The Chinese Students Association of a local university is hosting a DOTA competition next week. Quoting exactly: This event is a ESPORT that uses a team elimination system to determine the top 3 teams to win. Dota version 6.73c. The game use ap mode. So, I've never played Dota in my life and I've gotta beat some underground Chinese guys. I was ~1900 in HoN and I've played a fair bit of Dota2 now so I think I can get good enough to give some good games. The main things I need help with are: 1. Where to download and set up Dota. I don't know if I still have my CDs or even where to download old versions of Dota. I'll also need whatever third party programs there are for setting up hotkeys and things because I'm used to Dota2. 2. Where to play some AP games of Dota to practice. I've only heard of Garena and Dotacash and I haven't used either. I don't need amazing games but I just need to play lots of games to see the differences and get used to animations/heroes. 3. Short breakdown on significant differences from Dota2 to Dota1. 4. Some ideas on what heroes to watch out for; I probably only know 3/4 of the heroes right now. It's 6.73c and AP so I'll probably try and get my team to play DS or play it myself. I'll see what heroes people can play and then work out a couple lineups. Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm forming a team with some friends. Most of them have played Dota1 but not for a while. I don't think any of us know the new heroes that came out around December.

DS isn't very good in dota1 unless you have a specific strategy. dota1 lanes can be more brutal on him and vacuum + ult isnt as strong as in dota2

1. I only see the new 6.74 on getdota. I haven't really looked around that much but a link to the map would be easy for me. Also, I found the install guide which is nice but an iccup-style compilation would be easier. 2. I'll probably just mass game on garena and dotacash then. I don't really care about the skill level, especially since I'll be terrible as I get used to it. 3. Yeah, I've read discussions over the years in this thread and I know orbs are especially bad. I'll probably just narrow down my hero picks to a handful of heroes and then learn how their skills interact with items. That shouldn't be too troublesome. 4. I don't think we'll have good enough coordination or skill to figure out any good strategy ahead of time. Probably just take a hard carry and give it space to farm.

Also to add, dota 2 map is about 5% smaller, so moving from lanes (espec across map) will feel and actually be longer.

Ye when I returned to dota I found many had moved on to hon. Happy to find it ran on my computer I was extremely pleased with the reconnect feature and improved interface. Dota 2 was gifted to me by a friend over christmas and after a brief period of thinking I may dabble in hon again before realizing I never wanted to hon again. Smoke answers all my old qualms with dota as it really does give a great means of suppressing information and quickly moving about the map. The smaller map does make dota 2 a faster game and I can't say I don't like it. The patient way in which icefrog is expanding the beta should make for well adjusted games at release, as it gives time to balance against this pace shift. Also, the courier changes are great! takes away many bad feeling games.

I said something along the lines of, "You want me to play a game where you need to learn what 100 heroes do before you even stand a chance? What kind of stupid game is that. I could probably just look up some build right now and beat you." In retrospect, I was right about how much you need to know before you can compete. Also in retrospect, I could have been less of a dick about wanting to play Brood War. Edit: I've gotten most things working now. I just need to figure out how to make my War3 folder non-read-only so that I can use WarKeys to edit the CustomKeys file.
