Still not quite sure what to think of Octopath even with all the reviews and comments out. It seems to scratch that itch for classical old-school JRPGs, which I actually don't really have. And it does so with disconnected stories and characters that seem to be a bit flat.
The only thing that appeals to me in this game is the combat system and the visuals I guess, which everybody praises, but it didn't make the game a day-1 buy.

I also read a lot of comments of people who love Octopath but hated XC2 (found it boring, too much fan-service, etc). XC2 is one of my favorite games in recent years (probably the only single player game I spent 100+ hours in 10 years).

Currently playing Ys VIII and having a fucking blast. If you enjoyed Xenoblade, a must have too. Reviews said the port was poor but on current patch, I'm seeing nothing problematic, just a cool game!

Now this, this is a recommendation I would tend to follow .

So I just found out that the "Path actions, unique to each character" are actually just the same 4 repeated across the characters. Pretty disappointed as the team I was planning to use now feels subpar as I would have both of the "reveal extra NPC info" characters.

Am I making a bigger deal out of this than it really is? Or is it pretty worthwhile to have all 4 Path Actions available?

PS: This is regarding Octopath Traveler, if that wasn't clear

They aren't quite repeated since you will be forced to switch on occasion for some of them anyway. For example, there are some items you can't "Buy" (no sale value) and some items you cannot realistically "Steal" (due to low / no chance of success). The game will force you to switch out your party to 100% clear a town of everything it offers in such cases. So the issue of having a repeat on your favorite four characters isn't a big deal in the sense that there isn't a single party of four one can have to handle every situation anyway.

Additionally, since characters you are not using don't gain levels, it prevents you from just using a single party of four as you will want everyone at a decent level for the start of their chapter 2 and chapter 3 story.
The melody of logic always plays the notes of truth.

It's really interesting to see developers add free unprompted content to a game nobody expects anything from anymore (mostly in this case because it's already quite complete).
It's refreshing when you're familiar with other business models and consumer friendliness levels in the industry :D. By some miracle Nintendo remains untainted by current monetization practices. My most played games on Switch are Splatoon and Xenoblade, and I'm surprised at how easy it would be to inject microtransactions in there. But nope, you buy the game once, maybe an expansion pack, maybe a season pass. That's how things were done like 20 years ago.

Octopath is an amazing game

the combat is glorious, it may very well be the best turn based combat systems, the music is fantastic, the art design is also great, just finished all chapter 1s and the story of each character seems insteresting + the voice acting is great.

downside would be the path actions which are cool but just to find a few items, solve a quest or solve a puzzle, would have loved more interectation

but that's about it

I love RPGs, i'm a sucker for them since the SNES era and this is one of most complete package rpgs out there, there are flaws but imo those are really minors

It's why when people ask me if getting DLC for a Nintendo game is worth it I just look at em funny. I don't know the last time I bought DLC from them and felt I didn't get my money's worth.

I don't think any other company has anything quite like the Amiibo. The longer they hold people's interest in say Splatoon 2, the more Amiibos they are likely to buy

In the case of that Mario Kart update, did Nintendo announce a new Link/Mario Kart Amiibo? Those would fly off the shelves

Nope. There has never been anything specifically made for Mario Kart. Just amiibo that happen to get functionality added in MK8.

Zelda stuff has a problem staying on the shelves regardless. Mario too outside of Waluigi and Daisy, since they are rarely used by games. Nintendo does an excellent job of not flaring out like other TTL lines by not making games reliant on it(outside of Animal Crossing: Welcome Amiibo, which also sucked, and is why AC amiibo have sat on shelves for a long time) and underproducing for demand.

Of course, this results in frustrating would be customers regularly checking up on CPSIA sheets to see if there's a new printing destined for US shelves or importing when Japan gets their more frequent restocks or from other countries that have different buying trends. I know I've imported from Japan and Australia to avoid horrendous scalping prices.

Maybe I should throw up some pictures of my collection...

gotta say, Octopath traveler does get harder, i mean, in the sense that i makes you think about the BP/weakness stuff, it makes you think if you should double hit this turn, triple or do a combination for the next turn to unleash tremendous damage

Can't remember the last japanese turn based rpg that actually makes you think strategically, most of them is ABUSE THE SHIT OUT OF 1 SINGLE STUFF

it also makes you change party somewhat throught meaning you can't abuse the same combo all the time

It makes random trash mobs more interesting. I'm constantly keeping an eye on the turn order, trying to break them at the right time

I just have 4 characters right now. Can't wait til I get more so I can figure out how the multi-classing system works.

Such a long prologue. I know they wanted 8 paths because of game mechanics, but the early game is really dragging out. It would help if I cared about more than 1 character. I got Primrose, Olberic, Tressa and Cyrus. I also played H'aanit in the demo. Of those 5, I only really care about Primrose

Tressa arc is really whatever

But the other's are pretty goos IMO, nothing mind blowing but well thought and i actually like it's THEIR story (so far) like, like it's their reason to do what they are doing, it makes it all more believable.

I always complains about RPGs that never really answer some basic questions in team composition like...

Who are these people joining me?
Why do they want to go with me?
What do they gain?

I feel Octopath it's more true in sense of + Show Spoiler +
Tressa wants to be a merchant, primrose wants revenge, therion wants to get rid of the fool's band, etc...
not overly complex (so far mid you, haven't finished the game) storylines

I found Olberic to be OK. Good enough that I want to know what happens next, but not so much that I'm super pumped for it. His interaction with the kid was pretty cute.

Cyrus I like as a character, I just didn't like + Show Spoiler +
how he jumped to the conclusion that the gambling guy was the culprit. Flimsy logic, but I understand it's not a mystery game so they couldn't build it up the same way they build up Phoenix Wright, but I felt it was really weak to just accuse the guy

I played through Ophilia's quest. I liked it a lot. Really liked the two sisters interaction. + Show Spoiler +
and how the father pretty much no-sold the fact that Ophilia wasn't supposed to get the flame. I thought the whole breaking tradition part would have been a much bigger deal and the town would have rejected her but I guess the point is that they're family and her father sees her as one of his own

Can you give me an example of an RPG that did this worse than Octopath?

Kus so far I feel like each character could have easily banded up with any random willing traveler, and besides a couple of incredibly tacked on "travel banter's" I have no indications that the characters actually know each other's names.
I can take that responsibility.

who cares, because they don't even show up in the story, they are just there for the battle system

it is, essentially, their story, unlike other games where they even talk and i'm like, "what the fuck? how did this guy even know what the hell is happening"

it is not the cleanest solution but i'll take it over the other one

I am just kinda confused with your opinion kus you are saying you don't like most RPGs for something Octopath does particularly poorly imo, yet you like how Octo does it.

Like I think of FF7, where you kinda randomly meet some characters but the way the get involved feels very natural. Cloud gets involved in their story simply because their goals align for a time, and the other characters get a glimpse of what Cloud is fighting against and choose to join his grander cause once their own issues are dealt with. I am gravely over-simplifying this (especially the fact that Cloud himself got involved thanks to Barret), but the point is that this style of characters meeting is fairly standard in most RPGS. So I am unsure of your criticism without some examples.

But to each their own I suppose.

I think that video nails the issues I have with Octo, and is why I am not recommending the game to my friends.
I can take that responsibility.

No, i hate it because most of rpgs have people join the story and the main character because who knows why, octopath just puts the party together but they don't interfere in the story of each, you don't see Olbric or Primrose getting in when Tressa is talking to that random merchant in querrysomethinf or Therion when searching for the stones

For all intent and purposes it's a solo adventure.

That's what i meam.
