Command and Conquer: Rivals has been out for a while but public launched on Dec 4. I had my doubts but decided to give it a shot as an RTS fan. The games just last a couple minutes with a good amount of micro.
From wiki: + Show Spoiler +Command and Conquer: Rivals is a one-versus-one competitive multiplayer real-time strategy game. The player can play as Rivals, GDI or Brotherhood of Nod, with each faction offering unique abilities. Players are tasked to control platforms surrounding the missile silo. If the player manages to gain control of more platforms than the enemy for a fixed time, the missile will launch and obliterate the opponent's base.
Had my doubts about it being pay to win but its good to know the devs are at least making an effort. To be honest unlocking all the units feels a bit grindy but some of the top decks out there only use units you unlock pretty early on. Heres a link from the dev days on it
I'm freakin having a blast! I made an alliance- which are basically 30-person clans where you can hang out/donate cards. Was hoping to get a few TL members to join! Hope its okay i took 'TeamLiquid'
Alliance ID: 9rce0uva (i'm not sure if you actually need this)
TL;DR Get C&C: Rivals and join 'TeamLiquid' alliance. Its fun, I promise
|
Yeah its pretty fun. my first RTS games were C&C. It is really cool to play with units like titan, wolverines and attack bikes!
Edit: my ingame name is Spammer4, I will definitely join the TL alliance!

A friend of mine who played SC2 for 5 yeas says C&C:Rivals is quite enjoyable although quite different from a traditional RTS. He was a Masters leaguer in SC2. He also played many other RTS games.
Greg Black is the lead designer of C&C:Rivals. The guy has been working in the RTS genre for at least 10 years. He worked on SC2 for 5 years. I'm pretty sure he left Blizzard to become the lead designer of this game. The guy is good. https://twitter.com/TheGregBlack

From what I can see of videos, it is not an RTS.
|
I wouldnt call it rts, feels more like a micro ums
|
Hmm...played a few games, it feels like you're playing a MOBA, but instead of controlling heros, you build/control units. Really wish units had abilities or if they added a waypoint system or sometehing..

Way to destroy one of my beloved franchises

SC2 wasn't good... SC2 was amazing and continues to be a great game. it got better when a bunch of guys from EALA's C&C team ended up working on it... including Greg Black. SC2 is an absolute masterpiece. Greg Black's work on Red Alert 3 was very good... its integration of naval play was brilliant.
the only reason i bother chiming in on this stuff is that the extended , vicious , obscene personal attacks against him are unwarranted and distasteful. i provide a different perspective to even things out.
the amount of energy some people spend complaining about something they hate playing is... kinda fucked.

Downloaded C&C Rivals yesterday and unlike my expectations it is a lot of fun. Haven't been able to stop playing since (I have a significantly higher rate of toilet breaks at work today).

This looks pretty fun. Just downloaded and requested to join!

To be honest I have no idea why Rivals gets so much hate, the game is amazing for a mobile RTS and I don't think any mobile game comes close in terms of actual RTS game play. You have all the fundamentals of an rts game: Micro, unit counters, eco vs rushing vs teching, Air units vs Ground vs infantry. We even have freaking flame tank rushes!!
In addition, as a hardcore C&C fan the aesthetic of the game is amazing, it is so amazing to have all the iconic units from the tib war games fighting altogether, I mean we have so many classic tib sun units like Cyborg, titan, disruptor in addition to classic C&C 3 units like flame troopers and ofc bikes. Dude we even have Seth as a playable general!! And General Solomon(maybe my favorite character after Kane)
I could go on about this game but the main thing I want to say is this: Don't just blindly jump on internet hate wagons without any actual understanding of the game, yes is is not a classic rts, yes everyone hates EA. I can totally understand why people don't like mobile games, tbh this is the first mobile game that I have ever installed on my phone. However, in my opinion credit where it is due, Rivals is pretty great.

At least the hate train has actual arguments. But hey, have fun and make sure to reply back in this topic once you play vs level 15 units with your level ~9 units when you first hit tiberium league.
But but but you can win with lower level units - yeah sure... you could potentially also win a knife vs gun fight, doesn't mean its fair.
The core gameplay is fun, but they took 1 good concept and then slapped rpg elements onto it with its only goal to get people hooked/addicted to crate/lootbox hunting and overall optimize rts genre for micro-transactions.
I'm sure it's going to be much more profitable than any cnc rts game could be on the pc as well... so R.I.P. for any future EA rts games on the pc (besides those remasters - but lets be serious, who's really waiting on a cnc 95 remaster?).
edit: And one more thought, you're never going to get caught up as free to play player with the players who buy coins/crates and what not. EA made sure of that by capping your ability to earn coins for wins of to ~10 games a day (which is like 20 minutes worth of play), then you get the message that you reached the daily limit. And the devs will tell you that's because they don't want the players who can only play like 15 minutes a day to fall behind... deceitful stuff like that brews hate, it's normal.

Just because Rivals is a good game that will likely make money does not mean a good cnc PC game will not get made. I would argue the opposite, if EA sees that the cnc brand is still popular, than they are more likely to make a real game in the future.
I totally understand how people are annoyed by the FTP mechanics, so far my experience as a f2p player has been positive, we shall see how I feel once I reach higher ranks(Currently I am plat3 with my highest tier units at 6).

i think EA rehired a bunch of guys from Petroglyph.. or maybe they just hired the entire studio outright...in order to do a "remaster" of a few early C&C games.
I highly suspect those same long time former Westwood and EA employees will be pitching EA management hard on a new C&C game for PC.

How long did it take you to get to Tiberium League?

So far i haven't really felt the pain of falling behind with level 6/7 units vs paid players, but then again i'm nowhere near tiberium league yet. The fact that you were able to get to tiberium league as a free player makes me think theres a ton fun to be had to get up to that point. If i was playing enough to get up there, I wouldn't mind shelling out $5 or $10 on a game I've played that much.
I guess it starts becoming a problem when you're trying to climb the leaderboards but theres a lot of room for improvement before I hit that wall. So far I don't mind if i end up getting matched with worse players higher level than me. Call it a small handicap.
The few top players (they've got twitch stream vids i took a look at) mentioned that they were free players I think, so its definitely doable, though I'm sure they play a ton. Being in an alliance definitely helps with getting cards you need to boost up those unit levels too.

Found an article on it.

Getting to gold is really easy free. Around this level, it becomes more difficult if you don't have level'd cards or if you don't have the right cards, but it's still doable...just extremely annoying.
|
I've reached Tiberium and the game feels like complete shit to play 8/10 games now. I've only got level 8/9 units and everyone I face has 11s, and most of the time it doesn't even trigger a challenge battle so yea... not very fun at all anymore. It was good during the climb but once you hit tib if you're not ready to pay it becomes a major drag.
@lychee not sure which streamers you watched but afaik Alicia is the only top player who is f2p and she's been playing 24/7 since pre-alpha in june, there is no way for a f2p at launch to ever catch up to that.
|
Ah that makes sense. I guess catchup is a nogo. Ah well im still only plat so i guess ill just enjoy the game until i hit that level wall.
|
My suggestion for anyone playing would be to forcibly league gate yourself, eg stay in tier 1 of whatever league you're in and make sure you don't advance until your unit levels are at the max for that league. You will have to throw a lot of matches(just do your bounties while doing this) but some of my alliance members are currently doing this and are having a lot more fun for the rest of the matches they don't throw.
