What would you do if you won the Lottery?

So today I woke up, was doing the morning routine, eating breakfast and watching the local news. I wasn't really paying attention, until I heard an old co-worker/buddy of mine's name. I looked up and sure enough, yesterday, he won the lottery here in Washington and is now 6.5 million dollars richer. He was a great guy, definitely deserved it. Of course I was stunned, gave him a call right away and congratulated him. I couldn't believe someone I know personally had actually won.

Anyways, it got me thinking. If you guys won the lottery, what would you do with the 6.5 million dollars? Would it be spent on lavish things such as nice cars, boats, and a house, or would you be one of the conservative spenders? Maybe invest it? I'd love to hear what you guys would do with that much money.

From what i've read most people who win the lottery actually end up addicted to hard drugs and eventually bankrupt and have nothing. There is actually a lot of people who regret even winning the lottery in the first place. I remember watching this show on CNN that gave some ridiculous high percentage of people who actually were worse off after wasting their winnings as well as their own money who were all winners of large sums of cash.

Watch your friend to see what happens to him because it is really hard to stay on a schedule that will prolong the money instead of just blowing it on drugs and other crazy things.

Nothing, I would continue living my life but have the knowledge that if I screw up, I have 6.5 million to help me get back up.

I would share the money with my friends, if none of us ever needed to work we could all hang out more often. We are all recent or soon to be university graduates so we can all live on the cheap. If the jackpot was small, I would rock a giant vacation for my friends.

I know the statistics are out there somewhere so I'll avoid a hard number here but most lottery winners burn through the money really fast, if you get to talk to your friend again try to impart the wonder of the special the gift he has; he can live modestly for the rest of his life or live extravagantly for a few years.
Don't play to win, play to get better.

its not like win = death by drugs, it depends a lot on the person. But psychologists actually suggest that if you win you shouldn't change anything drastically in your live, just continue with you school/job and only slowly use the money to ease your life.

Save 50% of it in something relatively illiquid or a long term fund, squander the rest, live life as usual, retire early.

I would just save like 4/5ths of it, then have like 250k to blow for every year of college. fuckkkkk yea!

Come to think of it, when you have a cool 5 million bucks, so many things are cheap. Like massive plasma screens and car insurance. And eating at chinese restaurants, ect. I think it would still take a bit to break my money saving habits though.

I would probably buy my way into a University since I cant afford it now, buy a middle class type house and a dream car. Buy my parents whatever they wanted and put the rest of the money into my savings account and just continue to live my life how i'm currently living.

I think a lot of the people that win the lottery quit their jobs which is a huge mistake. "I have millions of dollars now I don't need to work anymore" is surely a mindset that plagues younger people that win the lottery. That is probably why so many people end up worse after they win the lottery than before.

I'd pay off all taxes and debt first, of course.

From that, I'd buy a house, nothing too expensive, but a decent enough house that I'd have a spare bedroom or two, in case I ever had company over, and that I wouldn't outgrow it too fast.

I'd continue my education. If for whatever reason I were to lose the money, I'd want to be able to do something that I'd be able to live comfortable, even without the money.

I would take some, maybe no more than 5-10% of the post-tax lump sum, and take a vacation, buy a car, splurge a bit, whatever.

I'd put a bit in a normal checking account, then stick the remaining 60-70% into different savings/investments.

I'd set, let's say 5 million of that aside to a bank account or something and then I would travel the world for at least a year, doing and seeing anything and everything I've ever wanted.

I would be really lazy and spending most of my days being drunk / playing games / reading lol.

Also i think i would completly stop my studies ( or start to study something REALLY interesting and not something that gives job opportunities ) and give some money to my bro and help him to buy a house and parents ( for their second house ).

Maybe i would buy my own house too xD

Also i would probably move somewhere else because my country is run by idiots and because taxes are ridiculous.
And i would definitly invest my money.
fuck all those elitists brb watching streams of elite players.

I remember hearing something like that too, that most people go through all the money really fast and are left with nothing.
I wouldn't do anything differently in life, 6.5million isn't that much, really. Just have some more monies so play around with.

Invest ! Just keep living normally knowing that no matter what bad happens at work/school and life in general you have a safety net, it would make working and studying so much more carefree.
And once the investment moniez come rolling in buy a tropical island !!

sure that's correct, but that is apparently really hard for people when they are introduced with that type of money for nothing.

I would pay off my car, probably buy a house, and help my immediate family out with their debts. Other then that I would probably just live life as per usual. I'd probably keep working and all that, maybe scale back my hours slightly. Most people make the mistake of blowing their lottery winnings and ending up back where they were, if not worse, within a few years. I'd make sure not to do the same.

I'd put it with the rest of my money and start another business or two. I dropped out of college once I realized that I was making more money working for myself than I would once I finished my degree. I'd like to create some kind of family business for my kids to inherit that isn't connected to what I currently do.

I would finish college since I'm so close to being done. After that I would probably move out and comfortably live while searching for a job that I would actually like instead of taking one with good pay / benefits.

I would also spoil myself with a badass gaming rig, tv, etc, and probably a decent new car.

pay off my debts, and then with all of those millions left over i'd invest. keep money coming in and i'd never have to really worry to much about life anymore.

O yea i also want a butler named Anderson. So i can ask him " Mr. Anderson will you please fetch me some beverages for this fine evening." And he would reply. " very well sir". then he'd bow.

Probably just continue life as normal. I might drop out of university or just start skipping a lot of shit because it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe random lulz stuff like going to bw lans in Canada. Oh, and I'd pay some amazingly good progamer/coach to make me a better player because if I'm gonna have a hobby I might as well be awesome at it. Nothing really I want to buy or do.

If I had a billion, I'd set up a permanent trust fund so my future family could live like the Kennedys.

If I had 6.5 million (FYI, only about 4 million after taxes, depending on your state), I'd invest it and live the same. Then near the end of my life, I'd do the same--set up a trust fund so my future family can benefit. More likely than not, the $4M is going to be a lot more than $4M inflation adjusted if I end up living the same way.

seriously.

I'd get this and overtake ^ that on anything that has corners.

But seriously, I'd invest just enough to get like $1000-2000/month interest and spend the rest of it in less than one month.

Im not a n00b, I just play like one.

Not much I like to buy. I've had little my entire life so I've always liked just having little. Never cared for much. So I'd say buy a new PC cause this one sucks. Probably pay so my family and I could move out of this trailer. Then put the rest in a bank.

I'd definately pay off my study loan, then buy a nice falt and devote myself to my hobbies rather than grinding money at work. I'd probably still work part-time since I actually do enjoy my work, but nowhere near the quantity I am doing currently.

I would probably save most of it. I would of course spend some of it quite fast (get a good computer, travel somewhere etc), but most of it would get locked up in the bank.

Fund a foreign progamer team after I buy necessities.

That'd probably be too expensive for +6million so I'd probably just fund some awesome LANs and retire with 3 million of it.

I'd buy a nice car. Some sick clothes (major designer type stuff), a badass watch, some high-end designer sunglasses, and a house. So I figure I'd be through about a million to a million and a half by that time (mostly because of the house). I'd pay off my parents' house too, or buy them a different one, whichever they wanted. The rest would get saved, pretty much... I'd keep working, I think, but I'd probably quit my current job and look for a different one.

Not the ugliest car I've seen. I probably wouldn't buy it, and I certainly don't understand your adoration for it, but it's not THAT ugly.

invest it all at 5% interest, live off the interest minus inflation.

i think buying a house is a bad idea. without continual income from your money you will not be able to afford the house in the long term. renting is the way to go.

Probably invest the majority of it after buying new house+car etc. then live off the interest after never showing up at my job or uni ever again ^^

I guess I'd travel quite a lot and smoke a ridiculous amount of weed too.

If I won the lottery and it was, say, $6.5 million dollars I would take $4 million of that to live comfortably and invest the remaining $2.5 mil. Then I would continue re-investing earnings and donating much of it to charities.

Since I wouldn't need to work I would spend much of my spare time learning things I've always wanted to but lacked money, time, or motivation for. I would definitely find myself an easy job too, I highly doubt I will ever find a job doing what I want to.

If i won id buy a house in miami or california. get some toys.Take a 6 month vacation with my family , come back go to school and try to do something with my life that i would never be able to w.o. the money. Im a party animal so it would be hard not goin out and balling it up in my firrari. WAT

I would buy:
- a nice house near the coast of Spain, not too big or crazy (300k is plenty for that).
- a studio for sculpting/painting stuff (also quite cheap compared to ones in the Americas).
- a good sailboat that is capable of sailing along the Mediterranean coast.
- an efficient/reliable/comfortable car (not Boji/200k+ like Rekrul).
I would also give 1 million to my family, have 2 million invested, and have 1 million for my unborn offspring that they will never know about. Oh and 25k to TEAMLIQUID

The rest I'd piss away on partying and stuff. Coke and hookers and all that.

Yes I really wish I had money.

90% into a long term savings account.
Still left with a considerable amount to play around with. I'd get a small house which would be around $300000 which would be half or so. Rest would be in a decent car, a few video game consoles (and games of course) and a ton of manga. Everything else I could bring from what I already have. Anything else I need I can spend the rest. (The stuff left behind goes in chequeing account)

I find it odd that so many people here say they wouldn't waste most of the money, but in reality, most people do waste it. Either we at TL are overly optimistic concerning our financial self-control, or we are smarter than people who actually win the lottery. It reminds me of the poll that shows a high percentage of people think they are "smarter than average."

-I'd probably put about 1-2 million into a retirement fund i cant touch till i'm like 50+ so i actually have to do something with my life
-ship 1 mil to my parents
-pay off all current and future college payments (~100-200k depending on grad school)
-save 500k-1mil for rent payments till i get out of college, then the rest on a house when i get a job
-Probably about a million on cars...GTR, audi rs4 + r8, aston martin, corvette zr1, and some nice sedan/suv. Fuck i just realized my garage will cost more than my house
-Another couple hundred grand on sick nice shit like a watch, clothes, basically rich people shit so i can be super ballin when i roll up to vegas in my r8
-the rest will cover random vacations/absurd amounts of alcohol/partying/gambling/etc
-I will finish college and get a job to pay the bills and raise my kids. Life without a purpose is not a life at all. I will be able to do something i love though and not worry about how much it pays.
-Probably give away some amount to charity or some shit. college for kids as well.

Easy. I'd go do what I really love doing, buy a nice house in full near a beach. Set aside 50k a year for traveling and for adventure. Then, I would invest the remaining 3.6 million dollars. The compound interest from that alone would be equal to a an executive's salary. Oh and 10k a year for TSL.

I'd invest most of it. Low yield, low risk stuff for the most part.

Take like 1 million of it, buy a nice new house, not too expensive, but something that will appreciate.
New car, stuff like that. Half of that 1 million will probably go into a locked retirement fund or something.

1 million to family.

And just be a lazy ass for a few years. Do some traveling. Eventually, I'm sure I'll go back to work/devote my life to something a bit more meaningful, and I'll always have something to fall back on if something were to happen (or if I just want to break for a while).

It'd be nice.

Lol, kinda mundane.

to a certain degree you are right, in that most who say they will invest 50% are simply naive, but then again it's hard for someone who has never had 5 million to know what that entails, or how quickly it can disappear.

Also since most of the people at TL have been responsible thus far in their lives they have no idea what monster might come out when they place them selves and even as little as 10k directly in harms way, for the sake of experience.

also it has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. out of the 10 most intelligent people i have ever known ( myself not included ^ ^) the top 4 spiraled insanely out of control, the top 2 of those are somewhat stabilized in a certain mediocrity trying to convince themselves the rest of their life is worth living, and of the other 2 , one is wealthy and stable, and the other is trying hard to get there. having very shaky results but still looks promising.

this pretty much. Winning just a few million will net you far less than that amount after taxes, not to mention being paid out in small denominations for years to come...but it would be plenty to spend on impulse buys (guilty pleasure) and would definitely help pad out a comfortable standard of living.

1. Visit South Korea and watch some matches there
2. Donate $/support some awesome people/websites online (aka. TL.net, SC commentators, NeverGG)
3. actually buy some software/games/music that I love legitimately
4. Invest the rest

Travel. I would see the world. Buy my parents a little cottage some place nice. Buy my younger brother and myself nice cars. Not have to worry about student loans anymore...

Do people honestly think that 6 million dollars isn't that much money??? 30k a year around here is a fairly decent income to get by on. Make that for 20 years and you only have 300k... It is a LOT of money to some people still...

I think 30k per year is not much and I plan to work hard to make much much more than that.

1 million dollars is just a number if you work hard and manage your money well you will get there eventually

It depends. If I'm getting all the money at one time, I would be careful not to get bored with life. Getting everything you want kind of ruins all the excitement and anticipation of life. But I definitely would design the perfect house and I've always wanted a perfect entertainment room. Of course a studly car, invest it. A good chunk will probably go to gambling since money wouldn't be an issue and I can actually have fun.

Becaaaaaause of the licenses, the sponsors, the houses and player contracts, etc. That and the entire process would cost a lot of money (i believe). I guess some of the bad teams could cost less but I'm sure it's a lot more intricate than it sounds.

Honestly, I'd probably just hide it in some far away bank account and pretend I didn't have it until an emergency came up. Of course I only say that now, my attitude would probably change if I actually had the money.

but I really have no idea what I'd want to spend it on =/

I don't really understand why people with money choose to live in massive houses (aside from the obvious reasons such as prestige and investment in property.) I'd definitely buy a nice cozy place for myself somewhere cool and also make sure my Mum could live comfortably. I don't drive so a car is out and I'm not interested in things like yachts. I'd probably buy;

Top of the range camera equipment.
A decent new laptop.
Some game consoles and games.
A new sewing machine and fabrics etc.
An exercise bike.
Lots and lots of DVDs.
ForGG's love.

I would pay off all my parent's debts. Then give a considerable amount of money to my brothers to buy their first house. Buy a house. Buy others if I could, and rent them out. Talk to a financial adviser about diversifying the money. Take more vacations during summer. Buy a PC and more better quality food. Give some of it away to a local outreach ministry who feeds the poor, needy and homeless.

That is about it.
If anyone has any serious prayer requests please PM me. Thx.

I would probably continue schooling, but change my major and the direction to something I actually enjoy doing instead of basing what I want to do partially on the end pay, and then like others have said, invest the majority of it into savings while keeping maybe 1 million to use on minor luxuries while continuing my current, much more comfortable (thx 5 million in the bank) life style.

P.S. That wingsuit shit looks awesome.

Id get an accountant, spend very little of it and continue my life as normal.

I have had the luxury of being able to live my entire life already financially secure, so i gain very little out of it.
Certainly a very large sum would go into charity, id probably (if i were old enough) spend some of it on WSOP poker.

It's nice to know that i want to live life and work hard for life and not for money.

I would just buy some nice comfortable house ( not even expensive ) , buy some car and live my life normally so that I had this cash for the rest of my life.

I d take like additional 24.000 to have it on some pleasers like restaurants etc

Some if I d take to help someone in need or something but all in reasonable fashion

This and I would just chill and enjoy my life

Strangely enough, I would propably end up risking my life alot right after, doing all sorts of extreme sports. I've always wanted to try everything that really gives you an adrenaline rush.
Other than that I would mostly just live life as normal, except getting myself a nice place to live, and traveling to other countries a bit more often.
