RTS/FPS, yep, a very unique genre, there are two roles you can play within your team, you can either be the commander [think playing starcraft] or a player [think controlling a marine/zergling], although the commander side lacks a bit on strategy, due to some players not following your command, it's still an awesome game. There are two teams, the horde and the legion [humans and beasts]
Background information
Savage 1 was released a long time ago, not sure of the year, but i really think it wasn't advertised enough, i didn't even here about it until 2007. Originally, it was pay for the game and then free online play, but after a declining player base it went freeware. The graphics aren't anything spectacular, although the Newerth.com community have been working on new textures/animations and bug fixes, which make it look quite impressive from before.
The main thing that draws people to savage once they play it is the melee system, which imo hasn't been matched by any other game to date, it's hard to explain, but later on i'll post some videos about it.
The community is pretty active EU side, and pretty active on the US side as well, you can usually find around 200 players online during the evening. There is also a league as well as a ladder, so the competitive side isn't dead just yet. There is also a stat tracker, which records your stats for each game, so you can monitor your different stats, there is also a clan system.

Some screenshots of the original release, note these are not up to date, and many, many changes have been made, these are the official screenshots though.

I know the graphics aren't really comparable to todays standards, but if you can look past the graphics, and play it for the gameplay, you'll be really surprised.
Note:
Savage 2 has been made freeware, although after playing savage 2, it doesn't really compare to the savage 1 system, sure it's still the same style of game, but no where near as fun, yet the graphics are a lot better
Savage 1 can be downloaded from Newerth
Savage 2 can be downloaded from S2Games
I strongly suggest trying 1 before 2, and last but not least, here is a gameplay trailer of the new graphics;
