This is the first mobile game I've gotten into and I don't think I've enjoyed any Pokémon game as much thus far. I did not see this coming.
Most of all I'm enjoying the long nocturnal walks with the missus, can't imagine being arsed if I lived alone...

Yeah I think the game shines when you have a significant other, roommate, or someone else close that you can play with as it really opens up what you can do & makes the walks a lot more fun. It also makes the gym system a lot better because you can train up gyms a lot more effectively and it's a lot more productive if you can leave behind 2 decently strong guys in a high level gym over one. One of the best defenses for a gym really is just being level 6, 7, or 8 because then you really make it a big pain in the ass to knock down even if the pokemon inside are only average.

Though I was in a lucky position where I walk almost everywhere anyways (or take public transportation everywhere else) and regularly go for runs. So I pretty much get all sorts of pokemon for doing the things I'd be doing anyways.

On the lack of Pokevision... I don't know that I mind too much so long as they fix up the tracker to clear off old pokemon. Ideally they'd add a three step timer (like green -> orange -> red) thing to the tracker if they won't show location so you can at least judge if it's worth running around for a pokemon.

Once you understand both the game and your local area it's not all that difficult to track down some of the pokemon. Yeah you can't run and grab every Snorlax that spawns, but that's how it's supposed to be anyways. Like the other day a Pinsir showed up on my tracker and I knew from how Pinsir's spawn in my area (they seem to only spawn in small parks in the area) that there was only really one possible place he could be. Later on a Pikachu showed up in the same way and I had a pretty good idea based on how I was walking + the area where the PIkachu would be (we didn't go for it, but we circled the area based on our way home and it was clear that the Pikachu was where I thought it would be).

But then again part of that may be because I had the use of Pokevision + still have a community sightings map that helped me take a good look at some of the local spawning patterns.

Lucky eggs are barely P2W if at all. By the time you get to like level 20 (for now at least, probably later you'll need to be more like level 25 or so) you can compete with anything so long as you have the right pokemon powered up. And you get enough lucky eggs from leveling to hit level 20 easily if you use them wisely and will still have plenty left over. Type advantage + Attacker's advantage makes up for several hundred CP at the very least and makes it pretty manageable to take out any gym if you are dedicated enough & it's not being actively trained up/defended. Yeah you may not hold gyms if you're lower level, but holding gyms is really difficult in general.

As far as I've seen if you have any decent spawn rate of pokemon at all you should be able to train up at least something that's decent as a 'point man' pokemon.

The only pokemon that's a problem in terms of CP difference are dragonites because of how dragon type works + the massive CP of the dragonite, and the problem there is almost more the division between people who were able to take advantage of dragontini nests and those who weren't, and has little to do with lucky eggs. Though even then Ice based attacks should shred Dragonites and there's some good options there.

Barring a working tracker there are other gameplay related issues Niantic needs to address to keep the game worth playing imo. Most of it can be summarized as people wanting a Pokémon game with everything the original games had plus AR. Or majority of us having too high expectations and being let down and thus having our childhood dreams crushed. Maybe the game was just released too early. Niantic themselves even said, that they released the game with about 10% of the features they initially planned to have at launch. This of course is no excuse for the non-existant communication policy they've shown so far.

Other issues which need to be adressed are:
- Lack of ways to gain exp for the trainerlevel so you don't spam evolve pidgey, weedle etc. with a lucky egg, while throwing everything into the meatgrinder for resources. Feels more like a pokémon team rocket version atm
- There's barely any reason to keep your starter / favorite mon except for the power of friendship. Leveling it up is completely redundant because of the amount of resources needed to make it worth it. With a rising trainerlevel you'll find a stronger one anyway
- The battlesystem can be described as rapidly tapping the screen, while lacking any depth. The types used to matter in the original games and your attacks had to be used with some thought. Training your team via battling, like it originally was, is not an option either, which would however make the grind for many people actually fun and not some mindless paper-toss simulator
- Lack of trading and battling your nearby friends - first one is confirmed to be implemented afaik
- Increasing difficulty for whatever reason. Wasting 5+ pokeballs to catch that <100 cp pidgey, which you need to hoard in order to increase your trainerlevel gets frustrating over time and actually punishes you for leveling up your trainerlevel
- Hatching eggs: This one really grinds my gears as someone who goes to work by bike every day. You have to leave the app open in order to eventually(!) track the distance. I have 3.5km each way and getting home in the evening I sometimes don't even have a bloody 2km egg hatched, while having the app open all the time despite going slow and even slower when nearing traffic lights. Approximately I'm not even reaching 10km/h

There probably are even more I can't think of right now. So, even ignoring the tracker there are problems, which need to be adressed to keep me and probably even many other people playing. Here's me hoping that Niantic will get their shit together and improve the game over the next few months. I still have fun playing, but with the rate this is going I can see myself not playing by the end of this month.

XP for training at a gym is actually pretty decent if you have the right pokemon for it. If they bumped it up a bit it could be a really viable way to level. Though the problem is the animations to transition between fights take awhile.

Still at the right gym/setup you can get like 50-60 XP every 30 or so seconds by rapidly beating the gym's weakest pokemon with a lower CP mon.

Yeah it seems like it should be pretty fast?

If you get a low CP Oddish or something you can probably take out a magikarp in 20-30 seconds for 60+ XP per cycle. Combine that with a lucky egg and you can probably grind out some pretty serious XP so long as you don't mind sitting there doing nothing but training.

You'd have to time it, but I think you can get like 3-5 XP/sec, which doesn't sound like a lot, but would be something like 22->23 in 5-10 hours.

EDIT:
Actually, the more magikarps you can add the better it potentially becomes and if no one else is around it'd be dramatically faster because you'd get the bonuses for beating the gym. There's probably some equilibrium between minimizing the screen transitions (more magikarp in the gym) and maximizing the training victory bonuses.

Wouldn't it be better to use high CP Magikarp? Or does the game not care about CP differences?

I only get 10 coins for the first time i put a pokemon into a gym .. is there a way to get more coins (and not having to defend a gym for 21 hours?)

It's 10 coins and 500 dust for each Pokemon you currently have defending a gym. So say you're currently defending 4 different gyms, when you cash out you get 40 coins and 2000 dust.

So if you got a cluster of gyms nearby, take all of those over as fast as possible then take the rewards instantly.

It's neither necessary or realistic to defend gyms for 21 hours.

Nothing more into it.

It also maxes rewards at 10 gyms. Any more than 10 gyms and you still only get rewards equal to exactly 10 iirc.

Magikarps don't really deal significant damage regardless of CP difference because of struggle which is why you use them.

Idk about the potion part otherwise though; I toss out something like 50%-75% of the potions I get because I just get way more than I need. But I do play in an area with a high density of pokestops so restocking on items is easy for me. But it would limit the amount of time you could do this at once.

If you are in a high density pokestop zone, farming those is way more efficient than training gyms but I get your point. Still, training gyms is just the worst way to get xp, which is sad because the incentive for training needs to be greater.

On another subject, how often do you guys see triple evolution in the wild? I'm level 20 and I've seen less than 10 triple evo and all of them were Pidgeot, Beedril or Butterfree. I've also only seen 6 final double evolution (like Seakings).

Triple Evo's I've gotten in 22 levels:

Butterfree
Beedrill
Vileplume (poor IV's unfortunately, but good CP)

I believe I've seen a Pidgeot as well, but only on radar.

My significant other has also gotten a Gengar in the wild.

Double evo's I've gotten a lot of including Gloom, Wartortle, Polywhirl, Haunter (the 2nd ghost whatever it's called), Hypno, Seaking, Golduck, PIdgeottos, Kakuna, Metapod, Golbat, Clefable, Primeape, and Nidorina.

I'm honestly a bit pissed about this whole tracking and pokevision getting shut down situation. I mean, if they actually fixed their tracking system instead of removing it completely I would have been okay with it. But having 0 real ways of actually tracking down pokemon is pretty shit. Let pokevision run until they can get their shit together and fix the tracking and then shut it down is fine. But this is just frustrating to me.

Agreed. If you live in an area with a dense population it's probably ok but I just looked and there's a single pokemon on my tracker right now (horsea) and i have no idea how far away it is and only 2 stops within walking distance which aren't close to each other. Without pokevision or working ingame tracking I'm putting the game down. Driving to the city to sit with a bunch of people in between a triple lure isn't what I had in mind for this game.

Yea, my area is somewhat similar, I have 2 stops that are at least somewhat walking distance of each other. But 15 minute drive gets me to a fairly populated area at least but still not being able to track stuff in my own neighborhood just sucks.
