I've never owned a DS, what's so special/good about it?

If there's one piece of the Nintendo portable success formula that the Switch is missing, it's backwards-compatibility. Every prior handheld has been compatible 1 generation back (GB/GBC > GBA, GBA > DS, DS > 3DS).

That said, Nintendo still has the chance to get this right on the Virtual Console launch. Wii > Wii U VC transition was kind of fucked up, and there isn't really any reason to not make VC releases port over across systems you own. The value of the games is too small for it to be a smart move for Nintendo to nickel-and-dime people by making them rebuy games they already own.

TBH if Nintendo has an actual Achilles heel, it's that their online/account functionality is not up to par with the current generation. A lot of the Switch's full functionality in this regard hasn't been seen yet, so we'll see what Nintendo has done to make advances in this regard.

I don't see how the Switch could have any kind of elegant backwards compatibility with the 3DS, there's only one screen and no stylus. It'd be a pain in the ass for games that heavily rely on precise stylus usage like LoZ: Phantom Hourglass.

Btw, I think I've settled upon waiting until Christmas to get some kind of bundle. Probably then all the manufacturing problems like dead pixels will be worked out. Maybe there'll be a patch for BotW to improve its performance too.

Good exclusive games, some of which are normal (could have been great on any system) and some make good use of the DS' features. For example:

The World Ends With You - This game's kinda weird. You control two characters at the same time on the two different screens. One using the DPad, one using the stylus. Sounds weird and gimmicky and it is, but it works really well

Etrian Odyssey - A pretty normal dungeon crawling RPG, the gimmick being that you have to draw your own dungeon on the touch screen. This game embraces the old-school style of "bring out the graph paper, we're gonna graph out some dungeons" and turns it into an in-game mechanic

Professor Layton - A brain-teaser puzzle mystery game, many of the puzzles involve drawing stuff on the screen

I hate the 3D feature of the 3DS so I just ignore it and pretend it's just a beefier DS and that approach has worked well.

I really enjoyed the two-screen aspect of the system. It really de-clutters things, having the game on one screen and having menu-ing on the other. It helps a lot for RPGs where you can have animations on the top screen and stats on the bottom

I 3(r)D that statement. See what I did there? I never really use the 3D on mine either.

The two screen system really works well for RPGs and generally for anything that has a menu. Adventure games and puzzle games work well too because you can have menus up all the time on one screen while the game is going on on the second screen. It's nice being able to read the map or clues or manipulate inventory on one screen without cluttering the other screen.

The World Ends With You is just one of those weird games that many people like but somehow has no sequel, or even a spiritual successor that shares gameplay elements, or even copycats. And Square Enix isn't exactly an indie studio that can't afford to make a sequel either.

Anyone with BotW on Switch here? Are the FPS problems really as bad as reviewers are making it out to be when docked?

There is a very good video comparing the dock and non dock version side by side on YouTube.

I am 15 hours in and the game only really has 5% big lag moments but those moments are usually in combat which is quite an annoyance. (And I am not counting the fps drop in big explosion because it won't affect your combat)

The best experience will be in handheld mode. The Wii u version is even worse so if you like Zelda, switch is the version to get.

The dock version basically has a small chance for small stutter in any combat. It also almost always lag in forest area. It does not lag in towns which is a huge plus over the Wii u
The non dock version works better in every situation but also lag in forest combat area.

This is the part that made the DS and the 3DS successful: that their gimmicks were purely optional. You have games that use the dual-screen/touch-screen/3D gimmicks extensively, and games that use them not at all, and both could be successful. It purely opened up options for developers without putting any constraints on them, which allowed a ton of truly great games to be made.

Btw, could we maybe have that "(formerly NX)" removed from the title of the thread? I don't think "NX" will be very useful from now on.

Should be noted that the Wii U has slower startup time, but once the game is launched all load times are quicker.
Why that is, who knows. There are quite a few loading screens in-game though so this is definitely a boon for the Wii U. Depends how often you fast travel and do shrines I suppose.

I play the Wii U version in handheld mode and I have very little FPS issues. Have not played on TV yet.

I do recognize FPS issues when I see them. I complained loudly about Pokemon Sun on my 2DS. Every single Totem/Multi battle the framerate would go down, it detracted from the experience.
I can honestly say that the frame drops in zelda are less frequent and less bad, does not impact my experience.

Still zero issues, the most annoying thing I can think of is the English voice acting in Zelda. Really doesn't feel like a week has passed...

As some above me have already said; The FPS drops are something that do happen.
It really depends on what reviewer you're talking about, but if it are one of the doom-predikers. It is not that bad.

For me, the FPS drops are annoying, but they haven't impacted my gameplay much, if any. The FPS drops feel like a stutter and then dissapear. These drops consist (for me) of max 2-3 seconds and it never got "stuck".

What I mean to say with Stuck, is that when a PC has Framedrops, usually they tend to get worse or less worse or even freeze up your whole PC. The framedrops in this case are a bit "random".

The framedrops we experience in Zelda (as I only have Zelda, I can't claim if this is inherent on the Switch or on the game; i.e. is it the graphic drivers' or the game developers' fault) is for me always fixed. Thus, whenever a framedrop happens it will recover from that drop and you'll be able to continue. This makes the occassional framedrops less noticable or frustrating (atleast for me).

That's really encouraging. I don't have a Switch yet (plan to buy it at some point) and I was wondering if I should play Zelda on my Wii U. I think my best course is still to play other games (there is no shortage of that :D) until I get my Switch.

Curious for all of you BotW players. Have you already, or will purchase the $19.99 USD expansion pass?

There's an expansion?
The base game's already dope.
Who needs dlc?
A build is not a guess, an estimation or a hunch, a feeling, or a foolish intuition. A build is a dependable, unwavering, unarguably accurate, portrayer of your ambition.

Nintendo is the one company that should actually do more DLC. I don't even care what price...

Let's face it the next Zelda game we get will be like 2025.

I will be somewhat disappointed if we don't see a 2D Zelda game this generation. Nothing against 3D Zelda, but Nintendo has done a good job of recognizing that their fanbase wants both and releasing both 2D and 3D Zelda games each generation.
