Hey, I'm by no means connected with the maker(s) of Zest, just wanted to give a shout for the best thing a web browser has to offer to your mind. If this thread breaks any rules delete it, but don't ban me please.

http://zestriddle.ovh.org/

It's NotPron kind of a riddle but with a really outstanding, morbid atmosphere. It will get you right at the beginning (still many get stuck on first 3 and never proceed :<). First read http://zestriddle.ovh.org/hints.htm, then if you have trouble (you WILL have trouble) go to the english official forum for hint threads. Riddles are meant to be hard, the base (72 of them) took me 3 years to finish (had like year long breaks though :p), but if you're really smart 1-3 months could be enough. Be careful, because if you get sucked in you won't be able to think about anything but the damn riddle all day (hah, a day...) long.

More general info: http://zestriddle.ovh.org/wai.htm (all the links are on the main site but I suppose it looks better if I post them ^^).

You can pm me for hints if you like.

I'm on level two and incredibly confused.

On September 06 2010 06:02 Beef Noodles wrote:

It tells you on the hints page.

First page looks like this http://zestriddle.ovh.org/zest_riddle/one.htm

The "one" part in that link is the answer. So if you think the answer is sausages change it to sausages like this:

http://zestriddle.ovh.org/zest_riddle/sausages.htm

If it takes you to the next riddle instead of an error page you did it right

That's what I think anyway.. but honestly I have no idea how I got the answer from the picture and the text it was more of a guess really and now that I'm on the second one (I think I am anyway) I am super confused.

I think someone has spoiled the second one already in this thread but I don't see how you got that answer either :o

Maybe we can have a spoilered discussion or start a new thread to discuss each level or just do that openly here?

What is this, viral marketing for a Nine Inch Nails release? Some of the adresses are very alike to album / song names, and the flip image has exact lyrics.

Pretty cool in any case though.

Edit; Well, close to exact lyrics, in any case.

Edit edit:

Something about the blue being, white being not, which points towards the blue line fields on the image contains parts of the puzzle, while white does not. Considering the mirror.htm says mirrors lie, I've tried using both blue as guide to find words and white as guide to find words, but i find nothing that makes sense, straight-forward or reversed.

Does the green G in the reflection hold signifcance? I've tried using the words in that area straight foward and reverse, and only as parts of white / blue, to no effect.

I havent found the solution yet, but this seems pretty significant.

I'm on the same track I drew lines like columns where the white/blue is in the picture and also figured the green letter has significance, though it doesn't seem to fit with the 'real' image below. And yeah, haven't really been able to figure anything out.

I think since the first picture was named reflection backwards, and the answer turned out to by rorrim i.e. written backwards, it would make sense if whatever word we're searching for is in the format of "rimror - mirror" which is the word of the second picture.

maybe you figured it out by now? had to do some studying.

If you edit the image abit it says " OMG! Is there a face screaming?"
And then if you flip it around some more it says "I can still hear you even so far away..."
I still haven't figured out what to type though.

The author is a NIN fan, you will see other bands references as well. I think level 5 is the first brick wall you meet, another one at 12 and then it gets only worse . For levels discussion (spoiler free) go to official forums, years of modded posts there (actually if you are polish there is also a polish official forum, imo more subtle hints over there).

Grats for those who have discovered lvl 0, there are many other bonus levels (negative gogo). Reading your discussion I got reminded how good it was, think I will get back and try to find Exodus (72-101 riddles) after a year long break.

Other interesting one is http://inwardhellix.net/ (made by a zest fan, considered to be a little harder). I also liked "frvade" riddle but it isn't up anymore :<.

You sound pretty familiar with the makers, are you by any chance one of them? If you are, nice job with the thing. Good composition between audio and graphics to create atmosphere.

The general text fonts and excessive use of (...) does annoy me at times though. =P

the green letter has nothing to do with the answer

flip letters that are under the blue columns, and leave the letters under the white columns normal

won't use the letters from all the words

Grrrr. 5 > I've put it in paint and flipped it this way and that and highlighted it to make it 'blue', drew lines that divide out the blue columns of it...

=.=

Edit: overthought it too hard.

Guessed 6 correctly but want to know how I get to that conclusion.

I went through this game before cheating...it's absolute waste of time. So many of the answers are completely obscure, trivial, and near-impossible to guess through the game.

I never liked zest. Many of the later riddles are too obscure and vague to figure out without too much help or time. Dracula's riddle is in my opinion the best online riddle out there.

it's no where near irrelevant, it's been spoilered already in the thread. if you think that's obscure, i don't think you're going to like where this site is headed. i got pretty into notpr0n back in the day, and I've gotta say that shit starts to get crazy obscure later on.

Check the source.

+ Show Spoiler +
I'm on the same track I drew lines like columns where the white/blue is in the picture and also figured the green letter has significance, though it doesn't seem to fit with the 'real' image below. And yeah, haven't really been able to figure anything out.

I think since the first picture was named reflection backwards, and the answer turned out to by rorrim i.e. written backwards, it would make sense if whatever word we're searching for is in the format of "rimror - mirror" which is the word of the second picture.

maybe you figured it out by now? had to do some studying.

the green letter has nothing to do with the answer

flip letters that are under the blue columns, and leave the letters under the white columns normal

won't use the letters from all the words

tip for 5b

if you still cant get it the first word made using this method is + Show Spoiler +

No. That's Easter egg I think. The answer has been repeatedly stated in this thread so you might wish to check it out if you are truly stuck. And if you don't figure it out even after that... :D

For number twelve you have to look at her story. Think about what a story is written down in (type of file, think simple) and think about who it's talking about (herstory) Maybe too big of a hint.

OK so I figured out6(6)... But only by backtracking from the answer, which I googled. And just as I thought, having a swedish keyboard was the problem. Or rather, the maker of this riddle assuming the whole world uses the same keyboard layout was the problem. I want to push him down an endless staircase.

There was a riddle website I had years ago when there was no need for paint/photoshop

It was just a line or a picture and you could answer the riddle like that. Sometimes the page source had information.

Anyone know that one? IMO it was really good

5b answer was absolutely retarded. The pattern has almost nothing to do with the information given in the riddle.

I love how these "riddles" have absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. I really wish there was one of these that was actually based on logical deduction and not finding out what they don't tell you. The "clues" are always just abstract interpretations of information the author has withheld from you, and if you get the correct answer all you've proven is you've guessed the authors interpretation of the withheld information correctly. It's not like there is a complex pattern to figure out, the pattern itself is extremely simple. The problem is that he doesn't give you nearly enough information to formulate the correct pattern without guessing between multiple patterns, all of which could follow from the information given.

They don't really deserve to be called riddles imo. They're more like rather silly puzzles where you try to guess what the maker was high on when he thought up the question. Also I don't get wading through all the gunk and source code to find an mp3 that references a song title that references a poem containing the original question. Oh and don't forget the perennial favorite, increasing the fucking contrast/lighting using an image editor.

I'm not against puzzles where getting there is half the fun, but when it's all you have to offer, it just shows lack of originality and creativity. If your riddle is puzzling and entertaining and mystifying why do you want people to dig for it? Just post it in plain text and let it speak for itself.

White is read straight forward, blue is read backwards. You only read the topmost letters, and voila.

Yea, that's not what I figured out from the hints given, but I did figure it out eventually by using my NIN knowledge and trying to reverse / straight parts of the text over time.

If you were to write down all the words and then use the "blue is mirror white is not" or w/e then you would flip all the letters under blue and then have all the letters "fall down" to the bottom. The green S at the top shows you that that's what you're supposed to do.

Great post and I 100% agree.

The riddle website I am looking for is exactly how you explained a good riddle. It just had a line or a picture that you had to figure out, sometimes you had to look in the page source for additional hints, but there sure as well as no image editing or anything.

It was really popular, I remember doing it probably 2 years back, and IIRC, there was 2 parts to it. One went from 1-50 and the other 1-99, so it was surely going to keep you busy for awhile.

This zestriddle has a lot of red herrings which makes it annoying as hell. You get several different clues that lead you into different directions, and its a matter of testing out all the possibilities for all the different clues before you FINALLY get the answer. I think it was question 4 which the picture was a word puzzle, if you read the text and looked in the page source, it made you think about The Wizard of Oz, then it had "THINGs in OZ" so you think about clues with THING OZ. Then you look at the word puzzle and there are bunch of more clues there.

lol

Well, intelligence includes abstract thought, there is no information withheld, getting it just requires some abstract analysis(sometimes logical deduction is just enough though), a thing computers can't do so far and that's why we haven't heard of artificial INTELLIGENCE. If you look at artists, they give away "abstract interpretations of information" all the time and you can't bash them for that, literature experts excel in "guessing the authors interpretation", which is an act that requires a lot of intelligence if you want to do it well. When you're doing the riddle it's a similar thing, but you get a 100% confirmation when you're on the right track, literature guys would kill for that .

I think you miss that the right pattern you've got to follow is always the most elegant and is matching the clues. It's not like you try ten different things and one of them just fits and gets you through. When you're on the right way you know it's good long way before you type in the answer. You also say that the patterns are simple, but people find them simple only just right after they solve the riddle. When they get it after long hours, it's almost always the "HOW COME I HAD NOT GOTTEN THIS EARLIER, IT'S SO CLEAR NOW!", rather than "Oh, this answer seems to match, but previous ones were as good." you suggest.

My response above could fit here as well, but I'd like to add that image editing stuff isnt THAT frequent after all and many people find doing it rewarding (it isn't anything a casual computer user with brief wikipedia training couldn't do). Additionally, those things like story text even though at times misleading add this dark mood to the game which most(including me) zesters love, still I understand that some might like just a treat for the mind not the soul . REAL red herrings happen less frequently and in the end they're just red herrings, it finally gets obvious that it's not the way to go. BTW, the word puzzle one, No. 3 is a bad example, it's one of the most straightforward ones(don't know if you've finished it).

Every single one of these riddle websites I've found all focus around image editing or googling (I have absolutely no idea how the google one works)

I got to like level 40 on this about 2 years ago and I gave up because it started getting ridiculous and so abstract. It's fun but after a while you'll see how silly it gets IMO. Anyway gl.

In fact, just found my old answer list, I can provide answers but not hints as I didn't right down my thought processes. I originally got to 53. Might try getting to 73 where exodus starts.

Don't take it to seriously and you can have a lot of fun with it.

I have 1 question about the number 5 riddle
+ Show Spoiler +
How was I even supposed to know the answer? I can read the "Pi, sick, drama, mirror on the mirror image but it leads nowhere. The title "my reflection" doesn't really help too. The text at bottom is written backwards but the letters are not reversed, which means absolutely nothing. "Dirty... " in source code doesn't seem to help either. I was eventually able to guess it by trying about 10 words which seemed to make sense. What is the supposed train of thought behind the correct answer?

To be honest, I took a couple attempts before I had the right one too but it does make sense. First of all I checked the mirror for clues and only really noticed the word mirror. Then you get a "false" page saying mirrors are a lie. The theme of riddle 5 seems to be backwards/mirrored so the answer kind of makes sense. Also the clue in the sourcecode "Dirty" refers to the mirror aswell. Its 5b that didn't make sense to me at all...
