I'm playing FF XIV. GI is like dumbed down version of it so all the options and such didn't feel all that impressive to me.

FF XIV and Genshin are two completely different games.
Genshin isn't a MMO.
And genshin's open world experience is far superior to FFXIV.
FFXIV is still a great game, but honestly it's like saying that FFXIV is a better game than Doom or Starcraft - they're not really comparable.

"You can ignore the gacha mechanics" is true of every gacha game when it launches. They build the base game to be F2P friendly to get their initial player base. The "gacha requirement" always kicks in when they add endgame content post-release, and limited-time events are the bread and butter of basically every game in the genre.

Gonna wait and see on this one. The gacha rates are terrible, and the game is still in its honeymoon period where its impossible to evaluate how gacha-heavy the endgame content will be because that content literally doesn't exist yet.

There's 50+ hours of enjoyment to be had here, easily without any limiting factors at all, right now.
It's pretty clear right now that Gacha will not be the limiting factor for endgame content, the limitng factor will be how much you're willing to grind for resources to improve the characters you have. I will admit though that currently the game doesn't really let you grind (even with spending money) properly once you hit the higher ranks, but there's no way this won't change in the future.
I don't believe you.

That may as well be the case someday. But right now I can only advice anyone to play this game. It is worth it. Remember this isn't an MMO, there is no PVP, no ranks, no ladder. There is no need to rush to whatever endgame, there is no need to pay for anything.
And if/ when they implement something for the worse, there is always CP 2077 only 4 weeks away :D

EDIT: I may as well be the only one that didn't know that, but you can upgrade your abilities... lol

Despite me bashing the game very hard on the Resin front, I wholeheartedly agree that there is no reason to not try this game. It's like 99% soloable with F2P characters that you're given from the start. The other 1% is now the admittedly pretty buggy lag/connection-wise CO-OP event that forces you to look for teammates to even begin it.

And yeah the skill upgrades are no joke... farming the special books is way worse than farming other mats because the domains only drop like 1 book as opposed to 2-3 crafting mats you get for weapons lol.

I'll be sticking with this game until JAN 21', because I have hopes for this game and in miHoYo actually waking up and fixing the Resin system in place. If they can't do it by then, I'll jump ship.

I think at minimum it's a fun time-killing open-world game that you can follow the major content releases (ie. each new part of the world) for story/treasure chests/achievements/etc. The main story doesn't require that heavy an investment in character advancement (thus far) anyways, it wasn't THAT difficult (that one AR30 dungeon being a real pain aside). Mostly means you'll come back every however many months, but frankly games like FF14 are like that anyways.

It's been on my radar since it got all the buzz, mostly because F2P so why not, and the open-world / exploration looks addicting (favorite part of BotW which a lot of people are comparing to lol).

The only part I'm uneasy about going in is the reroll complaint a few other people mentioned. I'm sure it's mostly personal preference or min-max, but I wouldn't even know who to shoot for even if I DID feel up to abusing the reroll stuff. Is there 1-2 specific characters to keep an eye out for that carry hard, if I don't have an affinity for anyone in particular? Can characters roll at different levels/tiers so people fish for the same few characters but just wait until they hit that lucky 5-star? Etc...

Maybe someone's explained this already, but yeah I'm thinking about trying it maybe this weekend and this part is my only reservation. Because I'd really not like to feel inclined to spend cash after just a few hours because I happened to RNG the wrong characters.

rerolling isn't that bad, and you don't need to do it, it's just a way to get the characters you want to try out. Pretty much any character in the game is fun in their own right and capable of sustaining you through the entire game.
Buying the pass isn't worth it, and you don't need it at all.
The resin thing is an issue, but it only starts being an issue after 50+ hours of gameplay. It is also on the developer's radar now, and they're compiling player feedback on the matter, so there's a good chance it will get changed soon.
What I'm trying to say is, even without the criticisms that have been laid out, this is the least p2w free game I've seen in a very very long time and there's pleeeeenty of time to be spent here without any drawbacks at all.

It's not that the gatcha mechanic is good or bad, I was thinking about downloading it so I decided to take a look at the thread and literally every post in the first page is talking about the gacha mechanics, and not the actual game mechanics itself. The game could be amazing, but judging from what you guys are talking about, there is no game just gacha. Think SC2. Most of the posts are about playing SC2, not about paying for skins or playing to get a portrait. The impression I got from you guys make it seem like there is nothing enjoyable to play the game but gacha mechanics.

https://genshin.gg/tier-list

Generally, 5-star characters will be the most powerful, but as it is in anime-style gacha, roll forr your waifu/husbando rather than tier lists. I rerolled about 30 times until I got Diluc + Venti, but that was my personal goal.

You kinda want 1 main "DPS" character that you'll spend the majority time on, spamming light attacks and heavy attacks. Keep this guy/gal up to par and you'll roll almost all the content with them. That can be Fishl, Diluc, Keqing, Xiangling or the like, with Diluc I guess being a fan favourite.

The other 3 characters will be there to support your main DPSer with their elemental skills, which you'll be chaining for massive damage. A lot of people also run a dedicated healer (usually water), because while you can eat during combat, it just breaks the flow of combat and eating has a cap. Most popular healer is Barbara (water) because her drop rate is upped right now, so you'll almost definitely get her.

Fire beats ice, Ice beats electro, electro beats water, water beats fire. The other element are called anemo (wind), it generally supports the other elements in some way like Wind+Fire = Big explosion, etc. and geo (earth) which funnily enough beats itself and gives you a protection bubble with a set amount of HP.
But elements also react with one another, if you can get enemies wet by applying water to them, and then using an ice ability, you can freeze them in place for a few solid seconds. This is the best crowd control right now, and if you have the good water/ice users that have BIG AoEs, you basically freeze dozen of mobs in place for a heck of a long time.

If you can get enemies wet and use a lightning spell, you'll electrocute them and it'll bounce around interrupting enemies and dealing good damage between them.

That tier list is pretty garbo (at least from an end-game perspective) - every character is viable/powerful, just some take more specialized builds or investment. Ning and Noelle are super low rated on that list for example but Ning (though constellation-dependent) has the highest burst in the game (can one-shot bosses) and you can find DPS Noelles vids (where she smacks stuff for 2-4k damage per hit endlessly). Sucrose is a mini-Venti with swirl on her ult, Beidou's a filthy DPS tank (and her ult is nuts), and Lisa's a debuffing queen. Benny is considered one of the best support characters in the entire game, and XingQiu is arguably the best hydro DPS character in the game at the moment (absolutely no idea why that site calls him support).

I mostly say this to clarify that every character is really good, and so the only thing I'd aim for via rolls is breadth of characters.

On the topic of gameplay, barely cleared Abyssal 10-3 last night before the reset. Those Trickseeds are literal deflatable basketballs of endless HP. Going to have to figure out how to improve my single-target DPS considering even my Keqing couldn't clear them effectively. Also needing to farm some Agents/Seeds/Mages endlessly for some days to upgrade weapons... not even thinking about Talents yet. So much for not having much to do, hah.

For me this game has turned to be a really fun time sink in the evening. The fighting, open world and grinding is just fun.

Definitely gonna stay f2p though, although I would spend 10 bucks if I could, just to support because it's such a good product.
If they improved the Resin system it would actually be perfect for what it is.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

"No game just gacha" is something that literally nobody here thinks.

I'd say if you want to do the rerolling stuff, go for Diluc. He is probably the THE carry that can be geared super easy and works with everything.

Almost AR30 now. Still having tons of fun while also really feeling the resin wall now. But since I only play about an hour everyday anyway , it's not that big of a deal

You're also going to feel the non-resin item wall soon, so some of these routes might help (and kill some more time):

Frankly once you hit skill level 6 you get blocked by a weekly boss mat that is also random (not sure exactly how many types of item they have/drop): https://i.imgur.com/KFl7CNh.png

Seems like a lot of work :/

Can anybody explain Spiral Abyss in lames term? I did 3-3 a while back to get Xiangling and didn't bother going back yet since I thought I level up first. Now I read there is some sort of weekly / fortnite reset and stuff and you should do it weekly or something. A lot of contradicting informations on the internets.

Also I have limited playtime and trying over and over some hard floors could take a big bite out of it, so is it worth it?

It's a lot of work in the sense that there's "stuff to do" - the next patch (11/11-ish) will bring more stuff on the side.

Spiral is the current end-game content, but you don't "need" to do it. The rewards are just artifacts and some primogen/mora, but nothing earth-shattering. As giving it a whirl doesn't take Resin, if you enjoy it and find trying to put together team comps to clear for fun, then it's something to do. If you don't, then there's no need to fret over it.

In a nutshell:
  • Spiral Corridor (floors 1-8) never reset, so the floors themselves are static and the rewards are one-time (4* artifact for clearing, 5* artifact for clearing certain floors, and money/primogems for hitting 3/6/9 stars).
  • Spiral Abyss (floors 9-12) reset twice every month (day 1 and day 15 or whatnot), so the floors themselves usually change enemies, and the rewards reset for artifacts and some extra money/primogems if you can consistently clear.
  • There's a "blessing" that gives you some help/playstyle boost when applicable that resets every month? Right now it's this meh shield blessing where if you get a shield within the ring it boosts it by like 2x or something.

Check this out if you ever thought about using your resin to farm trinkets below AR 45
Absolutely broken, the stats. Why can a set that boosts anemo damage% roll fire damage% mainstat?
They really need to put some restrictions on the artifacts so they don't brick immediately from the garbo main stat.

So guys, just farm those weapon upgrade mats and skill upgrade books and don't waste your resin with trinket farming unless you're really the 1% of the playerbase AR45+

I'm gonna skip Klee's banner since I have Diluc, and wait for Zhongil or Xiao banners (I need a good spear user) and also I need someone who can use a sword like QiQi or Keqing

Thx mate!

I'm a bit sad about the Venti banner, was at 75 rolls when it got replaced. Needed only 15 more for the 5 star pity roll
Not gonna roll any in the Klee banner. Saving up for 11.11 and the new chars like Zonghli and Childe

AR 31 right now. Still haven't explored the map completely. Need a few more geoculus for the 9 temple thingy, hope I will find enough in the dark corners. I read with 1.1 there will be a mechanic to store unused Resin and a compass for geo/anemoculi!
My goal right now is to reach ~AR36 by 11.11 which should be doable

WHAT OTHER CHANGES WILL BE ADDED IN GENSHIN IMPACT 1.1?
In addition to the aforementioned expansions, Genshin Impact version 1.1 is said to bring numerous gameplay adjustments as allegedly seen in the current 1.1 Beta server.

Anemoculus Sync Stone, Geoculus Sync Stone. These would likely be used to change the Traveller's element on the go.
Geo and Anemo Finder Compass. Likely used to locate missing offerings to the statue of the seven.
Wind capturing bottle. Allows you to store Ameno seeds so to generate a windfield anywhere.
Pocket Teleport Anchor. Used to place a teleporter anywhere on the map. Only one can be active at a time and it lasts seven days.
Condensed Resin. By Condensing Resin, you can get more rewards for the same amount of work. One Condensed Resin is worth 40 Original Resin,
Type 30 Portable Nutrient Bag. This would be used to place food in for quick access.
New Dungeon called Golden House. This would seemingly include a boss fight against Childe.

Every mentioned addition would be an exciting change for Genshin Impact. Original Resin is what allows players to complete leylines, making valuable assets for grinding players. If that could be condensed to have more value, it would be much easier to progress in Genshin Impact.

If these are real changes to expect in the next update, Genshin Impact could become drastically more expansive in a short time.

the resin imprevements are not good enough...
To make condensed resin you still have to log in and condense it, and if you have time to log in you might aswell just do your resin tasks, they take less than 10 minutes..
plus it in no way increases the resin gain for players overall, progression will still be really slow.. =/

hope there's more coming in that department.
I don't believe you.

Yes and no.
For the more casual players among us like me, storing Resin like this is has actually huge benefits. I can store Monday - Thursday and play all my Resin on the weekend. Storing can be done with mobile no problemo, but I hate actually playing on my mobile. Also I can log in early morning, store some and when I get the chance to play in the evening I have 120+ at my disposal.
They still need to do some sort of task that regenerates Resin tough, for the more hardcore players. Like somthing really difficult and maybe a bit time consuming gets you these resin fragments at least once a day

I got Klee.

Apparently pity roll carries over from special banner (Venti to Klee in this case)
Not sure if I should build her yet. All my chars are lvl 60 and building a new one from scratch does take a lot of time and money.
