Hey guys. long time lurker, first time i've unburrowed.
I am finally complete with my zealot costume for blizzcon 2009 (mask is 1 day away), but i wanted to share a preview as well as find out who else is dressing up.
What do you think so far?
its facebook, not sure if the link will work.
EDIT- mask preview is on the link on the 2nd page. Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Agreed with all of the above. Freaking amazing! I think we'd all love a run-down of the construction process of this. Even if it's secret information that has to be revealed post competition ^^
I really appreciate the positive feedback guys, i really do. i have a 300 picture diary of the construction process, which i'd be more than happy to release if anyone cares?lol
Breakdown.
Started in May, making pieces while i worked with paper stock(business card paper), sizing, engineering the mechanics, conceptualizing the design, and overcoming the very intricate details of a unique costume...
500+ hours, ~$1000 (materials, gas), 4 hours a night really. fiberglassed the entire thing (arch above shoulders was insanely hard), and designing the mask (PREVIEW- the Bust before fine details/lights/sizing......) Enjoy
i just want to thank Tasteless and Superdanielman.. i didnt have alot of motivation from any other sources other than watching GOMtv for all those months... so thanks you guys. sign my costume at blizzcon?
Disclaimer: I would never consider doing what you have done and think it makes you look like a moron.
That said, I applaud your efforts. The suit looks pretty good. I think the shoulder arcs are way too big, but heck - lighting up totally seals the deal! Best of luck in the contest!
Good god. That's amazing, but it also seems fragile (especially the rings). I hope you don't run into people at blizzcon and break it; that would be sad =<.

We can get Inc to pull together some body building body guards no?
On August 19 2009 15:42 0neder wrote: Disclaimer: I would never consider doing what you have done and think it makes you look like a moron.!
Yes definately, there is a HUGE amount of NERD element in this... and my rationale was simple... school starts aug 24th (csun), and blizzcon is the week before it... so do something epic before you commit your next project to the MCAT. it was costly, but i wanted a fun distraction...since my APM is bad ...
the arch's were finely tuned to fit the mask, my inspiration was an artist who posted here once...
heres the concept.
it should fit nicely. considering the mask is 10'"+ inches taller than my head
-- id like to give the artist a shout out if hes known, but he was my inspiration for the design. Thank you
Fucking sweet dude. I'll be cheering for you. It's a shame I'm not going as anything this year, we could have battled it out! =P (I was the Marine at 05 and the Ghost at 07)
i was gonna say after seeing the first 2 pictures that although the body looks gorgeous, whether you do well or not in the competition will depend a lot on the mask. but after seeing the picture of it unfinished on page 2, i'm pretty confident that you'll do very well. excellent costume! look forward to pictures of you at blizzcon!
That is so cool hahaha I can't believe it lights up, btw how come only one psi blade is lit?
Yes only 1 psi blade is illuminated (nice observation). the other is fully functional now, and it was quite a struggle to fix the placement of the illuminator. that picture was taken at 5pmish today, and is done now.
i also hope the mask is epic enough to draw the points i need to win the contest.
i have an ace up my sleeve, which i will reveal after blizzcon is over...
thanks for the feedback. also, i will not likely don the costume until 3-4 pm, since it weighs roughly 60lbs. the contest starts at 7:45... which reminds me.. i was not allowed to Enter the contest because is was Late on the deadline (despite trying weekly since may)... if you want to show some support for TL and myself (which i will gladly plug if i win), you can email blizzconcontest "BlizzConContest@blizzard.com" <BlizzConContest@blizzard.com>
to help get me reserved... i would appreciate it.. if not, i should be able to sign up on spot... hopefully =/
On August 19 2009 17:16 ahswtini wrote: Woah, GLOWING BLADES. It looks pretty damn close to the picture you were basding it off
thank you. i worked very hard in order to re-create it... but it being a picture, and me being... an over-weight human, really posed a difficult obstacle. i did what i could, but im still a bit disapointed in the stomach arch i made that wouldn't "conform" to my stature... i in turn reserved the right to use a black studded belt with loops to hold my leg weight... which i think turned out quite well...
this thread was supposed to be about other people cosplaying (panda bear guy, maybe?)...
Guy that did marine and ghost, you were a HUGE inspiration as well, my buddy and i wanted to re-create that as a duo, but he digressed.... metal-head type. anyway, great work in years past, i was blown away with your detail and over-all engineering of the arms... movement is a difficult task to achieve in non-human architecture.
Where is the facebook link? And don't worry about the cost man, you can most definitely sell this on ebay plus you WILL win the contest, everyone on TL will fucking cheer our lungs out for your hard work and dedication. It's the least we can do. PS- I hope they let you dim the lights to show off the lights while you demo it for the contest. Btw, did you put any attack sound effects or anything into it?
There is no way you can't win, I'm sorry, this is perhaps the best costume I've ever seen, I can't wait to see lots of pictures of you at blizzcon, man if you've been lurking all this time, and being creating stuff like this...
i just noticed that the zlot legs are raised like a foot and a half off the ground. combine that with the huge shoulders and you'll be able to see this guy from probably anywhere in the convention center LOL
When I saw the first picture, I wasn't very impressed. But with the lights turned off (and costume lights turned on) it looks freaking epic! Just make sure you appear in the darker places @ Blizzcon and people will bow to you in awe.
I never had much respect for people who dress up as anime or video game characters BUT this is freaking amazing. If you could do this, you can do anything. Major props.

I just imagined Incontrol wearing a tutu that was shaped and painted like a shuttle, with a very mad look on his face, carrying two guys in suits like this and a fatter dude that is on his stomach pretending to be a reaver.
imagine the blizzcon theater in complete darkness and all of a sudden, the lights from the costume go up with some epic zealot sounds in the background, "my life for aiur" "all for the empire" ^^
GEEEZ... at first i seen the first pic and i was like "pretty good" then i seen you light up and my jaw hit the ground! Sick job man GOod luck in the Cos play Tournament!!
Okay now I understand why cosplayers get so damn excited over this stuff.
I was looking at some of the past winners and the quality here is just as good. Except you have kick ass lights and the extra height from the costume's feet and mask are going to make you stand out. With the mask on and feet on, you've got to be at least 7 feet, right?

Jesus a true fucken zealot in real life. FUCK YEAH
On August 19 2009 21:46 Fen wrote: How long does the costume stay lit up for until its battery runs out?
its a 4x .5v blue diodes ran in parallel with 100ohm resistor per 2 diodes on a 9v battery... approximately 24+ hours or so... i ran it for that long and it kept going, so i decided to save battery life.

You should be in the starcraft tourney, and when the game starts just walk over and stab the other guy.
hahaha
i have been thinking for months of creative things to do, like Zealot Dance part with a boom box, pwning n00bs IRL, but entering the tournament and doing a IRL Zealot rush would be a First. ever...
I clicked this link expecting to go lawl cosplay fag then I simultaneously shit my pants and came a little bit. I want to shake your psionic blade at blizzcon sir +1 to you!

yea that is going to be a problem... this year the quality is much better... remember the eredar twins last year? caitlyn and other girl who isnt single are both wearing monster WOW costumes... and they are hot chicks. luckily for me, i have lights, stand a man-height of 7'4' and costume height of nearly 9.5'.
and yes, the eyes do light up. and i will be seen nearly anywhere in the convention center...
if you want to take a picture with me, find me after 3pm in the first 3 halls (NOT WoW hall 4, obviously)

his own feet are about 1 foot off the ground, if look at the costume, so no he's probably not 7' 4". He's sort of stilting that shit up.

oh sir, it walks. and it walks with a steady, stern, pace... like a cowboy walking to a cliffside to watch the sun-rise...
im enthralled by the community support... but now i must go finish my mask... and i will not be back until thursday.. if anyone wants to bring a TeamLiquid flag/shirt, we can do some pictures in the dim light for advertising purposes, and if anyone wants to bring a boombox with zealot trance music, we can have a matrix-esque rave party, zealot style.
if you come up with any ideas, assume ill go with it. if im willing to spend 4 months on this, theres a good chance id be willing to spend a few minutes dancing/posing whatever at blizzcon.
Seriously I think we need to dub him the new 'Mantoss'. When he gets up on stage I want all the SC fans to start screaming MANTOSS MANTOSS MANTOSS...... SRSLY.

Chill you have to make this happen and.. drag him to the party if you must chill.. you have too...
Wow I can't believe I missed this thread. It truely brings a tear to the protoss user inside of me. Awesome job man and it would seriously be a shame if you didn't win the contest. I only wish I could go to see it in person.
Mad respect for all the work u put into this, fantastic costume! i seriously doubt there's gonna be anymore costume thats gonna be more epic than this..... unless someone made an epic epic goliath suit :x
p.s. he should win the cos-contest. light-up blades = auto-win.. no freakin' WoW cosplay going to come close.. unlesss its some skimpy dressed female or w/e..

He didn't make the finals. :/ Top 6 were all WoW players.
Yeah I can't get over how good they look, I think the one taken from the China/Taiwan event looks a little better. But still, they both look bloody impressive.
On August 22 2009 13:21 Hyde wrote: Yeah I can't get over how good they look, I think the one taken from the China/Taiwan event looks a little better. But still, they both look bloody impressive.
Well, the China one was professionally made and sponsored by the event organizer. The Blizzcon one was done by an individual, so that is the main difference.
While the zealot is cool to me and I'm sure it took a lot of time to make, but the WoW girls costume's from the gallery look a bit more polished. And of course some cute nerd girls + boobs + skin is more of a win in my eyes.
I feel like if the stage had been a bit darker for your costume, you would have done better. There was a lot of unnecessary reflection and the lighting up didn't show up well which wasn't really fair to how awesome your costume looked in the darker/dimmer areas of the room.
Here's the Zergling hat I made for my girlfriend at 3 in the morning before BlizzCon because I couldn't sleep. It took me about 2 hours to make from scraps I found around the house.
Well after looking at some galleries of the contest I don't think it should have placed at all. The others were great and very true to the look of their games and much more aesthetically pleasing. This 8 foot tall mutant zealot was just cheap looking and kind of doofy.
awesome! tough paladin (3rd place)costume was kinda meh, winner was really deserved
also there was many costumes that made me LOL like the wow treeform druid, sartharion and some other, very good competition overall and hell of a hot girls mmmmmmmm sylvanas, 1st troll shaman, etc
lots of work put on some of the costumes, shame that our TL fenix didn't at least enter finals, it was truly great
Hey Guys, blizzcon starts in less than 2 days and i was revisiting this thread for a bit of nostalgia. Im really happy you guys kept it here and very thankful that you all contributed and supported me and the community so much. I regret to inform you that i've been working on the costume since the day the contest ended and up until last night. ive modified the legs so they were more stable, lowered the stilts to give more control and a stronger angle on the 2nd knee. i modified the exposed human boot and stilt to better shadow the true human behind it. i glossed the outer paint and re-fitted the mask. i darkened the protoss tribal markings and even worked on my Zealot Crouch-lean forward stance. I really loved this costume and really enjoyed the time/money i invested in it. But if im being honest, all the extra work i did was not to present it its 2.0 modified form this year, its simply to just reconcile the crushing dissapointment i felt once it was completely finished in its beta version. i feel like i could have made all the later changes weeks before blizzcon but i never happened.
I feel like i let myself down and the community, which is why i've been in relative seclusion. Hopefully in 2011 i can put something together that can blend modern tech with virtual tech. until then, i will be at blizzcon 2010, maybe even rocking the zealot chest and mask for good measure, who knows.
Thanks for all the support.
Edit- ill post a pic to show you the transformation when i get a chance. maybe tonight if possible

Let the community down? Since when is being a badass letting the community down?
Did Rambo apologize after singlehandedly winning the Cold War? Did Helen Keller apologize after mastering language? Did baller apologize after joining TL.net?
You shouldn't feel the need to apologize to teamliquid haha, that suit was awesome in the first place and I'm sure we all can't wait to see the improved one :o
Bro, trust me your suit deserved to win more than anyone else. You've obviously put more work into that suit than any of the winners last year... I doubt they designed and made the whole costume themselves.
Just vent your anger on innocent WoW players...SLAY SOME WOW NEWBS - as the other guy said.
For some reason I'd have preferred using fibreglass on the larger pieces of the costume, just to give it a much more rigid look; but if you're going for a 2011 prize, I'm calling for a THOR IS HEAH.
And yes, MAD PROPS for the costume. It's much better when not spotlighted (natural light levels)
read this last year, and then I saw this again... that suit still takes my breath away. so fucking good! good luck man, you still the most bad ass zealot ever!
