Ok about 3 years ago i noticed a rather severe ringing in the ears, sense that day it has consumed almost every moment of my life. It has destroyed a relationship becuase im apathetic and angry now
I havent been able to sleep unaided in... forever. It creates alot of stress im redline all day, and stress takes a huge toll on you believe me, i feel like shit. And basically im just taking a shot in the dark wondering if anyone with a similar problem or just some knowledge i dont have has some sort of relief. Anything at all really, Doctors offer nothing but sucking my bank account dry
When no other music/sound is playing i just hear a decently high pitch. Try listening to music while going to bed to see if you don't need sleep pills.
I have it too. It's called tinnitus man. The ringing gets louder the less noise that there is. And it becomes unnoticable when I'm really focused on something. Mine sound like crickets, except its a steady pitch.
will never go away. had it for a decade, doesn't even bother me anymore. Mine's just a very high pitched constant tone though, I guess it could be worse
EDIT: tinnitus is a good reason to avoid blasting music at max volume. I hate it when I am riding in some jerk's car and her radio is blaring. She'll turn it down for a bit but then a song she likes comes on and VOLUME++++. So fucking rude. I'd prefer it if my tinnitus didn't get worse. Better to not get it in the first place
I heard of a form of therapy where they play the ringing pitch at you in a sound booth and eventually train your brain to automatically tune it out. Definitely something done by an Audiologist though. You sure doctors can't help you? Last I heard this form of therapy was being touted as an outright cure for your problem.

I've had ringing in my ear for over a year now. The doctor just said it's probably middle ear problem. I had surgery on my ears and that didn't help. I use little white noise thing i bought at walmart to sleep.
Sometime i can just ignore it and it almost seems to go away. I can't believe the ringing isn't white noise to you after 3 years.

No more making ppl feel better..sry
At least you have your self-respect!
And if you had small ears and ringing in the penis you'd probably have super model girlfriends.
OP, do you know if the ringing in your ears has a physical or neurological cause btw? My doctor recently recommended me a neurologist and I'm going to go see him soon. He told me that I could take medication to lessen the noise. But if it has too many side effects then I'll just live with it. It is pretty damn annoying.
I've had high pitched ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember. It isn't very consistent though and usually only hear it whens it's quiet and I'm not focused on anything like when I'm sitting on the toilet. It isn't very loud and I don't notice it very often so I guess that's why it doesn't bother me at all. I never knew other people had this but it isn't something I have ever thought about much.

How contributing... Anyways @ OP, how old are you? What kind of doctor did you visit?
It's a symptom of hearing loss. I've had it in both my ears for 2 years, though both unrelated causes - one of them I fucked up when cleaning, the other from listening to loud music with headphones.
After a while, though, I just stopped noticing the ringing, though it's always there. I can understand how it would get life-changing if you couldn't. I can't help other than see your doctor, that's how I worked out my tinnitus was a symptom of something serious. Self diagnosis is the devil.
I've had ringing in my ears after concerts that keeps me up. It's hell.
And I've had chronic insomnia for years on end, not related to ringing. But- I can mentally couple the 2 and try to imagine- and its not a happy picture.
Acupuncture. Meditation... would be my first line. Even Chiropractors.
Last line would be medication and even surgery.
GL my man and much luv.
edit: It's not ALWAYS hearing loss. It can sometimes just be ringing because of other unknown biological causes. Yes, hearing loss can be ringing. It's the most common. But... ringing is not always hearing loss.

Ringing for 3 years is very likely to be hearing loss. Don't trust me though, trust your doctor.
My father has had the same for a couple of years now, and it's the same with 2 other people in my family.
I don't remember the specifics, it can be a different cause then what he has, but anyway.
Yes he suffered a lot from it, couldn't sleep, was tired during the day while the noise continued and so on.
After visiting the doctor and after a while he got these sort of hearing aids, but what they actually did was make noise at the same frequency as he heard, cancelling it out.
And later on he also had to go into one of those pressure chambers like they use for divers.
And now he doesn't hear it anymore even without those "hearing aids"
But anyway, best advice that I can give you, go to the doctor, because it can have multiple causes.
In the best case if it isn't that serious they can find a way to hopefully stop it
If it is just every now and again it might be Tinnitus. This occurs kind of like white noise when you are trying to go to sleep or in quiet environments. If you don't notice it in environments where noise is occurring it is probably something else.
I've had tinnitus for a while (metal fan, go figure) but it never really troubled me that much. I suppose it can be more severe for some, but mine is pretty loud if there's no other sound around me. I sleep with music on nowadays though, which nullifies it.
I also have ringing in my ears but it comes and goes. I've since stopped listening to loud music and purchased a very good pair of ear plugs. The best place to buy a pair of ear plugs is at a music store/website. Tinnitus is a very serious problem for people in bands, drum corps, and anyone that listens to loud music constantly. You should check out http://www.hearos.com or go to your local music store.

it doesn't, actually, but the fact that you said that does.
www.rainymood.com < try this? heard white noise and stuff helps tinnitus. i dont have it myself but once i listened to rainymood while taking a nap.. was really relaxing
www.simplynoise.com - helped me out lots of times when sound was an issue in my life. Use headphones or if home alone raise the volume to max.
As for the stress - I don't know about your situation specifically. You should find a therapist who can help you deal with it. Other then that - Stay away from alcohol, coffee, tea and high-sugar food (try instead to eat a high fat diet). All of this lowers the body's stresshormone production. I dont know if it will help with the stress you have, but at least you'll eliminated some causes of stress from your life. Sorry to hear about your situation though - I hope you find a way back to enjoying life

in short, yes. That's probably the leading cause. Jet engines and guns (and no hearing protection) are bad too (and there are some non noise related causes)

Wow thanks man, I don't have tinnitus but I absolutely love the sound of rain and thunder. Very relaxing for me
Just as a warning, for some of those who seem to be surprised, those tiny earphones with IPods, IPhones and ITouches etc (any MP3 Players), if loud, are one of the best ways to get the ringing.
I've heard the very direct, loud and wide ranging sound is actually on par with burst noise like Gunshots and car accidents.

That's a quality response.
You should be able to get a doctor to at least properly identify the problem and its cause relatively cheaply, either way it's worth the money if it's causing you this much distress and you'll be in a much better position to start thinking about what to do next.

Of course you can use them, just don't push it.
This is true. The compression of MP3 files, which discard certain frequencies and dynamic range values (volume), result in us turning up the volume of whatever we're listening to because it's quieter and that stuff just ISN'T there (as a result of the compression). That, combined with the direct nature of the earbuds (they are RIGHT there in your ear) can cause long term damage to the ear. Another factor is that usually people listen to them on the street, in a bus, or on a plane, which are all locations with very high background noise. In order for us to hear our music and drown this out, we turn it up even MORE. This is why I only listen on actual headphones or on speakers (I'm going into professional audio so I do all I can to save my ears).
Also: I don't know why more people don't do this, but covering your ears during a fire alarm or when an emergency vehicle goes right by actually helps. Every bit counts, you only get one pair of ears!

I bet its tinnitus, my friend has it pretty bad from visiting too many metal concerts. He says he just learned to live with it and apparently listening to soothing music and sounds help him get sleep much better. Just enough to cover the tinnitus. I have this slight high pitched noise in my ears too but i can only notice it if i concentrate on it.

its annoying at first but you get used to it.
It certainly is...Im trying to watch a movie with alot of silent scenes and it fucking suks T.T. Is this curable?
I have tinnitus but its not from listening to loud music or anything, I have meniere's disease which I didn't treat for a few years and now I have hearing loss. If anyone in this thread gets vertigo AND hearing loss (usually in one ear) go see an ENT and get it checked. Usually if you diagnose it early on you can manage it through diet and not lose any hearing, you can't do caffeine, and salt though =/.
Janet Travell, JFK's Doctor used it to cure his back pain. Course then he drove around in a convertable while a crazy guy was around but that porbably won't happen to you.
What what I know about it look into your Sternocleidomastoid (front neck muscle from your sternum to your mastoid behind your ear
Also there has been a lot of progress trying to convince doctors that it exists. The only issue really is its mostly Massage Therapists who know about it, who doctors tend not to trust.
I have it, I just always listen to music or have the TV on in the background when I'm doing something. I don't have to be watching it, but the sound of the TV is less distracting than the Tinnitus

Try sticking your thumb in your mouth and holding it against the muscle that slackens as you close your mouth. Press against the masseter with your thumb and forfinger (pointer outside of your mouth) and feel around for two spots that are really tender towards the bottom and top of the muscle. Pinch behind the spot and pull towards the front of your mouth. It should hurt like a motherfucker (I don't have ringing and it just hurt like a motherfucker to give you an idea.) Work that in one direction for about sixty seconds with pressure at a pain level of like 7 on the scale 1-10. Do it like six times a day
If your jaw relaxes after a few days then buy the book and get educated
