However, the study said that in some areas the male-female ratio was as high as 130 males for every 100 females, a report by the Mirror Evening newspaper said.
The report said the study urged the government to relax the so-called "one-child" policy and study the possibility of encouraging "cross-country marriages."
China first implemented its population control policy in 1979, generally limiting families to one child, with some exceptions for rural farmers, ethnic minorities and other groups.
It has said the policy has averted 400 million births.
Not to be a downer on Inc's peepee party, but imbalanced population ratios are a security issue. Overabundance of poor, single males likely leads to greater crime and instability which, depending on the political context, can fuel extremism. Think of the Foot in the first Ninja Turtles movie.

WoW wasn't out yet during TMNJ. China has no problem with single lonely guys. It just means 12 million more female night elf rogues.

12 million
How do you figure that?
With the one-child per family policy, this assumes about 12 million families aborted the fetus after discovering it was a girl so they can get a boy the next time around. So assuming 50/50 chance at a boy, without abortion, it would be 12 million boys and 12 millions girls, but those 12 million girls were aborted to get 12 million additional boys = 24 million more men.
Though, this doesn't take into account the fact that those 12 million families that got girls could get girls again on the second, third, and so on, attempt. So it's probably a lot more than just 12 million.

Well... Only one solution... China must now become gay and then the birth rate along with the population will plummet allowing China to become straight in a hundred years or so...

Maybe I'm doing the math wrong, but:
If n child-bearing families decide to abort until they get a boy, there will be ~n female abortions (basic probability). Now for a population p, you'll have b = (p - n)/2 + n boys and g = p - b girls, resulting in a boy-girl skew of b - g = n.
Therefore, for a boy-girl skew of 24 million, you would need 24 million families deciding to abort until they get a boy, which would result in 24 million female abortions/infanticides/overseas adoptions/whatever.
Ignoring the fact that in western countries without infanticide there are more women than men.
And yes, you're doing the maths wrong. To get 24 million more men than women you need 12 million births of boys rather than girls. So first you take 12 million abortions/infanticides and that gives you on average 6 million boys. Then you take 6 million more abortions/infanticides for the ones who got girls on their second attempt. That in turn gives you 3 million boys. Then you have 3 million more abortions/infanticides of girls to get rid of them and clear the way for the next attempt of which 1.5 million are boys. And that still leaves 1.5 million girls who need to be killed like their elder 3 sisters. And we've already had 21 million infanticides to get to this point.

Yes...your infinite sum converges on 24 million abortions/infanticides which was my answer. What's the problem?

That's because girl babies die less often statistically.
which in turn means that once you made it through the first year as a male baby, your life expectancy isn't that much shorter than that of your sister anymore

That has been a long tradition in China among some of the ethnic tribes. It's been a common practice for brothers to share one wife in many of the tribes in Sichuan and Yunnan province. Forget their names and too tired to look it up right now :\
Think it's polyamory when it's a woman with several men tho rite? Or does polygamy go both ways?

polygamy is the general form of having more than one spouse polygyny = man with >1 wife polyandry = woman with >1 husband
polyamory means having more than one intimate relationship at the same time; in facebook terms, 'open relationship' kind of thing
Wouldn't like to be a chinese man when that happens.. Wouldn't like to be an unborn girl in china either.. But when you do get born, you are getting laid for sure.

women have little trouble getting laid as it is...
Amazing with all the human rights problems and wars we went through, the death toll might help control our population. Yet even with the "one child policy", we still have over 1.3 billion people. And this is only counting the Chinese population in PRC.

perfect math !
Much more elegant than the solution with 12*(1+(1/2)+(1/4)+ ....).
Polyandry seems like a good idea. Ants do it! But in terms of greatest amount of pleasure per unit of time, that type of relationship generally is very efficient. When you've got 10 fellow husbands, individual performance need not be an issue

That is not true, or at least that factor is not enough to make up for the fact that there are more males born than females. In western countries males outnumber females up to the age of ~40, it is only above the age of 60 that you start to notice women outnumbering men and above 85 it is almost only women left.
So in your 20's you got a statistically lower chance of getting a date as a guy compared to if you are a girl. Supported by both maths and experience this got to be true!
It's much better to have fewer females because in a population of 1 man and 99 women, you can have 99 babies a year, whereas in a population of 99 men and 1 woman you will only have 1 baby per year.

The tradition is to do with lifestyle, ie Farming in general rather than ethnic groups, though it is a practice discouraged by Han culture/beliefs. Basically it's better to keep the brothers in one household, so that the family farmland does not get divided up - which means they becomes less productive. Other practices with a similar aim include: only the eldest son gets the family land, the younger ones either have to leave for work, or become a monk etc.
This in-balance will self-correct! Already it is too expensive to have sons. In many major cities, having, women hold such bargaining power that, a guy without a mortgage financed house & car is practically un-marriable.

You're right but I didn't say it had to do with either ethnicity or farming. I just said it already occurs within some ethnic groups in China. I never generalized or said, "ethnic people share wives."
It wouldn't make sense for me to say, "Farming people sometimes share wives to keep from having to divide their farmland." Since this is a thread about gender ratios and not how inheritance works.

yeah, you're right. I'm sure they've got it so under control by now that the better state of affairs now justifies a disregard for the existence of the situation. I feel so silly.
Chinese have conquered many more hardships than this. As an anecdote, 忍 is tattooed on a lot of working class men's hands and or forearms here. It means "endure". To see a bunch of middle class kids making jokes and puns about a culture they don't have any experience with, regarding a problem that is so widely understood by locals, is typical of the West's superior ignorance and furthermore symptomatic of the sublimation of its own insecurities.
