Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith
When dominions 4 came out I thought I'd get a few single player games out of it at most, but 200+ hours later I'm very excited to see the next iteration of Dominions announced.
Dom 5 seeks to build upon the success of Dom 4, a fantasy 4x turn-based strategy game. Players in Dominions take on the role of a pretender god, whose mission is to ascend and become the pantokrator - achieving full godhood. The game has a tremendous number of different factions, units, as well as an expansive magic and crafting system. No two games of Dominions will be remotely similar as there is such a huge diversity of play styles and fully customizable maps and factions.

Players can recruit army units, which could consist of things like crossbowmen, centaurs, or heavy cavalry. Each faction has a unique menagerie of units inspired by things like ancient mythology and modern fantasy. Also unique to each faction are a cadre of various commanders and mages. Commanders lead armies in battle while mages can be used to craft, research, or brought in to cast powerful spells during combat. The most powerful unit you'll posses is your pretender god, who spreads his or her dominion across the lands, changing it in their own image.
Combat is automated; players give orders to their commanders and squadrons before entering combat and the battle plays out. Better commanders are less likely to retreat. Mages and pretenders can use powerful magic to turn the tide of combat. Priests can cast blessings to bestow bonuses on sacred units. In Dom 5, combat will happen in real-time, a change from the turn based system of Dom 4.
Players seek to conquer the map and can build structures like fortresses or alchemy labs to provide a boost to production or allow mages to perform rituals.

Major changes in Dom 5
Bless effects are now unique and can be specifically chosen at the start of the game. Some blessings require an incarnate pretender god, less powerful ones usually do not.
Real Time combat: combat now is simulated in real-time. All units can attack at once. The devs say large battles will be settled more quickly and organically in the new system.
Random map generation has returned to Dominions. Seasons will now have a greater effect on the map and on combat (i.e. heat and summertime make fire spells more effective).
Recruitment points are a new resource in Dom 5, and is generated by population. Castles now start at the lowest level and can be upgraded over time.

So how much interest is there for a game once Dom 5 drops? It's sadly pretty close to holidays/finals, but maybe we can get one off the ground.

Since no one has made a game post I guess I'll kick stuff off to declare the organising of the OFFICIAL TLXIV.
Start date: AROUND DECEMBER 15TH - Game will start around December 15th about right after anyone's finals week. Expect to play through the end of December holiday weeks(we might do a couple day extension over the 25th itself). Be ready to have nations/map picked around the 10th.

Well after rubbing 3 cap rings and only getting 5 total land provinces in tl12 during the first year, then only having 9~ provinces in TL13 on another 11/12 provinces per player game while others were getting 15~ in each game;I haven't found myself to be a fan of the prov count per players in the past few games. I will clarify definitely leaning towards 15 provinces per players, rather that 20.

Yep, Dom 5 is out on steam. I have started a random map game as Lanka vs AI. There are some new pretenders, and the blessings are interesting. The new combat is a big improvement and the GUI displays a lot more relevant information.

Last game in Dominions 4 was the late age game I hosted, that was TL13. As for naming conventions, if we wanna do a new naming convention since its a new game now is the time to suggest it(Resetting to TLI, or some different naming convention to differentiate from dom 4?).

Updated my old LA Koatekw mod to work with Dominions 5. Eventually I'll add the WIP pretenders that never made it in and then MA and EA versions of the nation. Before Dominions 6, I promise. >.>

Hey everyone, I could use a second opinion. Someone with some MP experience with my mod (in Dom 4) said they had trouble recruiting more than 5 of the Niwaskw mages (the biggest ones) by year 5, which is much less than I intended, as they are *filling* the role of extra buff STR cap only mages. They're kind of expensive both in gems and gold, require construction 2, and can only be fully "operational" by mid-fall/early winter. This makes pricing them not very straightforward. If someone could take a look and weigh in on that it would be very helpful.

If anyone has any map suggestions to make that can accommodate (atleast) 3 water nations let me know, I'm busy with the my last week of school so looking for maps is low on my priority list at the moment.

I'd like there to be a larger number of tier1 thrones, to decrease the chances that few critical huge thrones will spawn underwater. That said, being Marignon, I'm pretty biased. :D
I'd be up for an even earlier cataclysm, I mean let's be honest, who wants to play this game past turn 80? :D

As I said earlier I want to be closer to 15 provinces but it depends on what premade map can be found. I'd prefer a nice premade map but I'm not looking until I'm done with school stuff(this is my finals week, I should be finishing everything Friday) but with the high amount of water nations I may look into selecting a random gen map with 15 provinces per player if I can't find a nice premade one.
If I do end up doing a random gen map about how much water provinces per water nation do people think would be right?
On Cataclysm It seems like around 60/70 turns is a nice number.
For thrones, I think it might be better to do all lvl 1 or lvl 2 thrones so there isn't a side in the land/water split getting lucky on throne spawns for a unexpected victory.

Protip: Join the totally cool dominions skype group for all proper diplomatic scheming (aka ganging and backstabbing) action. Otherwise prepare to be schemed(aka ganged and backstabbed)
PS: It is also the perfect place to whine about balance PPS: ...and about the other players PPPS: ... or just talk about completely random shit PPPPS: ... to drown the conversation of other players whining. PPPPPS: You have to ask someone cool via TL-PM to get invited. PPPPPPS: Figure out yourself who is cool enough to hold those magic invitational powers.

I don't think there's a need to keep the game on hold intentionally as the hotfix is almost guaranteed to come before we could start the game anyway. Also the bug probably doesn't affect early game for any nation.
Edit - Actually, apparently also all non-mounted berserkers are broken now. That breaks more nations, even early.

Its 137+63, 8 of the water provs are inland lakes.
I want to do some editing before going further so I'll work on that tomorrow. Going to change it so the ocean has north/south mobility while land had east/west mobility at the point of the bottom middle in the 2nd picture as well as clean up strange connections.

That map looks very good. Just make sure to set all the small lake UW provinces no-start. Otherwise some unlucky waternation will start there.

All land provinces that are 3 normal province connections or less should have no starts on them so everyone can have a nice cap ring. The map is pretty divided up with lots of choke points for land players, I quite like how it has ended up! Only issue is that its a 1000x1000 pixel map, but we don't play for the overworld graphics right?

I didn't realize there was even a Dominions 5 coming out! How is it? I'd be tempted to buy it and play with you guys if its good.
Were there any quality of life upgrades? Some of D4's UI was... dated to say the least.

There are definitely some QOL upgrades, but now my brain is fuzzy and I don't know where most of them begin or end.
Random non-comprehensive list of changes in no particular order:
When you "go AI" you can now set the AI's difficulty, and the AI is a bit smarter strategically.
On the green screen for organizing squads for the battle I found that I can just right click the other squads/commanders to select and then move them without ever having to leave the screen.
Battles are now executed simultaneously rather than turn by turn. Because of all the engine changes involved in that archers now miss moving targets a lot and dudes set to attack specific targets are a lot better at reaching them (including attack rear).
Blesses have been completely revamped.
They added a cataclysm mode where horrors will attack and destroy random thrones. Each throne destroyed reduces the points needed to win until someone wins.
Basically, a bunch of incremental improvements, but it feels pretty fresh.

Goods for goods trades are binding. If you start doing good for diplo stuff then it's not really binding.
We are based mainly around a skype group, so most games are basically anything goes diplo, and a lot of people coordinate/plot/scheme/backstab through skype communication.
Not really any hard rules but generally don't go overboard or start backing up everything you say with screenshots or anything. Also if you die don't share graphs.

I'm NOT letting people claim nations yet, I'm first seeing how many people are interested in joining but I expect we'll have to look for outside players to fill the number of people we need. Please post here or let me know directly if you're interested in playing.
As for rules, I would like to keep a stricter 24(early game) -> 48(mid to late game) and maybe -> 72(super late game) hour limit on turns so the game doesn't drag out, asking for extensions is fine but I'm not sure if I want to do stealth extensions for people risking missing turns who don't say anything and seem to be losing interest in the game. I'm not a fan of games dragging out from multiple stealth extensions as I feel it causes people to lose interest and leads to a cascading effect. Otherwise standard rules of binding trades and open diplo.

Troll voting aside, it seems disciples and MA are clear favorites. However we're lacking in players who can commit to this game but we may have just the right amount for something else. I'm playing with the idea of doing some sort of communities clash game where we challenge another community. Some variation of two/three teams of 2 from TL, vs the same amount from Community X, and Community Y. Or if we can get a 6th to commit we could do teams of 2 with 6 total TLers vs another community. Next variation is a 6 vs 6 against a different community(may not work well on the initial map choice). And a third could be teams of 4, with two other communities but that may be too unbalanced/snow-bally.
Personally I'd like to do three teams of 2, with 6 TLers vs a other community, If we can't get a 6th person to commit(which at the time of this posting we're at 5) but we can do two teams of 2, with 4 TLers vs 2 teams of 2 from X community, and again from Y community. If we have to go with the second option I'll step back from playing so we can progress.
Let me know what you guys would prefer to do from here, and if you have other, completely different ideas feel free to bring them up!
P.S. In the interest of trying to keep things speedy so interest stays up I plan to get some sort of game ready to accept pretenders starting next Friday/Saturday(8 days away) so I'd like to have a game set up picked out by this Sunday and Teams in the next couple days after that.

4 teams of 2 is so few for a FFA.
I would prefer 4v4 or 5v5, is kinda quick, and maybe more people is interested for another game.

I feel like the map would support 5/6 teams of 2 but keeping it to 2 large teams for a possibly faster game is a good point.

Sorry for the delay, I'm having issues with my main PC.
Ok I've set up a room on a discord server as I figure skype/TL PMs wont be a good way to organize a game with other people not from here(the TL site). Since we're at 5 people I'll step back from playing and let you 4 team up into a pair of teams with whoever you please. We're still not picking nations yet till we have full teams and can do some sort of nation draft to keep it fair. If a 6th TLer wants to play they can team up with me.
We're proceeding with 6 teams of 2,(pretender+1 disciple) with 12 total players on the above map.
I don't know if discord will work for you xuanzue, if it doesn't let me know so we can figure out how you interact with other teams and your teammate.

As an update, we have our 4 challenger teams so we just need our TL players to pick their teammates. I'm planning on a snake draft so the sooner we can get teams organized, the sooner nations can be picked and people practice for the start of the game.

Bumping for attention. We're looking to start getting relatively active again, and we're looking to organize a Dom5 game right now.
