the lead designer of C&C: Rivals has less than 1000 followers on twitter and no other social media to speak of. This can't be a good sign for the game. Are there customer-facing C&C:Rivals employees//people with a substantial following ?

The core gameplay is fun, but they took 1 good concept and then slapped rpg elements onto it with its only goal to get people hooked/addicted to crate/lootbox hunting and overall optimize rts genre for micro-transactions.

looks like Technique's analysis of how the game play experience changes as EA starts fishing for cash from recurrent players is pretty much correct.

Nice but not transcendent game as much as most mobile games. Mechanics simple and fun but redundant to death and especially too much temptation to pay for not taking a week to do something that should take an hour.

Having played around 250 games now (Diamond 3 for both GDI and Nod), I’ve only run into 2 games where I’ve felt “wow there’s nothing I can do”. It’s been pretty fun experiencing different metas in different leagues and altering strats accordingly. Lot of clutch moments doing things like using a harvester to cap/contest a point for the last few seconds to win a game. Only complaints I have so far...

1) The Rivals Champions mode is where you’re most likely to run into issues where it feels unfair due to lack of balance for unit levels; however it’s not really an issue until you hit Diamond (and to a lesser extent Platinum), and it’s only every 2 1/2 weeks.

2) You’ll occasionally run into opponents whose player levels are much higher than yours, and they’ll be able to use different units and commanders against you. The commanders are acceptable to deal with, but Nod has a unit (scarab) that is unlocked later that completely changes the meta due to its strengths and weaknesses, and running into it earlier than expected will feel very unfair/punishing when you’re not ready for it. However, this has only happened twice to me so far.

Overall I’m still having fun (average a 70% win rate with both races despite frequent level disadvantages). If you’re smart and adapt to the rules you can thrive.

Oh also I’m F2P.

The game won't be good because the lead dev doesn't have enough twitter followers?
Is this what gaming has come to?
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

It's just jimmyjraynor. He is just a wannabe journalist. When everyone else is happily talking about the game, he posts predictions of how he thinks the game will do economically. It's best to talk around him.

given the PM i just sent to Seeker a few minutes ago its interesting you made a message like this just a few minutes later. spooky.

For the record, in half of my post I discussed C&C Rivals game play. The other half of my post is business related and if you want to have an extended discussion about the business side of this game I'd prefer to discuss the business side of things in here

This inflammatory chatter is a bit over the top. I've made my points about the C&C Rivals game. If you want to address them directly go for it ... the game is interesting to discuss. If you want to get personal please PM me. Continuing to discuss me, personally, in this thread is off topic.

Interesting. I might give this game a shot to take a break from my Into the Breach runs.

Sweet! Need more active people in the TeamLiquid alliance (just 2 out of 8 of us right now). A few other notes...

1) Games last about 5-8 minutes.

2) For those interested in learning specifics about the game, there are plenty of EA sponsored videos on different units/strategies if you look up Rivals Commander Training on YouTube.

3) The replay watching system is excellent; there is always a selection of random ladder games you can watch from each league and see their player level, unit level, and unit layouts. You can also view all replays of other players in your alliance (basically guild) and all replays of those on the leaderboards. Thanks to this, it’s very easy (compared to other games) to develop meta-analyses and learn from experts if you’re committed.

4) As a F2P player, progress is made by completing daily bounties (5), which are completed by playing 5 games each of GDI and Nod, using a certain amount of a random GDI and Nod unit, and using a specific commander ability. These can be randomly cycled through using an easy to acquire resource so it can fit your current unit/commander layouts. XP progress is essentially limited to 10 games a day. I highly recommend only playing 10 games a day, as otherwise you will progress too quickly through the ladder system and run into “unfair” matches much sooner and more frequently.

5) Progress can also be made by donating cards you don’t need to others in your alliance, which means that being in a full, active guild will help you level more quickly. AKA more people should play so I don’t have to abandon TeamLiquid!

I absolutely love Rivals.
It's the first game since Broodwar that gets that itch in me.
So, besides occasionally playing Broodwar and watching all tournaments, Rivals is great for me at work (:D), when travelling, and generally when not having much time.

Same things also brought other Broodwar players to Rivals -- among them Liquid'HayprO.

I started a blog on Rivals (e.g. to give new players useful info, as there is no Liquipedia) and for this, Hayder was so nice and do an interview. So if you're curious about Rivals, or what HayprO has been up to, check it out:
