly scary by the way.

You know, in the beginning when he's inside the tower climbing ladders I just went "eh, that's not so bad", but then when he goes on the outside I changed my mind. Good thing they have on safety helmets, that should come in handy.

yeah, pretty much this exactly.

I was thinking, "doesn't look so scary, I've climbed on stuff more dangerous than that." and then he steps onto the exposed rungs and then it gets real.

I'm not afraid of heights at all, and this whole thing looks like it would be fun (and a good work out) until he started one-stepping up the pole near the end. GTFO with that. One slip and there's nothing to grab = you're toast. this guy has mondo nuts to be doing that. And imagine the guy below him. If the dude above falls, he could take him with him (>.<)

Sweaty palms here.

That was insane. There are just so many things that could go wrong there...
With proper security measures, I'd do it. Otherwise, not even for all the money in the world.

The only thing that would make me climb that would be a horde of zombies. Although I don't know, They match kinda evenly on my sissynes scale.
