I am not really someone to post topics. But since I got some nice games to play from here, I decided to post one. I played this one non stop the last few days.

What is this game about?

Tales of Maj’Eyal (ToME) is a free roguelike RPG.

+ Show Spoiler +
The continent of Maj’Eyal lives in a relative peace. After millennia of war the orcs are extinct, the advanced races have allied together, and the evils of magic have been repressed. But there are still untamed forests, cursed lands, marauding bandits, sealed dungeons of undead, and whispers spread of hidden cults of mages. Some even say the orcs are not all dead, and muster their strength in dark places.

You are an adventurer, seeking your fortune in the open world, investigating ruins and mysteries in search of riches and powers. Explore a continent still scarred by the terrible Spellblaze from ages past, teeming with wild beasts, monsters, trolls and giants. Delve through dark dungeons infested by armies of undead, demonic monstrosities and hideous horrors. Uncover world changing secrets, from relics of the ancient and all-powerful Sher’Tul race to veiled cities of magic and concealed psionic beings. Fight with skill and care against undying necromancers, towering dragons, primeval forces, arcane demons and world-threatening powers.

I always wanted to try a roguelike but the tilesets and gameplay always turned me off of them. ToME is easily accessible for a roguelike. The tileset is great and reminds me of Battle for Wesnoth. It also has a great talent system that makes every class unique to play. There's limited grinding, speed up features for the lazy like me and after customizing my keys it has faster gameplay than most fps and the best of it: I actually like the cliche story. There is a unique story to every zone. Most of the world building comes from random tomes you come across while adventuring.

You can download it http://te4.org/download.

So what can you expect from it?

First of all:

You can choose between 9 different races/subraces (dont click the spoiler, if you don't want to know the secret unlockable races):

Human: Higher/Cornac
Elf: Shalore/Thalore
Halfling
Dwarf
+ Show Spoiler +
Yeek (have to be unlocked)
Undead: Ghoul/Skeleton (have to be unlocked)

There are 20+ different classes and most of them are pretty unique to play. Most of these classes have to be unlocked so don't click the spoiler if you want to be surprised about the classes.

+ Show Spoiler +
Bulwark - Melee tank.
Berserker - A purely offensive warrior that lacks defense.
Archer - A warrior who uses ranged weapons, like slings and bows.
Arcane Blade - A hybrid fighter/mage that can trigger spells with melee attacks.
Brawler - A fighter specializing in unarmed combat.
Rogue - A nimble melee fighter relying on daggers, traps and stealth to defeat its enemies, while dodging or avoiding enemy attacks.
Shadowblade - Magical rogue.
Marauder - Brawny rogue.
Alchemist - A mage that manipulates gems and has a golem for a companion.
Archmage - Standard mage.
Necromancer - A mage who specializes in the magic of death. They can raise the bodies and souls of the dead into undead minions, enthralled slaves which fight until destroyed. They can also deal damage directly, using darkness- and cold-based spells.
Cursed - A warrior who uses the power of hate to fuel his powers.
Doomed - A mage that made a deal with devil and paid the consequences. Uses hate and psychic powers as a substitute for magic.
Reaver - A warrior with corrupted blood. Can duel-wield one-handed weapons and spread disease.
Corruptor - Blood mage.
Anorithil - A mage of the Sun and Moons. Uses light and darkness spells.
Sun Paladin - A grossly incandescent warrior of sunlight.
Summoner - A nature-lover who summons wild animals to attack his enemies.
Wyrmic - A warrior who possesses the powers of dragons.
Stone Warden - Donation class. A warrior who uses nature and arcane abilities in harmony. I don't have access to it.
Paradox Mage - Time lord. Uses crazy time-related powers.
Temporal Warden - Hybrid melee/ranged/magic warrior.
Mindslayer A warrior who uses psychic powers.
Solipsist - Reality warper.

Different difficulties and permadeath levels [roguelike with 1 life, adventure with up to 7 lifes, exploration mode with no deaths(booh)] make it accessible to everyone. So give it a try!

Oh thanks for posting this one. I've been playing it a while, with a couple winners on normal/adventurer and loads of alts, and thought it deserved a thread here as well. I really like the way unlockables are implemented, as well as the difficulty curves. I also like the game author's way of rewarding donators: cosmetic features in chat, shared "vault" space, and a few custom tiles for your characters. Never felt like I had to pay to play the "real" game.

A tip for anyone starting out, try to hit the various starter dungeons before going after the "Tier 2" stuff. A lot of places scale to your level upon first entry, but the starter dungeons (Norgos Lair, Trollmire, Kor'Pul, Scintillating Caves, Heart of the Gloom, Rhaloren Camp and a few other race/class specific ones) cap out early, so it puts you in a better spot later on if you can grab some extra xp and loot before The Maze, Old Forest, Sandworm Lair and Daikara. The bonus boss in Trollmire can also punish recklesness: unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't fight Bill straight away! Be careful with vaults as well. Scouting, keeping an escape route open, and coming back later are really helpful.

Is there another thread for this or something? Surprised it's so dead. I think it was voted roguelike of the year for 2013.

I just started playing this game couple weeks ago and it's a lot of fun. You get the best of both worlds: the complexity, intricacy and difficulty of roguelikes, with the graphics (though crude), UI and lore of a CRPG. Hope to see more people post... help us noobs out with your experience.

Can get your feet wet by watching the beginner's Let's Play:

http://te4.org/tome/videos

The guy gets pretty far into the game. I just copied what he did for my first game and my character's almost level 40... hoping I can win but only one life left. Failed miserably trying different classes.

Doing the hardest difficulty doesn't count for earlier difficulties. So each and every achievement is unique. No farming them on hardest difficulty and getting them on all easier settings. :/ Most of the achievements are difficulty 1-20 copies of each other, still leaves a ton of unique ones in there.
