Hello TL!
As a Michigander the Kwame Kilpatrick case is very relevant to me. Today he was sentenced to 18 months to 5 years in prison for a violation of probation.
Personally I think the sentence is beyond just, the guy is a gangster that cost one of the most money stricken areas in the country over $8,000,000.
What does everyone on TL think about this?
News article from today
Wikipedia entry for Kwame Kilpatrick
Fuck you Kwame

18 months for 8 million? That sounds like a good deal.
|
good, hope he gets the full 5 years. this guy was such a piece of shit who completely crippled an already broken detroit.
i still can't believe he was reelected though. that just shows to say how backwards detroit is right now.

There's no Parole Board int he world that will release him in under 4 I'm think. He will for sure not get released at 18 months.
And yes the general population of Detriot is stupid. I was blown away when they reelected him.
|
Are you from/near detroit diamond? I remember a few years ago when the election was going on and it seemed like everyone I talked to despised Kwame. How the hell did he get reelected? Was it just a silent majority that got him reelected or was there maybe some criminal activity involved in it? I remember that the media didn't really find anything too criminal involved in the election but knowing Kwame, that would be the first thing he'd resort to. Granted, the only people I talked to lived on the outskirts of detroit and were from medium income families
|
Holy crap, I just finished reading the wikipedia entry for him; that is hilarious and sad at the same time. It was like reading up on a modern Tweed ring!

I live only maybe 20 miles from Detroit.
How did he get reelected? People are stupid. It BLEW MY MIND when they announced he won the election.

Hey, if you check out Ejercito Estrada, the guys at detroit would still look like geniuses. (president that got oust then was second in the presidential elections.) lolz

I almost wish less attention was drawn towards Michigan. At least the Michigan court system is slightly more tough than California's...
He got re-elected for the same reason that all populists do.

What's the problem with Michigan?

just read the wikipedia page. Gotta admit, thats a pretty cool story for a canadian to read. would suck for that to be my city... although vancouver has its own issues with corruption right now, no hitmen killing strippers (that i know of)

He got re-elected for the same reason that all populists do. What's the problem with Michigan? That's a good question. State government's been trying to answer that for 30 years.
It's not like Kilpatrick is solely to lame for the current state of Detroit. Money has been funneled out of Wayne county (legally and illegally) since Coleman Young was mayor...

Fellow Michigander as well. This guy is a fucking crook, he got what he deserved. It's still bullshit that all his family members and friends still have their jobs.
|
I'm not too involved in the American politics... so I didn't know about this guy's crimes before now... but it's really rather unfortunate that it took so long and such awful acts to remove him from office and convict him...

If the community can reject this gangsta pimp then maybe they'll get around to minimizing Sharpton and Jackson (race pimps and professional floggers of victimhood and us-them mentality). Read the wiki articles as needed.

Read the wiki articles as needed. Wow where to start. You lump Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in with Kwame Kilpatrick and call them "pimps." Maybe before you criticize Sharpton and Jackson for playing the race card you should examine why you used the term "gangster pimp" to describe Kilpatrick. I'm sure on a white politician you would never use that term for his conduct, which amounts to corruption, adultery, and perjury (pretty white collar if you ask me).
That said Kwame Kilpatrick is a piece of shit and this sentence was just what we all needed.

This. We can now only hope the FBI tears into him about Tamara Greene while they have him in a spot he can't wiggle out of. Stripper or not, she was a mother and a person and did not deserve what happened to her.....
|
In fact my description was milder than your final one. If some white fool satsifies the pimp label then I'll happily label him such. So much for your race card.
|
Also to call Kwame anything but a gangster is just insane. The dude is a certified gangster, but the kind that wears a suit and drives an Escalade while being a gangster.
Now he'll just be wearing the MDOC blues thinking about his former gangster life.
Also Compuware already fired him, that was fast....
|
This is very interesting ^^. I believe he deserves every day he got in prison. Not only was he spending taxpayer money on lavish luxuries, but he was even laughing and joking about it in text messages.
P.S. Diamond you from the suburbs? Trenton here ^^
|
This guy must have some serious hookups It's a shame when criminals get away.
|
Being from the Detroit area this guy was awful... He took a city that you couldn't mess up any more and then he did just that. Thank god they didn't let him walk away from his obligation.

Yea Kwame deserves every single minute of prison time he gets.

It's even worse than that. Wiki Monica Conyers, Sam Riddle, Christine Beatty, and more names I can't think of offhand.
His criminal enterprise has led to one of the largest corruption sweeps in American history. It's that damn bad.

Im from Warren here Right next to Eastpointe and Detroit I remember when the Red Wings had their parade and he got booed during the celebration lol. He was bad news. So have most of the mayors in that city, Archer was alright though, but he didn't placate the masses and wouldn't give in to their BS.

Damn, that is a good amount of people in the south-east michigan area. I'm from ann arbor, went to middle/high school here and now i'm doing my undergraduate at uofm.
You can't really see how bad michigan is in the hole unless you leave ann arbor. ann arbor seems to be separate from michigan's economy since the university employs many people and provides so much for the town.
regardless, it doesn't take much to see how bad kwame was for michigan. good riddance, hopefully i won't hear of him on the news til 2015

I live in Downtown Detroit, we should definetly get a MI LAN going. I've got a giant house behind the DIA and could possibly host if there weren't too many people interested. Or possibly a OSL finals get together. PM if serious.
Also, everyone on the streets new Kwame was a real gangster, so all this was just a matter of time. Trust me though, when u live around here, Kwame was the least of our worries. Cops are WAY scarier!

BTW, he'll probably get more than this. There's a pending Federal case as well.

Yep. I have a feeling a couple weeks after his appeal fails a federal indictment coming his way.
Like I said he deserves to pay for what happened to Tamara Greene. There's not a shred of doubt in my mind him and his wife had a hand in that murder.
|
I live in Howell.
All the bullshit he pulled in office and in and out of court he deserves more than this, but he surprisingly still has a lot of Detroit/Flint support which makes me sick.
|
The best part is how he got off fairly light at first (something like 90 days in jail for pleading guilty to lying or something). Then, he gets hired by one of his rich friends and starts making like 200k+. He buys a big home. Something like 8 months ago he comes back to Detroit and says he has 6 bucks left over after living expenses. People investigate his nonsense and now he's in prison for 1.5 - 5 years. Honestly, how stupid can he be.
Southfield here btw.
|
Fuck this guy, 8 million huh...
|
I remember hearing about Kwame awhile back and all the scandals and what not. Then I got the chance to go through some of the rural parts of Detroit a few years back while visiting family...and WOW, that city really has gone to hell, that or its stuck 15 years in the past. What exactly did he do as Mayor anyways?

Apparently it was originally only 4 months, he got out in 99 days, and violated parole.
4 months for TEN felony counts.
That's justice.

8mil for doing 18months I would snap call

Lincoln Park here, unfortunately, I'm in South Dakota atm.
And just a little joke my 7 year old brother came up with:
Why was Spongebob afraid of Detroit?
Because Kwame killed Patrick.

hows he not in jail for life

Ignore the man's name, status, skin color, reputation and the supposed crimes. Just look at the series of events.
-Man is sentenced to 4 months.
-After serving nearly 3 1/2 months in jail, he's released on probation.
-Man violates his 21 day-long probation.
-Man is given a jail term that is between 4.5 & 15 times his original sentence. OR between 26 & 86 times his probation period.
--Just imagine, if his probation period had been 6 months, an proportional punishment would've been between 13 & 43 years added to his sentence.
W... T... F...
That's some psycho justice, right there. It doesn't even approach the realm of reasonable. I don't care how gangsta that corrupt mayor is, he just got crushed.

This happens all the time. It happens when you can't pin him on what you want so you just try to get him the maximum sentence on a lesser crime. It happened here in Lansing earlier this year after a guy who got off a rape charges a while back. He ended up getting 15 years for something crazy like pissing in public or something. Does someone deserve 15 years for peeing in public? No. Does someone deserve 15 years for rape? Not imo, should be instant death. Anyways the ignore the "supposed crimes"? Wtf? No. You probably aren't from Michigan so you really have no clue how bad this guy really is. This guy got off easy, if it were up to me he'd be locked up for life.

That is what happens are you act like an arrogant prick to everyone, and don't admit that you did anything wrong. For example, during the hearings before this trial he said he didn't know whether his wife had a job. If he can't admit that he was not following his probation and just acts to cocky all the time then I think the sentence is warranted.

Ya if you followed the whole case it was some shady shit. He sat up there and lied his ass off thinking he was smart. But what was most interesting is he caused this to himself. He went to the court and tried to get his payments lowered to $6 a month while living in a $1 million dollar house driving a brand new Escalade.
As for the 21 day probation? His probation was for 5 years....
