They'll kill everyone, destroy everything, and burn the entire map to ashes, lol. Giant gyrating flying earthworms made of ash and death will flood your fortress, flanked by demonic peacocks and evil flying monkeys. You can't stop them.

Hi all.......Only been playing about a week after finally giving the game the time and patience it so rightly deserves. Everything was going brilliantly, slowly mining away, gathering food, trading, cutting the odd gem etc...no sign of trouble what so ever, apart from the odd goblin....easy...then WHAM, in trots a Minotaur....my first real encounter, and who does he happen upon first, out of 115 dwarfs he zeros in on my name sake 'redmenace' part time farmer, and weekend warrior. Unfortunately, 'Red' seemed to be on his farming duties this fateful day and was unceremoniously attacked from behind whilst tolling his Plump Helmets. The Minotaur made short work of said dwarf laying waste to every limb, bone and tendon with his vicious horns and even having the time to steal his leather backpack. Leaving 'Red' face down in his own field slowly fertilizing the crops with his life blood the Minotaur proceeds toward Tintatooed my fledgling fortress killing dwarfs left and right with what can only be discribed as a makeshift weapon and possibly a personal two finger salute to me, Reds creator.....7 dwarfs were blundgeoned and beaten to death that day with nothing more than a leather backpack....oh the irony....dwarfs of Tintatooed we salute you...... :-[

Just had a fantastic battle occur between a lone Macedwarf and a Troll:
During a siege one Macedwarf somehow wondered well outside of my siege defense burrows and engaged one-on-one with a Troll. I didn't want to screenshot 15 pages of combat logs, but essentially the troll reached into the soldier's mouth and grabbed him by the tooth. Enraged, as any dwarf would be by such a situation, the Macedwarf swatted the troll's arm away. Not to be deterred the troll grabbed the dwarf by the tooth again, and was again swatted away. This continued nearly a dozen times until a blow broke the Troll's arm. Now that teeth grabbing was no longer an option, he began trying to gore the dwarf with his tusks. One way or another, teeth were a part of his battle plan!
Seeking to disarm his opponent as thoroughly as possible, the dwarf shattered the troll's tusks. Only once the troll succumbed to internal bleeding and collapsed did the Macedwarf finish him off with one crushing blow to the skull.
...
Just like life, it's the little things that really make this game great.

Cave-ins should stop them if done right as will combining water + magma to make obsidian barriers. I believe (but am not sure) that a channel with a wall on the other side can also stop them.

About building destroying: Constructions (walls, staircase, floors, etc.) are still safe, since they're processed the same way natural terrain is for most situations.
So yes, walls should be save. Go ahead - wall in your miner (with some food & water) and let him mine adamantite!

For some reason I have a dwarf in a cage, anyone know how to get him out, he's been in there for seasons. I also have some trolls in cages (instead of my military butchering them they decided to capture them I guess), I've seen the arena's on youtube, but is there a more practical use for them other than making the ground red or training my near legendary military?
Also, another craft that required no part from me for him to make, and it's a legendary... anvil.
|
Haha how'd he get in? I didn't think friendly creatures could set off cage traps anymore o.o;
I'd say build the cage, build a lever for it, and pull it. Might let him out?
He's still alive, right? lol

Ahhh... FUN!
So out of boredom as we haven't been attacked in years, I sent a massive invasion force to siege control of the demonic fortress underground. Poor Wench Annie had been rotting down there far too long for any dorf! So we tore down the containment wall, and 50 of my best steel-clad troops went in to kick some zombie ass. The fighting was brutal. Zombie crundles, (basically cannon fodder), zombie hippos (oh jesus run for your life), and all manner of zombie peacocks and horses and aligators. Crazy. We took a few casualties, but for the most part my elite armydorfs kicked ass, took names, went places, and made friends. It was awesome.
Until the civilians decided to start collecting corpses. Oh man I thought I forbade *everything* in that damned cavern! Shoulda re-built the wall behind me, ugh! Eventually I reach a level of the fortress which is 100% filled with miasma. Not wanting to even bother trying to penetrate such disgusting defenses, I order the retreat. Which is harder than you'd think, eesh. Retreating with enemies still around, and through single-file mazes is hard work for dorfs apparently. Then randomly, I notice my mayor down there.
The Dwarf named "Lord Snow", as he was destined for great things, was originally my most promising military leader. Unfortunately during his first battle he engaged in single combat with a troll, and while he did manage to kill it, was horribly mangled. Now the poor guy can't walk without crutches, is missing an arm, and generally can't do much in the way of defending himself. As an honor, I removed him from the military, (which apparently bothered him, LOL), and made him the new Mayor. Anyway, all of a sudden I see him down in the demonic fortress, right in the middle of the carnage. I quickly check his job. "Store item in bin". Really? Really buddy? This is a warzone, no place for cripples!
I check his inventory. He's still clad in his old armor, (don't ask how he still has a right gauntlet), and is fighting a crundle. What a badass! So I needed a way to get him out of there without dying. With my military attempting to perform a full retreat, this was hard. Then I started noticing other civilians... Oh balls. I had to activate the fortress panic mode, and order everyone to their burrows. We took some casualties, but eventually I got everyone out of the fortress and back to safety. Now I just need a way to re-seal the cavern without anyone getting the bright idea of going back down there to grab their friend's corpses. ZZZZZZ

Tales from wacka-land ( ) + Show Spoiler + I really like having a largely disproportionate army to my population, so when I have about 50 dwarves, i have about 30-40 in the military. Anyway, during this time, i am desieged by a massive amount of Molepeople (Who have actual weapons like spears and stuff). This is all before i get any weapons other than wooden ones i can make myself, so i before the molemen attack, i order my legion of wrestlers and trainingweapon wielding fighters to kill them. About 10 die killing the 11+ molemen, which is ok because if they had attacked on their terms, i would have died. The weird thing is, the killing blow for every single one of them was by one dwarf. I promptly promote him to military leader of his sqaud, and since the traders just arrived, i buy him a copper breast plate, copper shield, and iron axe. Fully equiped, and renamed "Hero of the People", the dwarf continues to train until one fateful day, 5 Blind Cave Ogres come from below...
I send my entire army - they are decimated without killing a single ogre. Except for one who held back for some reason, overviewing the battle, learning his enemies weaknesses, The Hero of the People. With my population near 9 now, and only 1 person in the military, my strategic god dwarf charges in to kill an isolated ogre. The battle continues for 17 pages, eventually the axe is driven through the ogres skull killing him. SUCCESS!!! Now it's time for ogre two who shows up to help his buddy seconds before the killing blow, no problem for the great Hero (Who if he fails, means my fortress falls), he quickly kills the ogre aswell. Now the remaining 3 are all together, but my hero thinks he can do it so he charges in.
34 pages of combat with 3 ogres later, it is mono a ogre-o. The Hero is tired, but the fight rages on valiantly.
On page 18 of the final battle, my hero shoves his axe into the brain of the ogre and it gets stuck (It said he released his grasp or something). Victory has been achieved!... or has it?
The ogre staggers back, raises his right fist and swings towards my dwarf hero's jaw - he cant dodge in time! The punch severs the entire bottom part of his mouth, and knocks him to the ground. Things are looking bad for buddy-bro! The ogre will surely fall soon, but will the Hero be taken with him?
Crawling towards the fallen dwarf, the ogre opens his enormous jaws, and bites the head of the Hero... Crushing the skull and sending the skull into the brain... tearing apart the brain...
In less than a minute, both are dead almost beside each other in a cavern of blood. He gave his life for the fortress and did what no one else could, we built him a massive tomb filled with all the stops, his successor is named "Son of the Hero" and uses the same equipment to slay baddies.
My fortress now has the population of what it did before. thank you hero... thank you.
EDIT: didnt seem as long in preview (Spoilered)

I guess you could say that ogre... bit off more than he could chew YEAAAAHHHHHHHHH.
Epic battle though and what a cool ending. I had no idea that could happen. I also am glad to see I'm not the only one who loves making a large military haha.

Okay my fellow liquids.. I got a simple question..
As i'm using the Lazy Newb Pack with Ironhand Graphic pack and Lazy Newb keys. There wont be any real changes of the game, other than the graphics and hotkeys?
If so, then i should be able to use all the information in the wiki, and it would still count?

Okay so stairways are confusing me.
If I put a downward stairway above an unexplored area, it reveals one square, to which i can go down and build an up-down stairway, and everything's great.
But what if the area is already explored? I put my downward stairway above an explored area, and it builds fine. But when I try to put a down-up stairway on the level below, nothing happens. Any help? >.<

Okay when you say unexplored, I think you're actually referring to an untouched layer of rocks/minerals/whatever. Consequently an explored area is one that is already dug or an empty layer.
If that is the case then you cannot carve a non-existent layer. In such a case, you're going to need to construct your stairs out of something (typically stone). You can do so by b->C->u / b->C->d / b->C->x for upward, downward and upward-downward stairs respectively.

Yes, everything on the wiki will still count.
The lazy newb key bindings just allow you to play the game without a number pad. According to the pack these are the alternate key bindings
ALTERNATE KEYBINDINGS "LazyNewb" Keybindings:
UP Z LEVEL: "," and "<" DOWN Z LEVEL: "." and ">" Menu Select UP: "-" Menu Select DOWN: "=" Menu Select PAGE UP: "_" (shift + "-") Menu Select PAGE DOWN: "+" (shift + "=") One-Step: "/" Zoom In: "]" (and mouse-wheel) Zoom Out: "[" (and mouse-wheel)
So sometimes I guess they keys the wiki tells you to use may not be exactly the same for those keys and any other keys that are usually on the number pad. Hopefully this helps.

Ah yeah I think I get it. I didn't realize the basic d-j d-i stairways were dug out of existing rock. Makes sense now that I think about it.
On a side note, I think this game is trolling me. 5 sedimentary layers, dug out all of them (as a result got several legendary+5 miners running around), not a whisper of coal. What nonsense is this >.< I did order some from the caravan but I think I picked the wrong thing cause they brought coal blocks which can't be smelted apparently. I made sure to request actual coal instead of blocks for next year but I'll have to wait a whole year before I don't have to cut trees... bah. My new fortress#2 is so great too, 57 dwarves, 50 of them are ecstatic and the only reason 7 are only 'happy' is because they just showed up as a new migration wave. Big improvement over my first fortress, hehe. Shame about the coal though

I created a new world that has LOTS of metals. I embark at a place with apparently deep soil, shallow metals and deep metals. I have 2 layers of soil. The rest is igneous extrusive(basalt as far as the eye can see) and I have not found a single ore of metal. Not just no iron. No metal AT ALL. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So angry. Why can't I just get an embark with some soil, sedimentary layers and lots of metal? WHY!!!!!!!!!

Also all caravans bring wood with them, and usually cheap at 3 per wood. Even crappy gems can get you a nice supply of wood.
