However I have found that the vast majority of people who ask for math or stats are looking for incredibly detailed definitions. For example, a lot of new players who love math come into dota asking how they should use lion's finger or lina's ulti. They sit there outside of the game and try to calculate what nukes they need to cast in what order to get someone low enough to die. Better yet, they try to determine what items the enemy will have. All you really need to do is see that your nuke does 450, if he has around 300 hp he'll probably die. This is a safe and pretty much only useful application of ' math ' [ if you can even call it that ] in dota. Even at the very very top [ maybe chinese players are different, I stopped following seriously before smm 09 ] players do not do this kind of math. Another example is people who try to construct builds RPF-style by looking at things like EHP. It is ONLY useful to know that the concept of EHP exists and that some items that increase EHP will help you out in most cases. It is NOT necessary and not even recommended that you try to sit there and calculate what is the best health per gold. Damage per gold is the best example. People should be buying mkb a shit ton more based on math but its actually almost never bought. If you are at the point where you want graphs and math to improve your play you are probably pretty bad at dota. Edit: To clarify in a nutshell I wasn't being sarcastic. I just strongly believe that knowing important theory that is applicable to dota is way more important than any numbers.

Maliken wrote: We attempted to upgrade the processor on our database boxes. Both of our servers were simultaneously taken offline while the new hardware was being put in place. During this period of time, the file systems on BOTH boxes were destroyed. If this boggles your mind to the point that you can't believe it could happen, you would be in the same exact boat we are! It seems almost statistically impossible, however, it is in fact what happened. This leaves us with no hardware to operate our DBs from until we can get new servers online. The reason for such a catastrophic situation is that this hardware is not the type that is simply sitting around, even in the largest hosting facilities in the world (in which we host at). We are scrambling to bring our systems back online temporarily so you can play the game through other short term methods while we get new hardware online. This is the explanation given by S2. I don't know anything about this stuff but it seems far fetched at best. A number of people who do know about this stuff, and who work in that industry, have posted that this explanation makes no sense. It stands to reason that S2 is either lying, misunderstands the problems, or is unwilling to explicate the situation fully. This thread in particular is interesting, and the OP claims (convincingly) to be in the IT field working with companies far larger and more influential than S2, such as Telefonica. http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=286232 As I'm waiting to go to the airport and don't have much to do today, I'm just following the forums and doing nothing, basically. _________________ I agree with Ack about numbers. When I used to be a medium level player in DOTA I would calculate most of the different nuke damages and figure out when they could be used. Nowadays, I'm far better than I was then and I don't bother with any of that shit. The only time you really want to be looking at that kind of thing is in close situations with lina/pyro, lion/witch, lego/axe, etc. Really the only numbers I memorize these days are mana combo costs, and most of the time only for maxed skills; for other instances I just mouse over the skills and add them up. I remember a few things, like sniper's ult lvl 1 is 266 after base magic armor, or witch's ult is 375 after base magic armor, but that's about it. Most of the time I don't have time/can't be bothered to calculate all the damages and check their hp to see if I can kill them; just do it. After you become more experienced you're rarely if ever wrong about those things based simply on feel. That's probably the only thing I like about the UI mod I used to use, which showed the mana costs without mousing over the skills. But I stopped using mods completely a few months ago (I only used a UI mod anyways) because I think it's better to play vanilla so there's no hiccups when you go into tournament mode games.

I've built computers before, and all I can say is how does upgrading a processor destroy a file system? It does sound a little far fetched.

I might be remembering this wrong, but it seems to me that the story changed significantly somewhere here. On June 22 2011 06:33 daxile wrote: I think the PR team misunderstood the problem, why would they lie about something like that? It seems like its just some minor communication error, i'm sure the problem is fairly big but that's for the tech team at S2 to know about and us to find out. Ok yea, that makes sense. Though that still means that their PR is balls.

There's some miscommunication somewhere in the chain, be it with the server company to S2, S2 to S2, or S2 to us. Couldn't have taken 10 hours to realize your servers are destroyed, can it?

Not a conspiracy, maliken's just totally clueless, that's for sure. I'd rather have a tech guy post what actually happened, and then have maliken do the TLDR:our best provider in the world fucked up, not us, definitely not us, it was a once in a billion event, k? or whatever edit: On a sidenote, since hon is down people should play this: http://www.foddy.net/GIRP.html from the makers of QWOP except this game is actually reasonable
