I've been experimenting with training methods lately, particulary for archers / marksdorfs. Originally I would have them set up as a military squad, actively training on targets. Now though I've set them as hunters instead, and it seems they learn faster.
Does anyone know if this is indeed a quicker way to level them up? Yeah it's really good, until a really strong monster wanders onto the map. Then they end up shooting it three times, which does nothing, and get torn apart. So, if you are going to use this method make sure to not let them hunt in caverns and always keep a watch out for monsters on the unit screen.

So I started playing after reading this thread, doing well so far, but I'm stumped on how to mine adamantine since its basically in the middle of a magma sea . Any tips on how to get to it?
|
^Thanks.
Yeah I imagine that'll be a problem. They dont seem to have any problems tearing Ettins & alike apart, but enemies in numbers, like a bunch of goblins / elves can cause problems if they get close enough.
The biggest issue seems to be drowning, I dont know what it is but they just seem to love standing around on ice in the spring time, very annoying! Think I have the timings right now though so fingers crossed we dont lose anymore....

It basicly forms columns along the z axis, you need to find the uppermost tip of it and then mine down through the middle, you should be able to get quite a bit of it whilst still avoiding the magma.

From what I can see of it, it all borders magma but i'll look for the tip and see if i can find some thats not bordering it.

I guess maybe that's possible and you have just been unlucky, I haven't played for long enough to really know. Perhaps someone esle can shed some light?

It usually forms pillars of 4x4 tiles. Is some of it embedded into a wall? If so, dig down into that wall from a level higher up above the magma sea, then into the wall where the pillar is.
After that, prepare to reap the awesomeness that is adamantite!

Also if you haven't mined out the area above it you can create a cave in around it put some dirt around it so you can mine freely.
Also I had a child enter a fey mood and create a bone hood with spikes of bone. I fear for the child. On the plus side it's now being worn by my most prominent speardwarf.

OOo, i just had a fey mood weaponsmith grab a forge and take gold!
Please a warhammer!

And he makes a gold shoe, not a pair of shoes, a single gold shoe.... super!

one of my clothiers once made me an epic cloth bag. that was pure brilliance as well. It's standing in my hospital now. >.>

One of my dwarves made an epic steel door once. I locked him inside the workshop with it until he died. Teach you to waste my steel.

Artifact < place-able items> are always useful though because you can make your dwarves happy with it. It's the stupid stuff like artifact Steel Scepters that deserve retribution.

Definately. Place that door at your main meeting area, and your dwarves will be happy from having had a chance of seeing such a piece of quality craftsdwarfship. If you also make the door internal and as thus a part of the meeting area, it should increase the room value, which makes the room that much more attractive to those using it.

Hm, I tried getting into this game several times. Never ever understood it properly though Could anyone help me live on skype or something? Preferably EU..

Hmmmm so my current above-ground fortress is coming along nicely. We're putting up the walls for the keep, (which will be the area housing all our starter dorfs, the later rabble will be outside but still within the eventual city walls), but I'm running in to a minor problem.
Since all my dorfs live in houses, they complain of noise when they sleep. I hope that doesn't become a problem eventually... lol

Haha, i dont think it should so long as you can balance it oput enough with nice stuff like engraved walls and floors, at least thats teh way i understand it.
I've actually taken to leaving idlers outside hanging around at the starting wagon for as long as possible too, they seem to stay really happy!

You can't engrave constructions. Chances are nearby construction is what's causing the bad thoughts and once you build the keep fully your dwarves will stop complaining.
