Cthuhu Wars is a new strategy board game by Sandy Petersen. Picture of pieces from base game: + Show Spoiler +
Sandy created the Call of Cthulhu RPG, and worked on many other role-playing projects, such as Runequest and Elfquest.
In the computer game world, he has worked for Microprose, id Software, and Ensemble Studios, where he was involved with Civilization, Doom, Quake, the Age of Empire series, and Halo Wars, among others.
The game is based on controlling one of the old ones and trying to rule the world with your horde of monsters, with each faction having different strategies. Looks fun and the miniatures are really nice.
Some more faction videos have been added. Really like the huge variety of factions. Game is expensive, but the models are huge and as well detailed as any miniature game.
Last 2 hours of the kickstarter now. You get 9 unique free neutral Great Old Ones (the biggest models) if you pledge $200 or more, which will retail for ~$20 each as part of the stretch goals, along with some collector versions of some of the smaller models.
Game is finally shipping to Kickstarters now and should be delivered in the next 4-6 weeks depending on if it gets stuck in customs and Christmas time shipping delays. Pre-orders for retail copies available here. Excited to get my copy and play. Figures included in base game: + Show Spoiler +
The game itself is a lot of fun. Sandy Petersen's work on Age of Empires shows as the game play reminds me of an RTS in many of it's mechanics. The spell books and different units reminds me of an RTS tech tree, the economy building, the asymmetric design of each faction, the fact that you can unlock your spell books in any order and the multiple and different ways you go about that with each faction. The game will be hitting retail in April.
Oh my god those miniatures are so beautiful! As someone who has tried to paint minis to various degrees of dissatisfaction I am super impressed! Might I ask what paints you're using? Also, your sealer seems pretty glossy except for Nartholep adn the King in Yellow; did you use two different sealants or is it just a play of the light? I love love the glossy feel on the slimy oozy characters.
Thanks, I used Testors Dullcote on the ones that are not shiny and gloss varnish on the ones that are supposed to look slimy/wet. For Shub Niggurath I used Tamiya Red Clear over a primarily red paint job.
The models were base coated with Vallejo Air paints and an airbrush using zenithal highlighting, then brush work to finish up. I have paints from a bunch of different manufacturers, but primarily used P3, Vallejo and Reaper, with Army Painter quickshade ink for washes.
Cthulhu Wars is expensive compared to an average board game, but compared to something like Warhammer, the number of large miniatures with nice detail is very high and you get four complete factions in a game that plays in about 90 minutes.
They are running a second kickstarter as all their initial expansions sold out in preorder. You can get all of the original content that wasn't exclusive to the first kickstarter, plus some new stuff has been added.
It's expensive, but it is a great game and the miniatures are impressive.
