So, the purpose of this thread is to try and find or remember old friggen games that you cant quite put a name to.
My game that eludes me is an old knights and castle game, where you could build your castle walls and towers and defend them. Now, this is fucking old as hell, like it came with a floppy disk I think, and I must have had the demo... because there was a section grayed out. Essentially you tried to make a kingdom, against different factions of Europe or something. (Once you were attacked the game pre played the battle out, until one team fell.) I remember buying Knights or Archers at the end of each turn, and Knights took on like 3 or 4 footmen at a time. The graphics were pretty terrible, but not quite stick figures. Anyways snowballs chance in hell, but It was my first "RTS."
And I just found the other game I was looking for... Descent. Man that game. I played that for so long!
Hmm, maybe Defenders of the Crown or Joan of Arc, they sound kind of similar to what you describe and are from around the same time (floppy disk games!).
Had this old NES game, it was set up sort of like a chess board, and when you attacked with something, it would go into this battlescreen where these creatures would fight and shoot each other and stuff. What the hell was that?

Probably Archon. There were versions for quite a few systems.

Its a game that came with the soundblaster kit (it was a demo actually). It had an aerial view similiar to diablo, and you controlled a red tropper inside a ship/base or something, i think it had a number on the name (1000 or 2000) but no sure.

Yeah that came with the win95 install disc. i played the hell out of it
I played this on PC, I believe around 1994-1997. Quite toony, platform game where you play a sort of roundish ninja like character. In terms of graphics it was most comparable with sonic the hedgehog. I think there were 2 versions of the game, 1 with a boy ninja and 1 with a girl ninja, it could have been that I had a version demo though... In my memory the characters look a bit like LoL's Kennen: + Show Spoiler +
This thread is a really cool idea. I have two games to identify if anyone could help:
The first game I'm 80% sure was from the SNES. You played some guy that could transform into a pool of slime, and the goal of the game was to haunt and scare the crap out of some family living in a house by sneaking around. Every now and then you'd fall through a crack or something? and would have to do some mini-game collecting slime.
The other game I think was snes too, but I can vaguely recall any of the details about it. All I remember is that you played some abstract, cartoonish alien character, and were on the moon or somewhere in space pushing around a shopping cart, and either you threw tomatoes, or other things in space threw tomatoes at you. It was kinda sandboxy.

Mh I don't really think it's the game you're looking for, but maybe Conqueror 1086 A.D.? I loved that game as a kid. You basically have a turn based world map where you build your own kingdom and castles, but it's also half RPG since you can buy items for yourself and fight in your own battles in first person and participate in jousting tournaments and what not . Kind of like Mount and Blade.

Hmm so I have been trying to find a game for a long time.
I don't remember a whole heap of details, but it's very much like final fantasy tactics (so grid based combat) but in a post apocalyptic setting....or something like that. It was on PC. Weapons in the game mostly include real weapons, grenades, guns, rocket launchers, and....possibly also a few close range weapons, especially early on. Some of the enemies were humans (maybe gangs, or army, or something), and some were mutated creatures. May have been related to Russia or Russians or something like that. I don't think you have many characters. And the last boss was a pushover, more or less, being just another human, who might have been super strong...not sure.

I never played the original Fallout so I have no idea, but that sounds kind of like what I would imagine it to be like.

Had a quick look, and no, whilst it looks slightly similar, it isn't Fallout 1. It is much more like Final Fantasy Tactics in that combat is tile based. Also, from what I recall, it wasn't futureesque post-apocalyptic, but seemingly more like present post-apocalyptic. It was also possibly all based in one city, and not a large one. Not even sure there was anything other than one tile based fight to the next.. :S

I still play sometimes with my Brother and Dad. I don't know any of the exploits you are talking about though :o but we also had a rule against burning down resources.

There was this really old mariokart-esque racing game on the PC, with animal racers and porcupine throwing. I don't really remember any details about it though (aside from the porcupine throwing). It came on floppy disks and ran on DOS.

I remember playing some game that was somewhat like futuristic ice hockey but with violence, a lot of blood, and very fast paced. It probably isn't that old, since it was in 3d with polygons already and I think you played in 3rd person, too.

Speedball maybe? When i was 12 years old i got the the broken c64(without sound) from my uncle. I had now idea how to really use it and i could only start a few games but Racing Destruction Set was by far my favourite of them.

Speedball on Game Boy was so fucking awesome. Was there ever a good remake/similar game to it that works on PC?

Looking for a PC game, I think from the early 90s. Pretty sure it ran on Windows 3.1.
It was a top-down space shooter in a grid of obstacles. I remember a black background with a grid of gray squares, and you could fly your little ship between them (as though you were flying down streets in a grid of buildings) and try to shoot down the other ships also flying around in the grid. Sort of like Pac-Man without the dots, and you were in a gunfight with the ghosts.
Edit: And I thought it was in one of those "Windows Arcade Pack" or whatever bundles, as I remember Chip's Challenge, Asteroids, some Star Trek game, something with cats/mice/cheese, Pipe Dream, Jezz-Ball, and a few other things being on the same computer, but no luck. I think it was packaged together with something very much like Missile Command, so maybe it was an Atari game ported to PC?

Oh wow we played that to shit haha. Both on one keyboard having a go with splitscreen. So awsome!
Looking for an old game, MS Dos I believe it was from. I was playing it at school alongside the likes of DX-Ball, Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen 4. It was a 2D side-scrolling platformer where you played some robot. I remember the first room you entered (to the right, obviously) had some UFO that came down from the ceiling and started shooting at you. Some other rooms had huge robots that basically meant instant death and there were a lot of hidden block and difficult jumping involved.
best mac games ever. We played that stuff lan before the imacs.
And ya, we kinda cursed the day when microsoft bought bungie because they were only producing games for macs, also, see the video what halo would/should have been... not a xbox release hurry production.
Can you guys help me remember an old game? I used to play it about 10+ years ago on a win95 machine. I don't remember much about it, just that you were a small triangular white ship which fired from its tip and had 2 thrusters on the bottom. It was a lot about maneuvering it through tight corridors and spinning around to shoot at the static defenses on the ground (small white pipes protuding from it). The physics was really tight, and you had to manage acceleration closely or smash into the ground/a wall.

how far are we going? Can I recommend something from 1999?
Silver, outcast, arx fatalis - Those are must plays, you can maybe skip arx fatalis, but I consired outcast and silver to be classics. The humor in outcast is one of its best features.
If anyone is interested in playing those, you're gonna have to find reworks and patches to get em running on newer machines. I can spoon feed you if you're having issues, because those are the best games ever made, I would pay to get people to play them
Outside of the classic Red Alert 1 I played the hell of this game: I loved building a hole that I filled with dynamites, aquariums, cats, mice and little guys and blow the whole thing up. Good times.

Yes Outcast was good but Giants: Citizen Kabuto was way funnier!
An American Football game made early 90's at the latest, likely a lot older. It had a top-down viewpoint and the players were represented by letters (R for running back, Q for quarter back, etc). I think it allowed keyboard or mouse control and you could either control the players as well as calling plays or just call the plays. Plays had names like 6-2 stackman, 3-4 bump and run, etc. It didn't have a season mode or anything I don't think - it was just 1 game.
An arcade football (soccer) game again made early 90's at the latest. I can't actually remember the gameplay itself, I can just remember some of the screens that rolled by when the game wasn't played. Some of the screens were a picture of each of the teams were the players looked a bit like this. Each team had identical looking players except the goalkeeper and each team had a speciality. One time specialised in goalkeeping and their whole team was made up of goalkeepers. I think it was possibly a tie-in for a European championships/world cup, but certainly the teams were national teams.

I remember seeing that game played at a family friend's house a few times. Unfortunately, I never knew the name of it. I remember something like the red ships were worth 10 points, and you were looking to get crosses for some kind of score or medal ranking system at the end.

This reminds me of Tempest but unfortunately I can't find any good images of the game. It was black and white like Asteroids, but had this ring that you were confined to and had to spin around it shooting and dodging stuff. Tempest 2000
I'm trying to remember an old PC game. It was kind of an open-world adventure/mystery game with hand-to-hand combat (and I think also other kinds of combat like guns/swords). The game started out with the main character in his apartment which included a sonic shower (no idea why I remember those kinds of details but not the important stuff). Eventually he gets attacked and you learn how to deal with hand-to-hand combat etc.
It's not much to go by. I tried googling but trust me, you don't want to google images of sonic shower (you get a whole lot of sonic the hedgehog showering, lol!)
Figured I'd bump this despite this game not being old. I played it ~2 years ago and I think it was pretty new then.
This game had a very indie feel to it (think it was "indie"). You are a lithe figure in a mostly sand filled desert like land, collecting flags I think among ruins. The more you get the more bounces you get which help you traverse the land. At one point there is this big fish thing, where if it sees you turns red and if it hits you, you lose some flags. It was pretty short, I never finished but towards the end I think I was encountering a snowy mountain.
Occasionally, you see a recollection of what time past may have held in the land, and it has a bit of a somber tone as you seem all alone. It was a simple, elegant game I guess if I had to describe it.
I remember playing a game where you started as a human guy, and then got different transformations. You could turn into a wolfy beast-man, some sort of amphibian, a rock creature, and more.. The game was played in first person and i seem to remember you could see your own face in place of a life bar. The game is from the days of dos and floppys..
I could never play it because i was too young, but i would watch my father play.. =(
Was on PC, like 1990 to 1995. Was somewhat a point and click with some RPG elements I think. Set in a medieval fantasy, you couldn't see your team and one of the member was a redhead archer girl (which dies at one point I think). Graphics were fixed background, colorful hand drawn.
Name had something that sounds like Shandalar or something similar in it.
Edit: God that was driving me mad not being able to remember. Game was Shannara:
The funny thing about that game was that I was trying to play it while barely knowing english. Probably wasn't a great game... but hey, childhood memories.
I played the demo of it when i was pretty young back when i bought Pc game magazines with demos on their CD. It was of course 2D, i think a bit cartoonish. It was isometric or top down. It was about building a village i think. It was about knights.
I remember only that it was a bit silly and that i was building some kind of chicken farm that was needed for something. Again, it was i think in some kind of cute 2D style with a bit of sillyness.
Its not settlers, knights and merchants, cultures.
i have never seen it again, so it wwas probably really terrible or a german only game.
This game was played when I was little(I'm 16) and had this blue and gray space ship that flew around. There were level ups of the shots(1 small quick shot going forward and leveled up gradually to get more leveled up) and the ship was moved around with the arrow keys and shot with space bar. There were 3 lives. It was full screen.

Microman! I remember that game! Wasn't ringing any bells until you said hidden block + difficult jumping.
God i'm so old that i know and can name all this game in the blink of an eye...
Remember those :
- SuperKart - Funtracks - POD
- Warzone 2100
- Another World - Little big adventure
- Red fucking baron ? :p - Oilcap ? (this game is kind of inside Bioshock when you hack things)
Or Android on .. TO7 ? Was it ? C64 ? oh ! C64 ! Wintergames ! the controller crusher :p
I can't find anything the can make crusader no remorse run even dosbox doesn't work.
I remember playing a game on MAC (maybe apple2 ?) that was controller based side scrolling... you could play with two players. Games was hard as shit. You had a lot of weapons that you could find.
Can't find the name of that game
Also the game kind of beetlejuice and gameplay "ala" dragon's lair. I remember there was a "13" in the title.
Not sure if I'm completely mad, because I'm getting to think that the game doesn't exist, but I've tried to find one NES game from time to time over the years and never got lucky. I'm pretty sure it was 2D sidescroller. The game reminds me of Kirby's Advetures if I think it, but it wasn't.
After somewhat 20 years from that game only thing I remember the character you controlled had this weird hair, like a paintbrush in he's head or something.
ps. Maybe the hair was more like Rayman has, maybe even multicolored. Damn.
Ring any bells? Or was this just a childhood's dream.

After somewhat 20 years from that game only thing I remember the character you controlled had this weird hair, like a paintbrush in he's head or something.
ps. Maybe the hair was more like Rayman has, maybe even multicolored. Damn.
Ring any bells? Or was this just a childhood's dream.
Lode Runner's hair was pretty weird looking with a Magic Wand(?) in his hair: + Show Spoiler +

It's not Lode Runner, definately with better graphics. Like I said it somehow reminds me of Kirby. Happy music like Kirby & SMB3 had, double rainbows everywhere. Maybe my memory is just fucking with me and shaped it like that. Kabuki is best suggestion so far, it seems I have to go with that.
Have gone through so many games I've begun to think if it even was NES game, though I didn't have any other console in my house.

Asked my friend about the game and he remembers it too. He said there was other characters you could play with, some rock/stoneman and perhaps some lizzard guy. Damn this is bothering me.
edit: This game description begun to sound too much like Megaman, but it isn't.

Some other rooms had huge robots that basically meant instant death and there were a lot of hidden block and difficult jumping involved.

There was an game for PC where you were a guy in [Pink]??? Uniform running around shooting others. I remember that Rain was hurting you depleting ur hp [an health bar to be more precise] You could board mechs like in megaman X. The game had a Butterfly logo if I recall correctly. damn it was so long ago i cant remember.
Also another one.
An old-school arcade shooter. For destrying enemy ships u could earn Coins in order to upgrade ur weapons, shield etc. Also for few levels u had to engage with a Boss (big ship with many many weapons) I would really try this one out one more time. Ahh it was on pc also.

Uh none of these :c . I've played tyrian on my DS. Shooter was more like upgraded version of galaga, Ur ship didnt chage the look only bullets did. The background was 100% space themed (no earth, cliffs, water).

Playstation 1 game. Was side scrolling fighting game. You could play a bunch of guys and you would just fight thugs coming while moving forward on the level. You could pick up like everything, iron bars, small cans etc to use as weapons.

You're basically describing the entire Beat 'em Up genre .
I don't think there were many 2D Beat 'em Ups on the PS1, so it might be easy just to scroll through the entire genre listing for the console.
I'm trying to remember 2 old playstation one games.
the first involved keeping a moving stick from hitting either wall (similar to those things where you move the hoop round the wire but inverted)
the second involved two teams of fighter jets fighting in a big tournament
any ideas?

Guys i'm looking to buy (or maybe download if can't buy) an OLD game. Remember Return fire ? I know there is a Return fire 2 but i never got my hands on it. Do you know where i can find it ? Free or paying i don't care. Just bought Earth 2140,2150,2160 on steam :p
Only a cracked version that didn't work back in the 90's. Return fighter is an AWESOME game (split screen ftw).
@unkkz Was there a level in a kitchen where you can even pick up pasteries and throw them at your oppponents ? If so i think it's... "fighting force ?" Something like that. A game that existed on Dreamcast too ? You could pick up EVERYTHING in this game to fight (like you could get a plate of steaks and throw individual steaks then the plate). This game was awesome.

Oh man Rfire :D Such a fun multiplayer game. My version works fine on my Windows 7 64bit, although I did aquire my copy in a probably less than legit way, if you know what I mean
To get it to work I ran the exe in compatibility mode for Windows 95 (not XP) and let it run in 256 colours.
Hi, I cannot remember the name of the game I played during the 90s.
You play a young squire/knight in a fantasy setting. The intro as real life actors of people of court making fun at you and sending you off to some remote location. The gameplay was in a top down view. The gameplay was split in to parts. During the day you build up a town to aquire more resources for your next day. During the night red goblin-like creatures attacked and destroyed your work. You fought them with a two handed sword. You had a strong spin attack that would make you dizzy. You could buy bombs and stuff during the day to help in the fighting.
I think the name of the game was like your goblin-like attackers where called. I'm not even sure the game was any good, but I know I had lots of fun.
-> Yes! typing this helped. I just remembered the name. + Show Spoiler +
The game is "The Horde" (not so top down after all)

I was meaning return fire 2 (yes it exists) it's in 3D as far as i remember. I have a legit version of return fire that i got on a magazine. But i just can't find return fire 2.
I've wanted to find a helicopter simulation game. The game itself is from maybe 2000? I just remember I got it on a CD like 10-15 years ago. The controls were so cumbersome that we had to play with two people, with one controlling the weaponry, but eventually I discovered how to play by myself. I think it had like five levels, eventually involving getting into some sort of volcano or cavern. The game was in 3D. I've searched for helicopter simulation games on wikipedia, but none of them seem to be the one that I was looking for.
Hey, i just remember a played another game that i want to find again. It's a Hack'n slash. Maybe from after diablo 2 ? (think so). There is no multiplayer and there was 3 playable character, you had weapons like guns. You strated in a town that was overun by monster (i think).
When you would town portal you ended up in somewhat of a lab where you would have potions and weapons etc... it's older than titan quest but i think newer than D2.

For me it seems like you're describing torchlight 1 (3 main characters <mage>, <huntress>, <warrior>) it starts in the town that is leading to a mining cave style of dungeon. Guns are for the female huntress but also she can use bow's and daggers. There is no multiplayer. its a hack 'n slash but the part where you use townportal isnt the same. using scroll will tp you to the town where you start. Also it isnt veryy old game.
Oh man, there's this one old platformer where you play as a renaissance puss in boots that have a gun and shoots dogs whom are also fully dressed. I have photo evidence back home that it wasn't just a dream but i've never been able to find the game.
Also sick nostalgia for TopGun!
That and the first dungeonkeeper game have been melded together in my head since childhood. Oh, and who else remember starcraft units that never existed. On the first mission where you get goliaths i could've sworn i saw some really funky zergs which i've never come across again. :D

Not torchlight. It's much older and not really well known. It's basicly like torchlight but not cartoony and it's not as speedy.

Nox, perhaps?
No it's more a 2000ish game. Maybe later. Same period as TitanQuest. It's not well know. It's not something "mainstream" like Nox, Titan Quest, Torchlight etc... it's steampunkish

OK, so this one's going to be a bit of the wall, but there was an arcade game, one of the light gun House of the Dead types that had aliens that abducted people and turned them into aliens if you didn't shoot the UFOs fast enough. I remember random shit like grannies turning into green monsters via abduction and the way they said "Damage" every time you get hit. Used to be one at a place called Celebration Station (renamed Zuma because God knows why) near my house.
Anyone remember? Was probably early 2000s. Remember playing it around the same time as Gauntlet Legends.
I've had this game in my head a while but never could find out what the name was. It might be old enough to be a commodore 64 game, I'm not sure.
In it, the game was to draw lines with the arrow keys. Once the lines closed to form any polygon shape, the shape would fill up with red or green. There were small moving lines (like a / but a little longer) bouncing around the screen that you had to capture this way. They would bounce off any shapes you already made, but if they hit your line while you were still drawing it, it was game over. The levels got harder by having more and faster lines zipping around the screen as well as a timer. You always started in the center bottom of the screen so one tactic in the early levels was to go straight up. Once you hit the top, one half of the screen would instantly be filled, killing any enemy lines trapped. (but you were very vulnerable doing this). I played it a ton but I cannot remember the name of that game. Anyone have an idea?

okay PLEASE HELP ME my game i played i was somewhere between kindergarten and 2nd grade i’m 17 now so it was early 2000s. it was kind of like a web browser like cool math games but it was way different i remember one of the games was a magician and he would have three hats and a ball or something under one and u had to pick the right one. that was just one of the games on the site that i remember. there were different colored boxes like text boxes you could click on to go to different games and things.
