Tabs are now on top by default on Windows only - OSX and Linux will be changing when the theme has been modified to support the change.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7 the menu bar has been replaced with the Firefox button.
You can search for and switch to already open tabs in the Smart Location Bar
New Addons Manager and extension management API (UI will be changed before final release)
Significant API improvements are available for JS-ctypes, a foreign function interface for extensions.
The stop and reload buttons have been merged into a single button on Windows, Mac and Linux.
The Bookmarks Toolbar has been replaced with a Bookmarks Button by default (you can switch it back if you'd like).
Crash protection for Windows, Linux, and Mac when there is a crash in the Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins.
CSS Transitions are partially supported.
Full WebGL support is included but disabled by default at this time.
Core Animation rendering model for plugins on Mac OS X. Plugins which also support this rendering model can now draw faster and more efficiently.
Native support for the HD HTML5 WebM video format.
An experimental Direct2D rendering backend is available on Windows, turned off by default.
Web developers can use Websockets for a low complexity, low latency, bidirectional communications API.
Web developers can update the URL field without reloading the page using HTML History APIs.
More responsive page rendering using lazy frame construction.
Link history lookup is done asynchronously to provide better responsiveness during pageload.
CSS :visited selectors have been changed to block websites from being able to check a user's browsing history.
New HTML5 parser.
Support for more HTML5 form controls.
To me it feels snappier (though this is by no means a scientific observation)
Although I have not tried all of my add-ons yet, most work flawlessly. Unfortunately most of these add-ons are disabled by default, but can be forced to install by downloading the Add-On Compatability Reporter which obviously lets you report compatibility to the Add-On developers.

I hear this about every update for every browser and it's never true D:

I like it better than Chrome, yes. Firefox with the Ad Block Plus add-on, which stops adds from loading rather than just hiding them, makes pages load faster than chrome.
Obviously is disable Ad Block on sites I want to support, like TL.
I have been waiting for this for like ever! I'm a bit afraid to try out a beta version of it, I'll wait until the full version. I'm more than satisfied with FF3
Messing around with it. I like it. Looks pretty nice and very easy to use (because I fail with all things related to computers). I'm enjoying it so far. ABP seems to be working. Atleast I haven't noticed anything not working yet.
Don't think this is enough to make me switch back from Chrome.
I got tired of the clunkiness of Firefox long ago (I don't care about adbox plus, and the bazillion addons. Ads don't bother me at all and I prefer absolutely speed > clunky addons), and once I switched to Chrome I haven't looked back.
Been using it for a couple of hours, and there is promise. I like the chrome-y feel to it and it still has most of my add-ons. I'm liking its integration with Windows 7 also, with the tabs and all.
Damn this is sexy. I switched to Chrome like 2 months ago because I was fed up with FF, but this might convince me to switch back; providing most of my add-ons become compatible with FF4 soon after it's fully released.
Just installed. I've been using Firefox since it was Firebird and though I've tried other browsers in between I've always quickly switched back. ^^ Probably my favourite FOSS application.
How is it possible that nobody made a proper Adblocker for Chrome (the existing ones only hide the ads once they're downloaded). Chromium is open source, there should be a way to make a good one.

Ad blocking doesn't have to be program specific. You can have ad blocking without installing a program at all. When will people learn about the host file... http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Probably you can export the bookmarks into an HTML file through the bookmark manager and then import it in the beta. Unless there is some bookmark syncing thing.

As long as I don't press F11 for fullscreen, yeah o_o Hm, it resizes the window when I press it back from fullscreen. That could get annoying...
im interested in how well it manages pop-ups? I know there are several add-ons, but the slowdown was pretty bad when i used them: add-block, noscript m.m.
That was the main reason I have been using Chrome.
However i use several sites using plug-ins and those keeps crashing my Chrome browser, so i'm ready to shift back to firefox.

hum wonder why, could it be that like most sites google get's their money though ads, if you block them before the load site gets jack shit even less then not clicking ads :D just block though hosts file then it can even block iccup ads, although it lacks the detect frame crap to guess what is an ad if the site isn't on the list already.

No it is absolutely horrible for people with slow computers since it demands like 3 times the CPU power, hopefully they make it better in the future.
whats the deal with Chrome? its good that its lightweight...but thats not what im looking for in a browser...i want useful add-ons. Firefox has so many add-ons that i couldnt live without that ive never even tried Chrome on the basis that there was no way in my mind that Chrome would have the specific add-ons//scripts that i want.
just how exhaustive is Chrome's add-ons//features list?
I don't know why, but I just can't adjust to the new Firefox. I think it's because the Bookmarks tab is a bit larger in height. Not sure really. Still can't figure if I like tabs to be on top or below. I made this comparison for Croatian Tribal Wars forum, but might as well put it here.
Although the screenshots show that there is no grey bar at the bottom of the Firefox 4, it's still there, must be something with my software for taking screenshots, probably removes it somehow. Not sure.
Quality of the screen is not that great, but it's just for a quick comparison. I think I'll stick with 3.6 until most of my add ons are adjusted for 4.0

I guess that you also prefer Total Annihilation over Starcraft?? The thing is, chrome is so much faster and so much less obstructing that when you have used it for a little while going back to FF feels like taking a walk with an elephant on your back. It is good that FF understood that the chrome way is the only way just like opera already had so they are now releasing their own version of the ultra fast, ultra slick browsers.
Personally there were a few things I didn't like with chrome but I just couldn't get myself to use any other browser till opera released their latest, and now I might even switch to the new FF since it is made with the same concepts as chrome.
Edit: seems like they didn't slim it down, hope that it is at least as fast...
yeah but dude...youre not addressing what im saying here. im saying i dont care how lightweight Chrome is. i just want ADD-ONS
i use some Greasemonkey Script called "lookitup" and some add-ons like "firebug" and "down-them-all" etc... and i wouldnt even consider leaving Firefox if these perks are not available on those other browsers.

Most of FF's most popular add-ons have been remade for Chrome, I believe.

i dont use addons, no need for them. This looks like a Chrome knockoff...not surprising considering it's been eating the market share and when the OS is out...welll they are prolly screwed. Not bad though, if there wasn't Chrome i woulda started using Firefox with this design.

I don't want add ons, most of the time. That's why I use chrome, among other reasons.
my fave add-on is called "lookitup2" which is a script that uses the Greasemonkey firefox add-on.

I'm using the linux version and it appears this is a windows only thing. Then again, we don't have the orange FF button. We still have the File,Edit, etc
Been waiting for this to get released for sometime now. I've been using the Minefield builds for awhile now. I love the new integration with Windows 7 as well as the right click > open in new tab. You'd be surprise at how useful that is when you don't have a real mouse to use the middle click (laptop touchpad only goes so far)
Also I have the minimize, maximize, and close buttons for me with the menu bar hidden: + Show Spoiler [Screenshot] +

Chrome and Safari are still faster, but I like Firefox more. If your machine is slower or older, I'd use Chrome, but otherwise, Firefox is my favorite browser.
I really like what they've done with the overall design of the browser. It seems like they want to make browsing a "new experience". Which I completely like..

I always wondered the same thing!
I know that a few years ago google was paying mozilla 50 something million dollars to make that little search bar in the upright search through google by default. That deal made up like 85% of their revenue. Probably the terms are even better for firefox these days with it's higher market share.
I have no idea how other browsers make money, or why it was even useful for microsoft to kill netscape way back in the 90s.

After I was reading this thread and reopened it, suddenly everything was way different. Opened from the same shortcut both times, so I dunno if I'm just blind or what.
I'm just too attached to my tab-splitting* to go back to FF, at this point.

Yeah.. I am in the same boat as most of the people here... Just switched to chrome, Ill wait for the official release of firefox 4 before switching again
I switched from firefox about 4-5 months ago when I finally got fed up with so many crashes and bulkiness, chrome was nice and sleek, helped a lot that it had AD Blocker as well, but lately chrome has been pretty shit too...
I like the new FF design, its pretty similar to chrome's but thats what makes it sleek now as oppsed to bulky before.
Also will confirm that the minimize/maximize/close only work with default FF theme
How's the memory usage compared to 3.x? I switched over to Chrome because they ported AdBlock from FF and it wasn't as much of a memory hog. I do miss NoScript, though.
soooo how come i need to put any character for my favorite website description in the bookmark toolbar? for 3.6 you didn't need to have any. Now in 4 you have to atleast have a space or else it will show the whole url.
I don't really understand why you all switched to chrome. It just divides the user base leading to less addons overall. Firefox and chrome are just as fast as each other after a week of caching data. Chrome seemed to slow down considerably for me as it picked up more data. I think I tested this on numion, a site that shows you how long it takes to fully load a page, and posted my results in TL's first chrome thread.
Many of the functionalities people like are in firefox's addons because without a doubt, firefox has the best designed, and most numerous addons. They have some for mouse gestures too, for the guy above talking about Opera's mouse gestures. Forgot to mention, firefox has themes that can make it look sleek too. It has private browsing built in, and numerous addons that show your most visited sites in new tabs.
i use ff just because i love tabkit (vertical tab tree), so new version of ff just means i cant use the addon 8( ff4 looks cool on win7, but im downgrading until i get my vertical tabs =P.
edit: awww cant minimize clicking on the win7 bar.. >< thats horrible. =/ bye ff4
Been using it for some time now, seems good so far.
After installing be careful to disable themes / addons that could cause problems. Many ppl in this thread some to have visual glitches / missing icons (had it too) because the FF beta uses the settings of the existing FF installation.
I'm very happy with the design changes. The default design of 3.6 is just HORRIBLE. But luckily there were addons for aero glass effect and good themes to make it look better.
Things I noticed I'm missing: - There's seems to be no convenient way to reopen accidentally closed tabs. - New tab icon next to the newest tab, like in IE8 or Chrome

No, I'm talking about the new tab button that you can put by the home button, refresh button ect
TBH firefox 4 has alot of little problems that i don't like this that I don't like. Good thing its the beta.
Try opening the Customize menu and moving the already existing New Tab button. It let me move it about the toolbars even though the icon itself doesn't show up in the menu. I have no idea if there's a way to place it somewhere while keeping the original in its old location like in previous versions, but I also haven't tried disabling anything that still appears to work well enough.

press alt+v to go the view bar, then go to toolbars, make sure the "menu bar" is checked, then go down to "customize", and drag "new window" wherever you want. The lack of the menu bar as a default is gonna mess with a lot of newbies. To access it without menu bar checked press alt+f

You can start your normal Firefox Installation and change it to the default theme. When starting the Beta then it will also use the default theme.
You could also install the add-on compatibility reporter add-on and enable it even though it shows as incompatible.

That depends on what you were disappointed with and if they fixed in FF4.
You'll have to elaborate on that.
my disappointment was it took me a few mins to set up firefox then firefox would be all memory leaky on my and crash at random moments after a like hour of heavy use or in 3 hours or w.e
Works great, no issues with memory so far like Opera has. Everything is really smooth for me, not 1 bug. Didn't try different themes, imo need to wait until the beta is over.

I haven't experienced anything like this while using firefox, you must have had something running in the background.

It was a pretty common issue with FF, as I recall. Always heard stories of it being fixed, only to have it rear its head again.
For those of you who are using FF4 on win7 (and vista I would assume), I found some cool code on another site that merges the menu and tab bars into one so there isn't all this dead space above your tabs. Save it as userChrome.css and save it in the chrome folder in your Firefox profile folder (type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into the search bar in the start menu)

For those like me that used to have the problem with Firefox taking up almost 100 % of the cpu power when watching streams and such shit, seems to work much better in this beta version. It also takes up much less memory, not adding up like it could do at times.

Good. That was the main reason I switched to Chrome... But my addons still don't work with FF4 so I'm gonna wait.
Firefox never had the memory leak problems in my experience until I actually ADDED the addons. I'd let it run for days just to experiment and the memory usage would stay low. Just food for thought, as people should be more careful to observe their add-ons and not entirely blame the browser. (Though it is kind of the browser's fault for not monitoring the memory usage of specific add-ons.)
I was actually having a problem with youtube videos for the longest, and strangely.. when I removed only the google toolbar, everything began working perfectly again.
I think the new firefox layout is prettier than Chrome's.

But purely out of the feeling I got, it's pretty fast and overall good.
Aren't these benchmarking tests biased because they test things that aren't on normal websites and weight them more heavily? In addition, most benchmarking sites show when a page has finished loading. Since you can change the settings to make it so a site shows things right when it loads them, you aren't really slowed down at all regardless of which browser you use because in one second enough of the page will have loaded for you to be able to use it in any browser.
My only problem with Firefox currently is it seems to hog a lot of memory with multiple tabs open (understandably) but doesn't slow back down after closing said tabs. I have found myself having to reboot because of it.
For me the biggest issue with Firefox is that, under Mac OS at least, it takes an age to open, and since this new beta it now lists itself twice in my dock, but closing either one kills both. It just means that the whole thing is a bit of unnecessary clutter

Annoying yes, but it will dissapear in the next beta.

Wow This is really useful. I really think this should be the standard. One of the advantages is that when you maximize the window you can just navigate with your mouse up and only have to position your mouse horizontally to select the tabs. Because you can't go any higher you don't have to be accurate vertically.
Spurred by the other benchmarks, I did my own. Weird to see the difference in browsers across Windows and Mac OS, but it looks like Chrome is the fastest. I'm sticking with Safari for the moment though, because Chrome has a horrible tendency to crash on me if I use YouTube in HTML5... :/
Oh, and the unrecognised "Safari" is actually an older browser called Shiira that was, until fairly recently, still one of the fastest going. Lovely piece of kit, but no longer updated

I used to use Shiira. It had some awesome features like tab expose and transition effects. Too bad the project died

Save it as userChrome.css and save it in the chrome folder in your Firefox profile folder (type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into the search bar in the start menu)

This was added (for Windows at least) in 3.6.4. It is nice
I like FF because it's the most W3C standards compliant. The other browsers interpret CSS in wacky ways, especially IE. Though FF could use a speed boost compared to Chrome.
