NorCal is hosting a 150 man tournament this weekend featuring S2J, Westballz, Shroomed, PewPewU, SFAT, Lucky, Hax, Kirbykaze, and many others! There will even be a exhibition Falcon round robin, starring Falcon legends Hax, S2J, SilentSpectre, Lord, and possibly one more.
Really interested to see who wins this. Usually you have one of the big five guaranteed to win a tournament as big as this but in this case none of them showed up. There are a lot of players who could win it I think. KK and Hax are probably the favorites though.
kk looked super rusty last time I saw him play (michigan tourney iirc). think hax will tap tho, or shroomed wins cause shroomed winning norcal seems standard
Shroomed generally underperforms in Norcal since everyone is a lot more adjusted to his Dr. Mario. He rarely wins tournaments in Norcal anymore. I wouldn't count him out though he's been using mostly Sheik and Marth lately anyway.
I just remember when he won every tourney including "Shroomed Sucks" dedicated to him. That was yrs ago tho, ppw/sfat and stuff have made a lot of progress.

It will be really interesting to see who takes it home indeed.
I'd say that KK will make it to top 3 or even Grand Finals.
Hax is less certain, as a result of his character choice.
And I'll be rooting for PPU of course.
I doubt we'll ever see liquibets for smash simply because there's not enough time to set up the bets and actually have people vote on them. It's just not a good match for the system tl has in place for starcraft. The closest you're gonna get to liquibets is vgbc's saltybets type thing.
Hax is supposed to be dual maining Falcon/Fox now, so that should be more interesting at least.
Definitely gonna be pulling for my man PewPewU. I need more Marth in my life.
Does anyone have any idea who to ask to get this stream featured on TL? Presumably they are interested in featuring Melee since they picked up a team, and this is the first big tournament since their announcement.

But It appears they evaluate the new recommendations monthly so you could even open up a new thread in the website feedback forum if you want faster attention (maybe)

I'd love for PPU to do well but unfortunately he hasn't been going to tournaments lately so its hard to get a feel for his current skill level. He also might be out of practice...
it's smash's attempt at a analytical commentator + a hype commentator (though HMW would whoop most ppl at this tourney), can only get more hilarious if kk steps in for tafo
in the 2nd stream there was one game they were playing in player slots 2 and 3, and that centered the percentages which lined up better with the overlay .. they should do this for every game :O

also casters need desks or smth lol
I think you have to pick the controller ports according to the stage in order to get fair starting positions.

ohh really? Huh I didn't think that could be a factor lol
no, link is pretty trash. But germ is has been the best link player for like 10 yrs and has beaten almost everyone in cali with it, though he's been playing on and off for a long time now
germ looked pretty rusty though, a lot of random shields that looked like he was trying to do something else, lots of air dodges. he's always liked the marth/link match up tho and it's not as 1 sided as link falcon

yeah I know what you mean, I remember the set you were talking about I think (koc2 or something). It makes for an interesting contrast with the new generation of marths though when you have the really flashy marths like tai and then the slower more basic marths like the moon
No idea how competitive Smash works. But just watching the documentary and now the tourney stream... Really makes me want to just play the game again myself. No matter how hard I suck at it. :D

best thing about smash, you can play it on any skill level and it's fun as hell.

The Cali guys or Hax could definitely beat him, I'm not sure what makes you say that he's that guaranteed to win...?
They won't though. None of them are good enough. He's not going to lose to any of the top Falcon's. Shroomed is great but he's not going to beat the second best Sheik in the world. He's certainly not going to lose to a Marth. Neither SFAT nor Westballz nor even Hax have consistent enough spacey play to beat him. Maaaaaaybe Fly can do it but that's about it.
Sorry, KK isn't going to lose to America's second tier.

Not sure of the reasoning but it's standard and it makes recovery so much more fun. I would guess that projectile spam is really annoying without friendly fire?
1. It'd make some combos ridiculously stupid to play against, imagine getting walled by a peach with falco lasers shooting through her.
2. It makes the game way more strategic. You actually have to space your moves not just throw them into the clusterfuck knowing you can't hurt your ally. More importantly, you can't save allies without friendly fire!

Friendly fire used to be off, and then someone went Samus/Samus.
Friendly fire on is great, though; there are so many things you can do to save your partner, not to mention you can slap your Jiggs partner awake after a Rest.

This is not the actual bracket (as of my post), but it will tell you who will be in there. As soon as they finalize it, it should stop saying " this bracket is a preview", and it'll be the real deal.
Overall I have to question why people watch this? I mean I loved smash back in the day but it's not really that fun to watch IMO. I'd say most other beat em ups are way more interesting to watch ( unless it's one of the 100% juggle ones)

If you don't find Smash mechanics fun to watch, don't watch it. If watching games doesn't interest you, I have no idea why someone trying to explain why it's interesting would change your mind.
I think Fox still has the lowest rate of winning Nationals since the beginning of the competitive scene. Literally zero big wins outside of EVO 2013 (and BEAST 4 if you count that).

I was just asking what people found so fun in it... Not a lot of spectacular combos and the whole gameplay about knocking people out fits poorly for viewing. I mean people always come with comments about why watching SC is so superior to other games like Dota2 or LoL so I figured someone could tell me what makes this game interesting to watch.

If you don't think this game has spectacular combos then you'll just have to accept that this isn't for you. That would be considered a very minority opinion.
Lord showing he still doesn't give a shit about winning the game but he is flashy as fuck.
Edit: And watching his tech skill, he's actually so clean and consistent. Hax dash into clean platform land. Damn. If this guy wanted to play to win he'd fucking win.
Edit2: Really can't wait for new commentators. These guys are alright (and have some legacy in the scene and deserve respect for that) but it really sounds like they haven't kept up with the competitive scene or meta.
zzz, wanted lucky to go farther. need that '08 lucky back. and yeah, they need people in the scene so they actually know simple things like shroomed has played sheik for 3+ yrs

ya boy is in loser's, bro, to a falcon who you didn't even list.
just missed a wavedash by airdodging horizontally that led to his dead
KK is playing really bad. deserved to lose that. to a falcon. wtf.
I will say the new age Falcons are really doing a lot to combat the common Sheik vs Falcon tropes though. They're making the matchup look more even than ever.
hax literally cant win a single non-standard matchup. his only losses to non top 5 are mid-high tiers like IC's and luigis.
Edit: aHAHAHA I just realized we might end up with Fly vs Wes WF's. If you've ever watched their previous encounters it's all Wes getting the lead and choking it away on the last stock. Like, multiple times. Fly is so solid and Wes keeps trying to overrun him and failing to crack him. Wes looks really good right now tho so I'll be interested to see that matchup again.
Edit2: I hope Hax doesn't fall in Loser's to Lord who plays Falcon to entertain and not win. That might crush his soul.
nothing wrong with marth in team, given doubles history. there just aren't enough good pure marth mains out there to rep him in singles OR doubles. there's PPU near the top and Moon below that. every other high level marth is like a combination. m2k, cactuar, TAI, none of them properly main marth.
Edit: Hax & SFAT 3-2 KK PPU in teams. very 20XX. don't expect the team they face in winner's finals to have much of a chance. I'm surprised Shroomed SS got 1st seeding in teams.
Edit2: KK spamming 5 fltilts on shield. lol ok get 9th. awful
Edit: ahhhhhhhhhhh Fiction that last stock suicide was just the conclusion of a series of tech flubs in that set. can't play that loose vs someone with PPU's level of punish game
I still don't know why Hax gave up on Falcon. I know he has his reasons but even his Top 5 curse meant that he almost never lost to anyone under the Top 5. And honestly he was soooooo close to beating DrPP at EVO that I thought he'd really crack the Top 5 eventually. He developed Falcon's neutral game to such a ridiculous level that I thought with just a bit more polish in the punish game he'd get to where he wanted.
he said he liked playing fox better, I guess that's reason enough since fun > results for a lot of people. But yeah, he basically never lost to anyone outside of top 5 and tapped every sheik ever in that match up. At the same time he bitched a ton about falcon on the forums (then again what falcon doesn't), that's probably also part of the reason he switched.
Where are all the big names from the past I remember? Mew2King, Wobbles, Ken, Azen? Did not all of the pros make it out to this tournament? Do they no longer compete or they're just no longer that strong? Ken's commentating, right? But I didn't see his name anywhere in the bracket.
This is basically a big California regional with a few out of state reps. M2k is East Coast, Wobbles is retired, Ken isn't here at all (He was at the last cali regional KoC though. bopped Fly real good), Azen is retired afaik (haven't seen him play in a long time).
The simple answer is that this isn't a national. Not everyone is here.

Yeah, Azen is retired. chillin was tweeting about getting h2yl back together the other day so maybe there's hope.
The year 20xx is a joke about the theoretical year in the future where the only character that is played will be fox and have perfect tech. It's hax's joke but I'm not sure if its parodying something or just an inside joke that spread through out the community.
""""retired"""" esports retirement = taking a break
20XX is from hax saying in the future (year 20XX) where everyone is completely perfect at the game with perfect tech everyone only plays fox and every game is decided by flipping a coin for port priority
Wes going from getting 3 stocked to showing why this matchup is basically retarded.
On a completely tangential point I wish EVO had a set that was nearly as flashy as this. Wes pulls off the craziest, most crowd pleasing shit possible every single game (and has it pulled on him all the time). EVO was really tame in terms of combo video potential compared to like any other tournament in the same time frame.
Edit: Hax losing to Shroomed. I'm going to assume it was a Doc which would continue Hax's streak of getting bopped by having no matchup experience against mid tiers.

He hasn't played doc since like apex, he says that everyone has figured his doc out :/ He's been practicing a lot of marth as well.
oh mai gawd Wes is neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever gonna beat Fly what the hell. how many sets is Fly gonna clutch out.
Also it's hilarious to me that Ken might just barely make it into bracket in this kind of a tournament but he beat Fly last time they met in a set. Just one of those weird style counters. Old school Marth is still pretty good.

Might be two days late but I have to say I was kinda harsh and quick in my judgement on this game. I did watch the rest of the tournament and after a while I could see that it was a lot more exciting than it first seemed to be and i did realize it seemed to involve a lot more skill than I initially thought
