Ahh, Blood Bowl, the good old game of truly fantasy american football...
I'm creating this thread because I know there are plenty of BB fans here (we've played some TL tournaments after all) and the game itself is having a resurrection. There are two digital games and the tabletop version has been rebooted by Games Workshop (company we all hate right now).
In any case, reboot of the tabletop version has also increased the number of players that are playing the digital version of the game. If you're new to this, it is the prime time to get into the game/hobby.
First let's talk about differences between the digital and tabletop:
- Not all teams are present in the digital version: BB1:CE features 23 teams, BB2:LE features 16 teams, tabletop features 24/27 teams.
- Odds are not the same: In any digital version 2+ with reroll will show as 93% chance of success while in tabletop you know it's more akin to 80% chance of failure (forget statistics, this is how it usually goes when rolling actual dice, more elves die on 2+/2+ dodge than being bashed by enemy team)
That's pretty much it. The digital version is a pretty good translation of the game into digital format (just don't rely on AI, it sucks donkey balls).
Personally I strongly recommend this game (digital or tabletop) to anyone who likes strategy with a little bit of fun or people that need to work on their anger management (there are games where everything goes well for your opponent and nothing goes well for you, RNG at its finest and you need to deal with it). Seriously, if there's like 3% chance that you'll lose to something quite improbable in this game it accounts for 90% of situations. Your job as a coach is to turn those 3% into 0%.
As usual Games Workshop dropped the ball and they did a great job of bringing the game back from the dead and at the same time awful job at releasing miniatures for it. Thre are multiple companies that make a leaving just by seeling BB miniatures while GW releases cheaper minis that aren't as good, you get duplicates and you don't even get everything you want in a team (as opposed to their competition, which release way more creative stuff, more expensive but it gets you everything you'll ever need).
In any case, if you'd like to get into the most awesome realm of Blood Bowl, here are some tips for starters:
- Pick a normal team to start and learn: Seriously, go for Dark Elves, Orcs or Necromantic. This will teach you how to play the game properly. Of those the ease of getting how the game works is Orcs > Dark Elves > Necromantic. Each of those teams will offer you a completely different gameplay experience and teach you most of the mechanics (Necromantic being the strongest but hardest to learn in the long run).
- Learn your out-of-game stuff: This is required in tabletop but can be easily missed in digital versions since the game keeps track of those for you. Be mindful of possible kick-off events, weather effects, how fame, cheerleaders and assistant coaches interact with them etc. I've seen people lose tournaments because they forgot to account for those.
- Don't get discouraged: RNG in this game is everywhere, but don't be worried. You know a good player when you see someone minimizing the RNG factor (make all moves that do not require any rolls first then make moves that have built-in re-rolls, leave the riskiest stuff for last, etc.). Even the best fall to bad luck at dice. Just learn to accept it and go with the flow. I know it's hard to see your Kharzag the Destroyer, who has played for your team for 20 matches and accumulated a ton of exp and skills die by failing a going-for-it roll but that's BB for you.
If you have any questions just ask them here and I'll try to answer. I'm not the best player around, been to a couple of TT tournaments but never won any etc.
