I think they will try to add more story and flesh out each segment of the plot a lot more.

So we'll have the original story with some modified bits, plus some more content. Probably side quests or backstory/character development.

There are a lot of plot points to FF7 which many players did not grasp due to the poor translation back then. For example, to this day, a fair amount of FF7 players/fans don't know that + Show Spoiler +
you only ever see the real Sephiroth once in the entire game, at the very end (not counting flashbacks). Any other time, the "Sephiroth" you encounter is Jenova shapeshifting to take his form. Sephiroth is using her and controlling her to do his bidding "as himself". So, technically, Sephiroth didn't kill Aerith; Jenova did. So there is a lot of potential in expanding on that particular segment.

I'm reserving judgement. I actually have a lot of faith in Square Enix lately, so I think they can do this right.

Yeah, I'm not sure its confusing, that's the whole Cloud mind control + men in black were, basically if it has JENOVA cells, which a lot of people do because of SOLDIER, Sephiroth can control/manipulate it.

Yeah, we need more details. The game is so goddam huge, I don't blame them for wanting to make it episodic; I could easily seeing it take years for them to complete FF7.

And there are lots of parts of that game that are garbage and could be dropped. Snowboarding for instance. Or just confusing to the point of being silly. And the dialog would need to be completely redone, since the translation wasn’t good and Barret sounded like he walked out of 70s blackploitation film as viewed through the eyes of a Japanese viewer

Interested to see how it works out. Glad they are not just dumping out the same game with pretty graphics.

Okay let's all just calm down... via Reddit/Interview:

They made multi-release since they would have to cut stuff out if they made it in one game. The detail of the game will be so dense, and you will be able to go to various locations within Midgar that you couldn't go before. -there will be some stuff that has to be cut, but there will be lots of stuff added. overall volume will be big -They are working with various companies outside, including CC2 -The battle system is real-time, action feel. The degree of action will be "Dissidia > Kingdom Hearts> FF7 remake" It will be more tactical. -Although it's action style, it has ATB as well. -You can control other party members, but you can keep control one if you want -3 party members at a time like the original

About the details of splitting the game into episodes, please tell us more.

Kitase: From the beginning, we have considered it impossible to remake FF7 into one single game.Althought it's impossible to tell you the details about the splitting at the moment, please wait for our further announcement.

Nomura: If we tried to stuff the whole game into one release, some part of the game would have to appear as digests. We'd have to remove some contents from the game, and it would be difficult to add more to the game. Considering that a full remake of the original game must be achived, we have decided to split the game into episodes.

Kitase: Taking the No.8 street shown in the video this time, even just this is already highly dense. If we are to remake the content of the original version at that quality, it would have been impossible to do with a single release.
Splitting the original version into episode with nothing dropped, as well as adding complements, and remaking the game the game in its full volume is what we are thinking.

How will the battle system look like?

Kitase: Unlike the encounter battles in the original version, we were aiming for a seamless active battle like shown in the video.

Nomura: Regarding the speed of the combat, as well as the sensation of tempo, we have considered something alongside Dissidia FF that you can play without stress. The degree of action would feel like Dissidia FF > KH > FF7 Remake.
We are trying to make a new action combat system that definitely demand no action technique, and let you consider your strategy during the combat.

What would the elements in the battle system from the original version become?

Nomura: Since the game is based on FF7, elements like ATB gauge and limitbreak will appear but with new useage. Please wait for our further announcements on how they would evolve.

Are you going to adjust the story in order to maintain connection to other compilations of the game, as well as adapting to the modern age?

Nomura: We are planning some mechanism to dig deeper into each episodes. Players who have played the original version surely would know everything from the beginning to the end of the game, including some very important moments. And we are planning to give even such users surprises.

Kitase: We are not going to remake a game so you only play for nostalgia. We want to make the hearts of the original fans pump. We are adjusting the storyline with this idea in mind.

Ye so it sounds good but iam still super skeptical(as i should) since words can always sound beautiful.
If they nail the combat its a 100% buy from me even if the story is terrible. Love that they add new things into the story btw.

Its pretty clear they are using whatever engine FF15 is being made on, which is cool. And the FF7 story was already pretty terrible. Super fun in the highest anime way, but terrible. But if they double down on the "anime", it could be great.

One good thing about episodic, is that they can learn from their mistakes and take feedback.

Its kinda annoying in single player, they dont really balance it post-release, you're stuck with what you got, so I'm hoping if there's stupid or boring or mindless combat in the first episode, they can improve on it in the 2nd.

how can the story be terrible lol, it's FF7.

I don't like the action battle thing but I am open to be surprised. I just hope they keep the materia system in some way or form that resembles the original. I loved the materia and don't want it gone!

Regarding the discussion about FF7's plot. The game and the plot really hit home when I played it. As a child plot holes and poor translation didn't matter that much; revisiting the game I still like how the plot is delivered.

I don't have high expectations of the remake and I don't expect anything that, to me, gives anything near the experience I had with FF7. I'll get it and play it when it comes to either PC or Xbox though.

Edit:

Note, I'm not very knowledgeable about the plot really. It's puzzled together with the pieces I still remember from the game. With that said I think they pretty much have to keep the dirty, dirty materia in the game

I mean, yes, they will keep it in the game story wise for sure but I mean the whole magic system. I would hate if they made materia sth that you find and it gives a character a special ability or sth. It was cool to combine them and such. I hope that stays in some way or form.

#are you fuckin nuts? suddenly jumping on a snowboard for a 2 minute nailbiting clusterfuck down a mountain out of nowhere was crazy. and you know the snowboarding game at the golden saucer has like 5 hours of gameplay behind it coz it has a bunch of bonus and secret levels

my only reservation is that by splitting it into series they will flesh out the random battles like they did with FF13 (which made FF13 literally unplayable for me, i quit it after 10 hours or whatever, waste of time)

I don't think they should bring back the 5 hours of shitty snowboarding. Really, no more shitty JRPG mini-games. That is not the quality content I am looking for.

snowboarding was replayable because of gameplay design, not because they had to put a lot of effort into it.
compare it to the motorbike game, no1 really wants to play the motorbike game more than once. but the snowboarding game was highly replayable, and scaled, so it was great. i didn't play it too much myself but my little brother loved it

and if you think suddenly being chucked down a mountain or thrown into the helm of a submarine wasn't cool then you're missing the wonder of those events! (i wonder if they will put QTE in ff7, wasnt that the last big thing, or did it come out of ff13-3? well i'm pretty sure they will stick to PSX roots)

Eh, the Steam version will 90% likely be a port of the mobile FFVI, which means it has an 'interesting' art direction like FFV on steam. Apparently Phantom Brave release on Steam was also leaked.

Episodes ...

Good: Lets them actually remake FF7 and not FF7: TL;DR HD GRAPHICS.

Bad: Am i waiting till 2020 (legitimate timeframe if you think about it which is scary as all fuck) to play it all?

Given the footage we saw with the gameplay preview and the English voices overs being done or at least already in production I just hope the releases are months apart and not any longer.

The publication spoke with series producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Tetsuya Nomura in an interview featured in its latest issue, in which the pair discussed the choice to release the game in multiple parts. Square Enix first revealed the news in a press release yesterday.

"It's going to be multi-part because when we considered fully remaking Final Fantasy 7 in PS4 quality, and as we look over much of it, we estimated the volume to be beyond what could be fit in one entry," Nomura explained.

Cutting up the game into installments means the team won't have to sacrifice as much content as would be necessary with just one game. While some elements will be lost, the team will compensate by allowing greater exploration of certain areas, like the sprawling city of Midgar.

A representative for Square Enix later confirmed to Polygon that "each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the colume of content equal to a full-sized game."

Outside of the Famitsu exclusive, Kitase has announced another big piece of news: Final Fantasy 7 Remake is being developed in Unreal Engine 4. Epic Games confirmed the collaboration with Square Enix in a press release today.
